Concerned about battery usage
I never used the battery before. Now it's my first time using the battery; it only allow me a 1/2 hour to work. How do I solve the problem?
You might also go through the Battery Information Center to understand some basics about notebook batteries.

Hello,
I'm a little concerned about the battery in my MacBook Air 11-inch. This is the second battery I've had in the computer since I bought it. The first one only last about an hour with a full charge. My AASP replaced it. I'm really only getting about 4 hours out of the new one, screen brightness is dimmed, Bluetooth is off, Airport is on (5Ghz), mainly monitoring a live remote video feed (Flash), and basic email and web browsing. Nothing too taxing, at least I don't think so. Here's what coconutBattery tells me…
My concern lies with the design capacity percentage. Should a new battery only have a capacity of 97% after only a month? (This is the second battery.)Battery capacity declines as soon as the battery is used. What you see is quite normal. Given that Flash uses a lot of CPU resources and your wireless is on, four to five hours is also normal.

Ask Ars- What is the best way to use a Li-ion battery? -
I have iPod Nano 5th 8GB, my question is simple. on http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html said that this iPod able to play 24hours playback if fully charged. My question is, does this true? and what should I do to make this iPod correctly run in 24hours in audio playback? Any configuration please..
And the last question is, how to check that my *iPod Battery* running well? Here are the notes Apple posted on the page you refer to about Battery Testing and length of playback :-
Testing conducted by Apple in August 2009 using preproduction hardware and software. The playlist contained 358 unique audio tracks consisting of content imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC) and content purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC). Video content was purchased from the iTunes Store. Battery tests are conducted with specific iPod units; actual results may vary. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced (see www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery). Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information. -
Concerned about bandwidth usage with this program.
I live in a remote area which has few internet options. My internet plan is not unlimited. I pay high rates for anything I use over a specified amount. I can't allow any programs to regularly upload or download data unregulated by me. Is this situation going to make Adobe CC less useful to me? What will it effect?
CC will not do anything you don't want. Aside from the regular check of the activation status, no data wil lbe sent or downloaded and al lsuch options for updates, synching, TypeKit etc. can simply be turned off.

Concerned about falling battery capacity on rMBP
Hello all, I'm starting to worry a bit about my battery capacity vs design capacity on my retina macbook pro 15". It's a early 2013 model that I bought in July. I know that apple guarantees the battery will have at least 80% of it's design capacity after 1000 cycles, but I'm worried mine is going to fall far short of that. Here's my coconut battery info:
As you can see, I've only had 60 cycles on the battery, the computer is barely half a year old, and it's already down 6%, under 8000 mAh. Should I be concerned/take it to the apple store? I know they won't replace my computer since I'm far outside of my 14 days, but still wondering if they'll do something. Will they even do anything before the battery falls below 80% design capacity?
I waited to post because I know battery capacity often fluctuates from 5% below to 5% above design frequently and will go up and down with use, but mine has steadily decreased, and has never increased. Every time I check coconut battery, it's 10-50 mAh lower than it was. My macbook does stay plugged in a lot, but I also make a point of using the battery at least once a week to keep the electrons flowing, and most weeks it gets off the charger more like two or three times. Often the battery will get used down to at least 50 or 60 percent before it gets plugged back in, sometimes even as low at 15 or 20 percent. I've tried draining it until it goes to sleep and then letting it charge to full again, but it didn't change anything. I didn't think it would, since lithium based batteries don't suffer memory issues, but I thought maybe it was just an error in measurement by the system.
Speaking of that, I did reset the NVRAM/PRAM and the SMC (multiple times). Only one of the times I reset the SMC did the light turn orange and then charge more, but it didn't change the max capacity number at all.
I see a lot of people posting their cocunut results/system information screen and finding they actually have above design capacity. Did I just get a lemon battery, or is it because I have it plugged in so much?
Thoughts? Thanks!Apple guarantees that if your battery is well taken care of and not abused, however your battery looks fine.
You state: ~ As you can see, I've only had 60 cycles on the battery
Cycle counts dont account for much. People (some) leave their macbooks always hooked on power and worse still in sleep mode and on power and this can ruin a battery in "50 cycles", ergo it means little.
As for the 5% power fluctuation this means absolutely nothing since charge is just an estimate and the 5% is within that range.
Information:
Bad discharging or battery use conditions:
Heat (due to environmental conditions or due to rapid discharges from heavy use = gaming / video editing)
Rapid discharging of the battery frequently causes chemical changes over time in the battery leading to decrease capacity and resistance of current flow.
The very worst use of your battery is often draining the battery very low, and worse still letting it remain in such a state.
*Most long-term rapid damage to the battery occurs from discharging it with high loading (gaming) conditions but paramount is avoiding deep and frequent low DOD (depths of discharge) in use.
Undesirable charging or charged conditions:
High perpetual SOC (state of charge), where the battery is always or very often connected to charge
Parasitic loading where the battery is both usually on and charging or worse both always charging and in sleep mode, since this induces mini-cycling of the battery.
Bad general handling conditions:
Temperature use conditions when either too hot (95F and above) or too cold (50F and below)
Storing your battery away with a low charge (40% and less) long-term.
Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 25 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little to no importance. Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not to an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count. *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific. As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
*However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above: “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”. This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
The good news is that your Macbook has a safety circuit in place to insure the battery doesn’t reach too low before your Macbook will auto power-off. Bad news: if you let your Macbook protection circuitry shut down your notebook at its bottom, and you refrain from charging it for a couple days...the battery will SELF-DRAIN to zero (depending on climate and humidity)…and nothing is worse on a Lithium battery being low-discharged than self-draining down to and sitting at 0
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.

Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion. -
Equium M50-164: Question about Fan usage & battery timer
Hi !!
Just got hold of my equium m50-164 laptop today and I wanted to clarify a few issues
firstly,
I flashed my bios with the latest version and upon the reboot the fan kicked in at full power and didn't turn off until i put the laptop into standby mode, this seemed to of rectified the problem but the fan seems to be kicking in a lot more than compared to before, luckily the fan isn't kicking into 100% speed but more like 15% - 20% every 30 secs or a minute then goes into silent mode, the fan hasn't hit 100% unless i do a reboot :),
I know the fan will speed faster based on the cpu usage etc (thermal) but is this normal? I spoke to support and they wanted me to have an instant replacement but I said I would wait a few days to see if it would calm down :)
and finally looking at the power meter and other software tools there seems to be no battery calibration, with previous laptops i noticed that numerical calculations are made based on battery usage and time left [i.e a timer] but with this laptop i kind find a timer - i would of thought tha every laptop has this facility nowadays !
any advice would be helpful
cheers
Ephid0r UKHi
Please dont be mad on me but I really dont understood why your first step is BIOS update. The unit is delivered with actual BIOS and it is really not necessary to make it before you notice some problems. I just hope that you have enough experience with it because I have read a few postings on this forum about BIOS damage while BIOS update and to make it good again costs a lot of money.
Your BIOS is updated and there are new values that should be used by Power saver utility (responsible for cooling fan monitoring). I recommend you to remove preinstalled power saver, restart the unit and install it again. I hope that the result will be better.
Battery calibration I dont know what you want exactly but the battery usage can be control by power saver tool. On the task bar there is symbol for power saver and if you move the mouse pointer on it the battery capacity and left time will be shown. -
I will be traveling to Rome and Paris and I'm concerned about frying my iPad when charging. Will I need a converter/adapter when charging or will I just use an adapter?
what RBRY says. Look at the fine print on your power brick. It says 100v-240v. This means it can handle world wattage.....both the us 110 and the UK/and other places 220. Anything that displays that range works anywhere in the world with the right plug adapter.
You can get plug adapters at walgreens, walmart, target, kmart, best buy, office max, office depot.....almost any major retailer. Look in the travel/luggage area.
Do some googling and find out what Italian plugs look like or you can simply find a kit that is a 'world wide' kit. -
When i go to settings>battery usage> it shows that my home lock screen is using 84% of my battery. I have a photo that was taken with my phone as my background image on both. Do I need to change them out to a solid color to get better battery life?
Hello fishes2000,
From your post I see you're concerned about the battery usage on your iPad. To learn what the Home & Lock Screen battery usage entails, please see the information outlined below. After that is a link that can help you optimize the settings on your iPad to maximize the battery performance.
Home & Lock Screen. This indicates that the Home screen or Lock screen was displayed on your device. For example, the display was awakened by pressing the Home button or by a notification.
If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap App and set Allow Notifications to Off.

Should I be concerned? Battery Life
Just got my new iPhone 4 two weeks ago. I love it so far but am wondering if I should be concerned about a battery issue. Right after unplug it drops to 99%, that's not a big deal. But after like two hours of usage and standby it drops to the 75% range. I can get upwards of 36 hours on standby and about 5 hours of usage before I drop to the 30% range. I'm not sure if this is normal and it fits my needs, but I just was curious if this was in normal range.
HI,
But after like two hours of usage and standby it drops to the 75% range.
Those are normal ranges and it really depends on the type of use, whether you are surfing the net or e-mail or watching videos.
Good read here optimizing the iPhone battery. Apple - Batteries - iPhone
I can get upwards of 36 hours on standby and about 5 hours of usage before I drop to the 30% range.
That's very good.

IPhone 6 Battery Usage setting not working.
When I go to my setting and check my Battery Usage setting it states: "Battery information will be available after using iPhone for a few minutes". I've been using it for hours and I get the same response when I go to the setting. I've turned off my phone multiple times to see if that would resolve it, but it hasn't. Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?
Hello.
I have the same problem. iPhone 5, iOS8.0.2, used for a few days - still no usage statistics, only "Battery information will be available after using iPhone for a few minutes".
I tried restore iPhone (DFU) without restoring backup from iCloud/iTunes, resets, hard-resets, erase all settings, drain battery to 0% and charge to 100% overnight etc. - nothing helps.
I wrote to the Apple about this problem.
Here is the page that you can use to contact with Apple and report a bug - https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Please, give the title of "iOS8 battery usage statistics not working" (or something like that), choose the "Bug report" and describe the problem. Perhaps it will make that Apple will eliminate this problem in the next version of iOS. More report - greater chance.

IPhone 6 Battery Usage function not working
Battery Usage feature continues to read; "Battery information will be available after using iPhone for a few minutes" even though I have now had the phone and used it for one week. Using iPhone 6, 64G, IOS 8.0.0.(no iOS updates have yet been applied)
A few days ago I attempted some suggestions posted by others. One of those was to let the battery drain to zero then fully charge. This had no affect on the Battery Usage feature. Another suggestion that i tried was to close all open apps on phone, then shut down phone and then turn back on. This did not resolve the Battery Usage issue either.
Is apple aware of this issue? Any help would be appreciated.Hello.

Alert About battery dumped using showfaults is not present in syslog
Hello,
My problem is the following: when I am connected on sc and with showfaults command I can see the warning concerning the battery threshold, but this warning do not appear in syslog under /var/log/. And also when using prtdiag -v command nothing is dumped about voltage, fan or temperature.
In fact I use a service to grep syslog and create an alarm file which is the first entry point to detect any problem on system.
I need to know how to configure such warning to be dumped in syslog?

Hello,
My problem is the following: when I am connected on sc and with showfaults command I can see the warning concerning the battery threshold, but this warning do not appear in syslog under /var/log/.
In fact I use a service to grep syslog and create an alarm file which is the first entry point to detect any problem on system.
I need to know how to configure such warning to be dumped in syslog?
My server is a "Sun Microsystems sun4v Sun Fire T2000"
I don't think such messages ever go to syslog. If they are anywhere, they'll be reported to your /var/adm/messages file(s). You might be able to configure the system to add them to syslog but others will need to give guidance on doing that.
... when using prtdiag -v command nothing is dumped about voltage, fan or temperature. When prtdiag is run as only a user of the system, it commonly yields a simplified and/or truncated output. Run it with the same verbose `-v` command switch as root user and observe whether there are any differences.
"BATTERY at SC/BAT/V_BAT has exceeded low warning thresholdIn the meantime, just go ahead and schedule a maintenance window where you can shut the system down and replace the CR2032 coin cell battery that is on the System Controller ( SC/BAT ) . "Exceeded low voltage" means the battery is at or near zero volts and needs to be replaced.

WP8.1 35% battery usage in an hour
After installing WP 8.1, I'm facing a strange issue, I charged my phone to 100% about an hour ago, but now it shows 65% remaining.
The weird thing is, the new battery saver usage statistics shows really high battery usage for apps that i've never used after installing WP 8.1 update. And they are all background usages according to the battery saver.
Is anyone else facing a similar issue? In battery saver usage statistics, Internet Explorer is on top and about 70% of it's battery usage is in background.
2nd one is the default Camera app, 100% in background
3rd app on the list is Angry Birds GO, 100% in background
4th one is google mail account,
5th is a TV app, i dont even remember when i've installed it
6th is OneDrive, 100% background usage but background usage of the app has been disabled.
7th is Speedtest.net app, I've used it a couple of weeks ago, that's all
I've used a few apps after installing WP 8.1 preview and IE is one of them, the other apps that I've used was at the bottom of the list, that's really weird. -
Does SMS relay iOS 8.1 cause extra iPhone battery usage?
I was messing with both SMS relay the other day and noticed that my battery drained almost twice as fast..
I was also messing with handoff and basically just testing the new integration features between Yosemite and iOS8.1
But my question is about SMS relay.. Does anyone know if this will us up more iPhone battery than if I wasn't using SMS relay and just SMSing from the iPhone itself?
Does SMS relay work via bluetooth? Could this be a cause for extra battery usage? It could be possible that I was jus using my phone a bit extra that day but I just want to make sure as I have SMS relay turned off for now, don't want battery life dropping..
-FrankI had the same problem. I realized that it had everything to do with my calendar app. My iCalendar was having a difficult time fetching information from my Outlook and Yahoo Calendar. Causing my battery percentage to decline at a very rapid rate. (50% in a 4 hour time frame). I resolved the problem by going into my Settings >" Messaging , Contact , Calendar" Setting > Clicking on one of my selected Accounts ( Outlook or Yahoo) and turning off the Calendar Sync. The problem seemed to go away after doing this. Now I'm only using 4% battery life in a 4 hour time frame in StandBy Mode. Well I Can only hope that this will help resolve the battery drainage issue. Good Luck ....
