Condensation behind glass

Started up my new 24" iMac for the first time. Loved the screen, until I shut down and noticed something white on the bottom edge over to the right. Is it dust, no. Is it scratches, no. Then it began to fade until it had disappeared. Could only be condensation.
Have any others experienced this? Is it an ongoing problem or a one-off?

Had the same problem on my imac, but I noticed it a few months after I bought it and didn't know what it was for sure. Now I know and brought it to a reseller, they said Apple warranty didn't cover any issues on the glass of the screen. I had to call the people at Apple and they said the only thing they would do is try to clean the screen. They did but the screen is still marked. I would say it's even worse, now it has also fingerprints on it.
I called Apple again and they said they could do nothing for me. They offered me a 50 € discount on the Apple Store (wich doesn't solve my problem at all).
It's a shame, really, I'm very disappointed.
Here you can see the condensations, the girl at Apple told me to send her some pics and told me she was confused and didn't understand what she was looking at:

  • Keeping Thunderbolt Display Free of Smudges/Dust Behind Glass

    Hello,
My brother has an iMac and he's told me about an issue with air quality and the accumulation of dust/smudges behind the screen glass. From reading the manual that came with my Thunderbolt display I understand that this can be an issue for it as well.
I am in the city, in a high air pollution area. There is a lot of dust. I'd like to prevent this issue before it becomes a problem. Keeping the area surounding the display dust free is obvious but I'm still worried about it. I did not buy this display so it could have smudges behind glass in 2 years.
I think an air filter would be best. Something that is low profile. Anyone know of such a product or has something like this in place?

    Hi Clinton,
Thanks for the idea. I have been researching airfilters.. notably smaller desktop airfilters. I read on one of the other forums that the display issue concerns microscopic dust so I'm going to go for a HEPA type air filter, the types people with allergies use.
Incidentally I found one that runs off a the mac USB connector (not that it was on my wish list) but its small and doesn't look bad either. My only reservation is it is sold by a company I'm not familiar with. I can't find the manufacturer and so getting replacement filters down the road may be an issue.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • 24" iMac screen mist behind glass

For a couple of months now my 24" iMac screen keep misting up behind the glass around 30 mins after booting - anyone know a resolution for this? Will Apple replace the screen even though i've had it around 4/5 years now?

It is common to get condensation between the display and front glass panel, if it is humidity and cool in your office or home.
A few things that you might try, are
    1. Reduce the level humidity with a dehumidifier.
    2. Leave the iMac on longer until the condensation dissipates.
    3. Remove the front panel yourself and clean between the display and glass.
Will Apple replace the screen even though i've had it around 4/5 years now?
No, but if you contact your local Apple Store or AASP you can schedule an appointment to have it dried and cleaned.

  • Macbook Pro 13 (mid-2009) dust behind glass

    Hi there,
I bought my MBP 13 just 2 weeks ago and while cleaning the glass panel today I discovered dust behind the glass. So there is dust between glass and LCD.
Is this normal? Should I be worried? Should I return my MBP? I mean if it is a common problem I might keep it...
    Best wishes.

No I did not personally upgrade the componments. I bought the standard 2.26 13" model with the extra ram and HD space, as a student I got it at a fair price. So it was already assembled when it got to me.

  • Dead insect behind glass on iMac

I have a 27 iMac (late 2012) that has what looks like a dead insect behind the glass (Excel is shown behind the bug).
I have no idea how it got there and it wasn't there a week ago.
I was under the impression that nothing could get in there based on this quote from Apple's iMac website:
The LCD itself is 5 mm thinner than before, and we used an advanced process called full lamination to eliminate a 2-mm gap between the LCD and the glass, something that has never been done on a display this large.
I'm still under warranty and under AppleCare.
Any idea on how to rid myself of this bug?  Or keep this from happening again?

If you have AppleCare, definitely call them and have them debug it.

  • Help! Imac screen steaming up behind glass!

I only notice this when the mac has been on a while. The screen begins to steam up and u can see like smuges behind the glass making it really difficult to see the display!! I know the screen can be pulled off and cleaned but I can't keep doing that everyone I use it! Any help would be great

Removing the glass and giving everything a good clean is easy, just be careful. I'm not particularly good at taking things apart and putting them back together, but in my view it would be difficult to mess up. I've done it several times on various Macs and haven't smashed a single screen .
I've used a suction cap from a satnav to pull the glass gently from the top - be aware that the magnets that hold the screen on are quite strong so once it pulls forward it'll want to snap back if you don't pull it away smoothly and gently. I slip a finger behind to stop the glass snapping back.
Once it's off it surprisingly lightweight. Lay it on a soft surface and give it a good clean. You might want to give the actual screen a clean as well while you're in there.
As has been said above, it can be difficult to ensure that there are no dust specks left behind but a soft lint-free cloth will be your friend here.
When you put the glass back there are guide pins that make positioning easy, just remember that as you close the screen back it'll want to snap back with the pull of the magnets so be careful to ease it back with a fingertip at the top to help you position it gently.
N.B. I always do this with the Mac off and unplugged .

  • IMac 27" Strange Screen Marks Behind Glass

    Hi
I've had my 27" iMac since march this year, yesterday I noticed that there is a strange yellow/brown blotchy patch in the top right hand corner, it is not on the front of the glass (it cant be wiped off) its on the INSIDE! I tried to take some pic's but my camera is useless and it looked like it was picking up a lot of light interference from the display itself.
Anyway I have done some reading into this and a common thing that came up was smoke, well I don't smoke so it's not that. I don't have Apple Care but its still under the first year of warranty, and I don't have the balls to take the glass off and clean it.
Has this happened to anyone else? And is it covered under the first year of warranty?
    Regards
    Marky

Take it in. They will give you a new screen, as they did for me for my 24" about 6 months ago and will have to do for my husband's 27" iMac, since his has developed this issue too. Behind the screen shows lines that look like long lines of dripping dust.
My machine has now developed a sound issue - no sound out when I plug in the external speakers. I will take it in to get that fixed. They have already replaced the motherboard once for a spontaneous shutdown issue it was having. And my husband's will suddenly not read data DVDs - could not install Aperture. Don;t know if he can boot from the DVD now.
I mention all this to tell you that, while inconvenient to take it to Apple and wait for them to fix it, while it is covered you should always go that route for the "hmmmm?" stuff. They'll fix it, most like;y with new parts.
And to get the best coverage for the longest amount of time, buy Apple Care, if you have not done so already. This has saved us many, many times over the years and all our machines. We always buy it. We don't always need to use it but when we do need to, it is GREAT to be able to just call them up and ask questions. Or just take in a sick machine and have them fix it.
You have to buy Apple Care and register it to your machine BEFORE the year of support you got when you bought your iMac runs out. You cannot buy it and use it after that 1st year is up; it must be purchased and registered to your machine before that 1st year is over. Apple Care will add 2 years of support for your machine. It has been worth it for us. Phone support, hardware support.

  • Cut or Inverse Masking via Blend.Layer + Blend.Erase = no mouse event listener for objects behind "glass wall"

I've successfully erased unwanted graphics using Blend and I can drag a desired object that is behind the erased area, but the dragged object does not have mouse events unless I drag if from behind the erased area.  Does anyone know a good work around or how I can force the event to be dispatched when the object behind the "glass wall" is clicked?  I can't find documentation anywhere that addresses this situation.  If an object behind can not be selected how is it really erased?  Thanks in advance!

Yes, and I want to keep it behind.  It's visible and can be dragged, but
since behind the transparent area that has been erased using Blend.Erase it
no longer receives click events.  Thanks for your response.

  • Early 2011 MBP 17' - Dust behind glass

    Hey all,
I am normally OCD when keeping my electronics clean, and my MBP is no exception. That's why this is driving me NUTS! I was using my MBP to study at the library as per usual, and when I come home and turn it on, theres a splotch of dust or something that is behind the glass on the screen. It isn't directly on the LCD, as I can tell there is a degree of layering. It is on the opposite side of the glass, and is a total eye sore to look at.... I have no idea how this happened. Any chance Apple will help me on this? Or is there a DIY option that isn't too intrusive?

    Do a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    Run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
You may need to use OPTION D to start it.
Install iStat pro and open Activity Monitor.  Set Activity Monitor to show 'All Processes' and '%CPU' to display values from high to low.  Post images of the two such as these:
    Ciao.

  • Moisture? behind glass

When I return to my office on Monday mornings, my iMac (early 2009) has a brownish haze on the inside of the lower right side of the screen. I assume that it is moisture since as the iMac, which has been shut down over the weekend, warms up, the haze gets smaller and finally disappears. Does anyone else notice this? Are there any potential problems developing?
    Rob

I have read of a few people with this, I doubt it's causing that much harm, but since it's not a sealed unit it's possible moisture will get in.
If you want to remove the glass and let it dry out you can either use some sucker cups or a small piece of parcel tape on one edge of the glass, pull gently and it will come away, it's only held on with magnets.

  • Grey smokey marks behind glass on 27" iMac

Does anyone know what this is, what causes it, and if it is covered under the 1 year warranty? It is getting worse and it is extremely annoying for doing any kind of graphics or design work.
    http://imgur.com/a/oPM3m
It's right in the middle/right of my screen and definitely under the glass; I tried using a dry cloth to clean the screen but it did not help.
    Anyone familiar with this issue?
    Thanks

Before you assume it's the TFT screen, it could be just the iMac's protective glass that's cuasing this issue.
This maybe the dirt and smoke culprit
If it's not under AppleCare and you want to save a few bucks in repair costs, the iMac's glass can be removed for cleaning. You need to power down the iMac prior to doing and unplug prior to doing this.
The glass is held on by strong magnets as the back of the iMac's glass uses a metal framework on the back of the glass and can be removed with a little care.
There are two ways to do this.
You can use a thin flat stiff knife putty knife of rigid plastic to pry one of the top corner of the glass away from the iMac's metal frame while holding onto the whole corner of the iMac. Then just use your hands to pry if from the magnets all the way across from the top and then as you proceed down toward the bottom pull toward you to loosen the bottom then lift off. There maybe twosmall  locating pins inthe frame you need to be careful to not lose. They should come out with the frame.
Or you can use two small suction cups to remove the glass. You can use suction cups like the ones you find for hanging plant planters on a glass window of for hanging something on a glass window.
Here is an online procedure for removing the glass here.
    http://www.macframes.com/install.html
    or
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cHMHzq5E5I
    or
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeAZqw-494Q&feature=related
Once removed you can repower your iMac to see if the issue went away. If it did, you know it's the glass scren that's dirty and not the TFT screen.
The protective glass can be cleaned with an amonia free glass cleaner with a microfiber cloth or with something like iKlear screen cleaner with a microfiber cloth or even a micro fibercloth wrung out well in warm water. Clean it laying the glass on something protective like a large terry towel to prevent any damage. Then power down your iMac and carefully replace the screen making sure to put the locating pins back into the metal frame, if they fell out, using the suction cups to hold it while slowly and gently putting it back in place until the glass is caught be the magnets

  • Dust behind glass

I've noticed I have a nice little collection of white specks under my glass screen. Have others had this problem?
Can I use canned air to remove it?
Or should I just head into the apple store?

You can do forum search and find that others have indeed asked this very same question.
I don't remember seeing a fix, other than making an appointment at the Genius Bar to ask for replacement.

  • Dust behind glass panel

I have had Apple tech out 3 times to clean inside part of glass panel in 2 years. Somehow dust/smoke (we have wood stove for primary heat source) is getting sucked between the LCD and glass panel. I just got off the phone with Apple and they will NOT send tech out to clean it as before. I am under extended warranty so cannot do myself (even though I have watched tech removed glass panel with the suction cups) without getting into trouble with Apple over the warranty.
What do I do? I am professional photographer and need every bit of this 24 inch monitor to be CLEAN.
I am horribly upset at Apple for NOT fulfilling their end of the warranty.
Does anyone else STILL have this problem? Last time I looked here on the Mac forums, there were numerous posts and threads regarding this problem.
If you do have this problem, what do you do to correct it?

You can easily do that by yourself. The front glass is just held by magnets, I'd even consider it a servicable part since there are no screws and no warranty seals. Just pull it off, lay it face down on a towel or pillow, use a damp microfiber cloth and then finish with a dry one, put it back and eventually clean the outside. It's just a matter of five minutes.
And you are actually lucky ... others (like myself) had dirt get inside the LCD panel, which is a whole different league of difficulty to fix.

  • How can i get rid of condensation behind the screen?

Hi, my iPod works fine, but after leaving it in my bag during footy training outside and it then raining, it has condesation marks all over the screen. The functionality of the iPod is fine but it is very irratating having these marks over the screen. They are not strong enough to make reading the iPod hard but obviously I'd like to get rid of them.
I understand as it is a matter involving water my warranty won't cover it?
Is there anything else I can do? How hard is it to take it apart?

There are some liquids that you can buy in the shops which makes you clean those marks from your iPod. You can find them in the Apple Stores and most of the computer shops.

  • DUST and particles behind glass screen...

What to do? Isn't this supposed to not happen? I thought at first i just needed to change my screen protector, but when I removed the old one I saw the particles were still there. Will this be covered? It's really annoying and is very noticeable.

You will have to talk to Apple about it.
Some have reported that they have indeed had their iphones replaced. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
You can do a forum search and see what others have said, as this has been asked many times.
