Configurator - supervised devices and switching computers

I manage a number of iPads through Configurator that we have supervised, and our company is making us upgrade computers.  Will I have to gather the iPads and un-supervise them then setup Configurator from scratch on the new computer or is there a way to transfer the profiles/etc?

In addition to backing up the iOS apps, there are other files, too.
See this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5194
or read this:
Note: If you use third-party backup software, make sure that the directory ~/Library/Application Support is not excluded from the backup.
To recover your Apple Configurator data from a Time Machine backup:
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu extra or System Preference pane.
Press Command-Shift-G and type: ~/Library/Application Support
Select the item "com.apple.configurator" in the backup with the appropriate date.
Click Restore.
If you are using third-party backup software, follow its instructions to restore ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.configurator.
You may also want to recover the following information from the backup of the same date:
~/Library/Keychains, to recover the Supervision Certificate and public and private keys. These will allow supervised devices to reconnect to the host computer.
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.configurator.plist, to restore Configurator settings and preferences.
Restoring data to a new Mac
If you restore the files and folders listed above to a new Mac, you can use it to manage devices supervised by the previous Apple Configurator Mac.
Additional Information
If you have supervised devices with Apple Configurator and you lose the Apple Configurator data files, the devices will still be supervised by the Mac that is running Configurator, but Apple Configurator will not be able to reinstall app backups or user data onto those supervised devices.
It is especially important to back up Apple Configurator information if you are using VPP codes. After a VPP code has been redeemed, only the Apple Configurator database keeps a record of what device that code was redeemed for. If this database is lost, and the app is deleted from the device, Apple Configurator will not be able to reuse the redeemed code in order to install the app, and you will need to purchase and redeem additional codes to replace the app on a device.

I make sure my iPad configurator machine has regular TimeMachine backups. A 500GB USB2 drive is enough to handle the initial startup disk backup & incrementals afterwards. It is important to have a dedicated machine for profile tasks, too. An Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or greater Mac Mini should suffice and is quite inexpensive.

  • What is the best way to set up devices and multiple computers for a family

I am trying to setup multiple devices and computers with home sharing.  I currently have 1 apple I'd for my wife and one for me.   I want to set up home sharing for us and my two kids.  We have two small laptops that stay at home and one that goes back and forth to work.
?1. Do i need to give up my apple I'd and share my wife's or vise versa or do I just enter it into my device iPhone or iPad when I want to load something from another library onto my device and the change I'd back.  Will the stuff still be there then when I switch back to my apple Id.     Can I switch like that.
    2. Should my kids each have their own apple I'd or just use the same one for multiple computers and devices.
    3. Does a network system outside of wifi need to be setup for the computers another wards have the computers linked on a network. Or can they just be in the same place at the same time with wifi.  Generic linksys Internet connection.

Unless you have 3rd-party apps allowing Windoze to read and write Mac OS Extended, or your Mac to read & write NTFS, your options are ExFat or Fat.   See #9 in Using Disk Utility.

  • Apple Configurator Supervised Device Error

I have a collection of ipads in a trolley.
They are in supervised mode and about 4 weeks ago the imac i use was able to update them. However I plugged the devices in today and I get the error that these are being supervised by a different machine, they only two changes that i know of are that the imac had had its ip address changed and the devices have had the ios update done via a manual update (dowload and install as you would with a personal device).
I dont watn to wipe these as they have a large number of purcahsed APPS via the VPP install onto those devices.
    Can anyone help???
    Regards
    Ralph Holland

I am having problems with a keybag error on our MacBook. I updated 50plus school iPads in our trolley with no real problems three weeks ago. One iPad was broken and had to be replaced. Last week I tried to configure this one iPad and it just doesn't work. There has been a new iOS update since the last time I ran updates with configurator. I think this part of the problem. Unless someone comes up with a better idea I'm just holding out for the next round of updates which means that for the time being we have one useless iPad.

  • HT204074 whats the difference between managed devices and authorized computers

What is the difference between the 10 managed devices and 5 authorized machines? What cant I do on the Unauthorized device that is a managed device?

This is my understanding of it.
Authorisation only applies to computers, not devices (iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches) - it allows you to play/use your iTunes downloads on that computer e.g. playing music, films etc., and to sync that content to a device. Up to 5 computers can be authorised at a time.
Having a device associated (or managed) with your account, which can be up to 10 computers and devices (and as each associated computer must also be authorised to your account it means that at most 5 of the 10 can be computers) means that you've used iTunes Match, automatic downloads and/or re-downloaded past purchases on them. Once a device or computer is associated to an account it will be tied to that account for 90 days. You can still sync content to a device without it being on the associated list.
A managed computer must also be an authorised computer, so you can't have one that is unauthorised but associated.

  • How do I transfer images and videos from Apple Configurator supervised device to a computer?

It seems that I can't do it even on the Mac (10.7) that supervised them. The Image Capture utility doesn't see any content on the device.

You did not configure PBR on the CSS since it does not have this function.
    You simply configured static routing.
As so, the CSS will route between the vlans.
If you want a firewall to protect every vlan from the other ones, you should have a one-armed design where the firewall does the routing between the vlans and the CSS is doing the loadbalancing.
    ie:
    ........vlan1
    ..........|
    .vlan2 ---FW----- CSS
    ..........|
    ........Vlan2
You'll need to do client nat on the css or implement some form of PBR on the firewall.
PBR means routing based on another factore than the destination ip address. In this case, it is necessary to route based on the source port.
That might be too complex, so an easier choice would be
    ..vlan1(ext).....vlan2(ext)
    ....|...............|
    ....+-------FW------+
    .............|
    ..........+-CSS-+
    ..........|.....|
    ........vlan3 vlan4
there is no protection between internal vlan but you don't need policy routing or client nat.

  • I wish to sync both my iPad and iPhone to multiple computers. I own both devices and both computers. Any advice?

I have both an iPhone 4 and an iPad 3. After being burned by a computer dying and a bad backup to an external, I want to back up to multiple computers. I own both. I can't seem to accomplish this, although I should be able to.

  • Palm devices and Apple computers

I was thinking about getting a palm T5 and I was wondering how well palm devices work with macs. Does the iCal sync ok and everything else (i know there is a palm desktop version for mac but i do not want to use that, i like ical to much) so does iCal sync fine and how about other apps, can they sync with my palm, Mail? Address book? etc....
    Thank you,
    TM

Thanks, Wade. I didn't know that.
I've actually already installed the Palm Desktop software, so does this mean I'm good to go?
I realize this sounds pretty clueless, but I must confess that's how I am when it comes to this new phone/pda. I've also never used iSync before. In fact, until you mentioned it, I didn't even know it was installed.
I just opened iSync for the first time and tried to sync up with my Treo via bluetooth, and it found the device (very cool!) but was unable to sync. I got a message saying "iSync can not connect to this device."
When I tried to pair the device using the bluetooth setup assistant, it found the device, but all the boxes were grayed out and it said that "there were no supported services found on your mobile pphone."
Any idea what I'm doing wrong.

  • How can I edit a "mobile" picture across a mobile device and TWO computers (phone, desktop and laptop)?

Works fine between the phone and 1 computer.  When I try to sync the second computer I get a message that there is already a Sync Catalog, and if I Start Syncing it will replace all previously synced data in Lightroom mobile.
I don't understand a second computer is any different than a second phone? or least I should be able to treat a second computer like a second phone with the same restrictions if any.

  • Trying to unsync and switch computers

I have always synced my iPhone 4 with my CPU at work, but I am trying to start over with my personal laptop.  I have my music library loaded into this laptop just as I did at work.  I am now trying to unsync my phone and just select certain genres from my library to sync.  When I plug my phone in, iTunes recognizes it, I click on it on the left side, then I uncheck "Sync Music".  Once I uncheck "Sync Music" it appears at the bottom that it will remove the music.  It takes away all the blue from the capacity graph.  I then click Apply, the sync begins and right before the end, the blue reappears on the capacity graph and all my music is still on my phone.  I can't get it off to choose a new group of songs and resync it.  Can anyone help me?  Thanks.

Whenever you sync to a new iTunes library iTunes will erase all iTunes media (apps, music, etc.) off the phone and replace it with the media in the iTune library you are syncing with.  If all of your media is in your new iTunes library this isn't an issue as it will simply be synced back to your phone.  If it isn't, then you will lose your data unless you take special steps to preserve it.  You may want to review this article: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.

  • I plug in a supervised device and it says "Required app is missing"

Any ideas why we are receiving this message?

I haven't seen this message before, but if I were to guess I'd think that maybe an app that was on the original backup was removed. Have you compared the app list from the problem iPad to the non-problem iPads?
If there isn't any data that needs to be saved on the problem iPad, you may want to restore the Supervised backup to remedy the issue. But I'm curious to know why the error came up in the first place.
If you find a solution, please post it. I'd like to know the answer!

  • Must a Managed and Supervised Device Have an Apple ID In Order To Use VPP via MDM?

I'm using Apple Configurator to supervise devices and Mavericks Server Profile Manager for MDM. I am able to push a VPP invite to the device, but after tapping Continue, nothing happens. From what I've read so far, I think I have to create a throwaway Apple ID for all my managed devices. Is this true? I really want to be able to push apps to iPads and iPhones out in the field. Thanks!

    Hi,
Your assumption is corrct. Each device needs it's own Apple ID. To create an Apple ID you need a working email address.
Also the Apple's systems only allow for about 10 ID's to be made per day from a domain/IP so in order to create a large number of ID's you will need to contact your device provider to setup a whitelist period with Apple. They tend to only allow this for class sets so if each device has a unique owner that owner will need to create the ID individually.

  • Can you reuse a redemption code installed on a supervised device via mdm?

I know that if you use a supervised device and install paid apps with apple configurator via vpp redemption codes, you can recover the redemption codes by removing the apps or unsupervising the device on the same machine in apple configurator.
However, I want to install the apps via MDM (meraki).  If the devices are supervised in Apple Configurator, can I still recover the redemption codes for reuse using configurator (or better yet removing them via MDM)?
Or in short, is there any way to recover vpp redemption codes of apps installed via MDM?

You can always download the app again over the air using the Apple ID and password that redeemed the code. But as far as using the code again, no this is not possible right now.

  • Configuring waas devices nid help

i'm new in configuring waas devices. and i have many questions.
basically our network is 6513 connected to 6509 via a multilink 4xE1(see attached). with multiple VLANs. we used 612 for core and edge, and 512 for cm.
i have configured the core, edge and cm.
    my 1st question is:
    1. is it correct that i connected the core_wae to VLAN 144 port then connected the waas_cm to VLAN 136 port?
    2. in configuring wccp on the core_router, what will be the interface where traffic will be intercepted from when leaving the data center network toward the WAN? will it be int VLAN 136? because our waas_cm is connected to VLAN 136.
    3. and the interface where traffic will be intercepted from when entering the data center network from the WAN, will be our multilink 4xE1?
    4. and the have created a VLAN for redirection of core_wae VLAN 144. is this correct?
    5. in cofiguring wccp on the core_wae router-list. i input the ip add of VLAN 144 in the 6509. is this correct?
because the first time i run the waas devices(after configuring the WCCP) it resulted to high cpu utilization of the core_router. from what i remembered it was "input packets" that has high utilization.
    rgds,
    ben

    Ben,
Here are the answers to your questions:
    1. The CM can reside anywhere, so long as it has IP connectivity to the WAEs it is managing. Your placement is fine.
    2. Yes, VLAN 136. It's fine that the CM is also on that subnet. Think of the CM as just another host system.
    3. Yes, it should be the logical multilink interface where other L3 configuration (IP address, etc.) resides.
    4. Yes, the WAEs performing acceleration should reside on a separate subnet.
    5. Yes.
When configuring WCCP on a hardware-based platform such as the Catalyst, make sure you configure WCCP as follows:
    - L2 Forwarding (configured using the 'l2-redirect' command on the WAE)
    - Mask Assignment (configured using the 'mask-assign' command on the WAE)
    - Inbound Redirection
    Thanks,
    Zach
