Conference mic suggestions

I'm looking for some recomendations on a mic that would work well for a conference room environment.
I have G4 with an iSight camera setup in our conference room. I want to be able to give presentations to people in the conf room from remote locations using iChat audio/video. So far it's worked OK just using the iSight mic but I have to move the camera far enough away in order to fit all participants in the frame, which makes it hard to hear people on the other side of the room.
I'd like to get an additional mic that I could place in the middle of the conf table so the sound level/quality on my remote end is better.
Any good suggestions without spending a fortune?
Thanks

Try a Sony ECM-MS907 Stereo Microphone - its quite cheap (around $70), but surprisingly good. It has a stereo pickup, with two directional settings available - a wide stereo spread which is good for people sitting around a table, and a more directional setting - useful for one person talking usually.
They are quite popular with journos and suchlike as they are small, run on one AA battery, and have a stereo minijack plug, so can be used with most recording devices. I am a TV sound recordist and i sometimes use them to get me out of trouble in similar situations.

  • Need Mic suggestions for solo guitar video...

I have a Sony TRV-38 mini DV and need suggestions for an external mic. I want to video a solo guitar player sitting in a chair. Would I need to mic the guitar from a mic stand in front of him or would some sort of shotgun mic do the trick? Would buying a Beachtek unit be the best way to go, or is there a simpler/cheaper mic alternative that gives very good results. This is primarily just for good sounding archival footage.
    Thanks for any help.
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

there are a couple of approaches... you can close mic, but if you are experimenting with your equipment and techniques, it is quite possible that you could get a very colored tone and not accurately depict the performace from a sonic standpoint.
something that is quick, easy, and relatively high performance at a budget is to use an M-S stereo shotgun mic. the left channel will be mono hypercardoid aimed right at the performer... with the mic mid range, not close mic'd. the right channel will be the "-S" component of the stereo signal, which is optional and can be decoded with an M-S stereo process in the edit process, or if for example, there was too much ambient noise, simply discard the track and just use the left / mono signal. (personally, i would probably just mount my audio technica M-S stereo mic on my rycote hotshoe adapter, and mic camera mounted... no stands or cables to deal with)
yes, the beachtek or similiar direct interface is the way to go, bypassing the Sony's poor gain stages (disable auto gain control, if possible).
IF sound quality is of the utmost importance, then the real correct way to do this would be to record with 2 mics in an X-Y stero mid field setup. expense, complexity, and possibility of getting something wrong are probably too high to do for something as critical as a 1 take live event if you don't have experience under your belt.

  • Just need a simple mic - suggestions

Just got my Mac Pro 3 weeks ago so I'm getting around to lower-priority needs for it.
My experience with external microphones includes only "cheapies" I used on my eMac. The eMac seemed "bound to not" work with mics. I bought Griffin iMic for that but it only worked a few months (seems that's pretty common occurrence for iMics). So: I threw away those mics in disgust - too bad since I coulda tried them on the Mac Pro now.
Now - the (beautiful) monitor I bought for the Mac Pro came without built-in mic but I don't care because I "like" the advantage of being able to move the mic closer, farther, etc. Just want a mic for occassional use in recording tracks for home vids, etc. Even "semi-pro" equipment of this kind would be a waste for me.
Oh, I plan to just use QuickTime Pro for audio recordings: worked quite well when I could manage input to the eMac.
Any suggestions as to make / model, price, and source for "decent low-cost" microphones?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Malcom,
Thanks for pointing me to the Logitech USB microphone(s). It was a week before I could get to the nearest store selling them (turns out, Radio Shack has them). Then of course, needed more time to try out the new mic. I ended up "upgrading" to the Logitech headset (ear phones & boom mic) - it works perfectly. I also find the boom mic gives much better fidelity - my voice recordings sound like I'm an announcer on NPR now.
Note to others seeking microphones for their Mac: get the USB connect type. The audio in-line on my Macs (past and present) gave "spotty performance" at best. With in-line audio connected mics, a Griffen iMic is usually needed to even get the mic to show up in "Sound" prefs. That device is merely a "USB simulator" of some kind - and I do not believe they last long enough to justify the $35 price.

  • Wireless mic suggestions for podcast

I am interested in video podcasting. I have a sony high def video camera but I want a wireless mic that doesn't cost a thousand dollars. I do not want to hold a handheld--it won't look professional. Any suggestions ? Thank you

you can take a look at the USB mics here:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Microphones.html
but the low end model would probably be a step up only because it won't pick up the HD and fan noises of the computer, if you can swing $79, the middle one should get nicer sound

  • Mic suggestions for recording guitar/voice over the air?

    Hey Folks,
I have an acoustic guitar and would like to buy a mic that would do a decent job of recording both the guitar and my voice. Is there anything in the $50 or less price range? As you can tell, I'm not serious, but would like something a step up from the internal mic.
    Thanks!

  • How can I use an external mic to record meeting audio with quicktime player

I'm trying to use a SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic to record meetings at a conference I am running.
I'm using Quicktime for the recordings.
The SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic does not transmit any sound when connected to the Audio-in plug on my MacBook Pro.
Does my MacBook Pro require external mics that are also powered - connected via a usb port rather than, or at least in addition to, the audio-in plug, for instance?
    What's happening here?
    Steve

Macbook Pro does not have a microphone input
    You have two options:
1 buy a USB mic and connect to a USB port
2 buy a small very cheap sound mixer that has 3.5 mic level input and a line level out put
    something like this:

  • What peripherals do you need to turn your iPhone into a conference room speakerphone?

What peripherals do you need to turn your iPhone into a conference room speakerphone system?
If you buy a separate conference mic and a speaker, can they somehow work together off the iPhone headphone jack like a huge set of group earphones?  What if you want to connect 2 mics and a speaker?
Do you have to be very careful that they can all be attached somehow at the same time?
Are there reasonably priced conference room speakerphone peripherals the work well together that you would recommend?

Why don't you contact Apple and find out?  Certainly if you can find your way around the internet to have been able to find this forum, you can certainly find the number for AppleCare.

Are you getting signal at the Audio Buddy (green leds both light up)?
On the Fast Track interface, I see only ONE mic input and ONE 1/4" input. In their website, I see that it is a SWITCHABLE INPUT.
    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB.html
    " switchable instrument/line input (1/4”) "
This means you can only record ONE input at a time, not both at the same time.
You will need a larger interface in order to record two or more signals at once.

  • Mic for 3rd gen touch

does anyone know if there is a mic that can be used on the 3rd gen touch? i know that the head phones have one but i am looking for something a little smaller and discreet. or has anyone used one that works.thanx.

Of course, I had tried one of the product the "Thumbtack" the last link that I provided above. It's a very good product with great sound recording when recording notes on the apple voice memos application and on skype calls. I will have to agree with the poster the fiend, about the thumbtack product which is only for limiting recording like a notes memos. I haven't tried it on an more open enviroment to see if it could stack up for a lecture recording microphone. The link for the mini clip mic, it seems a bit better since it provides a built-in speaker on the product.
But as far as recording notes and talking on skype(on the thumbtacks)it the best smallest microphone ever for the iPod touch. I had owned that microphone for two months, and so far on my test it always provide a good sound at a good distance of 6 feet(on a small room). Before I forget, I'm glad that the poster cleared out something that you might want to know prior to your final puchase decision. When those microphone are plugged in on the headphone jack it does disable the speakers from the iPod touch, but some applications let you turn the speakers back on even if you have that mic plugged. But if the mic doesn't fit your need the thumbtack provides a good return policy.
I will give you other mic suggestion( that you might want to take on consideration)on amazon website it sells more professional microphone but what you gain in sound recording you lose it on being a discreet mic. Here is the links for the products.

  • Conference Calling Equipment??

    Hi Everyone,
My boss has asked me to get some webchat equipment bought to use for video conferencing all over the world to out clients. We'd be using a PowerBook G4 then a mixture of iChat and Skype.
Can anyone recommend some equipment that would be beneficial to us?
    • What we would ideally need is something that enables us to have a few microphones placed around the table instead of just 1 (so everyone can be heard perfectly). How do I do this and add additional microphones to the one built into the PowerBook? Will it be some sort of hub to plus them al in?
    • We'd need a decent set of microphones - what would you say are good ones on the market?
    • Plus we would need a really decent webcam. I know Apple don't sell iSight's anymore but can anyone recommend a really high quality decent camera? Don't think my boss is bothered about stumping up cash!
Any help would be appreciated as they're gonna be like 4 or 5 of us around the table that need to be heard and seen well by the person/people on the other end - quality is important.
    Cheers guys,
    Mark

Although Macs have a Line-in that will take a 3.5mm jack it needs a hi-line mic or one that has been pre-amped.
A Conference Desk mic would be the way to go I would have thought.
If it happened to be specific for a computer and had a USB lead then that would get around Pre-amping it or making sure it went with the hi-line input.
A basic set of External speakers would aid the quality of the speech from the external end as well. Although a second Screen over Digital OHP may offer that anyway.
A firewire CamCorder with DV out and a Conference mic attached may get around the Pre-amping of the mic. One with a remote that allowed panning may also be an advantage.
Depending on the number of people two or more computers in separate rooms with 2 or three people round a screen may be a viable option.
Although the one computer option does allow you to mute the mic for a private in house discussion (unless they can lip read)
For choices I would contact or visit a local firm or college about what they use.
One, you may be able to test run and two, find out what is available in your area.

  • IChat echo cancellation terrible under Leopard

We have recently migrated everyone to Leopard. iChat audio used to be very good. Now with Leopard the echo suppression seems to be shot. We have to turn the volume and mic gain down a couple of notches from the Tiger settings to get rid of echo.
Has anyone else come across this problem, or even a solution?
    Cheers
    Jason

I used iChat with my colleague today. We had both upgraded to Leopard as well, and the echo was also terrible at first. It was somewhat improved by turning down the volumes as suggested here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306888
but it was definitely less pleasant than iChat on Tiger had been. We tried restarting the conference, as suggested in the doc, but that didn't help as far as we could tell. Basically, we could get something workable by fiddling with the volume (we did wind up using iChat for 1.5 hours) but I was hoping that chatting on Leopard would be better than Tiger, and it felt worse instead.

  • Question on best practice....

    Friends,
Final Cut Studio Pro 5/Soundtrack Pro 1.0.3
    Powerbook G4, 2GB Ram
I have a DV session recorded over 6 hours that I need some assistance with. The audio for the session was recorded in two instances....via a conference "mic" plugged into a Marantz PDM-671 audio recorder onto compactflash (located in the front of the room by the presenter(s)) AND via the built-in mics on our Sony HDR-FX1 video camera. Needless to say, the audio recording on the DV tape is not very good (presenters' voice(s) are distant with lots of "noise" in the foreground), while the Marantz recording is also not great...but better.
Since these two were not linked together or started recording at the same time, the amount/time of recording doesn't match. I'm looking for either of the following:
    (a) Ways to clean up or enhance the audio recording on the DV tape so that the "background" voices of the presenters are moved to the foreground and able to be amplified properly.
    OR
    (b) A software/resource that would allow me to easily match my separate audio recording from the Marantz to the DV tape video, so I could clean up the "better" of the two audio sources, but match the audio and video without having our speakers look like they're in a badly dubbed film.
Any advice or assistance you could give would be great. Thanks.

    Hello Steven,
What I would do in your case since you have 6 hours is to edit the show with the audio off the DV camera. Then, as painfull as this will be, get the better audio from the recorder and sync it back up till it "phases" with the audio from the DV camera. One audio track will have the DV camera audio on it. Create another audio track and import the audio from the recorder and place it on the 2nd audio track. Find the exact "bite" or audio and match it to the start of the DV camera audio clip. Now slip/slid the recorder audio till the sound starts to "phase". This will take awile but in the end works when original camera audio is recorded from across the room. Good luck.

  • How can I download 10.5

I had 10.5 on my macbook.  I was maxed out on hard drive space so I installed a new drive and then installed 10.4 from the discs that came with the macbook.  I honestly can't remember how I ended up with 10.5 previously because I can't find any install discs, but some of my applications don't work now because I only have 10.4.11 but I need the most current version of 10.5.  How can I download it again?

    > I'd consider Snow Leopard but it's not available until July and I kind of need my laptop, like, right now.
Snow Leopard  (10.6) is available now. It is Lion  (10.7) that won't be available until July.  You'll need Snow Leopard in order to install Lion according to what the Developer Conference keynote suggests.  There is a chance that might change, but presently I don't see any other way to ensure that would happen, unless you post feedback that Apple's website is ambiguous about it here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    >Is there any way I can put my old hard drive back in and create a bootable CD from it with the 10.5 OS on it, to then use that to put 10.5 on the larger hard drive?
You just admitted that someone (whom you call the store) upgraded you to 10.5 without giving you a disc.  That 10.5 was not yours to use without the disc.  The disc is part of the license agreement.  I would go back to the store if you still have the case number, and ask why couldn't you buy the disc from them then.  They did you a disservice by not giving you the disc, which can be used to custom install things, and examine any software issues with your system.  I'm not about to explain how to make an extra copy of a drive, whose operating system is questionable as to its licensing for your use.  They really in my humble opinion should have just helped you reinstall your 10.4 system if anything when you went to the store.
