Config Files Backup to Avoid Interface Bug

I have recently upgraded to Adobe Creative Suite Master
Collection. Although I am impressed with the collection for the
most part, I can't believe that Adobe has not addressed a glaring
bug in the user interface that will contsantly corrupt the sites
list and configuration files.
The bug stems from having a large website portfolio. As a web
designer, as well as a webmaster, I have just finished configuring
most of the sites and directories I need immediate access to.
Dreamweaver CS3 could not import the previous site list and
configuration because of the interface bug which is constantly
corrupting that file. What happens, is that I select the website to
work on (say, dnsite.com) from the drop down list, and am satisied
that I am there. Unfortunately, my attention is diverted or I
simply forget to click somewhere else in the window. If I would
click somewhere else in the window, things would be fine. But that
fact that I need to is a true interface bug, because when I don't
click somewhere else (for whatever reason), I look at my list of
files and immediately start to scroll down through the file list to
get to the file I want to work on, BY USING THE MOUSE WHEEL, like I
always do. However, because I have not clicked outside of that
original site list drop down box, that site list selector scrolls.
The result is that Dw loads and scans each site over and over until
it comes to the end of the list, OR CORRUPTS THE SITE LIST AND
CONFIG FILE. This happens all the time with me, and it is extremely
infuriating. In order to combat this interface design bug, and Dw's
inability to protect its own configuration files by handling them
correctly, or even producing a backup file that it can revert to in
the event that it has corrupted that last site list and config
file, this interface bug has forced me to manually backup the site
list and config file. But apparently, this file has moved since
Dreamweaver 2004 MX?
By the way, it would be simple to fix this bug with a simple
pop-up dialogue window that would disappear once the correct site
was selected (duh... I thought that Adobe's noted interface design
excellence would have fixed this strange idiotic flaw immediately,
but I see they haven't addresses anything us web designers want or
need). I know Macromedia was working on the interface, but they
never did get it right and I was expecting BIG improvements from
Adobe RIGHT AWAY (because they are so good at it and Macromedia was
so poor at UI design).
Because of this this bug, and because I just configured over
60 websites that I need to maintain immediate access to, I need to
backup my website list and configuration file, but I see that it
has changed or moved. It used to be in the application data folder
in the folder up one directory from the My Documents for my
username on the computer, but I can't find it anymore. I checked
All Users as well. Where has this file gone, and what is it named,
now?
By the way, as a default, you would be saving me and other
web designers a great deal of time (re)configuring my list of sites
if you would have included .psd .ai and .eps as file extensions to
cloak. Macromedia didn't do this because they didn't want to
promote you, but you own this software now, update it.
So little thought has gone into this update that I am truly
dissapointed. Dw used to improve with each update. You can't tell
me anyone is happy with it and keep a straight face.

Not what you'll want to hear probably- but the site list
scrolls again
because the site list drop down is what has focus. It has
focus until you
click something else. That's the GUI behavior i would expect
instead of a
warning dialog box getting in the way.
click in the files panel if you want to scroll the list of

• BUG: CS6 Custom Shortcuts config file UTF8 entity encoding

When saving custom shortcuts with this "Cmd+<" or "Cmd+Opt+<" Photoshop saves it. I can Use it. Everything Work.
After restarting photoshop, shortcuts not work. Only these two, other work fine.
This is shortcut after photoshop restarting. (where is: "Cmd+<" or "Cmd+Opt+<")
Probably there is bug in UTF8 entity parsing from shortcuts config.
It cant read entities. But can save them.
This is in confign file
Using CDATA or replacing "<" entity by ">". In both cases photoshop returns error in conf file.

Backups of the jvm.config file are created when you hit the submit button. You can use this backup to restore from a critical change.

• An issue (bug?) with Config File VIs?!

Hello to all!
When using Config File VIs I encountered a very interesting
and killing (me) issue.
I spent an hour before I knew where's a bug.
(Maybe because I'm a novice to LabView).
From one side, the bug was mine: I used a "for loop" to write string values to keys in section and provided to the loop an array that could be empty sometimes. And I absolutely forgot that "for loop" executes at least one time anyway even if array is empty.
Ok, no problem, then the function "Write Key" should say "ERROR" and I would find my bug at once on the output of my "for loop".
BUT IT DOESN'T DO IT. It says "OK".
And only the next function "write key (string value in my case)"
fails saying "Error: Config Data Registry.vi [get data]: invalid object 0". I certainly think that something wrong with this "write key", but what means this message?!
Ok, I found who responds for this (the previous "write key" in for loop).
But the most interesting thing is that if you set after this bad "for loop" one more such "for loop" you don't get error on the output of the 2nd "for loop" too. It appears only after "write key" that goes after 2nd "for loop".
Well, forget it. Just look at attached files.
Something wrong in this "Write Key" function if error goes far beyond its real source of arrising.
Are you agreed? Or maybe I'm wrong?
Thanks to all for attention.
Any comments appreciated.

Hi Ben, this was a good hint, last time I had problems with that zero iteration issue, I worked with LV 6.1 and kept in mind, that the shift register output was the last value stored in the Shift register output node, it reminded to the use of an uninitialized SR. If somebody still has 6.1 on the machine, it would be nice to test this. But the test with 7.1 showed you are right, the SR- input is reached through. Great!
Thanks, dave

• Reload config file bug to be mindful of self assigned IP address

I did a an export of the config of my 4 routers, then reset them all to factory defaults, then reloaded all the config files.
All the outlying routers were non connectable and had yellow flashing lights. I connected to each manually with an ethernet cable and laptop and found that each had a self assigned IP address.
I went back to the main router and found that the check mark to allow the network to be extended did not re-check during the config file restore. Once I manually checked the box, all the routers automatically came on line.

Hi mpedruski, and a warm welcome to the forums!
The "self-assigned IP address" simply means that it is not getting a reply from anything like a Router handing out DHCP IPs.
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
Might pay to make a New Location for each...

• LV 8.2 Config File with Enum bug

Please refer to attachment.
Set the Enum and run the VI. The Enum is converted into string and then saved into a config file.
The file is immediately read and the key is converted back to enum.
It works fine until you choose index 32 in the enum. Either the Write Key or the Read Key fails to encode/decode enum index 32 correctly.

• JDeveloper 11.1.2.0.0 Version Application wizard : File Backup Error

hi
As shown in the scenario (sc1) screencast at http://screencast.com/t/GA7OcgYZ
the JDeveloper 11.1.2.0.0 Version Application wizard can fail sometimes, showing a "File Backup Error" dialog, with the message
"Failed attempting to back up imported resource
D:\screencast\VersionAppLockedIssueApp-v0.01\VersionAppLockedIssueApp\Model.
Check that there are no file system explorers viewing files in this location and that none of the files are open in other applications before resuming."
This even occurs when there are no other processes (like Windows Explorer or an editor) using/locking the file.
It should be possible to reproduce the behaviour using the example application
at http://www.consideringred.com/files/oracle/2011/VersionAppLockedIssueApp-v0.01.zip
which is really nothing special I think, so it might also reproduce using another application.
First open the application and also open the file "browseEmployees.jsf" in design view.
After that, as it seems, the Version Application wizard fails.
Note that it might be relevant that I am using Windows 7, as I can imagine that this could behave differently when using JDeveloper on other operating systems.
Also note, if I try to ZIP the application folder (instead of using the Version Application wizard) after opening the file "browseEmployees.jsf" in design view, I get a message like "WARNING: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
: D:\screencast\VersionAppLockedIssueApp-v0.01\VersionAppLockedIssueApp\.data\00000000\je.lck ",
as can be seen in the scenario (sc2) screencast at http://screencast.com/t/rFiL47Bil
As it seems that the Version Application wizard has managed to commit the source files, one workaround could be to checkout the source in another location and continue working there.
Other suggestions to avoid this issue, or deal with it, are welcome.
questions:
- (q1) Can this "File Backup Error" behaviour for the Version Application wizard be reproduced?
- (q2) How can this "File Backup Error" behaviour for the Version Application wizard be explained?
many thanks
Jan Vervecken

fyi
Today I noticed that there is a My Oracle Support note about this:
- note id 1353389.1 , "In JDeveloper11.1.2.0.0 the Version Application Wizard Failed with the Error: File Backup Error "
Its "Solution" section currently says:
"The problem is still investigated by development.
But there is a possible workaround for Bug 12912410 by unchecking the checkbox 'Perform Checkout' in step 5 of 6 in the wizard screen. "

• Loading UI components from config file

Hi,
I wanted to know your opinion about a project that i'm working on.
The inicial idea of the project is to have a config file (file.ini) with a syntax similar to this one:
[Component1]
type = sevenseg
width = 200
height = 50
numberOfDigits = 5
foregroundColor = green
backgroundColor = grey
[Component2]
type = button
width = 50
height = 20
command = GETLED 3
[Window]
width = 500
height = 300The application needs to read the file when it starts and after that, it needs to build the interface based in the config file. I think this is the easy part.
The most difficult part is that i also want the application polling a webserver for data in order to refresh the values displayed in the components and also, when there is some input action (clicking a button, changing a slider, etc) i want to send it to the server.
The problem is that I'm not imagining a way of linking the various components that will be in the UI while using this config file.
Do you have any ideas or do you think this can be done?
The purpose of reading the "UI" from the config file was to reduce the writing of code, since this application will be used by people with little skills in programming.
And in the future, it could be possible of creating an application to create all the UIs needed in a way similar to netbeans and swing based UI.
Thanks for your attention.
João Gonçalves
PS: If this isn't possible, I'm also considering the possibility of creating a netbeans plugin to design the UI. Here I don't avoid the coding problem, but i can reduce it a bit.

Well, I'm going to try to explain it a bit better.
The application that i'm going to do is the interface and it's going to be done in javafx, (obviously).
The application will be the user interface of a remote device that will be located somewhere in a LAN. The webserver is located in the middle, between the client (UI) and the device, and is the webserver that it's going to make the bridge between the client and the device.
The architecture will be something like this:
Client <------> WebServer <------> device
The idea of the project is to make it possible to use a large number of devices, all different. So the UI that is going to control each device will need to be customized in order to look similar to the control panel of the device and to permit the user to interact with this one like if he was in front of it.
The reason of my question is because it was asked to me if it was possible to create a config file and load the UI components and layout from the file, to avoid dealing with the code, since the persons who are going to configure the devices are not software developers and don't know too much about java and programming.
This is why i made this post, to know the opinion of people more experienced than I in programming, and above all, in javafx.

• Arch trashes config files in /etc?

Hi everyone, I just installed Arch today in a virtual machine to get a feel for it (trying to get away from the grind of Gentoo), and ran into the first obstacle...
I installed joe with "pacman -S joe", then I edited /etc/joe/joerc. That's when it occurred to me to check how Arch handles config file upgrades, so I just reinstalled joe with the same command, and to my amazement, all modifications from /etc/joe/joerc were gone and there was no backup in sight. Pacman simply overwrote the files in /etc/joe.
I was perusing the Wiki while downloading the CD image and the information there suggested that Pacman would save a backup copy of the previous config file, instead of just blindly overwriting. So, am I doing anything wrong? Does it put the backups in some different directory? Or is this feature not yet implemented? I'm really stuck on this, any help would be really appreciated.
If it helps, the CD version I downloaded is Archlinux-i686-2007.05-Duke-Linuxtag2007.current.iso, also during installation I selected only the "base" package set, and after installation I pointed the "current" repository in /etc/pacman.conf to the CD, so I could try out package management without waiting for packages to download.
P.S. The forum registration form is a bit broken, when it checks if you are a bot by asking the name of the distribution, it refused the answer "Arch Linux" and called me a bot. I obviously got past it, but still, it should accept "Arch Linux" because that is the name on the main web page and in the titles of all sub pages.

Oh, I see. You are right, the backup files section is empty, thanks.
This presents few more questions:
1) In your experience, are the packages in Arch generally sloppy like this when it comes to handling config files, or was this just bad luck to have a rare bug in my first ever installed Arch package?
2) Isn't this kind of handling of config files fragile? It would really suck to be toiling all night over some complex config file, only to have your hard work blown away on next upgrade because the packager made a typo in the list of backup files.
3) Would it be better to have a global option somewhere to specify whole directory trees as protected user-edited config files, instead of each package trying (and sometimes failing, obviously) to specify everything? Can you specify whole of /etc/* with the NoUpgrade option you mentioned, instead of each file one by one?

• Jabber for windows 9.2.1 - InitialPhoneSelection doesn't work if configuration is in custom config file

Hi,
my customer wanted set InitialPhoneSelection to deskphone mode, when users firs run Jabber for Windows (ver. 9.2.1).
I created custom config (configurationfile=jabber-config-deskphone.xml) but it doesn't work.
Policies>
<InitialPhoneSelection>deskphone</InitialPhoneSelection>
</Policies>
I tested it couple times and at the end I tried put configuration to default jabber-config.xml and ... this functionality start working...
Could you check guys if you have same problem with custom config file? I think that it is bug. Maybe other option don't work in custom config file.
Thanks a lot
Pavel

Hi Pavel,
This setting is only when the client is installed and started by the user for the first time. After that the client will save the user preference (what was the phone selection when the user exited the client) and use it in subsequent logins.
Having said that, can you please specify in details how exactly you did your tests or maybe test again taking the above into consideration ?
Thanks,
Christos

• Replacing Time Capsule - can I save my old config file to use with new one?

I have a Time Capsule backing up 3 of my Macs. A couple of nights ago, I started receiving the following: "sparsebundle” could not be created error 22
on all 3 Macs.Time Machine application fails due to this error and if I access the Time Machine in Finder, I can see the 3 volumes but cannot go any deeper. I get the same sparsebundle error.
A few minutes ago, my wife called me stating that her MBP gave her a backup error stating that the backup Volume name changed, continue or don't backup. Something weird is obviously going on. I also noticed that the TM fan was kicked up into high gear. I'm suspecting a hardware failure of some sort.
Thoughts?
If I do need to replace my TC, is there a way to save the config file from my old one and import/use it on a new TC if I have to purchase one? Would save me from entering a lot of wireless access devices since I use MAC filtering.

Yes you can easily import/export settings ( I have 6 base stations so do this quite a lot - in fact I always export the configs as a backup anyway)
As to your TC can you connect it locally and run Disk Utils to see if it need some repairs?

• WebLogic Server 10.3.4 external config files

Hey,
i have a question. I have external configuration files, and i dont know where to place, or better how to add the path where the configurations files located to WebLogic Servers classpath ?
I worked with JBOSS and there i added some lines in the start script. In glassfish there i can make it via administration gui.
The files are *.cfg files and the error output is this:
PATH_INSTANCIA:
log4j:ERROR Could not read configuration file [nullCONFIG.cfg].
java.io.FileNotFoundException: nullCONFIG.cfg (No such file or directory)
Thanks in advance :)

Hi Jack,
You will have to add the folder where the config file is present to the WLS classpath. Modify the CLASSPATH in setDomainEnv.cmd/setDomainEnv.sh (Take a backup of these files - just in case :) ) to include the config file folder path.
And restart the server and WLS should be able to pick the file.
In your code you can have the line as follows
Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().getResource("filename")As you have already added the folder to the classpath, it will be able to get the reference to the file.
Thanks,
Patrick

• Problem with Virtual Hosts Individual Config Files and OSX 10.7 Lion (AllowOverride Setting)

I am hoping some other Xserve users running OSX 10.7 (Lion) can offer some additional input or help in a couple of issues I am running into with the Apache settings on my server.
Below is an example site config file on our server. We are hosting a number of sites and are using .htaccess files and apache's rewrite module to create vanity URLs. In order for the .htaccess files to be used AllowOverride has to be set to "All" instead of "None"
The problem I am running into is everytime I stop and restart the web service on the machine it keeps changing this setting back in the individual site configuration files. I will change it to AllowOverride All and next time the server has to be restarted or the web service has to be restarted it is defaulting every site back to None which has become quite frustrating.
Is there somewhere I can set this default setting to prevent this from occuring and forcing every site and site config to default to "AllowOverride All" ?
Should I be researching this somewhere specific? OSX 10.7 changed the entire Apache Interface and the manner in which it runs and I am finding little to no documentation on it.

Are you using the default Server.app, or have you downloaded and installed the (proper) Server Admin tools?
Server Admin.app isn't included as part of the Lion Server distribution, but if you download it and install it you get the same set of admin tools as you're used to with previous versions. From there you should be able to set the 'Allow All Overrides' setting for your site.

• Remove packages and all the config files associated with it

How can I remove a package and all the files folders hidden folders config files and examples which are installed with it.
In short how can I revert the system back to the state when the package was not even there.
When i remove a package i still see some folders which are associated with it in some weird directories.
Is there a way to get rid of those.
Thanks

From the pacman man page:
Remove Options
-c, --cascade
Remove all target packages, as well as all packages that depend on one or more target packages. This operation is recursive, and must be used with care since it can remove many potentially needed packages.
-k, --keep
Removes the database entry only. Leaves all files in place.
-n, --nosave
Instructs pacman to ignore file backup designations. Normally, when a file is removed from the system the database is checked to see if the file should be renamed with a ".pacsave" extension.
-s, --recursive
Remove each target specified including all of their dependencies, provided that (A) they are not required by other packages; and (B) they were not explicitly installed by the user. This operation is recursive and analogous to a backwards --sync operation, and helps keep a clean system without orphans.
-n seems to be what you are looking for.

• User Interface bug when renaming tracks in list views

When renaming tracks in the list views, there is a user interface bug that makes it impossible to see what you're doing. When you select a track in the list view, this is what it looks like:
Note how the text is white on the darker blue background. When you click again, to open the inline text editor to rename, this is what you get:
The background color of the text editor is white, just like the text, so when you type, you can't see what you're typing, nor can you see where in the original text your text insertion cursor is located.
Thanks!
Steve.

I'm frustrated with this same problem. In my case this happens only in my 10.5 macbook air and not in my 10.4 macbook pro. I've been renaming files in the same way in 10.2/10.3 and this never happened. Should be a bug. I've been searching for this issue and found this post at last - I really wonder why there aren't so many people mentioning this.
