Condense music on ipod that is no longer in my computer's library

Hi. So, I have had a 60gig ipod for God-knows-how-long now....pre2006 I think.  Anyway, I hadn't realized that music was meant to flow only one way (computer to ipod and not vice versa), so I deleted much of my music library from my computer after transferring to my ipod.  I have TONS of cds on there and have completely filled the ipod.  I was hoping to just convert the larger files to MP3s, but this option in iTunes is greyed out when I have my ipod connected. (Obviously, I am not automatically syncing with my current library).  Two questions:
1. MOST IMPORTANT: Is there a way to condense music files directly ON the ipod, when songs aren't in my computer's music library anymore?
2. What is the best option for backing up 60gig or more of music FROM my ipod & other locations & condensing it to the same place/library?
Thanks for your help!
erika

An iPod (especially an old one) is a very dangerous place to keep your only copy of song files.  You should not do (1) at all, even if it is possible.  (I can't think of a way to do it directly.)
There is no way to transfer music from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities for transferring from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer mac," you should get some links.
Once the song files are back on your Mac (and maybe even backed up to a second location), add them to your iTunes library.  Now, you can use the Create AAC Version command in iTunes (menu bar under Advanced) to convert them to a "condensed" format.  Note:  The old files will still be there as well after converting.
In iTunes preferences General tab Import Settings, you can change the conversion options. I recommend using AAC Encoder at iTunes Plus.  That creates 256 kbps AAC files (which is what the iTunes Store uses).  If you want "MP3" files, you can select the MP3 Encoder there.
Then, you can sync your iPod to the converted song files.  And you will have achieved what you wanted with (1), plus your valuable songs files are now backed up on your computer.

  • Frozen ipod that is no longer recognized by computer

Help! My I-pod nano is frozen. It has been frozen before, so I did what Apple.com said to do. It is still frozen! So I decided to plug it in to the computer to charge .. and the I-pod is no longer recognized by my computer!
I've tried a million times to unfreeze it, doing what Apple said, but nothing is working! And why is Itunes not recognizing my I-pod?

    Hi caitt,
I don't know if "what Apple said to do" means that you tried the 5 R's, but that's a good start:
    The 5 R's
    From there, try this:

    And this...
    iPod won't turn on
    Good luck,

  • How can I play my songs from my iPod that are no longer in my computer

When I go to my iPod under devices and click "Music" it shows all the songs I have on my iPod but it's all grayed out and I can not play them from here. Now at first I thought you just couldn't do it but my brother for some reason can... None of his songs are grayed out and they let him play it straight from his ipod.

he is manually managing his ipod song list
where as i am assuming you syncing your music automatically, if you change to manual management you will lose all of your music and have to resync it.

    First try this:
    - Go on iTunes computer
    - plug in the iPod
    - authorize your device from store/authorize
    - iPod / transfer from iPod by right clicking on the left pane
This will only transfer iTunes purchased music, not ripped CDs. and it is unnecessary now, as the music can just be downloaded from the cloud.

Did you restore the iPod on this computer?
What exactly happens when you try to sync?
    Does iTunes see the iPod?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?

does anyone how to take music from ipod and put it on to my computer? i desperatly need to do that so please help me!!!! i will download software if i need to

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

  • Deleting songs on ipod that playlist no longer exist in itunes

I share the itunes with my son and we use to use the auto sync function. I figured out how to manually sync but deleted my original play list some how in between. Now I have playlist on my ipod that is not in itunes. I can drop song into my play list but I cannot figure out how to delete the song no longer wanted on my ipod since I no longer have playlist in itunes....please help.

If you are updating manually, connect your iPod and when it shows in the iTunes 7 source list click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song view. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and either press the delete key on your keyboard or or right click and choose Delete.

  • HT1386 I keep getting a message while downloading purchased music into Ipod that reads " U can download past purchases on this device with just 1 apple ID every 90 days. can b used with another apple ID in 42 days"  what does that mean? cant get music on

I have purchased an  album and its on my computer in library, plays there and on Ipod as downloaded but cant get it in to music. also havent been able to get my music that I download into hard drive to sync either, afraid to restore [reset] because with have to re-download all of my cd s again. HELP

It means exactly what it says. For redownloading via iCloud (which is what you are doing).
Computers and devices can be associated with a different Apple ID once every 90 days. Days remaining indicates the number of days before you can associate that specific computer or device with a different Apple ID.

My goal is to purchase a classic ipod that has much more memory and eventually get rif of the touch but first I need to know if I can lose the nano without losing the muic off it. Any insight would help. Thanks

A portion of my purchaesed items are no longer located on my computer (not sure how) and itunes says that I've already downloaded and will not allow my to re-download and replace the "unlocated" songs.  I tried to delete my purchased items in the hopes that itunes would realized that they are no longer on the computer but now the itunes store doesn't even show those songs that we downloaded prior!

  • How Do I Keep Music On Ipod Touch 4th Gen., But Not On Computer?

Yes, hello, I am wanting to cut down on the amount of space that is on my computer (I almost have 3GB in music and photos on my laptop.. lol, mostly music, though).  However, the problem I see with this right off the bat is that if I delete my music and photos (since they are also on my 4th generation ipod touch), they will be deleted of my ipod.  I know that I can manually manage music, and I know how to do that.  What I need to know is if there is a way that when I go to 'sync' my ipod manually, if I can just update with NEW songs and NEW photos- or, pretty much just 'sync' newly added files (that way, the newly deleted files will not be taken off my ipod).  If I go and 'uncheck' a playlist, it automatically will take it off my ipod.  What I really would like is an option to just add new material to each playlist, or add a new playlist, but not sync the whole ipod or the whole playlist (since, again, it would just end up deleting my songs that would no longer be on my computer).
I really don't mind itunes, however, I'm already figuring I will have to more than likely find a way to add my new songs and photos to my ipod WITHOUT itunes  (since this type of ipod, 4th generation touch, does not have the 'hard disk' feature, I need to know if there is any other way to upload music and photos).
However, if possible, I still want to be able to have the option to add to previous playlists and even create new playlists on Itunes so I can delete files off my computer, but not my ipod.  I just think it is a little inconvienant that with all of these high storage capacity ipods that they don't make it more clear on HOW to have that much space on the ipod WITHOUT filling up and slowing down my computer in the process
Also, I probably could just back-up my music and photos on my flashdrive (it is a 32GB), however, out of curiosity-  even if I AM able to find a way to delete songs and photos off my computer and still keep them on my ipod while still being able to add new songs and photos and create and add to previous playlists WITHOUT having to do a full sync, will there even be a way for my Icloud to NOT be affected and delete the now 'missing from itunes' songs and photos?  I am a firm believer that multiple back-up sources do not hurt (esp. since my flashdrive I've had for a few years now, and ICloud isn't a bad option for a secondary storage- although, I perfer skydrive)

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you regained use of the iPod without restoring (doubtful, restoring will also update the iPod)) then do the following:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
When you restore from backup the iPod will also be updated.
