ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Site Misbehaving

Hi Everyone,
My environment was 100% stable through Friday last week. Starting Monday morning I started seeing the following behavior:
OSD Task Sequences are failing with "There are no task sequences available for this computer".
All deployments (software updates, applications, etc) are sitting idle. Clients are not taking them.
Deployment summarization is not updating. My client software updates from yesterday are still reading all "Unknown".
Starting today I haven't seen any updated hardware or software inventory.
We did install the June patches to our production servers over the weekend. These patches were all deployed to our lab and tested first, but its the only item that sticks out.
I've checked various logs and the monitors in the console. Nothing is standing out. Anyone have any ideas?
Patches for our Primary Site Server:
Site Database Server:

I'm not seeing any errors in the console. I started digging into the SQL database and it looks like that might be the culprit. I started getting a number of errors the day we patched and rebooted the DB server.

  • Upgrading a ConfigMgr 2012 Secondary site

    Hello All,
Just to get a clarification, Is it possible to upgrade or promote an existing ConfigMgr 2012 Secondary site to a Primary Site. I didn't install any seoarate SQL server for secondary site. Am using the default SQL configuration.
    Please help.
    V I S H N U

I didn't install any seoarate SQL server for secondary site. Am using the default SQL configuration.
That is not true. Secondary sites require SQL Server and will automatically install SQL Server Express.
Can you please elaborate on why you are trying to do this?

  • ConfigMgr 2012 - Expected compression ratio for upstream traffic - Secondary site to Primary

What compression ratio should we expect for upstream traffic (I guess mostly specific to inventory) from a ConfigMgr 2012 secondary site to a primary? We are debating between secondary site and DP for some sites with slow network links.
We are concerned about SQL replication even working with a secondary site on some of the slower link sites (e.g. 512K)
    Thank you.

It doesn't, I just wanted to get the full picture since you mentioned you were debating between secondary sites vs. dp's.  In my personal experience I've seen customers who want to do a Primary and Secondary when they only have a few hundred PC's and
2 locations (which often is overkill depending on bandwidth and other factors).  Just wanted to make sure I had all info first.
I'll try to find some exact numbers for you, I don't have any handy unfortunately.  In the meantime, here's this page in case you haven't seen it yet.  It is pretty handy and has some links to other, potentially useful pages.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712701.aspx
I can tell you from past experience the delta's that SCCM 2012 does for inventory are pretty low impact, but again, I don't have any exact numbers or ranges.  I do apologize I don't have exactly what you're needing handy.  I'll reply back if I
    can dig them up.

  • Can we recover SCCM 2012 R2 site Servers and SQL DB from hyper V or Vmware VM snapshot

    Hi Folks
Can we recover SCCM 2012 R2 site Servers and SQL DB from hyper V or Vmware VM snapshot
if yes is there any challenges or any document available from Microsoft on Hyper V SCCM VM snapshot recovery.

I've made it work and it "should" work. However it's not the best practice method of site recovery. You should recover using a SQL restore.
    See good example
    http://anoopcnair.com/2012/07/01/sccm-configmgr-2012-primary-site-server-and-database-recovery-part-1/
Note that you should be using snapshots only on occasions when you are carrying out a risky operation. You can revert it the operation fails. It is not a substitute for a robust backup solution.

  • SCCM 2012 Primary Site Recovery - Packages not working

I recently had to recover my Primary Site due to system crashes with blue screens on a daily basis. I was running ConfigMgr 2012 SP CU 3 and as part of the process I migrated from WS2008 R2 to WS2012 R2.
After many hours of perusing the web, I found the solutions to deal with the common site recovery issues such as SSL certs, and the content validation due to an empty ContentLib folder. I also had the issue with the update source where it listed the old
WSUS 3.2 server and the new one so the Site GUID was also updated.
The issue I am currently experiencing is that packages new or old including software update packages are not working. When using the script by Peter VanWoulde it lists the Deployment State as Error. I have tried redistributing them, valdiating the content,
removing distribution points, adding in new distribution points and even recreating some of the smaller packages to test but nothing is working.
Application deployments are working without issues.

At this point I am running out of ideas of where to look.

    Hi Xin,
Sorry for not responding earlier but I did recover the site using the guidelines in the following article Backup and Recovery in Configuration Manager,
however there were a few issues.
I did not have a ContentLib backup so all the content had to be redistributed and validated before that worked. None of my packages new or old would work. I eventually found an article from a forum member who also initiated a Site Reset as part of their
recovery process and had no issues.
So it seems that any packages are still not working and i think I narrowed it down.
For some reason even though my DP and MP are all set for HTTPS, it is trying to access the HTTP path for SMS_DP_SMSPKG$. I am using PKI certs so this is the correct path but it should be HTTPS.

Obviously its not ideal for the CU1 client msp to be installed over the WAN. Can anyone explain why:
    1. The client seems to need a repair
    2. Cannot access the MSP file when available locally on the client in the "'C:\_SMSTASKSEQUENCE" folder.

I always fall back to use this method, when dealing with hotfixes in a task sequence:

It may be worth a shot to try it out, if you haven't already.

  • Scenario – Multi Tenant ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and Same IP Address range for multiple customer

The service provider plans on managing customer’s workstation/desktop via ConfigMgr 2012 R2 CU3 which is hosted at Service Provider’s network however the Secondary Site (MP/DP Role) is hosted at customer’s physical location and on their network but
not joined to customers domain. The service provide plans to have a one-way trust with each customer initiated from service provider to each customer and have a copy of customer’s DNS by way of ADC hosted at service providers network.
Now the challenge is that we might end up having plenty of customers who will have same IP/subnet range such as 192.168.1.x and wanted to know the impact/issues around deployment. We may have challenges defining boundaries/boundary group for same IP range
or subnet for each customer because you can't have two boundaries with same IP range or Subnet. Also, since we have one way trust, we don't get the option to view customer's AD sites and services...
We are testing a scenario where we’ve defined the DNSSUFFIX on CM client so the client knows which MP to talk and MP presents with the nearest DP this works out quite well where you’ve defined IP boundary but haven’t tested anything with two or more customers
with same IP Range – hence not sure how the same IP/subnet range would work.
Wondering if we DO NOT define any boundary or boundary group so the client assume it's on slow or unreliable network and set the applications
Deployment Option to "Download content from DP and run locally" and still receives the application – I know this works in workgroup scenario but will this be a feasible option when dealing with multiple customers with same IP range ?
Please note that we are not planning on publishing MP or AD Schema on customer network but since we have a one way trust, we can do a discovery of customer’s AD forest.
    Thoughts ?

This is a complex scenario which requires a lot of planning and even testing. Having no boundaries will work, but all DPs are treated as slow/remote then and it's not possible to define which one will be used then.

  • Can we assign 2 IPs for a SCCM 2012 primary site server and use 1 IP for communicating with its 2 DPs and 2nd one for communicating with its upper hierarchy CAS which is in a different .Domain

    Hi,
Can we assign 2 IPs for a SCCM 2012 primary site server and use 1 Ip for communicating with its 2 DPs and 2nd one for communicating with its upper hierarchy CAS . ?
Scenario: We are building 1 SCCM 2012 primary site and 2 DPs in one domain . In future this will attach to a CAS server which is in different domain. Can we assign  2 IPs in Primary site server , one IP will use to communicate with its 2 DPs and second
IP for communicating with the CAS server which is in a different domain.?
    Details:
    1)Server : Windows 2012 R2 Std , VM environment .2) SCCM : SCCM 2012 R2 .3)SQL: SQL 2012 Std
    Thanks
    Rajesh Vasudevan

First, it's not possible. You cannot attach a primary site to an existing CAS.
Primary sites in 2012 are *not* the same as primary sites in 2007 and a CAS is 2012 is completely different from a central primary site in 2007.
CASes cannot manage clients. Also, primary sites are *not* used for delegation in 2012. As Torsten points out, multiple primary sites are used for scale-out (in terms of client count) only. Placing primary sites for different organizational units provides
no functional differences but does add complexity, latency, and additional failure points.
Thus, as the others have pointed out, your premise for doing this is completely incorrect. What are your actual business goals?
As for the IP Addressing, that depends upon your networking infrastructure. There is no way to configure ConfigMgr to use different interfaces for different types of traffic. You could potentially manipulate the routing tables in Windows but that's asking
    for trouble IMO.

  • WebDAV error when doing a client push ConfigMgr 2012 R2

Hi everyone, I am getting an error message when doing a client push, only on some DPs.
    Here is the setup:
    ConfigMgr 2012 R2 on Server 2012 R2.
DP are on Server 2008 R2 (for the most part).
DP are installed using the exact same way, adding the Primary Site Server to the local Admins group, then using the console to install the role, selecting BranchCache and Configure IIS.
    No PXE.
Boundary groups are configured as appropriate.
When initiating a client push the following errors are displayed in the CCMSetup.log:
Failed to correctly receive a WEBDAV HTTP request.. (StatusCode at WinHttpQueryHeaders: 401)
Failed to check url http://DPServerName.com/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/S0100003. Error 0x80004005
Enumerated all 1 local DP locations but none of them is good. Fallback to MP.
    GET 'HTTP://MPServerName.com/CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cab'
The installation is done but yet again, no local DP are used.
The same scenario is actually working on other DP that was configured using the same exact way.
Servers where not new installation and where used for other things:
    MDT Deployment Share with PXE.
    Other share.
As far as I can tell, IIS is well configured as I am able to deploy any other software on clients and they are using the local DP. Only the client installation is causing problem.
    Anyone have any idea?
There is a lot of post about a similar problem on ConfigMgr 2007 but all solution are to configure WebDAV, which is not configured in ConfigMgr 2012.
Thank you guys for any tip and/or help!
    Mathieu

I did double checked with a friend about my configuration and everything, just to make sure, and everything seems to be right.
As for the use of account used to get the client, a domain join computer will not need to us the network access account if the DP is in the same domain and the same exact config on other servers is working like a charm deploying the client, same
    security and configuration.
All default IIS security and share permission.
Thank you guys for your suggestion and help.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 Agent Installation permanently failed with Error 1603

We have some clients, where the agent must be reinstalled. But it fails permanently with Error 1603. I have tried the following steps allready:
Delete the CCMSETUP and CCM Folder and start from scratch
    Repair WMI by deleting root\ccm
    Recreated the WMI Repository
Register all *.dll and *.mof in WBEM
Cleaned up with the ccmclean Tool
    We use SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3
The error happens on Vista and Windows 7
From the logs, it looks that something went wrong with the ccmexec service, but I'm not sure. In the Eventlogs are some entries from the Search Service that the Service unexpectly stopped. But not much more.

CCMClean.exe is not supported for ConfigMgr 2012, but I guess that you know that :)
Have you tried 'ccmsetup.exe /uninstall', wait for it to complete and then install again?
Perhaps the steps taken in the last comment from this thread can help you:

  • SCCM 2012 - Primary Site Installation in a existing hierarchy

    Hi,
During Primary site installation the setup is unable to retrieve the site code from the specified central administration site server. Verified that the,
Primary site server is a local admin on CAS
User account is local admin on CAS and SysAdmin on CAS SQL
User account is full administrator on CAS
User account is local admin on Primary and SysAdmin on Primary SQL
    Windows firewall is disabled.
    Please help on this issue.
    Regards, Lorin Davis

I've seen this .. when I was in the page “Specify Join the primary site to an existing hierarchy” and provided the FQDN of the Central Administration Site (CAS) server.
I would recommend to verify the prerequisites checks I mentioned in the following post.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Deployment Using a SAN

I am working on deploying a SCCM 2012 R2 Standalone Primary Site with a co-located CM12 SQL (aka "on box") database .
I try to follow best practices as much as possible and I split up the drives to break up the CM12 SQL DB and Log files according to what I have researched.
    I have 3 questions:
    First Question:
I was then asked by the IT Manager of the company why I required so many drives to break up the SQL files if all the data will be held on the SAN anyway and I didn’t really know how to respond.
If a SAN is going to be used, why should I use multiple drives to break up the CM12 SQL site database files if they are just going to be contained on one SAN anyway?
    Second Question:
This question relies on how the first question is answered.
If the consensus is to still use multiple drives to break up the CM12 SQL DB files (.mdf, .ldf, TempDB) should I use just one BIG .vhd and partition it, or use multiple VHD files?
I did read that when virtualizing SQL you should use multiple Fixed VHDs.
    Third Question
How do I determine the size needed for the Content Library and would I need to use a Dynamic VHD for that?
    That's all I have.
Thanks a lot everyone. Your help is always greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again Jason.
I read this article here by Johan Arwidmark that seemed pretty interesting regarding sizing an SCCM 2012 using the SQLIO tool:
    http://www.deploymentresearch.com/Research/tabid/62/EntryId/115/Sizing-your-ConfigMgr-2012-R2-Primary-Site-Server.aspx
Also, I used Kent Agerlund's nice lil Excel spreadsheet he put together that helps SCCM Admins with SQL sizing and he also provides an SQL script that will dynamically create the SCCM 2012 DB files (I think the .sql file was built by Microsoft) located here:
    http://blog.coretech.dk/kea/slides-and-scripts-from-the-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-r2-advanced-infrastructure-session-wcl307/
So, putting your feedback along with their info, I can get a pretty good idea of what I need to get done. By the way, I am NOT a SAN guy by any means so this has helped. I just always want to make sure I have everything in order prior to deployment and receiving
advice from multiple MVPs is golden.
Thanks again for your help, Jason. I really do appreciate it brother.
Also, if you two fellas happen to come across this thread, thank very much as well Johan and Kent.

  • ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and SQL Collation

I am planning to install a new ConfigMgr 2012 R2 server and use SQL Server 2012 SP2.
Does ConfigMgr 2012 R2 already support other SQL Collations than "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS"?
In other System Center 2012 R2 products "SQL_* collations are being deprecated for their Windows equivalents" according to
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn281933.aspx

Generally speaking, no. There are two exceptions for use in China, see also:
