CONFIG_DRM=y as default - why?

By default, the drm module is compiled into the kernel... Why is this? It means that you have to recompile the kernel if you want to install a newer version of DRI. It would be better to compile it in as a module - that way, it could be used without a separate installation of DRI (for people with well-supported video hardware), or could be replaced with a newer version (for people with less well supported hardware).

Seems that the current kernel (2.6.12) has DRM compiled as module

  • Nokia 6300 Ringtone Increases by default, why?

about 5 seconds in it increases quite a bit, sounds really tacky innit..... thinking about selling it because it **bleep** my off so much.... like, can you make a phone that just plays the ringtone please? thanks

This feature started from 2005 with the 6230i. In some ways it's not bad because sometimes sudden noise can frighten you and we all know the disadvantages fright can cause.
And as ZACPERSON said, it doesn't take long to get louder so it's not a problem.
Some of you people seem surprised and wonder what's going on with your phone why it doesn't ring at full volume on the first ring. Don't you people read your manual ??? I read my Nokia 6300 manual and it says when the ring volume is set to the maximum, it will reach the maximum volume after a few seconds.

  • Search settings - default to current folder and "file name" ?

99.9% of the time, when I enter something in the search bar of the Finder window, what I want to do is:
    1. search is the folder that I'm in
    2. search for the "file name", and
    3. then sort the results by "date modified".
    Currently, problem is:
    1. I can only change the search area (which defalts to "This Mac") after the search has begun.
    2. Likewise, the default is "content"
    3. There's not even an OPTION for "date modified". The "Last Opened" option is rarely useful.
    Please help!
    Thanks

The only one who can help us is Apple. Obviously you find this just as ridiculous as everyone else does who actually uses their computer to do things.
While I usually think this kind of sweeping generalization is unjustified, here I do not. Spotlight has great potential, but "ridiculous" describes the implementation perfectly. I'm not terribly upset by the default to search "This Mac" -- it really isn't much of a hassle to have to click the folder button -- but the loss of the ability to choose any folder or group of folders is exactly the kind of "regressive functionality" that should have people flooding feedback with complaints.
Just as ridiculous is the inability to show & sort on any of the metadata columns a normal Finder window offers. And if "Last Opened" is so useful in searches that it is the (unchangeable) default, why isn't it available in any other Finder view?
Plus, does anybody really understand how the "File Name" option works? It rarely seems to make a difference -- I often enter a search phrase, look at the results, then switch to the File Name option & still see files that clearly do not have the search phrase or any part of it in their names.
More: Try a search on Kind "Other" & enter the "Kind" info from a file's Get Info Box. Try "Application (Classic)" & note that it finds any you might have. But try "Application (Universal)" or "Application (PowerPC)" & you get ... nothing. Try just "Application (" & you get all apps. Try "Classic" & once again, any Classic apps show up, but try "Universal" or "PowerPC" & you get nothing. It's the same with many other file kinds -- sometimes the "Get Info" file kind string or some part of it works, sometimes not. Worse, the same is true for the "Kind" info taken directly from Finder windows. Try entering "Plain Text" in the Kind-Other search. I have hundreds of these but the search turns up exactly one, & it isn't even in my Documents folder.
(Before anybody suggests it, yes I have rebuilt the Spotlight index repeatedly, using both the Privacy pane method & Terminal commands, & it makes no difference.)
The point is not to rant but to demonstrate how poorly thought out & unreliable the app remains. I feel the problems are so obvious & widespread that we should not have to use the feedback page to tell Apple about them, but apparently we do. It really is as if it was designed by people that don't have a clue about what a search engine should do or how to integrate it into a user friendly environment.

  • Why doesn't my backup drive appear in the Startup Disk selection window?

I've been using SuperDuper! to backup my Mac HD to my internal Seagate drive. The Seagate is divided into Seagate1 and Seagate2. I backup to Seagate1. When I open the Startup Disk window from Preferences, only the Mac HD icon appears, highlighted, and a Network Startup icon. Seagate1 does not appear, although I've made it bootable while using SuperDuper!
I'm not on a network, as I'm the sole user of my computer at home. I am connected to the Internet via cable, but that shouldn't be a factor, I think. I don't know why the Network icon is there but Seagate1 but Seagate1 isn't.
Is there a way to make it so the Seagate1 icon appears in the Startup Disk window? As it stands if my Mac HD goes down, I won't have access to Seagate1 to boot the computer.
Would much appreciate any advice or referral to another source that could help me.

Something I learned re: partitioning w/ Disk Utility: Dave Nanian at SD! referred me to SD!'s FAQs, the 1st one dealing with my problem:
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5738
I told (email) him that the original partitions already showed APM, but I went ahead, anyway, following instr's in the FAQ. Notable in those instr's is to click on Options, which I may have overlooked originally. This time, when I clicked on Options, APM showed as the default in the window. I went ahead & proceeded, thinking, "Well, if APM is the default, why did I need to click on Options"?
So I raised the issue with Dave. Here's what he said: "Alas, no - it uses the existing scheme, which was likely MBR."
Lesson: When partitioning w/ DU, ALWAYS click on Options, even if APM is the default. I know DU directs this, but all I can think of why the original partitioning failed is that I did not do this. Any comments would be welcome.

  • Zeroed Defaults vs. Zeroed RAW File?

It occurs to me that, while the new 0 values are a welcome change for the defaults (more intuitive than what appeared arbitray before), there is a limitation: how do I display a zeroed, uncorrected RAW file?  The LR4 zero'ing would appear to be similar to the previous LR defaults (allowing for changes in the process version), just with a more logical starting point; there is still an inherent adjustment, no?  But what if I want to start at the flat RAW file.  This would include contrast adjustments at the tonal curve (is the new linear the old medium?).

    MadManChan2000 wrote:
My claim is that an image that looks pretty good to your eyes is the right starting point.
But one has to know why that image looks "pretty good". If one does not and is not able to get it too look really good then the reason could be that one is not aware about the fact that the starting point already contained some edits that one would not have made this way initially.
This issue obviously becomes worse, if the starting point is adaptive, i.e., if LR4 choses some initial settings depending on the image (-> e.g., auto black point). Then undoing those initial adjustments becomes even harder.
Earlier you wrote "I don't think there's anything special or magical about the unrendered scene-referred state, from the point of view of adjusting an image." With all due respect, but that does not mean that others would not benefit from being able to start from a truly clean slate. Of course an image rendered with truly neutral develop settings will look bad. But one then knows which adjustments are required, because one isn't fooled by some unknown default adjustments which in the worst case are even depending on the individual image. One then does not waste time trying to make the image look good by going a wrong route. One does not waste time by trying to find the true neutral starting point, i.e., undoing the auto/implicit adjustments without any way of knowing what they were and with what intensity they have been applied.
On the one hand I can see how the new approach is meant to be helpful. On the other hand, I'm strongly arguing for making it possible for power users to disable any auto adjustments and see what is actually happening rather than be given an oversimplified picture (e.g., be shown a "linear" curve where the real curve is anything but linear).
If no default settings work for every user, why not use a truly neutral default? It will work for a subset, just as any other. You'll get the "My image previews change from 'great' to 'flat' looking during imports" comment with non-neutral defaults anyhow. You can make canned non-neutral defaults available, but let users see in what way they are not neutral, i.e., show a "medium contrast" curve instead of (implicitly) pretending there is no adjustment to the tone curve.
Finally, if the initial motivation was alignment with JPG defaults, why not make the JPG defaults non-zero? If you must lie to the user about setting values, why not give the RAW shooters the true picture ("zero" means zero) and the JPG shooters the lie? This way, the lie wouldn't be as bad because a JPG will have some adjustments baked in. They will not correspond to the non-zero default values LR would be showing but at least there would be some correspondence. I personally would prefer to let "zero" mean "zero" everywhere and would not care that JPG defaults are different to RAW defaults, but if you must lie, I reckon the JPG shooters would mind less.

  • Bridge buggy opening file in photoshop CS3

I have totally uninstalled (removing every bit!), re-installed, deleted prefs ad nauseum. If I start CS3 from the application icon (yes it is still in the default folder where I installed it *again* yesterday) all is well. If I try to open a photo from Bridge by right clicking I get two choices: open in Photoshop 10.0.1, or open in Photoshop 10.0.1 (default)
Why does the right click on either choice open a buggy problem? First I'm told the application moved (it didn't and deleting the prefs didn't help) then, whether I chose repair or not, it opens but tells me that all my filters didn't load and it lines my menu bar with at least a half dozen "onOne" menus. Then when I close I get the message that it quit unexpectedly.
I just had to go through a long process (thank you Adobe for the knowledge base!) getting my license to work again. Now I find there is some kind of communication problem between Bridge and CS3.
Maybe that's why Adobe stopped supporting older versions. The program has gotten too big and buggy?
If I drag the file from Bridge to the opened Photoshop (from the application folder) it opens perfectly. Since I have a work around, this isn't crucial, but I really wonder if anyone can explain the communication bug? Not much chance I'll spend the money for an upgrade to CS4. Especially since support will stop as soon as CS5 comes out. CS3 is buggy enough for me.

Anne, with all respect, I differ with you. It's easy to blame the user when problems happen. I happen to be paranoid about maintaining my computer and so far, after switching to my Mac, it is mainly Adobe programs that cause problems, no matter how careful I am. Of course I might avoid problems by never installing useful plugins (and sometimes it is the plugin that causes a problem). Possibly my installation of the OnOne plugins (I really love these) caused this problem with Bridge.
Computers are almost essential; for me one main enjoyment in life is working with my photos. I usually can figure out my problems on my own --learned to do that when I was running Windose :-) but in all fairness there are quirks and bugs that are NOT the user's doing. I figure if I'm not having problems it's luck as well as being careful.
Hoping you won't take offense. The few times I have visited the forums you have been kind and helpful.
Ramón, I will be checking out the Bridge forums from now on. This discussion has probably run it's course. Thank you again.

  • Operational Issues vs Operator Error

The concept of the Android operational system got many rave reviews, and many positive comments regarding the many things an android phone can achieve.  However,  as a functionally smartphone to use in business to organize, file and utilize contacts, it falls short in the performance department.  Many of the primarily functions as a smart phone of the Droid X falls short and at this time after nearly four months and 4 droid's, the solution appears far in the distance.
I am presently using my 4th Motorola Droid X, which all the 3 previous models were deemed defective by Motorola & Verizon Tech's.  I find it interesting that it appears that despite numerous telephone calls for help & assistance, that I am told by both Motorola & Verizon support that the following concerns do not show as problems with the Droid X.  After spending over 7 hours with a Level 3 directed Motorola Tech, after spending hours with a Verizon Tech, that "there are more people having issues with the DROIDX than I want to know."  this was told to me after I inquired that I just couldn't be the only user to file concerns about the product.   So I ask you try to see if you experience any of the listed problems below and please respond.  This is the only way we are going to get both Verizon or Motorola to take immediate action.
Don't believe me... Get out your DROID X now and try the following:
    1. Why when selecting either a phone number, address or email as "DEFAULT", absolutely nothing is displayed to indicate that a default was set?
SOLUTION:  Upon selecting either a phone number, address or email as DEFAULT, why not have the entire entry change color to GREEN.  (keep in mind those that might be color blind).  Green is the color that means go, first, and is most easily viewed immediately.
    2. Why when selecting a contact to edit does information appear in different order in "edit" screen that in the "contact data screen.?
SOLUTION:  Programmers you need to fix this discrepancy.  It is too confusing when trying to compare data.
    3. Why does the data also appear differently in different order when comparing information to that which is displayed on google.account?
SOLUTION:  See answer to number 2.
    4. Why when conducting searches in which many of the contacts have similar names (like "Marina") that the search will not list all of the contacts matching criteria requested in search?
SOLUTION:  Correct search criteria to examine all data fields and to ensure multiple entries in each field is identified by the search feature.
NOTE: it would be nice that when search results are listed that user have the option to see requested search first rather than all other contacts that have matching criteria.  Example.  if searching for Marina,  if typing Ma...  as the letters are typed only list those matches that the MA is matching as the first two characters FIRST rather than every match that contains the letters MA.
But still problem remains that the search criteria leaves out contacts that have the exact match requested criteria.
    5.  Why have the ability  to create groups if groups will not sync  between the phone and gmail?
SOLUTION:  Programmers need to investigate and determine why when creating groups on the phone or on gmail do not sync.   If the phone is designed to be a phone to work with the google /gmail features, then perhaps all of the features should be tested... or make a disclosure prior to sale of functions that do not work.
    6. Does this Droid X, have the ability to work as designed with more than one gmail contact?  IF YES, then how is a particular gmail account linked to a contact?  Can this contact gmail link be changed or linked to more than one email without having to retype contact data?  There appears to be no method in which to select a gmail in which to link a contact?
SOLUTION:  enable feature to select which account to link a contact.   Also, enable ability to select multiple links and/or ability to switch links.
    7. What causes differences in total number of contacts on the phone than that listed in the gmail account?  Phone constantly shows fewer contacts than the gmail account,  in my case, there are (402) missing contacts on the phone?
SOLUTION:  There should be mathematical check to ensure contacts match both phone and gmail account and an error message when the count differs.   NOTE: is there a problem not disclosed regarding an OUTLOOK C.V. file not syncing with a google account data?
    8. Constantly getting message:  SORRY, The application Google Services Framework (process com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.   FORCE CLOSE.   Why? What is constantly not working?
NOTE: This problem appears, often several times, then is followed by phone resetting itself.
SOLUTION:  BE PRO ACTIVE IN NOTIFYING CUSTOMERS USING EQUIPMENT OF ISSUES DEEMED NECESSARY TO BE ADDRESSED IN SOFTWARE FIX.  IN FACT, WHY NOT AN APPLICATION THAT IDENTIFYS ALL ISSUES WITH ANTICIPATED STATUS ON WHEN CORRECTIONS WILL BE FORTHCOMING.
I  have spent the past 4 months extensively trying to work with Verizon and Motorola.  Verizon wants to blame Motorola and takes no responsibility for its beta team to find at least the above issues.  If they did find issues and know these issues prior to releasing the equipment for user usage, I believe Verizon owes every consumer a disclosure of known problems in advance.  Many of the above issues are so obvious it is impossible to believe these issues were not noted as problems prior to release.  I hold Verizon accountable for my data loss, the wasted time spent explaining over and over the problems, and I hold them accountable for failure to test the accessories prior to sale.
The DROIDX can be a great smartphone if it uses smart beta testers and if at the least the above issues can be resolved quickly.
    What is your opinion?

The Default selected number moves to top of phone list for the contact and this is how you know it’s the default.
    2. Why when selecting a contact to edit does information appear in different order in "edit" screen that in the "contact data screen.?
    Same answer as previous question.
    3. Why does the data also appear differently in different order when comparing information to that which is displayed on google.account?
Because the site has cells configured by category where the phone has order configured by user input.
    4. Why when conducting searches in which many of the contacts have similar names (like "Marina") that the search will not list all of the contacts matching criteria requested in search?
I am unsure how you are searching but when I do a search all matches are listed from search criteria, Google search does this automatically but when you do it from phone dialer you have to press the arrow in left corner above input cell to display all found items that match search.
    5. Why have the ability to create groups if groups will not sync between the phone and gmail?
Now this option I can agree needs some work but nothing is perfect
    6. Does this Droid X, have the ability to work as designed with more than one gmail contact? IF YES, then how is a particular gmail account linked to a contact? I do not know why you would want to have two accounts that would have the same exact information like contacts because the device pulls contacts from the phone book listing… But if you want to do this Google has a option from website to merge two accounts and I believe this should do just what you are wanting.
    7. What causes differences in total number of contacts on the phone than that listed in the gmail account? Phone constantly shows fewer contacts than the gmail account, in my case, there are (402) missing contacts on the phone?
This can happen because on counts the number of numbers listed instead of the number of contacts, so if you have 4 numbers for a contact this will list a 4 in one area but only one in other location… I do agree that this is something that can make things a bit confusing at times.
    8. Constantly getting message: SORRY, The application Google Services Framework (process com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. FORCE CLOSE. Why? What is constantly not working?
This is most likely a incompatible app installed that it causing this controller to FC but I can not trouble shoot this issue because I haven't experience this problem myself.
The DROIDX can be a great smartphone if it uses smart beta testers and if at the least the above issues can be resolved quickly.
Beta testers can not take all users habits and installed softwares in consideration because there is to many new apps created daily and to many custom configurations done by so many users. I have developed a number of 3rd party apps for WM over the years and I can openly say that the chance of isolating all possible configuration issues is impossible, the SDK only allow you limited access to the systems base codes that makes a true custom code to overlay a UI a little complex.
    What is your opinion?
Hope this cleared some things for you.

Thank you for your reply from the Droid (1) point of view.  However, the issues I have addressed are regarding the DROID X model only.  I am sure there are more issues that I have not discovered, but I am confident that these problems are NOT caused by operator error.  I look forward to any comments from those of you using the DROID X.  Let me know if you find any other problems.  OH.  Has anyone purchased the Navigational/Music Vehicle Mount by Motorola for the DROID X?  Has anyone found a "CASE" that allows you to use the Mount with the case still on the DROID X?  Motorola states that they do not make a case.  I wonder just how the prototype was developed with out an actual case to create the mount?  Sounds like possible class action material.  Build, Sell an accessory that can't support the accessory as advertised?

  • Abandoned Lightroom 1.0 - my list of critical showstoppers

I have seen several recent examples of users venting on this forum but sadly, I have to symphatise as in my own experience the quality of the Lightroom 1.0 release, specifically the library module does in fact justify this level of frustration.
I was looking forward to Lightroom becoming the new gold standard and the app that I would spend days and nights in when I was not out shooting. As it is I have abandoned my trial with Lightroom after three days. I never got past the Library module (and since Ligthroom can't function without a library that sealed it's fate).
    The stability showstoppers:
    - Importing with generating previews always crashed after few thousand images, no option to generate 1:1 previews during import completely baffling*
    - Importing without generating previews would randomly not import some of the images, deleting the library and starting again would cause a DIFFERENT set of images to be randomly not imported - no reason given, the images that could not be imported could be opened just fine in Camera Raw and Bridge would happily generate previews for them
    - Generating previews after importing always crashed after a few thousand images
    - Frequent out of memory errors
That's just the MAJOR stability issues. Then there is performance (I have about 30,000 images, not that I could ever import all of them into Lightroom...)
And then there are the functional showstoppers:
    - I will absolutely NOT trust Adobe with my images or my metadata (not after the fiasco with Bridge corruping it's caches in EVERY release to date or the issues with files that were renamed on import getting corrupted, and an application that comes with a built in tool to check for library corruption doesn't exactly inspire confidence either) so I import in place and want all of my metadata to be stored in *.xmp files. BUT WHY OH WHY does generating previews cause Lightroom to write out an *.xmp file for every file it generated a preview for!?! Even Bridge was smart enough to only write out *.xmp files when I actually did something to the image!
    - Since there is no way to disable 'folder aggregation', the folders view is usessless for trying to organize images. Try this, take a folder with 1000 images, create three subfolders and try to organize the images into subfolders. Every time you click on the parent folder you see all 1000 images. You have no idea which ones you've already moved and which are still in the parent.
    - Why can't renaming 'files' just rename the files in the file system!?! Since Lightroom is NOT a browser it MUST NOT force me to organize / rename my images outside of it since it then looses track of the files.
Yes, I have logged all of these issues with Adobe. Have I heard anything from Adobe? No. Lightroom has been out for FOUR months. Given all of the stability problems that have been widely reported you would expect that a company that is in touch with it's users would in fact react and put out a couple dot-dot releases (1.0.1, 1.0.2) to address the stability showstoppers. That would at least enable them to get a feel if they're in fact addressing the most severe issues that their user base is experiencing. But no they chose to put their heads in the sand and pretend the users are happy and continue working on adding new functionality. Here is what's going to happen. They'll release 1.1 and half my showstoppers will still be there. And who knows how long we'll have to wait before the next release comes out.
*Yes, I am aware how much disk space 1:1 previews would use but I don't care, I have a 30" screen and I have no problem throwing disk space, cpu power or machine time at the problem but I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to waste my own time waiting for Lightroom to perform processing 'on the fly' that could have been performed in bulk while I sleep.

    Lee,
With all due respect, I think that you're still missing my point and in doing so I believe you're making my case stronger! The disclaimer is that I don't apply any metadata to the image during importing (my camera already embedded my name in every raw file and keywording at this point doesn't make sense in my workflow).
The application of defaults is EXACTLY why I don't want the *.xmp files written out until 'I' have manually modified the image in some way. Applying the tone curve is great example. So today Lightroom applies a medium curve. Maybe tomorrow version 1.1 is going to get smarter and apply different curves depending on the contrast of the image (or some other default behavior will change, like what happend to the Shadows slider in Bridge 1.x, it used to default to 0, now it defaults to 5). But then we have the question of compatibility! Which images should it apply the new smarter defaults to? The natural choice is: images that the user modified should stay the same, new images and those that have not been modified in any way should automatically benefit from the new defaults. Comitting to defaults at the time of importing seems completely unnecessary. If they're defaults, why write them out at ALL? I wouldn't mind as much if the *.xmp files were 'empty' so to speak. But if I recall correctly, the're not, they include all the ACR settings at 'current' default level as if I manually set them.
As for 'What's the point of importing your images into the LR database if this is the case?'. I never said I like it using a database but I appreciate the pros and cons of this approach. I would use Bridge instead but it has a different showstopper: the generated previews are too low quality to judge image sharpness (see BreezeBrowser in High Quality mode for what a preview should look like, I posted about this in the Bridge forum recently). The low quality previews are THE reason I am looking at Lightroom but of course it also promises to be 'so much more' than Bridge.
Of all the issues that I consider to be showstoppers in the library module of Lightroom 1.0 this is the least important and I will agree to disagree with you. If 1.1 fixes the stability issues, improves performance and delivers a usable interface for managing files and folders that keeps them consistent with the file system I'll be happy to give Lightroom another shot even if it means *.xmp files being generated for every image as it's imported.
