Configurator updating iPad's OS
Hi Guys
Has anyone else found Configurator is updating the OS on iPads that are already running the latest version?
We have a number of clients running Profile Manager and Apple Configurator and in most cases if the iPad is up to date then it skips that step when supervising, on a couple of servers running the latest OS and Configurator it reinstalls the OS on every iPad which is slowing the process down considerably.
I've restarted all the services and the server and still get the same results, one time it didn't update the iPad and skipped passed that step but the very next time it reverted back to installing the OS.
I can't see anything thats causing it as just seems to be random servers were doing it, hopefully someone has found a solution to it as it will save a lot of time if I can get it working correctly.

As when installing a major OS update on your computer, there is no guarantee there won't be any problems or anything lost, which is the reason for maintaining a backup of all important data which sohuld be updated immdiately before doing so.
All iTunes content on your iPad should be in your iTunes library on your computer. All photos on your iPad transferred from your computer should remain on your computer. Photos/videos in the iPad's Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. This should be done before installing an iOS update if not already done previously and on a regular basis. Contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks, and notes are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer so this data should be avaialble on your computer as well.
Before installing the update, import photos/videos from the iPad's Camera Roll with your computer and sync your iPad with iTunes to update your iPad's backup along with all other data that is kept synced with the supported apps on your computer.

I have tried my best to update or restore my iPad 2 v4.3.1 but it keeps saying "Unable to restore/update iPad. An unknown error occured. (error #3194)." What should i do? I have downloaded and installed the latest iTunes and my system is running under Administrator's privilege.

Error 1004, 1013, 1638, 3014, 3194: These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Check security software. Ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow this article for assistance with security software. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service -
I need to configure my IPad for the co WLAN , The advise i got is to send the certification through exteral mail to the IPad and install them but this option cannot go in my case as the network availbe now is co WIFi . I tried to share the certification from my microsfot laptop through itunes but i cannot install them in IPad as there is no application can open them . Can any one advise me what is the applicant can be used to run this certifications ( Cer files ) in IPad .
If you are running OS X 10.5.8 as your profile says, that is the problem as you need to be on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard, or above). If you do upgrade, after installation do a software update from the Apple menu so that the OS and iTunes gets updated to the latest version for SLeopard. Updated iPad to ios5, now getting error message
Just updated iPad to ios5 today. Now when plugging into my wired Apple iPad Keyboard Dock, I get the "accessory not supported for charging" message. Advice please.
First of all: before you upgrade, always make a backup of your device in iTunes!
The following happens when upgrading to iOS 5 (this is different from previous system upgrades!):
The installer creates automatically a restore file
Then a clean system is installed on your device, all your data will be removed. Don't panic, this will be ok later on.
When the os is updated you get a few configuration questions (i.e. language settings).
At one point you're given a choice:
configure device as a new device
restore from iCloud
restore from iTunes
Unless you want to start all over, choose the third option.
All your settings will be restored at first and your device will restart.
Now comes the tricky bit: After restart your device will work fine as if the process is finished. i.e. you can send and recieve mails. At this point you will not see the apps you had installed, also you're photo's and movies will not be on your device. (I was fooled buy this one at first too)
Do not disconnect your device or quit iTunes! In the background iTunes is still restoring the rest of your data. (Switch to iTunes and you'll see the progress.) This can take some time, depending on how much apps you had installed. One by one you'll see apps appearing on your device. You can't use the untill the whole restore is finished.
When all apps are back, your photo's and video's will be restored.
So please be patient. It took me more than an hour to get everything back in place.
The only small annoyance: there are new Apple-apps added to the homescreen. They're 'pushed' to the second screen by your own homescreen apps, leaving your second screen almost empty. Now you only have to rearrange the apps on the second screen.
If all turns out bad, because you unplugged your device too early, go back to your restore file you made yourself before upgrade. (You did do that, didn't you?) and start the process all over. -
Wont get past "configuring updates stage 3 of 3 0%" and wont let me log into computer..HELP!!!

i kept getting a vista spyware alert saying i had 34 infected files and wouldn't stop and i also tried updating some things on my laptop while i updated to the new internet explorer 9. around 12noon today i rebooted my laptop to get all the updates to work and i got this configuring updates screen and was like ok. it kept going. it does it for a while, shuts down and restarts and goes back i didnt think anything was wrong made it to stage 3 and wont stop and move on from 0%. its now 10pm and its been doing it all day. ive tried shutting it down and rebooting myself but no matter what i do, it wont let me access my computer to do anything. i have avast virus protection but it said it was unable to move viruses to chest i pressed repair and it said it was postponed until next reboot so i did it this morning and figured its taking so long maybe because its trying to repair them but im sure it doesnt take 10 hours...im extremely upset. someone please help. and also, anyone know how i can get the viruses out? i dont have money for a better protection right now so im using my moms computer but she works on it so its hard. hp said they cant help because my warrenty is up, was a 1 year warrenty, got laptop in 2008 and warrenty expired in 2009. please help me.After installing updates from Windows Update, you may get into a Reboot loop where you machines gets to “configuring updates 3 of 3. x% complete” then freezes or reboots.
Solution:
1a. Boot from the Windows System Repair Disc and choose the repair option in the lower left hand corner, choose System Restore, and select a Restore Point predating the attempted installation of the updates.
1b. If you don't have the DVD and the Vista/W7 came preinstalled on the machine, boot to the Recovery Environment using F8 at the HP logo during boot, choose "repair your computer" from the list, let RE load and do a system restore from there.
If restore fails, load the recovery environment command prompt and enter:
Del C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
exit recovery environment and restart the pc, you may get 3 of 3 again but be patient, the desktop should load. Create a manual restore point and Turn off Windows Automatic updates until you can figure out which update caused the loop.
If you get it booting again:
You may be infected
Follow the order given below to disinfect your PC
1.) On a PC that is Not infected, Make a boot AV disc then boot from the disc on the Infected PC and scan the hard drive, remove any infections it finds, I prefer the Kaspersky disc myself. The New 2010 Kaspersky disc can update the AV dat files if you are connected to the internet at the time of scan and is suggested to update before the scan.

2.) Then boot into Windows:
Install free MBAM, run the program and go to the Update tab and update it, then go to the Scanner Tab and do a quick scan, select and remove anything it finds.

3.) When MBAM is done install SAS free version, run a quick scan, remove what it automatically selects.

These last 2 are not AV softwares like regular Anti Virus Software, they are on demand scanners that only scan for nasties when you run the program and will not interfere with your installed AV, these can be run once a day or week to ensure you are not infected. Be sure you update them before each daily-weekly scan. -
Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"
I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. ALL payments received are gone! ALL Business contacts and emails ARE GONE! All my company, personal email accounts and settings ARE GONE!
What am I supposed to do now? In 6 hours I have to get on the road and conduct business with a empty blank factory out of the box iPad. How am I supposed to know who owes me money or who has paid their bills Apple? All of my meetings and calendar dates are GONE!
Everything was supposed to be backed up and restored after the update!
Question???WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS UPDATE WIPE OUT ALL SETTINGS AND APPS ON THE iPAD??? All the other updates left everything on the iPad intact and ONLY upgraded the IOS,and when it was done everything was still there.
Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):

I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key! -

i want to know how to update ipad 2 to ios 5.1Since this is posted twice, the other post of the question, Barry, says iOS 4.3 is current iOS version...so the way to update is via iTunes on a computer. As Barry says, once a version of iOS at or above 5.0 is installed the update can be done wireless.

Updated iPad 2 last night. All movies (9) on my iPad can no longer be viewed. The movie plays but the photos and scene selection are blank. How do I fix this
Quit the app and restart the iPad.
In order to quit or close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Try the videos app again. -
Updated iPad mini to iOS 7.
I had purchased Pages & Keynote & then later purchased Numbers also on the iPad so I could keep a file synced w my Mac, now that I'm doing more & more on the iPad mini so not using the Mac all the time.
I was dismayed to get a message when I tried to open a contact file that I use to keep track of biz prospects that said if I opened it, I would Jo longer be able to keep it synced w the version on the Mac until I updated to Maverick. This caught me totally by suprise. If I had had even a hint that ths would happen, I would have held off updating to iOS 7 on the iPad mini. (Which I'm typing on now)
Is there any way around this? I do use Time Machine to keep my Mac backed up regularly.
Have the bugs been worked out of Mavericks?
I've read that the iWork's apps & maybe some others have been dumbed down to make the sync work so some features are lost.
Does most apps work fine w Mavericks? I guess I should check to make sure that Parallels 8 works w it. Don't use it much any more, but do have Windows 7 as a virtual machine. I'd like to retain that w out having to pay to upgrade as I just upgraded not that long ago.
Also do the apps work ok & sync well if using iOS 7 on iPad & Mavericks on MacBookPro (mid 2012 model--although purchased May 2013).
Back in May, I also moved to Portland, OR not realizing there is only 1 Apple store inconveniently located downtown. It also doesn't seem to have as full offering of classes as the store in Tigard which are further away. Before moving, I had 2 Apple stores w in. 10-15 min drive. & I used zone to One for 3 years. I purchased it again just before my move after spilling water on my old MacBookPro & ending up buying a new one. But haven't even activated it yet. But thinking of looking into ging to an apple store to get help.OK, I decided to upgrade to Mavericks. 1st I checked to see if Parallels 8 woudl work w it. It said yes, but upgrade parallels 8 1st so I did that (& then realized I should update virus def & run Windows updates also. Don't use it very much 180 days ago it said).
Then saw some reports of mail not working so well so decided to clean out a lot of un-needed emails on my Mac. Also ran updates to Mountain Lion.
Then closed everything & shut down. Left it off for a few min to clear out any left over electronic garbage & rebooted. Opened App store & clicked the Mavericks free download. Almost immediated it gave me error message & suggested doing it from the Purchased section.
Ok, I tried downloading it there. 2-3 times got same almost immediate error message.
Then, I think it was after disconnecting external HD & printer I tried again & it was looking good w download. It was fluctuating between 40-45 min time remaining & showing almost 500 mb downloaded when I got the error message again.
btw, I also got an error message when running Windows update. There was an unknown error code when I tried updating Service Pack 1 (which it showed I needed, although I'm thinking that is kind of strange since I've had Windows 7 on a MacBookPro since shortly after I bought the original MacBookPro in April 2010. (Spilled water on it last May & Apple store said it would need expensive repair so bought this replacement that they used my Time Machine backups to install everything on. This was right as I was getting ready to move & I haven't yet found the old one to see if maybe it would work. It should be in one of my boxes).
So, if it is having this much trouble just getting it installed I'm kind of afraid to go ahead. Wondering why some report it works fine & a lot of others saying no.
I very frustrated since I just want to be able to have the functionality I had to be able to sync Numbers between my iPad & my Mac. -
have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!
The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here. Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8. -
First post I have just updated iPad to latest iOS and now I can't sync my music in iTunes form Mac which is running latest version it starts but stops straight away and gives no info I've tried with wifi off and on turned everything off and back on but nothing as any one got any idea please ?

Updated iPad 2 to ios7 - Now all my music has disappeared..
I'm sure other people have had this problem but I don't seem to be able to find an answer so I'm gonna annoy everyone by probably asking this again.
Updated iPad 2 to ios7 weeks ago (whenever it came out), didn't seem to be any problems, listened to music only a few days ago, seemed grand, now hundreds of song gone, boom, no reason.
I know people will say 'Just hook it up to iTunes and resync yer library' but I can't do that. Unlike most people I don't have my iTunes set to sync everytime I connect to it. I have it set to 'Manually manage my music and videos', I hate being forced to do stuff! I don't have iCloud actived, see no point in it. So my music library on my MacPro just has a few songs in it, I never keep them on my MacPro, I use my iPad for music (or did before the unexpected cull).
If I connect to my MacPro, and click on "On this iPad" in iTunes, it's saying I have 1822 songs. It lists them all as if they are still there but every one of them, apart from about a hundred, have little exlaimation marks in circles beside them.
I understand that I can probably track down all the songs and put them on again, but it took me ages the first time round. I don't have that kinda time, especially when I wasn't the cause.
Anyone ever find out what causes this? And was a solution every put out there? Or am I going to have to head up in my attic and dust off all the old CDs again?Did you actually sync the music to your device? If it is disappearing when your laptop is turned off it sounds to me as if you somehow set up streaming and didn't sync it.

My newly updated iPad 2 wants an email for the apple ID. My apple ID is not an email address. How can I get past the set-up screen?
I can't change my Apple ID. It would mess all my stuff up.To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I updated ipad 4.3 to io7 but now when I go to set up it keeps asking me to restore - I have done this from itunes several times but it still gets stuck at this point in set up - help!
All media and apps should be in iTunes on the computer. Simply select the content desired to sync to the device and sync it.
FYI, backups have never included media or apps.
