Concerns with File Sharing using SMB

I'm trying to get the windows on my home network to be able to view certain shared folders on my iMac
When I enable SMB file sharing the windows PC gets to see most of my iMac and not just the shared folders with the appropriate read/write controls
What am I doing wrong?
thanks, Paul

I see the exact same thing - did you solve this? any info from anyone?

  • Concern with "File Sharing: On" -- my root user folder (and subfolders) and Macintosh HD is visible

    Hi all,
When I set up a File Sharing folder in OSX called "Share", I connected from my PC to my Macbook Pro and not only did I see the "Share" folder but I also could see and have total access to my root user folder (all its subfolders too) and my Macintosh HD (hard disk).  Did I miss something?  All I did was check mark "File Sharing" in the Sharing option of System Preferences.  Then I specifically shared only the "Share" folder that I created on the OSX desktop.
How do I turn of sharing for the root user folder and my Macintosh HD folder?
    Many thanks in advance!

Yes, I was logging in from my PC laptop to Mac as the Admin.  However, since there is a User called "Everyone" and I, for testing purposes only, turned Read/Write on for "Everyone", I figured I did not have to set up another user (such as "Guest").  I was wrong.  Once I created a new user called "Guest" and specifically checked the Guest account in the SMB option, it worked in the restricted mode I was hoping for.  Thanks!

  • Problem with file permissions using Snow Lepord

I'm having problems with file Sharing & Permissions using Snow Lepord.
When I save any new file it only has 'Read & Write' privileges for the user, everyone else is 'read only' or 'no access'.
We have a Netgear NAS Server which is accessed by other users over the local network and if I change the Privilege to 'read & write' via Get Info and then copy the file from my desktop to ther server it changes the Privilege of the server version to 'no access' we then have to change it again for it to work.
I also created a new folder on the server and now it says 'no access' and has a no entry icon!
    Any ideas???

We have issues like this. Have tried running AFP and SMB, now connecting using CIFS. All have the same problem. I can work on one or two files fine, then suddenly, one of the files I just worked on says I don't have permissions. I log off the server and log back on, and then I have permissions to the file. It will work fine for one or two operations, then fails. We just updated to OSX Mavericks and a Windows 2012 server, but have been having this issue for years. My permissions look fine. I can even change permissions, but it won't let me work on the file or move or delete the file or rename the file. Once I log out and log back in, I can do anything I want.

  • Problem with File Sharing-Permissions throughout Folders

I'm having an odd problem when setting up a Mac Pro with File Sharing. I have a second Hard Drive in it which is a Server Drive to be shared as a networked Hard Drive for both my MBP and my Fiancee's MBP. Here is the problem I have.
I set up File Sharing and set up both her ID and my ID. Since this is done she is able to get to drive from my MBP and she is able to get to the drive from her MBP. I am able to read or write to those folders. She is able to view them but is unable to write to them.
I went to the Server Drive icon on the Mac Pro's Desktop. When I right click and do "Get Info" and select Sharing I can tell her ID is not listed on any of the Folders. She is listed as Read and Write for the entire Hard Drive (which is an internal drive). I am also listed as Read and WRite and then it lists Everyone and says No Access. The same is listed in System Preferences in File Sharing. I have heard this Everyone 'No Access' can cause problems but I prefer not to give access to everyone. The only other option is Read Only and Read and Write. Also, when I have Everyone selected the - sign is greyed out so I'm unable to remove Everyone.
To continue, what is strange is I thought with it saying on the Server Drive itself for my Fiancee, read & write, that it would say this on every Folder inside. Yet when I select any Folder inside on the Server Drive and select Get Info it says for me "Read & Write" and for Staff "Read Only" and for Everyone "Read only" I'm not even sure where Staff comes fro and of course Everyone is Read Only and my Fiancee not even listed. It just seems that these file sharing permissions are not replicated througout all the Folders when I select it for the Hard Drive itself. What could be causing this and how can I get the same to go throughout the Folders? I know manually I could change them all but this would take a long time and likely still be a problem when any additional Folders are added.

    1. I have turned logged into it from my MBP while at Home and if I'm logged in as Guest I only see the Server Drive which is good. My concern is that if I log in with my login I then sell all Folders including the Main 'Macintosh HD' At least as a guest I can only see the Server Drive but is it any way I can stop it from showing all the other folders on the computer since I have no reason to do that?
When you login to a mac as an administrator it is normal to see all the contents of the volumes connected to that mac.
    2. Also, I would like to disable all access for Guest. Yet I have it list Everyone or Guest in the file sharing and I have no way of deleting this. I don't want a Guest to be able to connect to this computer or share any files at all on it. Is there any way to disable this?
    Goto system preferernces-->accounts
click on the lock to and enter your password to unlock the preference pane.
Then select the guest account. Then uncheck the 2 check boxes. The account should now have 'disabled' underneath it.
    3. Security: How secure is this? I am using it on a Home Wi-Fi network with an Airport Base Station 1GB. I have the Leopard filewall set to "Set Access for Specific Services" since it won't work with "Allow only essential services" I hope my home network is more security but with Back to my Mac how hard would it be for someone to be able to find this computer on the network? I don't do any filesharing on my MBP but do have it set up for File Sharing but only with my login ID.
If you have your base station set to distribute ip addresses then it is acting as a NAT router and will firewall you.
I have not setup back to my mac yet so can't comment on its security. Although I would suggest a strong password.
have a read of Mac OS X 10.5: About Back to My Mac security
My method of remote access is to use SSH and run screen sharing over an SSH tunnel.

  • File sharing using APLs How-to?

    Hi there,
We are a small business company switched to mac pro-s and got a problem with file sharing on local network.
When someone creates a file anywhere on the network, example: save a *.dwg /*.doc /*.pdf or simply create a new folder it has only permissions like:
read access for staff and for everyone
read and write for the specific user who created so "owns" the file
The problem is we always receive files via email onto the mac mini and want to send files from all over the network ect. We work in teamwork mode in some apps so we do really need read and write permissions all over the network BUT NOT ON THE Macintosh HD-s. In every mac Pro there is a RAID drive called DATA. I need your help how to get all the old and newly created files read and write permissions on all the data disks. We have 8 users globally.
I've read about ignoring permissions on a whole drive-I really don't want to do so.
I've also found Setting up the thing with ACLs But I'm not yet an expert in terminal. Could you give me a step by step "guide" how to set up my user group and the permissions for my data drives.
    Thanks,
    Gabor

    Hi GaborP
In my experience, permissions are something you either
    • delve into, by reading the man pages of chown, chmod, sticky, chflags and acl as well as articles and books OR
    • have someone who already knows his stuff set it up for you according to your needs.
In other words: In my experience, step-by-step guides won't reflect your needs.
What you want is to make use of the principle of "inheritance". Also, try to work out a folder structure that fits the working process of your team. Partitioning the minis HD into a boot and a data volume might be a first step.
To facilitate administration without the Terminal, have a look at the Server Admin Tools: Workgroup Manager is used on Mac OS X Server to administrate users, groups and sharing, but it can also be pointed at "normal" clients to give you a GUI access to folder permissions.
    Kind regards

  • Problems with File Sharing.... prev query unanswered

    Hello everyone,
I posted this query last month and have yet to solve the problem. I was hoping for some fresh ideas.
I am running a network on an OS X Server between three labs (around 50 computers connected). One lab has 3 IBMs running with Windows XP that are connected directly to a switch (via cable) and 1 IMac that runs from an airport device (Base).
The second lab has 3 computers running from the switch, and 3 Macs running from an additional airport baystation (located in that lab).
The problem I am having deals with file sharing. We have several folders which all users have access to ("public" folders) as well as "user" folders which allow access to the individual users, faculty members, and the admin account.
All permissions under "server preferences" seem to be defined appropriately.
Eg) selected "only those registered users" with specified user access indicated.
Initially after setup, all folder access within the two primary labs appears correct on all computers. However, within a few days, all Macs that run from the Baystation in the second lab no longer show correct folder access.
No problems occur with the IMac in the first lab.
Typically only one student folder will appear, and it will not be the correct one. No public folders show up (or rarely do). I had thought it may be a problem with users logging out, so I changed settings to induce an automatic logout after 30min of inactivity. This worked at first, but the problem again started after a few days.
I have tried many things and this problem still seems to occur within a few days of having fixed it. I am wondering if it may be an issue with the Baystation, though I am not sure how to address this. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!
    Thanks.

    Hi There,
We have just upgraded all design computers to imac and  upgraded our software to CS5 and we are still having the same problem.
I  called Adobe at the beginning of the week and they told me to speak to  our IT department as it could be an issue with the preferances on out  network.
Last time I spoke with IT they told me it was an Adobe issue. I  am still very concerned about it but I have a tiny bit of relief that  someone else is having the same trouble (although very annoying).
Any ideas on how to fix it? Are you running a windows server?
Please let me know if you find out any relevant info on this and I will do the same.
    Thanks

  • Windows 8.1 ICS with file sharing between computers

Can someone help me get ICS working with file sharing between two computers (directly connected), without enabling file sharing on the internet network (on a public untrusted network)?  Is this possible?  I have set up ICS between two Windows 8.1
machines, but i can only get file sharing to work in one direction (from machine B to machine A)... UNLESS I turn on file sharing/discovery with the entire network from machine A (which i do not want to do).  I am not sure this exact question has been
asked, so my apologies if it has.
    Here is my configuration.
Machine A: win 8.1 (up to date), two NICs:  a wireless card (connected to internet) and a gigabit NIC (connected to machine B)
Machine B: win 8.1 (up to date), one NIC, a gigabit card connected to machine A
    What i did:
On Machine A:  I enabled ICS on machine A's wireless card, which automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.137.1 to the second NIC
On Machine B:DHCP was enabled so it automatically got an ip address (192.168.137.62), internet sharing works fine (i can open a browser, get email, etc.)
On Machine B: I enabled "Find devices and content" on the network device
On Machine A: Going into "view network settings" it lists my wireless network and the gigabit NIC.  The wireless under 'Wi-Fi' says 'Connected', and i can click on this and I have the option to turn on "Find devices and content".
On the wifi connection, i leave 'Find devices and content' turned OFF (so i don't discover computers on the wireless network, which is a public network).  My gigabit NIC shows up as "unidentified network"/"Limited".
When i click on the gigabit NIC, it does NOT give me an option to turn on "Find devices and content", it just shows some properties of the NIC (manufacturer, description, driver, mac address) and button that says "Copy".  On
the gigabit connection's properties (which is listed as "unidentified network/limited"), the option for 'Find devices and content' is missing.
On Machine A: I open a file browser and type '\\192.168.137.62' and it works correctly, i can see the computer and move files around.
On Machine B: It doesn't work.  I open a file browser and type in "\\192.168.137.1", and nothing happens.
If i enable 'Find devices and content' on machine A's wifi connection, everything works, but now everyone on the public network can see my computer.
Question:  How can i enable file sharing between machine A and machine B ONLY?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The whole point of public networks is that they are unsafe, so file sharing is not permitted for your protection.
If you have a network which you know is safe, the way to get file sharing working is to change your security policy so that it is set to private, not public. You do this from the local security policy (on the ICS computer).

  • Install Tiger with file sharing?

I have an Emac with a cd drive. I realize I can install Tiger via target disk mode with another Mac with dvd capabilities. I can also see how this might be the preferred method.

I think there is not native rule for this, but you could try a transport rule which removes all attachments over a very small file size like 1KB.

  • Any issues with file sharing between Windows and latest Mac client?

We're running Lync 2013. My Windows client is 15.0.4551.1005. Mac client is version 14.0.8.
I open a conversation with a coworker on his Mac. I then try to share a png file. He clicks accept but then my client says the attempt timed out, and his client says that I canceled the file transfer. The coworker then boots the Mac into Windows and we try
again, and the file share works fine. When I jump on my Mac, I can send files to his Mac without issue. When he tries to send from his Mac to my PC it fails, but when he tries to send from Windows on his Mac to my PC, it works.
I can't find anything specific in the logs that would indicate a firewall issue. Is there a bug with file sharing between the Mac and PC clients?
    Thanks,
    Matt

No, There isn't a bug with file sharing between Mac and Pc client.

  • Issues with file sharing after changing password

Last night I changed my system password on my MacBook Pro and for some reason it caused some issues with my file sharing with my windows PC.
I was able to finally get the notebook to connect again to the XP PC shared documents by going through finder to go to network and then connected. But the PC would not see the notebook. Everything was communicating fine when I first got the system two weeks ago.
Tech support did what they could tonight and I finally just decided to set up a connection to my notebook by entering the notebooks ip address on the pc.
It's alte and sorry for the rambling, but does anyone know why the pc (as well as others in the house) no longer see the notebook?

  • Weird issues with file share using both SMB and AFP?

I use my Xserve with 10.4 server primarily as a file server (with a huge RAID array attached via Ultra320 SCSI). I've served files from this server over SMB ("Windows" sharing) to both PCs and Macs for a few years now with no big issues. The files are being shared in a collaborative environment with extensive user accounts and ACLs set up.
I would like to turn on AFP for these same file shares, so those accessing with a Mac can have the added benefits of AFP over SMB. However, I've heard some rumors of some complicated issues developing from the use of both AFP and SMB together on the same folders, in a mixed environment.
The rumors I've heard are things that would happen rarely but enough for it to be significant. For example, a file created over SMB and then edited over AFP would have some problems being re-edited over SMB again, due to some complicated feature that the rumor is unable to explain (something with a resource fork or file locking?). Maybe something weird that just involves the Adobe Creative Suite?
Anyway, I figured I'd throw this out there. Anyone who serves files over both protocols to a varied set of computers and applications having weird issues? Or is everything working for you? Thanks in advance.

    re:crop
It's coming in as cropped with no way to fix it that I can see.
Pressing space or opening in preview shows the full image but if it gets anywhere near Photoshop it comes in auto-cropped.
I'm starting to this it's a bug and will be reporting it to Adobe.

  • Frustrated with file sharing to windows

Prior to Leopard, file sharing was SO easy it was one of the greatest features of owning a Mac at my Windows centric office. Now after installing Leopard, MONTHS of reading online forums and the discussions here has gotten me nowhere. The only success I've has has been with FTP.
Can someone PLEASE help me or direct me to the proper tutorial of how to share files on my MacBook Pro with Windows machines? [I don't believe I just begged for help with my Mac!]
What I have accomplished so far is enable sharing in the Sharing Pref Pane and I turned on SMB as everyone has suggested. My Windows machine can see my user folder and all the folders within it but I can not open any of those folders. If I change the access for Everyone to Read & Write then I can do what I'm trying to achieve. Obviously I don't want everyone on my network to have access.
It would seem to me that I'm looking for a simple dialog window on the Windows machine to enter my user name and password but I don't see that. I can not find anyway to "LOG" in to the MacBook Pro.
Why is it that I'm reading all this praise for Leopards new and improved file sharing features yet it seems like they've broken what had worked in the past?
Now that I think about it, I think I was running SharePoint before so that was probably why I never had any issues before. That program unfortunately no longer works in Leopard.

I'm a little confused now. I did as you suggested bulldog and created an account in the Sharing Pane with the same user name and password that I use on my Windows machine and gave it Read & Write Access.
When I went to my Windows computer and attempted to navigate from Network Places to Workgroup, Workgroup was not there. I tried to reset my network connection and refresh the window but could never get Workgroup to come up.
I then tried one of my previously mapped shares ("user" on Anthony's MBP) and got an error.
I figured maybe that mapped share's IP got screwed up or something so I went to RUN and typed in my IP address of the Mac. 192.168.1.2/homefolder This actually prompted me for a user name and password! I entered the UN/PW that I had just created, the same one that I use to log in to my Windows machine, and got nothing. It tried to put PCNAME/ before my user name.
Then I tried my UN/PW that I use on my Mac and that FINALLY worked. The confusing part is I KNOW that I've tried this many times before - it's always the FIRST thing that I try. I liked your idea Bulldog and thought that for sure it should work and I like how it limited access to certain folders for that user name.
To add further to the confusion, I thought I'd give everything a second chance before I submit this post. I disconnected from the shared folder on my Windows computer to try and start over. It seems that now Workgroup is showing up. When I double click on that I see my Mac. When I double click on that I get a prompt for a user name and password. I tried both my Mac and Windows usernames and now NEITHER are working.
I turn off File sharing to try to reset it on the Mac side and turn it back on. Workgroup is still present in Windows but when I double click it, it now stalled for 30 seconds and gives me a network path not found error. I repair my network connection in Windows, Workgroup goes away.
I try RUN IP address again and it says that 192.168.1.2/homefolder is not available. I double check and verify that File Sharing is turned on and Read & Write is on for both Mac and Windows user names.
I restart the Windows computer (incidentally a Macbook)
    No change
I, again, turn OFF File Sharing - Turn it back on. Now I realize that when you restart file sharing you have to go back to Options and turn on SMB! Doh!
Still no Workgroup but when I enter the IP address I get a prompt. I want to see if Workgroup shows up first though.
I can't get Workgroup to show no matter what I do. I go back to enter my Mac's IP address/homefolder and try the Windows UN/PW and that still does not work. Only entering my Mac's UN/PW works at this point.
For the moment, this will do for me. But it's still not correct from what I can tell. NOR IS IT EASY! Especially considering that what I have found to successfully work today is EXACTLY what I have ALWAYS used to access my Mac computers from a Windows computer.
NOW that I'm connected (?), Workgroup shows up! I double clicked on it and it again prompted me for a username and password. I entered the same one that I used in the last step (Mac UN) and it successfully revealed all the mounted volumes on the Mac.
This is still not solved because I can only get one username to connect remotely to my Mac. Thanks for the help though!

  • Time Capsule - problems with file sharing

Time Capsule is working great with Time Machine, but I can't copy files to it even after enabling file sharing in AirPort Utility. I'd really like to move my iTunes library to it since the external drive it currently lives on is full and the TC has about 1.96TB still free. Any thoughts on what the problem is? I see it under "shared" in Finder, but all I can see is the "data" folder and I get warnings that the drive is read only. Thanks for any help you all might be able to provide!

Not Bob .. but it is fairly simple.
When we say external drive we mean a drive plugged physically directly into the Mac.
It can then be backed up by TM.
Just open the TM preference and click on the options.. it should automagically include all disks connected to local machine. You can exclude a drive though. Make sure nothing is excluded .. if it is uncheck it.
TM cannot backup a Network drive but can use a drive as long as it is correctly formatted and accessible to Mac OS as a target for the backup.
I would also recommend you do a straight backup of your disk. 500GB drive is cheap. Get a USB holder and do that direct file copy or use a software like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. The later can make a direct copy of the disk in the freeware version. IMHO it is a lot easier to recover.. the increments if you already have the bulk.

  • Help!  Trying to access a share disk with file sharing- problems

I have limited knowledge of file sharing, keychain access, and Macs in general.
My school uses the Mac OS 9's for our schoolwide "Accerated Reader" program (a common program for schools accross the US).
I am unable to get the 4th grade class room's Mac computer to access the share disk "AR Folder," which means that the Accerated Reader program won't work in this particular classroom.
I go to "Keychain Access." The infor I get for "kind" is "Apple Share password." I go to "Unlock Keychain: AR Computer," and I type in the correct password. I click "unlock". The next window shows "Keychain: "AR COMPUTER" on disk "MACINTOSH HD" 2 items. My choices are "AR Main Lab" and "AR Main Server." When I click on both (one at a time), and on the next window, when I click "go there" the following error message appears:
:An error has occurred. Unable to go to this item's location. An operating system (-5016) occurred."
What can I do from here on? WHat could be wrong? Help me troubleshoot!
    Thanks!

    Hello sylves,
First..many people may be hesitant to help answer your posts as it deals with a school and security issues and passwords. It is not too good to mispell "accelerated". This could indicate someone trying to get into an area they don't have permission to access.
    I offer sevreal ideas.
    1. Perhaps you could explain your position in school.
    2. - Ask the tech people at school for assistance. I know this can be had at times. I work in a school with all PC's and only a few Macs so they are not quite up to fixing our mac problems.
    3. - post more info as to if these computers are able to use internet or are they just going to the school server etc.
I post this as ideas how to get more help and not disrespectfully.....Jim
