Conecting 2wire AT&T modem to Linksys Router

Please help. International tech support has hung up me 3 times. I am looking up a simple Linksys WRT110 Router to an SBC/AT&T 2wire modem. The modem is hooked up to the wall using a coaxial TV cable. Thus, I assume that this is a cable modem. When I run the Linksys provided setup software, it "detects" a router already in place and advises to connect the Router internet port to the existing modem Local Ethernet 1 port. Whatever the case, it doesn't work after conclusion of the setup.
any suggestions?

Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
2. Unplug the router and the modem
3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
5. It will ask you to update your username and password
6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.

Use HH2 as modem for Linksys router

OK, so i have BT broadband and the HH2. I live in a flat with 5 other people, and we need the QoS capabilities of the Linksys WRT54GL.
To get internet working i need to use the HH2 as a modem that plugs into the Linksys router.
Iv followed a few guides on these forums but none of them worked.
S basically right now the HH2 is connected to the ADSL line then from its ethernet port 1 its connected to the linksys's internet ethernet port. I have disabled firewalls on both devices and DHCP on the linksys.
I am now stuck for ideas...
So please could someone give me step by step instructions on how to get this setup to work?

1. Using a PC wired into the current router, unplug it from the wired connection and plug into a LAN port on the secondary router. Access the secondary router using your browser via its default LAN IP address and default password. Since the PC was attached to the previous router you will have tell the PC to obtain a LAN IP from the new device. Use 'ipconfig release/renew' on the PC.
2. On the secondary router (hereafter called the AP)
a. change the default password to a minimum combination of 8 letters/numbers/symbols.
b. Change the ESSID to a unique name and make all the necessary wireless configurations.
Note: If attaching a WiFi router as an AP/switch to an existing wifi network, one should keep the ESSIDs the same for seamless roaming, or separate if one wants to manually decide which AP to connect to. Also, ensure channel separation (1-6-11 common for three devices).
3. In the AP, go to the LAN setup page:
a. Turn DHCP serving OFF.
b. Change the LAN IP of the AP from its default so that it lies within the subnet of the primary router but preferably outside the dynamic LAN IP range of the primary router. (examples below)
c. Disable or turn RIP off, if there is that option.
d. Disable or turn off Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) support (if any).
4. Plug the PC back into the wired connection and repeat the process of getting new LAN IP. A reboot of the PC may be needed.
5. Plug the AP into the router, LAN port TO LAN port directly or via switch/patch panel etc. (NOT into the WAN socket...)
6. It may be necessary to reboot one or both routers but one should be able to assign LAN IPs wirelessly and connect at this point, ensuring WiFi card setup properly.
Example:
Primary Router
LAN IP 192.168.1.1
old Dynamic DHCP Pool 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.xx
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Will need to change Dynamic DHCP pool
new DCHP Pool 192.168.1.33 - 192.168.1.xx (for example)
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Secondary Router (our Access Point)
old LAN IP 192.168.0.1 -or any other default
Will need to change LAN IP to be within subnet of primary.
new LAN IP 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Shouldn't need a crossover cable (most routers are intelligent enogh to realise what they're connecting to)

Port Forwarding for Counter Strike Server - DSL Modem to Linksys Router then to my Laptop (wifi)

i have read many posts here but did not find any solution. Below is my current situation.
Objective: I want to create a Counter Strike 1.6 Server and for that i have to forward port 27015.
Networking Issues: Im currently using a Shiro (Dsl Modem) which is given by my ISP & i have connected my DSL modem to my Linksys WRT54G (ver 7.2) router. I connect my laptop thorugh wifi to router.
I know basic port forwarding but that does not help me. I need a complete tutorial on this issue coz i dont have much network knowledge.

Installed Linksys Router but IP address shows Netgear Information

Trying to setup security for my Linksys Router that I didn't do when I first installed it, but when I access the Routers IP address page, Netgear information comes up. How is this possible? I had the Linksys rep on line trying to get help, and she got real testy with me when I told her what was happening. Any advice?

Is this cascaded then to another router? How does your connection go? Modem to Linksys router then to computers? Or do you have other devices namely of course a netgear device connected to your network?
Go to start --> run --> cmd and type in ipconfig. What is your default gateway? That should be one that you should attempt to type to access the router configuration page.

Linksys router no longer works with Westell 6100 modem

Hi all,
I came back after a 3 month work absence (and many days power outages, according to the neighbors), to find that my system can no longer connect to the internet using the Verizon Westell 6100 modem to a Linksys wrt54G router to 2 PCs!
I reset the Westell modem and directly connected the PC to it and THAT works okay, but put the router back in the mix (so I can connect my other PC) and nothing works!
I have read on this forum about 'Bridgeing" the Westell modem but nothing about setting up the router.
Can someone PLEASE give me explicit instructions on how to:
    1.) set up the Westell modem in this "Bridge" mode,
    2.) Set up the Linksys router to work with the modem again??
    3.) Tell me why the old setup no longer works, did verizon change something for this modem?

the router has two connections. one is called a WAN and that is a wide area network, and it means the internet in your case. and one is called a LAN, local area network.
what you saw means - that the way you connect to your internet is through PPPoE, a username and a password.
and then way your LAN connects is DHCP, how all of your local computers connect. This is important, because after you bridge the westell, you will be setting your Linksys up for PPPoE connection, and NOT DHCP. if you don't do this step, then you will never connect.
that is fine, and normal. if you follow the instructions at the link provided - you will be able to connect real easily.
you will want to bridge the westell just follow the instructions for "If your Westell uses the red and black Verizon firmware:"

Can't connect LINKSYS router to DSL modem

I'm trying to set up a WRT54GS2 Linksys router with a D-Link DSL-2320b modem. Have a Westell 6100 modem that is going bad, so I bought the D-Link to replace it. Originally had a D-Link router connected with the Westell, but the router overheats often and has to be reset.
I have been able to connect to the internet using the DSL-2320b modem only, but once I add the Linksys router I am not able to connect to the modem. The Linksys router came from a cable modem connection for which it worked fine. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that they both use the same IP, 192.168.1.1. I have tried changing the IP of the modem, but still having issues.
Any help will greatly be appreciated. I'm still able to use my old setup to connect to the internet now, but the Westell shut down my phone line today and had to be turned off and back on. I'm hoping to be able to replace this as soon as possible. Thanks in advance...

Connect the Mode to the router on the Internet port and the computer to the router on the Ethernet port..If the IP address of the Modem is 192.168.1.x then,change the ip address of the linksys router to 192.168.2.1 and power cycle the entire network and check...

Issue with Linksys Router and Modem with Vonage Device

I have a Linksys Router and Cable Modem. Plus I have Vonage for my home phone. I have been having several problems and now, my Vonage phone will not work at all. I have cable internet and my ISP is Cox Commuication. I do not know how to connect my Vonage device with my Router and Modem. People have been giving me advice, but nothing has worked.
Does anyone know how to intergrate all three of these items together? Basically which plug goes where. Currently my phone is not working. The only thing that is in use right now is my linksys cable modem. I have the power cord plugged in, the blue cord from the modem plugged into my laptop, and the cable from the modem to the wall jack. Please help. Thank-You!

OS9 - Comcast dhcp modem - Linksys Router

I have been running both DSL(OS9) and Cable modems(OSX) for several months. Now it's time for SBC to go - I have about 10 reasons why, which I won't bore you with. One reason is speed. DSL=200K ($50), and Cable=an unbelievable 15M ($42).
I have just set up a Linksys 4-port Ethernet router with a Comcast Scientific Atlanta cable modem. Two computers are connected - a Compac PC on Port1(W2000), and a digital audio G4 on Port2(OS 10.3.9). Works great - was surprisingly easy!
BUT, I also want to boot from a second drive in the G4 running OS 9.2, due to various OS9 applications I love, that have no OSX counterpart. But I can't get it to work. (Was using DSL for OS9.)
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to configure my OS9 system properly, to get it to work with the Linksys router.

I was surprised the dhcp setting that Don suggested did not resolve your issue.
I have OS X and OS 9 computers running on a home network connected through a D-Link router which is connected to Comcast's Motorola Cable Modem. A similar set-up to what you describe. (BTW, I don't think Comcast would not talk to you because you don't use their router, my third party router hasn't been an issue when I've called Comcast) Also, I'm in NJ, Comcast doesn't require a Client ID or number here, but I don't know if that holds true everywhere.
Unless you recall specifically requesting a Static IP when you started with Comcast, I'm pretty sure you have Dynamically assigned IP, which as Don suggested, requires you simply set the panel as Using DHCP Server and your IP is assigned.
A clue may lie with what your successful OS X settings are: take a look at your Network Preferences in OS X, these should be the same on your OS 9 TCP/IP control panel set-up (I'm assuming you are booting up in 9, not running Classic within X)
I don't have a definitive solution, but some things I'd look at in OS 9:
TCP/IP Control Panel
Switch to Advanced User Mode (I think that's under one of the menus, don't have 9 handy right now to check, sorry) - it's more configurable that way, and make sure you have the TCP/IP Always On option checked off, button is on bottom right, brings up dialog.
I would also make sure you have Appletalk enabled in the Appletalk control panel and that you are connected via Ethernet there too.
Do you have more than one ethernet card? Perhaps in the drop down you are selecting a card that is not connected? If it is a third party ethernet card, is the driver loaded/enabled in extensions?
When in OS 9, can you see your other computers on your network in the Chooser? That may point to an ethernet issue in OS 9. In your browser, can you type in the address of your router and see that? How about the modem itself - try http-//192.168.100.1
I'm out of ideas for now, please write back with experience. As a last resort I'd give Comcast a call rather than pay for a technician, they don't even have to know it's a third party router. Good luck.

Using Airport Extreme with Linksys Router/Modem

I was just told that my Mac mini is excruiatingly slow on the internet because I am using a Linksys router with Xfinity and that Airport Extreme will be much faster. And that I should plug Airport Extreme into the modem. When I checked, I don't have a separate modem. My Linksys is a combined router/modem. What should I do? Do I plug the Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, or do I get a completely different modem that is only a modem? And, if I plug Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, how do I configure the network for Airport Extreme, and what else do I need to do? All help greatlly appreciated...I can barely get onto the Apple website!

When I signed up with Xfinity one of the stipulations was that they would not install a router/modem but only a modem. I had heard of problems with their router/modem and I didn't want to go down that path.
I don't but you mighht be able to get them to change out your router/modem for a modem. I would start there by asking them.

Anyone have the comcast typical inet setup with the SB5120, I also use the LinkSys WRT55AG but only hardwired...
I can't get inet access, I've tried numerous suggestions...
When most folks said to clone the MAC addy, when you check the tab in the routers config, does it update itself or do you have to physically enter it.

On your Router setup page click on the Sub tab "MAC Add Clone" and below check the box "Enable" and below click on "Clone My PC's MAC" and click on Save Settings..... It will automatically update the MAC add of your Computer on the Router.
Once you done with this settings you need to unplug the power from the Router and Modem, wait for 30sec and then first plug the power to the Modem and once all the lights are lid, then you can plug the power to the Linksys Router.
Now check if you are able to go online.

Let me know the name of the ISP- means it’s a cable connection or a DSL connection? Do you get the internet connection when you connect the modem directly to the computer? If yes, what IP address do you get on the computer? To check the IP address that you are getting from the Router...
You can check the IP address in the following manner:
# Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.
# A black pop up box should come up, type: "ipconfig /all" …
There check the IP address and Default Gateway under LAN….

DSL Modem + Linksys Router

I have DSL Modem connected with linksys router and linksys router is connected with normal switch all our workstations are directly connected with switch. now let me tell you the configuration also.
DSL MODEM
ISP DEDICATED IP : ***.***.**.**
LOCAL IP : 192.168.1.1
DHCP ENABLED
LINKSYSROUTER
DHCP ENABLED
LOCAL IP: 192.168.2.1
LINK IP: 192.168.1.5 (Assigned by DSL MODEM DHCP)
DNS: Assigned by DSL Modem
WORKSTATION
LOCAL IP: Assigned by Linksys router for e.g 192.168.2.100
Now my problem is that after every one hour we get disconnect from the router when we ping the router 192.168.2.1 from workstation it says "Request timed out" and when we give a power cycle to router its repling by ping command, I am also using WLAN on this router.

Why so difficult?

You might need to add a static LAN route on the linksys like
192.168.1.0 -> 192.168.1.1 (mask 255.255.255.0)

Please help... Linksys router and Imac help

I just switched to Mac, but I might be returning the Imac and getting a Dell or something because it's getting a little ridiculous.
My IP address on my Linksys router is not being recognized by the airport in my new Imac. It took FOREVER for me to get this to work and now it has crapped out 2 times in the last 4 days. I am about to take this new Mac back to the store and go back to a Dell.
Here is a basic description of what is happening:
When I do a diagnostic test I click on Airport and it is saying that the airport signal is fine (green dots), but it doesn't find the IP address. I select my network name that the Airport is picking up and still nothing. I can even get online by selecting a different wi-fi signal from someone that lives close to me too. It's obviously something with my Linksys router that does not work well with my Mac.
Also, even when my Mac doesn't get online, my Ps3 and 360 both still do so I know it is the computer/router that is the problem.
I try unplugging the router, modem, restarting...etc. but it just seems so wierd that it goes off like that.... It's also very annoying, because then I have to hear from my wife about that we spent $1500 on a computer that won't get online some of the time, when I can still get online on my PS3 and 360.
By the way, when I am not connected to the internet Safari will NOT let me put in the 192.168.1.1 in the address bar to get to my router settings. But I did check them from my PS3 and the "clone my MAC" thing is still enabled.
Apple's software update tells me there's no new software available for my machine, which leaves me with no idea what's causing this or how to fix it.
Any advice, solutions, or tips are greatly appreciated.
Can anyone please help me??? If this is going to be a continuous problem, I am taking the computer back and getting a new Dell or something since we mostly use the computer for the internet functions.

Let's double-check your iMac's AirPort settings ...
System Preferences > Network > AirPort
o Location: Automatic
o In the left column, verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "+" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
o Verify that AirPort is "On." Click "Turn AirPort On" button if not.
o Ask to join new networks: (enabled)
o Show AirPort status in menu bar: (enabled)
Systems Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced
