Configurable Drop Box app folder location
Nice simple one - can the Dropbox app be updated so that we can choose where the apps local mirror folder is located? At the moment it seems to be fixed in the public folder (presumably as that will always exist), which works but of course it does mean that anyone who has local network access can see all the files/folders in your Dropbox account that you've got mirrored there. I'm guessing that not many people actually want that, although they may not realise it's what is currently the case. For me it would be better if by default it ends up with its own share, which could then be made either public or private with controlled access as desired.
The Drop Box folder in ~/Public is not part of the Dropbox application. It is in fact part of Mac OS X so you shouldn't need to delete it.

Privileges/permissions issue with drop box/archive folder
Hi there,
I'm having an issue with the permissions on a folder on my iMac. I'm running Leopard. Here at our office, I have my computer set up just like everyone else; within my drop box I have an folder titled "Archive", and within the archive folder I have a folder named after the boss' external hard drive. When the files are on her hard drive, she moves them into this folder so that we know they're completed and can be burned to disc.
For some reason though, she can no longer access this folder in my drop to drag anything into it. One day I found something online that told me to set something through my system preferences. It worked, but I can't remember what I did! The folder seems to have "relapsed" and once again, she can't access it. "Get Info" doesn't work, no matter how many times I change the permissions- it always says everyone should be able to read and write. I've also tried changing permissions and shared folders in the "Sharing" section of system preferences. It just doesn't seem to want to go. I think she might be running Tiger; is there a possibility that that's the issue?
Any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!I would check the system preferences / sharing / file sharing .. highlight file sharing (leftside) and setting to edit changes will be on right side for 10.6.x S Leopard. I would look for a somewhat similar setup in Tiger for its file sharing settings.

PSE 7 confusion about folder location, help needed
Here's some background: I'm using PhotoShop Elements 7 on Win XP. I have an external firewire hard drive I use for overflow/backups. Originally, this showed up as a K: drive on my system.
I added a RAID controller and two more drives to stripe as a single drive for temp space rendering movies. This ended up as a K: drive and the external moved to L: However, when I did this there were some pictures from my catalog that I had on the external drive. I have used File > reconnect missing files to handle the moves, but PSE is still confused (very).
PSE has started to mix up the RAID (K:) and external (L:) content. If I move a set of pictures (e.g. a folder of them) onto the external drive (L:) via drag and drop in the folder location view, the folder will show up empty on the L: heirarchy, but will show up as a gray folder icon in the K: RAID drive hierarchy. If I open up windows explorer, the RAID drive will appear empty. In other cases (I'm not sure when/how yet), pictures physically end up on the RAID drive itself instead of the external. I have uninstalled both the external drive and the RAID drive and reinstalled them both, but they are still getting confused in the folder view by PSE. I've also tried moving content outside of PSE and just reconnecting missing files, but it still wants to put things under the K: RAID drive instead of the external L:.
I've searched everywhere I can think of for a description of what gray folder icons in the folder location view means and can find none. I'm not sure how to convince PSE that there's nothing on the RAID K: drive and it shouldn't try to connect the two. Any suggestions?

JimThank you! I ran psedbtool and the output shows the catalog has the wrong drive letter for the L: drive.
Is there a way to make PSE forget about the K: and L: drives that it is so confused about so that it can relearn of their existence? If I use the drive letter reassignment to fix PSE, it will break other apps that are now dependent on the current drive letter assignments. I've tried removing all files from the L: drive, but it's still remembered as part of the catalog.

Yes, very strange. If you see a few posts up I actually did get it to work the way I need it to. I called Epson and they had ne reset the printer settings through the system preferences. On my first try this did NOT work, however everything worked as it should in Preview (another image program) and since it did work there the Epson tech basically siad then it's not their problem - most likely adobe.
However just for the hell of it after I hung up, I tried resetting the printer settings again and sure enough it worked. I was able to change the color settings while using Photoshop to manage colors - namely I needed to print a B&W through the Advanced B&W setting. When they are grayed out I can't do this. But even while doing color I don't like that it's grayed out. I've been printing both color and B&W for the last 5-7 years with photosjop manageing colors. I know about double profiling and how to avoid it.
If this was by design from adobe, it deosn't make sense that I was able to access it a few weeks ago after resetting the printer settings. And if this was the case when did Adobe supposedly make the change?
I don't know what's different now, the only thing I can figure is that I had this issue sometime after I installed the lastest Epson print driver - hence the call to Epson... Maybe it's snow leopard weirdness, but I had snow leopard on my laptop and was always able to print sucessfully, but have not tried it since I got the new Mac Pro.
And the strange thing it works fine on other programs. I can have photoshop manage colors and they are not grayed out. Strange and frustrating. Time to set up the DR.
I guess I shoud uninstall PS and then try re-installing it.

Frist you have to tap and hold the image in the email to see the "Save" option. Selecting this will save the image to Camera Roll in Photos. Once in Camera Roll you can upload the image through the Drop Box app either automatically or manually, however you have this option setup.

Unable to see Shared Folder / Drop Box on wired LAN
I am unable to connect to another Mac on my wired LAN (Netgear wndr3700), and it is unable to connect to my machine. We cannot see each others’ Public Folder / Drop Box.
We can see each others Macs in the Shared section of the Finder’s sidebar, but trying to connect fails: “The server … may not exist or it is unavailable at this time…”
Both are running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard SL. No Windows machines on the LAN - so this should be AFP only.
We can see and connect to another Mac running 10.4.11 Tiger with no problem. BUT it is unable to connect to either 10.6.4 machine.
Firewall on both machines: On; File Sharing (AFP) set to “Allow incoming connections”; Stealth mode Enabled (toggling doesn’t change); “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” is Off; “Block all incoming connections” is Off. Some other apps and services are set to Block… (krb5kdc, numbed, smbd…) AppleFileServer is set to Allow.
Sharing: File Sharing Service only is On:
Hard Drive - Everyone - Read & Write
Users - Everyone - Read Only
~ (My Home Directory) - Everyone - Read Only
Public - Everyone - Read & Write
Drop Box - Everyone - Write only
Thanks for any suggestions.It isn't directly related to the firewall, I'm having the same problem between two up to date machines, and to be sure, I have disabled the firewall on both. however, If i connect using the connect to server dialogue, I get through just fine. I believe it could be a dns resolution problem.

Just tested, check in advanced network settings, and if you have any wins servers listed, remove them.
krb5kdc needs to be allowed to accept connections, for me it popped up in little snitch when it was authenticating. -
Drop Box folder in: user/public/Drop Box, how to delete it completely?
It might be kind of freaky, but the Drop Box folder in: user/public/Drop Box, how to delete it completely?, every time that i delete that folder and restart the system, it always appears, i just can't delete it!, why?. Absolutely, that i have already uninstalled the app with "appdelete".

I recently started using an iPad. I up loaded several apps. Evernote, cloudon, Goodreader, Drop Box and lots of others.
It crashes when I down load pictures and then try to use them. Converting a jpg to a pdf usually triggers a crash.
Is there a "hitch" in my "giddy up?"

Are you using the "Print to PDF" dialogue to convert your jpegs to pdf?
In addition to OT's test, you might also check, if using a different "Theme" for printing will avoid the crash:

You crashlog shows, that iPhoto crashes, when trying to draw the "Print" theme background. There could be a problem wit the installed themes. Can you convert any jpegs to pdf, not only the jpegs downloaded from your iPad?

Setup drop-box folder on external drive for multiple Macs
Greetings,
I have a classroom full of photography students who need to turn in 4GB folders with pictures in them so that the teacher can grade them. We've discussed various options for facilitating this, with the only feasible solution we can come up with being setting up an external 2TB MyBook and having the kids go up, plug in the firewire and xfer their folder to the drive (see requirements below for why this is the feasible solution). One snag with this is that I want to set it up so that when the drive mounts, it's mounted as a drop-box share to prevent plagiarism as well as kids deleting/messing with other kids' projects. The problem is that each computer has different profiles so when the drop-box is setup correctly on one computer, another computer is plugged in and the folders are wide open again. Since I obviously can't setup the permissions for each profile on each computer, what options do I have to set this up? I'm open to different ideas/different ways to accomplish this, but here are the requirements:
- Drop-box-like functionality. Students can basically "submit" work, but only the teacher can view the files.
- Preferably the device needs to be hardwired to the MBP using Firewire. USB is too slow and these are wireless laptops without benefit of having any ethernet jacks accessible to them. They are all connecting through an Airport Extreme and xferring 4GB files wirelessly is not an option due to class time restraints.
- This has to work across 30 laptops with multiple user profiles.
- If software is a suggestion, free and/or OSS is preferable since this problem will be mitigated next school year with implementation of iMacs and Xserves in this program.I would love how to do this as well. I actually tried moving a .mbox file out of ~/Library/Mailboxes/Mail and onto an external hard drive. Then I created an alias of the .mbox file and put it back into ~/Library/Mailboxes/Mail. No luck.

Drop Box folder in the Public folder not showing on the network
Hi everyone,
I am running a MacBook Pro 2010 running OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion. We have an office and multiple mac computers connected to our network. For us to transfer files we use the Drop Box folder inside the Public folder (We do not use the dropbox website/service). We would use the finder and click on the computer on the sidebar, open the Drop Box folder and drag files in with no hassel. However my Drop Box folder is not showing up when other users are trying to access my computer via the network.
My file sharing is on and I have attached an image with the settings I am using. I have compared these settings to other macs in the office that have a working Drop Box folder and they match. Hope you guys can help me.Contact Drop Box tech support.

What is the difference between the Drop Box and Public folders? Which is easier for getting files to other users?
all users have read access to your Public folder. so if you want to make something available fro everybody to view that's a good place to put it. but nobody but you can write to your Public folder or change anything in it. but everybody can drop files into your DropBox. they will no longer see or have access to the files dropped into the drop box but you will and you'll automatically get write rights to anything others put in your drop box.

I am under the impression (since I have never truly seen it) that when a folder becomes a drop box, there is a tiny arrow that appears on the folder icon such as this:
Mine is simply a plain folder. Does the icon appear when another user fills the drop box? Is there some way to access the OS icon library, and perhaps reset it? Sure it's a tiny problem, but I would like to fix it.You will see the arrow on your Drop Box icon if you look at it from another user's account. It's probably to warn you that you can't get anything back if you drop it there. You can with your own Drop Box folder.

Duplicate Drop Box Folder in Public Folder

I'm using Lion 10.7.2. The Drop Box folder appears twice in my Public folder:
in English = Drop Box
and in French, default system language = Boîte de dépôt
If I delete one of the folders, it reappers later on.

ask for hidden files to be shown—I use the superb Onyx utility
go to the Public folder
delete the [French] Boîte de dépôt folder
copy/paste the .Localise file into the [English] Drop Box

Repair Public folder and Drop Box
We have some Macs here connected via Ethernet/Router. Unfortunately on one of them there are problems now with files (created on one of the other Macs) which have been copied via the 'Public' folder or 'Drop Box'. Normally I can do everything with such files (from the other Macs), but now I always have to enter my password or change permissions when I want to f.e. edit/save/move/delete such a file. I remember I once ran a script which might have changed permissions. How can I get the original settings for these folders so that files will arrive in normal condition again?
