ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and SQL Collation

I am planning to install a new ConfigMgr 2012 R2 server and use SQL Server 2012 SP2.
Does ConfigMgr 2012 R2 already support other SQL Collations than "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS"?
In other System Center 2012 R2 products "SQL_* collations are being deprecated for their Windows equivalents" according to
http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn281933.aspx

Generally speaking, no. There are two exceptions for use in China, see also:

  • SCCM 2012 R2 and SQL

    I have Two Questions
Should SCCM 2012 and SQL be installed on the same server?
Should SCCM 2012 be installed on the OS partition or have its own? C: Server 2012 and D:SCCM 2012
What size should my partition be for OS and SCCM either way?
I have a server running esxi.
One option I have would be to install SCCM and SQL on one (VM server) with Server 2012 OS. Its will be 8 processors and 32 RAM.
Option two will be to split into two VM's One running SCCM 2012 with 4 processors 16 Ram and another VM running SQL with 4 processors and 16 RAM
My environment is small, 3,500 users
    Thanks

For the SQL question, you will probably get as many answers as there are ConfigMgr admins.  I typically co-locate SQL on the site server.  As long as enough CPU, disk, and memory resources are allocated, this should be fine.  Consider limiting
SQL's maximum memory use to a reasonable amount based on the environment.  Many times the answer to the question depends on the environment and how database administration is handled.
I just found a good article here:
    http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2014/12/20/why-you-should-not-use-remote-sql-server-with-configmgr-2012/
For the disk partition question, I always install ConfigMgr on a separate partition.  Keep in mind that a distribution point will be installed as well.  You don't want content for ConfigMgr filling up the OS partition.  Use the no_sms_on_drive.sms
file to prevent DP content from being stored on your OS partition.
I am sure others will have advice as well.  Hopefully that helps.

  • Scenario – Multi Tenant ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and Same IP Address range for multiple customer

The service provider plans on managing customer’s workstation/desktop via ConfigMgr 2012 R2 CU3 which is hosted at Service Provider’s network however the Secondary Site (MP/DP Role) is hosted at customer’s physical location and on their network but
not joined to customers domain. The service provide plans to have a one-way trust with each customer initiated from service provider to each customer and have a copy of customer’s DNS by way of ADC hosted at service providers network.
Now the challenge is that we might end up having plenty of customers who will have same IP/subnet range such as 192.168.1.x and wanted to know the impact/issues around deployment. We may have challenges defining boundaries/boundary group for same IP range
or subnet for each customer because you can't have two boundaries with same IP range or Subnet. Also, since we have one way trust, we don't get the option to view customer's AD sites and services...
We are testing a scenario where we’ve defined the DNSSUFFIX on CM client so the client knows which MP to talk and MP presents with the nearest DP this works out quite well where you’ve defined IP boundary but haven’t tested anything with two or more customers
with same IP Range – hence not sure how the same IP/subnet range would work.
Wondering if we DO NOT define any boundary or boundary group so the client assume it's on slow or unreliable network and set the applications
Deployment Option to "Download content from DP and run locally" and still receives the application – I know this works in workgroup scenario but will this be a feasible option when dealing with multiple customers with same IP range ?
Please note that we are not planning on publishing MP or AD Schema on customer network but since we have a one way trust, we can do a discovery of customer’s AD forest.
    Thoughts ?

This is a complex scenario which requires a lot of planning and even testing. Having no boundaries will work, but all DPs are treated as slow/remote then and it's not possible to define which one will be used then.

  • Which Laptop is good for VS 2012/2013 and SQL SERVER 2008 R2 /2012 ?

    Hi,
I am planing to buy a laptop.
I am gonna be using mostly for Visual sStudio 2013 and Sql Server 2012 .
    my budget is $1000.
confuse between DELL/ HP / LENOVO..!!!
    please help.

This is only a personal taste of mine:
I prefer to work in Virtual Machines. In fact I did set up a VM just for my programming. This has the advantage that games and other stuff are not slowed down by SQL Server Services and similiar stuff.
This also allows me to quickly make a small virtual networks with multiple clients if I need to test some client/server stuff.
Plus I am also a bit of an adminstrator and prefer to test stuff in VM's before I try them in the real world.
I prefer using Virtual Box for Virtual Machines, so one thing of big importance was support for VT-X/AMD-V. Without them Virtual Box cannot run x64 guests even on a x64 host system.
Otherwise I wanted Windows 8 (so I could finally learn to live with it/learn programming for it's UI). And of big importance was an upgrade of gaming ability (my old one had difficulty/impossibility to run most current games).
So I bought a x64, Win8 Gaming Laptop with 8 GiB RAM (so I can run 3-6 Windows 7 hosts in paralell) and looked that the CPU supported Hardware Virtualsiation.
Otherwise pretty much every current laptop will work. x64 OS might be prefereable, as .NET has some limitations under x32/x86 OS (like the
2 GiB limit). Multicore (2 or more) is pretty much the state of the art (are there still any single core CPU's out there?).
It of course needs to be a Windows (7 or 8) to support VS. New Laptops should have UEFI (all that are sold with Windows 8 have).
If you do not need a lot of storage, using a SSD instead of a HDD will propably speed up startups (Windows, Programms) and compilation times a lot (those are disk-heavy operations) - but I only know that it should and heard of people who have them.
Let's talk about MVVM: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wpf/thread/b1a8bf14-4acd-4d77-9df8-bdb95b02dbe2 Please mark post as helpfull and answers respectively.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and managing clients in untrusted forest

I have read documentations and I'm still not 100% sure what are the possible limitations in my situation. I have 2 AD forests without any trusts between them. I'm planning to deploy ConfigMgr 2012 R2 in forest A. I also have clients in forest B.
I need to install operating systems via PXE, applications and windows updates to clients in untrusted forest. I'm also planning to support internet clients.

You can manage clients in un-trusted forests. This blog is a good place to start.

  • Installation of SCCM 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2014 error

    Hello All,
I am attempting to setup SQL Server 2014 and SCCM 2012 R2 but I keep running into an error stating that "Configuration Manager requires Microsoft SQL Server
2008 SP2 w/ CU9........ all the way up to Microsoft SQL Server 2012 with CU2 or higher." I am using all evaluation versions for this configuration as we are looking to test and evaluate the products. I was trying it with SQL 2014 because I was running
into the same error with SQL 2012 and according to "http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2015/03/30/updated-sc2012-configmgr-sp1-and-sc2012r2-configmgr-support-sql-server-2014.aspx" SQL
2014 is supported with SCCM 2012 R2. SQL is installed locally on the same box.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tucker
Update: When running the Pre-Req check these are some of the failed returns.....
SQL Server Edition: Failed: Configuration Manager primary site and central administration site don't support SQL Server Express Edition
Not sure why it is recognizing SQL Express as this is a new machine.
SQL Server service running account: Failed: The logon account for the SQL Server service cannot be a local user account, NT SERVICE\<sql service name> or LOCAL SERVICE.  You must configure
the SQL Server service to use a valid domain account, NETWORK SERVICE, or LOCAL SYSTEM.
For the SQL Service I am using a domain account created specifically for this.

This has nothing to do with moving or restoring. The kb article says "This hotfix provides updated versions of the setup files and enables new installations
of the System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager site database role and the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 site database role in Microsoft SQL Server 2014"

  • FIM Reporting and SQL collation

In our existing FIM 2010 R2 implementation, we used the default collation of SQL 2008 R2, which is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
However, reading some articles, I got the impression that SQL server will need to be installed with Latin1_General_100_CI_AS collation for installing System Center 2012. I also read that FIM Service database will need to be in the same collation
(i.e. Latin1_General_100_CI_AS). This means we will need to rebuild the SQL server for FIM service.
However, reading the following article, I get a different impression. As long as the collation across all the SQL servers is the same, we should be good. Also, it is actually recommended to use SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS rather than Latin1_General_100_CI_AS.
In fact, The SCOM data warehouse installer will always install the data warehouse with SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS regardless of the SQL Server collation.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/servicemanager/archive/2012/05/24/clarification-on-sql-server-collation-requirements-for-system-center-2012.aspx
Can anybody please confirm the requirement?

    Thanks Brian
I am planning to put ALL FIM roles onto two nodes behind F5. I understand that FIM reporting has to be installed with FIMservice so yes I want to install FIM reporting role onto both FIMService nodes. I understand that I CAN do this from your response (thankyou)
because "there's a safeguard in place to ensure that only one server processes the reporting jobs at a time if it's enabled on more than one FIM Service server
Can you explain what or how this safeguard works - specifically which FIMService node will run this and how the other FIMService node (2) will pick up the job if the first FIMService (node 1 )fails - do I have to configure anything ?
Brian- with respect ; is Tomek's reply incorrect in the context of my configuration - otherwise I would need a standalone FIM Service server (not part of the F5 virtual server) running Reporting with no FIM reporting HA (beyond Hyper-V or other single node
    HA options) ?
I realllllyyyy appreciate this feedback and discussion as I have found very little w3 or forum information about load balancing and HA for FIM reporting (I don't mean the SCSM or DW components)
    Thanks again

  • System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services

I was able to connect SCOM12 to SQL14, however when I attempted to install Reporting Service in SCOM12 the pull down box was blank.
I installed reporting services on the same instance of SystemCenter, when that didn't work I tried creating a new instance that only included SSRS; remote registry is also running. The drop-down box within the SCOM installer is blank.
Is this an issue with reporting between SC12 and SQL14, yes I understand documentation says only sql server 2012 is supported, however I've seen many threads with SCOM12 and SQL12 that are having the same issues.
Is there something I may be missing, or do I have to install SQL12 and go through the process again?

    Hi,
As far as I know, the SCOM reporting server role should be installed on the same server where SQL reporting service installed.

  • SQL Server Setup Failure 0x84B10001 (SQL 2012 SP2 and SQL 2014 Standard)

I'm having a problem with SQL Server Setup. I had SQL Server 2012 R2 SP1 installed, and the SP2 installer would fail.
I decided to just get SQL Server 2014. The setup (and system configuration checker) for that fails with the same error.
    SQL Server Setup failure
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
'.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 231747.
    Error code 0x84B10001
I found this and other posts about similar problems that point at MSDE being the cause.

I definitely had MSDE installed, but I went through the steps to manually remove it and rebooted with no luck.

  • VB 2012 Express and SQL server 2012 Express

My Windows 7 computer just crashed and I am trying to resurrect my VB 2012 Express code.  I have been using Access 2007 but lost my license info and installation media, so I am considering a change to SQL server 2012.  I have downloaded it, but
I haven't a cue as to how to use it.  I need to convert my old Access 2007 data and then connect the result to my VB 2012 code.
    Please help.
    RONATMOODYLAKE

I know how to use a database engine, but what I downloaded as SQL server 2012 Express seems to be something else.  I am in <st1:place w:st="on">Africa</st1:place> and things don't work well here.  I
have an app that says SQL error and usage reporting, and when I answer the questions nothing happens.  This must not be the SQL 2012 Server Express (or is it?).  Maybe you can point me to a useful download link.  What I have is totally obscure.
Here is my goal:  I have a completed VB 2012 project that uses Access 2007.  My Windows 7 computer crashed and I am desperately trying to move the application to a Windows 8 machine.  I do not
have my installation disks for Access, so I thought I would give SQL server a try.  I obviously downloaded the wrong thing.  The Microsoft web site gives me the following download choices - none of these make sense and they are not explained - please
help - I downloaded the first one and it seems useless:

  • FastTrack Reference architectures for Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2012?

The latest Fast Track DW Refrence guide refers to Windows 2008 R2...is there a new guide that includes Windows Server 2012 R2?
Here is the link for the word doc that describes the architecture requirements
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh918452.aspx

    Hi Chuck,
According to your description, in deed, there is only introduce that the default settings should be used for the Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise operating system in document. However, personally, there is also apply to the platform of windows server 2012
R2. I recommend you that submit the requirement at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/.
If the requirement mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider to add this feature in the future version. Your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the level of service provided.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and DMZ Questions

I am working with a client who's security team has been a challenge.  They do not want to open any of the RPC Dynamic Range ports needed for communication between certain roles on the Primary Site server and a server they want setup in one of their
    DMZ's.
They have a domain in the DMZ and all devices are a member of that domain.  We successfully setup a management point but can't publish since the ports from the primary site server to a DC in the DMZ are not open.  We placed a DNS service locator
record in the DMZ and when we manually install the clients add the DNSSUFFIX and point to the MP in the DMZ.  The clients are reporting at this point.  However, they are not getting any software updates since the DP can't install and we don't allow
    failover to any other DP.
The client has said that there has to be other solutions.  The solution we are using isn't best practice I know that.
I guess there are three solutions here, correct?
    1.  Open DMZ site ports for clients to communicate only to ConfigMgr Server.  (Not secure)
    2.  Keep current design of MP/DP/SUP in DMZ?
    3.  Put a secondary site in DMZ?
I have two questions about 2 and 3.  Why should we add the SUP?  Shouldn't the client talk to the Management Point and the management point sends the request to the SUP on the ConfigMgr?   So can't we ditch that extra SUP?
Also, even if we put a secondary site in the DMZ, we will still run into port issues since the client is refusing to open RPC Dynamic port ranges?
Kristopher Turner | Not the brightest bulb but by far not the dimmest bulb.

Yes 3 is out ConfigMgr wise.
I would not call 1 insecure though. Open ports are not insecure, that's a myth perpetuated by those who don't know what a port is. Network security is about controlling the traffic and securing the endpoints. Ultimately, that may be a battle you won't win
though because of political reasons and the perpetuation of myths in network security and the purpose of DMZs.
Option 2 is what most/nearly all folks go with. If one port is open, you may as well open them all because security wise there is no true difference so any resistance here is ignorance. As long as the traffic is confined to a single endpoint, the port its
using makes no difference and the level of security comes down to, as mentioned, the security posture and controls in place on that endpoint itself -- who cares that the traffic has a data field set to 80 or 443 or 1024 as long as the target is well controlled, "secured", and
    monitored.
There ultimately aren't any other ways (besides 1 and 2) to accomplish this using only ConfigMgr proper. The ports required are well documented on TechNet so there's no magic to make these go away.
Another architectural solution however is to use reverse proxy. This is a twist on choice 1 except that all client traffic passes through the reverse proxy instead to reach the internal site systems.

  • Inplace upgrade SCCM 2012 R2 server OS from 2008 R2 to 2012R2 and SQL 2008R2 to 2012

    Hi
Is it possible to do inplace upgrade?
    I have Windows Server 2008 R2, SCCM 2012 R2 CU1, SQL 2008 R2, WSUS and MDT 2013.
Can I upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2 and SQL server 2012?
Are there any catches which I must know before upgrade?
Do I start upgrade with OS and then SQL?

The in-place upgrade of the operating system is not supported...

  • Remove only SQL Server 2012 Standard and keep Express 2012

Hi everybody, We have installed both SQL 2012 Express and SQL 2012 Standard (licensed). All our instances which we need are running fine on the Express version.
I’m having problems uninstalling the licensed SQL 2012 Standard one. When starting the uninstall process I cannot see which server I’m removing.
My question is: how I can only for sure! remove the SQL 2012 Standard version and keep the Express 2012 working?
    Greetings. TIA
    win_builder

    Hi,
To remove instance of SQL Server you have to go to Add remove program and search for
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (64 bit)
Then right click on it and select Uninstall/Change and screen will appear where you have to select REMOVE
then click on remove and below screen will appear
From above see the drop down , select SQL Server standard instance you want to remove. In your case it would be standard edition
On next page select features you want to remove
bThen Next... Next and you would remove SQL Server standard
    Edit:
You can also uninstall from command line as below
    Setup.exe /Action=Uninstall /FEATURES=SQL,AS,RS,IS,Tools /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER
Here /features is features you want to uninstall
/instancename is instance name of your standard edition

  • No reports are visible in ConfigMgr 2012 R2 console but in visible in SSRS report manager

I'm installing ConfigMgr 2012 R2 with SQL server R2 SP2 in my lab environment. Everuthing went fine until i stumped upon a problem where the reports are not visible in Admin console but are visible in IE
I've gone through all the pre requisites and everything looks good.
The installation went fine and no errors in srsrpsetup.log and srsrpmsi.log
Reports are returning values while i'm running through IE
changed the AdminUIlog level to verbose and found the below error whenever i refresh the reporting node.
    [44, PID:10712][12/20/2013 04:16:39] :Console query 'AllReports' started
    [44, PID:10712][12/20/2013 04:16:39] :SRSQuery: Executing query [AllReports] - [/ConfigMgr_LAB]
    [44, PID:10712][12/20/2013 04:16:39] :[sccm.lab.local] : The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable.
    [44, PID:10712][12/20/2013 04:16:39] :[sccm.lab.local] : The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable.
[12, PID:10712][12/20/2013 04:16:39] :Actions returned from cache for node 'msscnav://root/Windows/Wunderbar/ConsoleDisplay/MonitoringNode/MonitoringNodeOverview/ReportingRootNode/ReportsNode'.
    Any ideas ?

Thank you Garth, I can access the reports from other hosts as well.
Yes ,Newly created admins can see all the reports
I've gone through the event logs and nothing related to SSRS.
I dont think it's a FQDN issue, bcoz ican see in the logs the that the admin console successfully connected to reporting service. Only while retreiving the reports it throws error

and as you can see, it gives me "HTTP status 401: Unauthorized." instead "HTTP status Unnavailable".
Yes, i'm not a fan of accessing reports via console, but i dont want to leave an issue unresolved.
