ConfigMgr 2012 R2 client on Windows 7 SP1 x86 causes "Program Compatibility Assistant" to appear

After I upgraded to R2 I am seeing the message below on newly installed Windows 7 SP1 x86 machines when I go to Control Panel and open the Configuration Manager Properties and then close it. This seems to only happen on 32-bit Win7 not on 64-bit.
I have created a new package for the client from definition and I also tried building new images using my Build and Capture task sequences. In this case I get the same message on the x86 Windows 7 SP1 machine if I log on after the Build & Capture is
done. My Build And Capture sequences uses the RTM-image for Windows 7 SP1 that has been patched using Offline Servicing.
Has anyone else seen this? Everything is working normally on the clients and if I click "This control panel works correctly" the message goes away. However, if I click "Open the control panel using recommended settings" that results in
admin-rights being required to open the Configuration Manager Properties under the Control Panel.
Regards,
Carl

I just pinged the product team and they are not aware of this issue at all so please someone open a support case with CSS where the issue can be worked.

I'll be opening a support case first thing monday :)

Hi Tim
How did you go with this? We're still seeing this issue migrating Windows 7 x86 machines from the ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 R3/ConfigMgr 2012 client to the ConfigMgr 2012 R2 client in multiple environments.
Cheers
Sam
Ticket opened with Microsoft Support, still no fix but I will keep you all posted.

You have to disable write filters on that device first.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Client Failes to Install on HP EliteBook laptops with Synaptics Touchpad drivers

I've come across a fairly frustrating issue that has been taking up way too much of my time that past week or so. The issue started a little after some of our larger sites were migrated from SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012. I started getting complaints that one of
our technical workstations (HP 8770w) was not deploying properly. I started investigating the issue and the problem involved the removal of the old ConfigMgr 2007 client and install of the new SCCM 2012 R2 client.
The Windows 7 x64 OS WIM that I am using is one that was migrated from the 07 to 2012 environment and it has been working fine. During the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr step the old client is removed and the new one for the 2012 environment installs. There
has not been any issues with this, but I feel something has changed now that we are deploying the 2012 R2 client.
Back to the issue, what happens is that the ConfigMgr client fails to uninstall the old client. Looking in the client.msi_uninstall file you will see that it is unable to locate a couple of SCCM 2007 configmgr client patches that were installed so it can
uninstall it. I get the "Couldn't find local patch ''. Looking for it at its source." line in the uninstall file. When I look for that under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Patches the ENTIRE directory structure is empty. There is not a single item
    listed under patches.
Since the only thing that happens in between the pushing down of the WIM and installing the configmgr client is the drivers that is where I started to look. I started over with the basics (disk and network driver) and it was able to complete the OSD process
(like the other 30+ models we currently support). I added drivers one by one having the system re-image each time. When I got to the Synaptics TouchPad drivers the issue would return. I've tried around 5 different drivers offered from the vendor and they
all result in the same behavior.
I'm still actively troubleshooting how to FIX this issue, but I have no idea why this is going on. I thought I would share with the community on this issue and see if anyone else has observed this VERY odd behavior.

    @Narcoticoo
I've not used the tool. This issue has also expanded since the original title as I'm getting the same behavior with the driver package that does not include the Touchpad driver anymore. I'm currently going back to just the network and storage driver to see
    if it works or not.
However, this is the bigger issue I have:
I have an older build called Build 5.7 internally. Using that WIM and the same driver package (original one that has the Touchpad driver included) it works without issue. Never had a problem.
The new build is called Build 6.0 internally. This WIM and the same driver package has not been working at all.
We support about 35 models with our current Windows 7 x64 image and I am having the same failure issue on four different HP models. They are the 8770w, ZBook 17, Z600 and Z820. The majority of the other systems are Dell devices. Just for transparency sakes,
nothing Dell specific is in the core WIM that is captured.
So, Build 5.7 can deploy just fine on all pieces of hardware with their old driver packages. The new Build 6.0 intalls on almost every platform fine with their old driver packages. These four HP systems are nothing but trouble though. I've opened a case
with HP to see if they have noticed anything internally. I'm not too hopeful, but at least it is something. Maybe there is some odd conflict with a newer Windows patch or some odd dependency on older HP drivers. The new image has .NET 4.5.1, IE 10 and so forth.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Client Push Failing when InTune is Agent is Installed

    Hello,
I am in the process of migrating the ConfigMgr client from 2007 to 2012 R2 using Client Push.  On machines that have the 2007 client and InTune Agent installed, the 2012 Push is failing.  The "Client deployment failure report" is stating
the Failure Description as "Windows Intune client is detected" and the Description Parameter is "5.0.7958.1000 Deployment Error x80004005".
Does anyone know if the ConfigMgr 2012 client can co-exist with the InTune Agent and if so, what is the process for performing the Client Installation.
    Thanks

As far as I'm aware you can only uninstall Intune by
    1. retiring the device through the Intune console
    2. using a script. Download it here

  • Install 11gR2 client on Windows 7 in the Program Files (x86) folder

    Hi,
We have a requirement to install the 11g R2 client 32bit on Windows 7 into the Program Files (x86) folder. We already have the 10g client installed into this location, and wish to keep the Oracle software in the same ORACLE_BASE location.
The installer fails with an error INS-32010 String contains invalid characters.
Is there a way to work around this, or are we going to have to change the ORACLE_BASE location?
Any help or experiences shared will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Alex

    It should allow .
The issue lies some where else
    Below is mandatory :
Ensure that the paths you select for Oracle software, such as Oracle home paths and the Oracle base path, use only ASCII characters. Because installation owner names are used by default for some paths, this ASCII character restriction applies to user names, file names, and directory names.

  • Novell GINA removed after R2 upgrade to ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 client

I am working with a customer and we just noticed an issue when upgrading some of their SCCM 2012 SP1 clients to R2.  After the upgrade, everything appears to work fine, but as soon as a restart happens, the Novell GINA is replaced by the Windows GINA.
These machines were running Windows XP SP3 with Novell Client 4.91 SP5.  This did not occur when installing the ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 client originally, but appears to happen every time when the ConfigMgr client is upgraded to R2.  I wouldn't have
thought the ConfigMgr 2012 R2 client upgrade would have anything to do with the GINA, but we can replicate the issue.
It's not due to Windows Updates getting installed in the background while the client is temporarily unmanaged, which was my initial thought.  We ensured the policy to disable Windows Updates was correctly in place and that no updates were installed.
The only fix so far is to completely remove the Novell client and reinstall it.
Has anyone else run in to this?
    Thanks!

Yes, I have seen this when we took over a group that had Novell. It was ConfigMgr 2007 at the time.  We only had to keep Novell long enough to completely remove it later.  So your process is correct.

    2. Cannot access the MSP file when available locally on the client in the "'C:\_SMSTASKSEQUENCE" folder.

I always fall back to use this method, when dealing with hotfixes in a task sequence:

  • How import or publish ConfigMgr 2012 client into WSUS

Hi, I'm trying to deploy ConfigMgr 2012 r2 client through WSUS. But, I do not want to install SUP role on that WSUS server. What are my options.
I've tried Local update publisher to publish ConfigMgr client to WSUS and it works but not as I expected.
Whenever a client installs the ConfigMgr client from WSUS it downloads the client packages from DP and does not use the files available in the cab file. Is there a way to specify current directory as Source in ccmsetup switches?
I see I am left with installing the pre-requisites as separate update then execute client.msi to install sccm client. But that's a pain.. Anybody have any ideas?
Kindly mark as answer/Vote as helpful if a reply from anybody helped you in this forum. Delphin

Jason, That branch is not poorly connected. It has relatively lower bandwidth when compared with the centralized network. It can handle the client communication well and good. (I feel that I've not stated clearly in my previous reply)
The real question that I currently have(No offence), if at all I want to use the WSUS server as the main source for client deployment, what are my options?
Can I specify current directory as Source in ccmsetup.exe command line? (I don't see that can be done)
I'm thinking of a Vbscript to install pre-requisites and execute client.msi with required switches, but this would be my last approach. Do we have any better approach to accomplish this?.
Kindly mark as answer/Vote as helpful if a reply from anybody helped you in this forum. Delphin

  • I can't turn windows program compatibility off

I enabled "turn off application compatibility engine" and "turn off program compatibility assistant" in computer configuration (through group policy edit) and also "turn off program compatibility assistant" in user configuration,
and still when I try to install visual studio it says: "Windows Program Compatibility mode is on. Turn it off and then try Setup again". where should I turn off windows program compatibility? once I enabled "remove program compatibility property
page" and now I don't have this page even after I disabled this setting. now how can I have this page back? Is there a command that I can use it in cmd to change these settings?

    Hi,
    Here is the workaround:
    Rename the EXE accordingly:
    Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate -> vs_ultimate.exe
    Premium -> vs_premium.exe
    Pro -> vs_professional.exe
    Express for Web -> vns_full.exe
    Express for Windows -> win8express_full.exe
    Express for Desktop -> wdexpress_full.exe

  • Client Push on Windows 7 x86 with IE9 open.

I everyone, I need to validate something.
I am currently deploying SCCM 2012 R2 for a client of mine.
They are using mainly Windows 7 with SP1 x86 with IE9 installed.
When doing  client push from the console or installing any SCCM agent update, we are getting an error message stating the IE just crashed and the error is talking about IEFrame.dl:
Doing the same thing on a Windows 7 with SP1 x64 is not getting an error message.
Anyone can reproduce the error on is side? Or anyone know a workaround for this issue?
We are talking about SCCM 2012 R2 CU3 doing a client push on a Windows 7 with SP1.
There is no update done on Windows (I was using the default install.wim at first then applied all updates) and IE9 is installed (installation file downloaded at
    http://techdows.com/2011/03/download-ie9-final-offlinestandalone-installer.html).
I will try the same thing with a all the updates installed on Windows 7 x86.
    Thank you for your help.
    Mathieu

After some troubleshooting and a bit of luck, the problem is the following:
The December update KB3008923 (Cumulative Update for IE December 2014) was causing the problem on IE9.
The update released on January 2015 KB3025945 is fixing the issue.
This is not an update available through WSUS so you have to look for it at
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com.
There is a bit more information, the problem is recurring but I did not found which task was causing the error so it was not only the installation that was causing the problem. After installing the KB3008923, the problem was present on any x86 Windows 7
computer running any version of configMgr agent (tested on 2012 SP1 and 2012 R2).
After installing the January update, the problem is gone.

  • WebDAV error when doing a client push ConfigMgr 2012 R2

Hi everyone, I am getting an error message when doing a client push, only on some DPs.
    Here is the setup:
    ConfigMgr 2012 R2 on Server 2012 R2.
DP are on Server 2008 R2 (for the most part).
DP are installed using the exact same way, adding the Primary Site Server to the local Admins group, then using the console to install the role, selecting BranchCache and Configure IIS.
    No PXE.
Boundary groups are configured as appropriate.
When initiating a client push the following errors are displayed in the CCMSetup.log:
Failed to correctly receive a WEBDAV HTTP request.. (StatusCode at WinHttpQueryHeaders: 401)
Failed to check url http://DPServerName.com/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/S0100003. Error 0x80004005
Enumerated all 1 local DP locations but none of them is good. Fallback to MP.
    GET 'HTTP://MPServerName.com/CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cab'
The installation is done but yet again, no local DP are used.
The same scenario is actually working on other DP that was configured using the same exact way.
Servers where not new installation and where used for other things:
    MDT Deployment Share with PXE.
    Other share.
As far as I can tell, IIS is well configured as I am able to deploy any other software on clients and they are using the local DP. Only the client installation is causing problem.
    Anyone have any idea?
There is a lot of post about a similar problem on ConfigMgr 2007 but all solution are to configure WebDAV, which is not configured in ConfigMgr 2012.
Thank you guys for any tip and/or help!
    Mathieu

I did double checked with a friend about my configuration and everything, just to make sure, and everything seems to be right.
As for the use of account used to get the client, a domain join computer will not need to us the network access account if the DP is in the same domain and the same exact config on other servers is working like a charm deploying the client, same
    security and configuration.
All default IIS security and share permission.
Thank you guys for your suggestion and help.

  • Failed to resume task sequence / ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 vs. R2

We have two configMgr environment at customers place.  A Lab Environment and production Environment. Till July 2014 both environment were at the same Version level (ConfigMgr 2012 SP1).
We create the WIM-Image in LAB to use this WIM in the production. There were no problems till yet. Some months before we updated our
LAB to ConfigMgr 2012 R2 CU2. The Production is still
ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 CU3. Now if we create a new image in our LAB we can't use this Image in Production.
OSD ends after 'Setup Windows and ConfigMgr' step. There is an error:
Can't we use an captured Image from a ConfigMgr 2012 R2 environment in a ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 environment?

I am not 100% if this is really supported (even if the versions were equal). I've seen situations where you can still see references to the MP and sitecode of the test environment when having a close look at the logs (although it did not cause real issues).

  • ConfigMgr 2012R2 / Software Update feature - Windows Update Service on clients

    Hi,
ConfigMgr 2012R2 / Software Update feature.
Is it necessary that the Windows Update Service on clients is running???
    Thanks

It doesn't have to be running Automatic if that's what you're asking, but it shouldn't be
Disabled either. The ConfigMgr client will trigger it to scan for updates. For a nice documentation about the whole process see:

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and managing clients in untrusted forest

I have read documentations and I'm still not 100% sure what are the possible limitations in my situation. I have 2 AD forests without any trusts between them. I'm planning to deploy ConfigMgr 2012 R2 in forest A. I also have clients in forest B.
I need to install operating systems via PXE, applications and windows updates to clients in untrusted forest. I'm also planning to support internet clients.

You can manage clients in un-trusted forests. This blog is a good place to start.

Managing internet clients is called IBCM (Internet Based Client Management). You can read about it here

  • Leave Data Drive (D:) Untouched During Rebuild In ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 Task Sequence

    Windows Server 2008 R2, ConfigMgr 2012 SP1
I'm looking for a way to put logic on a Task Sequence that will only format/wipe the OS partition during a rebuild i.e. leave the Data Partition (D: drive) untouched.
I have removed "Format And Partition Disk" task then which
option should be selected in "Apply operating system images" task.
    SourabhR

Thanks Peter, Its worked for me :)
After proceeding with this approach got another block.
how could i avoid such cases as shown below where another partition is available before the boot partition. According to
Next available formatted partition option, highlighted partition will be wiped and will get the OS.
Is there any way like preflight checks (TS variable or wmi queries, conditions),so i can avoid this type of scenarios.
