Conditional Format based on cell value

For example; want to turn a cell yellow if its value is less than another cell value.
Is this possible?
Conditional format rules don't seem to like cell references.

There are many ways to call attention to a value that needs to be emphasized because of its relationship to other values. What you decide to do will be influenced by how particular you are about the end result vs. the trouble that you will have to go through to achieve it. When other cells need to reference a cell that may be either text or numeric, you can use the TRIM function, or other text functions, to remove interfering characters. Here's an example, where you can see the last row multiplying the previous, manipulated row, by 2.
Also, all the cells are formatted as Currency, with to ill effect. In the example I left the cells with the conditional format in default alignment so you could see the added space character against the left margin of the cell.
I think the easiest way to call attention to a cell is to add an adjacent row of column with a conditional expression that 'lights-up' when there is an alarm condition.

  • Entire row conditional formatting based on cell value

What is the best way to apply conditional formatting to an entire row based on the value of one of the columns on that row? For example, I just want to highlight the entire row (make it red color) if the value of one of the columns is greater than 0. The method described in the past discussions is just way to difficult to apply in real life scenarios. I think it should work without any tricks as it's just a very basic functionality of spreadsheets.

The other idea is to make a second table, which has a single column and is as wide as the first table.  This second table will reference the value in the first table which indicates how to shade and is formatted with conditional formatting.  The second table is slid behind the first, AND the first is made transparent.
    - Bottom table refers to original (top) table
bottom table contains conditional formatting as:
Now make the original table transparent by selecting the table and changing the background fill to none.
Now send the second table to the back by selecting the table then the menu item "Arrange > Send to Back"
Now slide the second table under the original

  • Conditional formatting based on formula

I would like to highlight values in a column that are the maximum. If using Excel, would do a conditional format such as Cell Value Is, equal to, =max(a:a)
Has anyone made Numbers do this?

Here is an example of one of the "cheesy" methods, it is a clever workaround:
First image shows two overlapping tables. 2nd Image shows the underlaying table creating the highlights.

  • Is it possible to apply conditional formatting to a cell (or range) based upon a LOOKUP query to cell values in another sheet.? I want to alter the formatting (i.e., text and/or cell background color), but not cell content.

Is it possible to apply conditional formatting to a cell (or range) based upon a LOOKUP query to cell values in another sheet.?
I want to alter the formatting (i.e., text and/or cell background color), but not the content, of the target cell(s).

    Hi Tom,
Your LOOKUP formula will return a value that it finds in the "other" table. That value can be used in conditional highlighting rules. (Numbers 3 calls it conditional highlighting, not conditional formatting. Just to keep us awake, I guess, but it works the same).
Please explain what you are trying to do.

  • Conditional Formatting - how to change cell colour based on cell value

I am in the process of moving some Excel spreadsheets into Numbers on my iPad. The Excel spreadsheet had conditional formatting in certain cells. If the cell value was less than a certain amount (<46 for example), the cell background would automatically turn yellow.
Is there any way to make Numbers on iPad do this?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I beleive this is one of those doable tings on desktop that gets taken out on ipad. If you would like to suggest this as an idea for apple to put in, please go to http://www.apple.com/feedback

  • Conditional format of one cell based on contents of another cell

Preparing list of appointments for visitors with time for each. There are four possible status categories for visitors based on projected activity and whether they have shown up or not. (A Group Scheduled, A Group Showed, B Group Scheduled, B Group Showed). I've created the calendar in iCal with different calendars, then accessed that through Bento iCal Events. Bento adds the column with name of calendar from iCal. Info is now in Numbers. (iWorks 09)
It shows Title, Start Date, Location, Calendar. I'm adding more fields using Lookup in Numbers drawing on entire data base brought over from Bento. I'm trying to get what info I need, but none that I don't, so the form isn't too crowded and busy.
I would like to be able to conditionally format the Time column based on the contents of the Calendar column. If successful, the color of the Time column would tell me all I need to know about visitor status, and I could hide the Calendar column and clean up the form.
I hope I've described it adequately. Can this be done, and if so, how?
    Thanks! Have a great Thanksgiving!

Does it work to format two cells based on contents of one of them?
Conditional formatting of a cell depends on the contents of that individual cell, compared with another value, so no.
But you could use a two-table approach.
In general terms, the technique is to:
    • make the original table's cell fill transparent,
    • Add a second table to the sheet,
    • Set the second table to copy the control values into a column of cells,
    • Select the cells in that column of Table 2,
    • Apply conditional formatting rules for each possible control value (see below)
    • Set the text opacity for these cells to 0 (full transparency),
    • Click on Table 2 in the sidebar, then use (shift and) the arrow keys to slide Table 2 behind Table 1 to align the highlighted cells with the cells to appear highlighted in Table 1.
    • Set the colour of the cell borders on table 2 to none.
Using the information you gave regarding the calendar column, you'll need four rules for conditional formatting of this column. All are of the same format:
    Text contains: A Group Scheduled
With the text changed to match each possible entry.
    Regards,
    Barry
BTW: by changing the width of the formatted column on table 2, you can appear to highlight as many columns as you wish on Table 1.

  • Can conditional formatting refer to the value in another cell

Is there a way for conditional formatting refer to the value of another cell instead of entering the value in the conditional format box?

wwjd is right. no way of doing that.
    WWJD, two wuestions:
    1) do you have the new office 2008 for mac beta (is it out?), how close is it to the new features in Office 2007 for windows, if you do?
    2) why do our pictures keep getting cut off after a day of posting. I posted a pic yesterday and its already not showing on the page the next day. Do they not load them after the question is marked as solved?

  • Conditional formatting of a cell based on a value in another cell

I want to change the color of the text in a cell based on the value in a different cell. How can I accomplish this?

    drmjdoyle,
There Numbers User Guide, http://support.apple.com/en_US/manuals/#iwork, will show you how to do that. Also, doing a search in these forums will provide many hits answering your question.
Click in the cell you want the color to change: click Format > Create custom cell format, in the first dropdown in that dialog box click Choose Rule, then follow the prompts.

  • Conditional formating based on excel formula

    Hi experts!
I have a problem with BPC formatting. Under my EVDRE expansion, I inserted a column to validate some data before sending it. The value of this formula can be TRUE or FALSE and it validates each row of the expansion.
Now, if the value is false, the row or at least some fields of it must turn red so the user knows were are the mistakes.
I have defined under the format range an entry for the heading to evaluate in rows and in format I create the next conditional formatting:: =$I38 = FALSE ---> background red.
When I push the refresh button, the format applies to al heading under the expansion, but the conditional format formula changes to =$I1064034 = FALSE
If I lock the row number, it won't iterate for each row and the format will be based just on one cell instead of one cell per row.
¿Any ideas? ¿Other ways to achieve this? I've also tried to format the cell inside the expand and eliminate the entry on the format range but it doesn't expand to the rest of the cells...
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Nilanjan!
Thanks for the answer, the individual conditional formatting is working fine!
The reason why it wasn't working the first time was because it's incompatible to do individual conditional formatting with conditional formatting on format range.
I gues I'll have to do all the formatting on individual cells...
    Thanks agains!

  • Conditional Formatting in one cell with a dates in another cell

I have a simple spreadsheet that will gauge a project's progress.  I wish to have individual cells change color based on another cell.  I can't get the right syntax in order - groan
    E2 has today's date, =NOW()
G2 (not started) would change from a color to no color when the start date, F27,  has arrived then
H2 (started) would change to a color when the date is met, F27, (may be change color as the completed date arrives) then no color when the completed date arrives, F28.
I2 (completed) would change to a color when the date is met, F28
When the spread sheet is opened or if I need to change the dates in either of the cells the cells with color gauges will update.
I am using conditional formating through the ribbon.

  • Conditional formating if the cell contains any date

    Hi,
In my excel sheet i have one column containing only date (US format) or else they are blank. I want to format the cells containing date to Red color. How do i do it
    Please help

If you mean the font colour, just format the cells to have red font.
So I guess you mean interior colour.
You haven't said which version of Excel - it always helps.
For Excel 2003, for example, select the cells then
Format > Conditional Formatting > Cell Value Is > Greater Than: 0 > Format > Patterns > Red
For Excel 2007 or 2010, Home > Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cells Rules  > Greater Than > 0 with Light red fill

  • How do I format based on the value of the @status attribute?

Example: I use the @status attribute to indicate that a step in a procedure is new or that a paragraph in a concept is new.
For review purposes, I want to format new text as green - preferably a green highlight, but green text will do.
Example: I use the @status attribute to indicate that a step in a procedure has been deleted or that a paragraph in a concept has been deleted.
For review purposes, I want to format new text as crossed out.
Can this be done? If so, where do I set up the formatting for attribute values?
    Thanks in advance.
    Marsha

    Hi Marsha,
If you want the formatting to be "locked in," that is, driven by the EDD, then Lynne's advice is the way to go. If instead it would be sufficient to temporarily color the desired elements as a format override, you could use the AXCM plugin:
    http://www.weststreetconsulting.com/WSC_AXCM.htm
This plugin can do any nature of coloring, strikethrough, etc. based on attribute values and other markup. The coloring is applied as a format override and easily removed by a refresh of the EDD. The coloring features were mainly designed for conditional text purposes, but it would work in this case too.
AXCM is completely free. Disclaimer... I own West Street Consulting and this plugin.

  • Conditional formatting on total cells in pivot table

Hi, i have a pivot table with some values and percentages.
The percentages are in red if less then 0.
I have 1 row and 1 column of total values, but this cell aren't red if percentage is less then 0.
Does anybody know a solution for my problem?
    Thanks

This is the example i create:
    DIM A:
    - Total A
    - Value A
    DIM B:
    - Total B
    - Value B
    FACT:
    - Value A (DIM A)
    - Value B (DIM B)
    - Actual
    - LY
    - Delta % (Calculated: 100*(Actual - LY)/LY)
Then i create the pivot table with B on rows (Σ on Total B), A on cols (Σ on Total A) and measures Actual, LY and Delta %. The last one has a conditional format on Delta % < 0.

  • Conditional formatting: greatest and lowest values in a column?

I have a column of data, with about 30 rows of values. Is it possible to setup conditional formatting so that Numbers highlights the top three highest values and the lowest three values in the column?
    thanks!

    How's this:
    1. Create the second table for the large and small formulas. I did one column, you should be able to copy it to the rest of them.
    2. Create the conditional format for the first data cell in the first row of your data table (go to the cell inspector and choose "show rules" to get to the conditional formatting pane).
    3. Select the cell, Copy Style, select all the other data cells in the row and Paste Style to copy that conditional format to the other columns. At this point, the conditional format in the other columns will be incorrect (they will all refer to the large/small values for the first column), you'll have to modify each manually so they refer to the correct cells in the "large/small" table.
    4. Copy Style and Paste Style each of those conditional formats to the rest of the cells in each column.
One caveat: You may get more than three smallest/largest values highlighted under certain conditions. For instance if you have four 1's and "1" is your smallest value, all four would get highlighted. If you have two 1's and two 2's, and they are your smallest values all four would get highlighted. If you have 1,2,3,3 and they are your smallest values you would also get four highlighted. Similar case for the largest values. It doesn't appearthat this would be a problem for your data.

  • Conditional format based on date

    Hi,
I want to keep track of reports that my students need to turn in. The due date is set, but should turn red 10 days before the actual due date, so I can double check with the student if he started work on his report. Once the report was turned in, the due date should become grey or black. Here's an example:
    Report
    Topic
    Due date
    Finished
    A
    XX
    Jan 26, 2012
    Jan 25, 2012
    B
    YY
    Feb 5, 2012
    C
    ZZ
    Mrz 11, 2012
C3 is read, because its due date is less than 10 days away. C2 is black, because it has been finished on time. C4 is black, because its due date is more than 10 days away (from the perspective of today, Jan. 27th)
While conditional formats can be set based on dates and relative dates, it doesen't allow to compare actual date to a date calculated from a cell, as far as I can see.
Any help with this is very appreciated!
    Thank you!
