Configure a new 27" iMac for gaming help

My gaming computer right now is a first generation version 1.1 Mac Pro from 2006 That is more than a little long in the tooth despite having a video card upgrade to ATI 4870 in 2010 playing the beta of Elder Scrolls Online this month it chugs at just less than 30fps in to 1920x1200 it drops to under 10fps at times.
So it is time for a new computer as it is passing into the realm of no longer being able to keep up to date and due to its mother board design it is limited to osx 10.7 and under bootcamp win XP is the newest it will run
I am something of a mac diehard having bought my first Mac March of 1984 and though I no longer work on my PC (retired) I enjoy playing computer games for a few hours each day. Looking forward to Elder Scrolls Online in a few days and enjoying the improved flow of osx games seen over the last few years (but I do play games like skyrim and the fallouts under bootcamp and XP sp3.
So my  target system seems to be a new iMac 27"  at just under $3,000
Specifications
3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X8GB
3TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
Accessory Kit and of course a few thunderbolt to FireWire 800 converters
while I doubt I will get the 8 years between systems that this old pro got me it should be fine for the next 3 to 5 years
A new Mac Pro no longer makes sense as I no longer do the solid modeling work that justified a pro back in 06 also the new pro uses workstation graphics cards that are not optimal for games
So run with the antique Mac Pro 1.1 at medium to high graphics ( low in crowded areas ) with most of the other graphics options turned off at best for the next year or blow the tax refund on a high optioned 27" iMac
I thought of trying to find a last version Mac Pro tower used on eBay as that would mean I could just swap over all my FireWire 800 stuff and not have buy the thunderbolt converters but I do not have a good feel as to how good the last version Mac Pro will be as a gaming computer hence my question here and I will also post this over in the Mac Pro forum if it is thought to be a good idea to go with the find a last years Mac Pro idea
Thoughts?

Of course! And XP is no longer supported after this spring this is what I am stuck running on my no longer upgradable Mac Pro. I will of course install the windows 7 pro 64 sp1 that I run on my 2009 mac book pro under boot camp.
Either I find a good last model Mac Pro (I think September 13 is the last version) or I go with the 27" iMac outlined above. But either way it is about  a $3,000 spend, all I am seeing on the refurb list at the apple store here of late are 2012 vintage pros, so I guess if I want a last version pro it will be eBay.... That always bothers me as I have not had the best luck getting stuff there.
And that is why I am asking about the loaded iMac 27 as a gaming machine

  • IMac for Gaming using Win XP Pro

    Early 2006 I purchased an iMac 2.0 w/ 2G RAM using x1600 ATI card w/ beta boot camp using XP Pro for gaming purposes.
    Now I want to expand my horizons a bit to a new iMac with the same idea as above.
    My gaming includes Battlefield 2, COD4, and soon Crysis. So here is the system I want:
    iMac 3.06 w/ nvidia 8800 GS which I read is NOT the 8800 but some other nvidia card. I want to expand to 4G RAM, BUT replacing all the RAM with either Crucial or Kingston for Dual Channel. Will XP Pro be stable w/ 4G dual channel? Will this system utilize DX 10. w/ the nvidia card on this Mac? If I get Crysis, I want to be able to set everything on HIGH. Are there any Driver problems that I should be aware of?

  • New desktop computer for gaming as well as normal stuff

    I am looking for a new desktop computer that I could use for gaming--such as League of Legends and anything else I might find in the coming months/years, as well as eventually being able to hook up ps3 games eventually, but probably not right away. I am looking for suggestions on what specific systems to get and/or what specifications for a desktop i should be looking at. I am entirely new at this and could use help from every direction. Any help is appreciated

    The biggest things you need to look for are CPU(for gaming and your budget look for Core i7's or AMD x6's), RAM - most gaming computers come with 6-8GB now, and a discrete video card. I am partial to nVidia chips, but an ATI card will work just the same.
    As for brand, I prefer ASUS for gaming machines as they do have a gaming line.
    Are you going to be looking for a package, monitor, tower, etc? Or do you already have a monitor?

    Just at a quick glance, this is a decent system to kinda base what you're looking for off of. The CPU is decent, good amount of RAM. The graphics could be a bit stronger, though you could always upgrade that.

  • New Mac pro for gaming?

    Well I bought a MacPro last week and after talking to Apple I am returning it to get a new one. So here's my question:
    I would like to use it for gaming as well, so what video card would be best? 2xGeforce or 1 of the new ATI cards
    Didn't know which one would be best. I've seen the clock speeds on the ATI and they look great, but been using nVidia for gaming for quite some time and they've always out performed ATI. (At least in the PC world) This is the only thing preventing me from ordering the new one. Also, should I wait for the reviews to come out before ordering?

    I was concerned that you had to to the exchange now.
    The 8800GT $279 from '08 is fine for games in Windows, or get a PC card of your dreams.
    But I see lots of PC users happy with ATI 4870.

  • Is the New Macbook good for gaming?

    I am about to buy a new MacBook Pro. I was planning on getting the MacBook Pro without retina with the i7, 1tb HDD and 8gb of ram. I am wondering if this will work for gaming. I am going to bootcamp with Windows 7 as soon as I get it. Is this a good idea or will I have problems with graphics or any other issues?

    Okay, so here's my opinion on this as I have the MacBook you're planning to purchase. I have the 13 inch which means without the graphics card.
    It's a decent gaming machine. It's okay for gaming here and then.
    As OGELTHORPE mentioned, Mac's aren't meant for gaming. The machine will just get really hot, and won't give you the best performance.
    Now as for me, I came from a 2008 sony vaio. The increase in performance was amazing, but for me.
    So, go with a macbook air, and then build your own desktop. It's going to be much more beneficial. Although seeing your budget though, you won't be able to build a super powerful gaming PC, rather a standard, with simple graphics card gaming machine.
    However, it's better than buying a MacBook Pro and gaming on it in my opinion.

  • Running Windows 7 on my new i7 MBP for Gaming

    Hey guys!
    just got my new MBP 15" i7. I want to run Steam on it for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and it only currently runs on windows. I have a fresh copy of Windows 7 here and can install it but have heard that if i run windows, its just as capable as getting a virus as a PC which im not to happy about. But if i just open steam, and run steam to play mw2 will that leave me open for viruses and such, there will be no web browsing/torrents or anything else just steam and games.
    Also is it better to install 32bit or 64bit onto this mac.
    thanks in advance,
    Chase.

    The 2GB is a problem and bug with Apple and Mac Pro (though surprised it wasn't fixed in 2008) with using 32-bit. An i7 MBP
    Most newer Macs now (2009) do get access to more than 2GB but it was very very commonly reported. But isn't normal.
    Of course having 512MB video and other things, and the fact is Windows x64 has better memory management and security.
    MS offering malware protection could and was seen as taking over 3rd party products and seen as a threat. The data though that MS collects can help, and MSSE is very lite on its feet, barely know its there or runs unlike most that are 'in your face' and need constant care and feeding and alerts.
    As for firewall, I leave it, plus router is your 1st line firewall anyway.
    I used Norton 360v4 when Windows 7 Beta/RC and that was pre-MSSE. I would not touch it today, save your $$$, it is a nuisance, but check their support Community of course.

  • IMac for gaming?

    I am considering buying a shiny new iMac. Will it run games well?
    I am concerned about the 256m video card. Some new games coming out (e.g. Age of Conan) are recommending 512m cards.
    I am not too worried about current games but I want the thing to last me a few years. Am I gimping myself with that 256m card?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated

    I just finished off COD4 and Crysis running XP under bootcamp and they ran fine. The only drawback is that I had to reduce some of the shading and the resolution a bit. Other than that it worked like a champ. I've yet to find any games I like for the Mac end so I have no experience with native Mac games. If you want the best quality rendering and frame rate possible then no, this is not the machine you want.

  • New 27" iMac for FCE4

    Hi there,
    Wow, the new iMac has just came put ...
    I am getting tired that my macbook pro (2.53 GHz i5 core with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256M) takes so long to render the HD clips:
    Can I know between these two:
    _*(1) 27-inch: 3.2GHz DUAL CORE*_
    3.2GHz Intel Core i3
    2560-by-1440 resolution
    ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB
    and
    _*(2) 27-inch: QUAD CORE 2.8GHz*_
    2.8 Intel Core i5
    2560-by-1440 resolution
    ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB
    which one is faster to render the files in FCE4 ?
    Btw, has Apple solve the problem with their 27" iMac ? I heard that they have some issue for the previous 27" iMac, has that been solved ?
    Thanks

    MartinR wrote:
    You will see an improvement in rendering times compared to your existing MBP.
    You will probably only see marginal differences between the two iMacs you listed (the processor affects rendering times more than anything else, and both models have plenty of RAM). The i3 is slightly faster but the i5"s slightly slower speed is compensated by being a quad processor. On the other hand, it may take a future release of FCE to take full advantage of the quad processor. In any event, YMMV. If you have your doubts between the two, for the mere $300USD price difference, go with the i5 model as 'future proofing'.
    Some users had issues with a slight yellowish cast on part of the 27" iMac screen when it was first introduced. The incidence seems to have dropped off significantly from the time they were first released.
    Thanks Martin,
    In that case, I will consider buying the i5.
    But is it advisable to increase the RAM from 4GB to 8GB ? Will it increase the speed in rendering the files in FCE ?
    Another question about this new iMac, I noticed it comes with the default Magic Mouse, is it easy to drag a clip form the Viewer window to the Canvas window using the Magic Mouse ?
    Thanks

  • New bee looking for applescript help with text edit app

    I have a huge text files (20+) , I want to find a list of words like weather, farmers, ploughing. I want to find these words one at a time, as my text file is 250+ Mb in size.
    I want applescript to count the how many times each word appears in the text.
    Paste that occurrence of word into an spreadsheet file in a row named after text file , and in a column named weather, farmers, ploughing.
    Please help.
    Thanks much.
    CF
    PS so far I can open the text files with applescript, that is about the extent of my ability in programing.
    Message was edited by: coldfusions onco

    For a file of that size, you would need to use some shell utilities to get decent performance. To count words, the following script breaks up the text into words, then counts the number of times the specified word is found (a dictionary file is used as an example, so the match is equivalent to 'contains'):
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    font-weight: normal;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #DAFFB6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set theFile to "/usr/share/dict/web2" -- a 2.5MB list of words
    set someWords to {¬
    {theWord:"weather", theCount:0}, ¬
    {theWord:"farmers", theCount:0}, ¬
    {theWord:"ploughing", theCount:0}}
    repeat with anItem in someWords
    set aWord to quoted form of theWord of anItem
    try -- break up into individual words, then search and count
    set theCount of anItem to (do shell script "tr -cs '[:alpha:]' " & quoted form of linefeed & " < " & theFile & " | grep -ic " & aWord) as integer
    end try
    end repeat
    someWords
    </pre>

  • Card reader not recognizing CF in leopard on new 24" Imac.. HELP PLEASE!!

    I have a new 6-in-1 card reader that my new IMac (Leopard, 24", 2.4gHz, 2gb RAM) won't fully recognize. The thing is, it recognizes it if I put an SD card in it, but not a CF card. (This is annoying because one of my cameras uses CF). The stranger thing is that if I boot XP in parallels on this IMac, XP recognizes both the SD and CF cards just fine in the reader, and the files import flawlessly. This makes me think the computer, the connection, the card, and the reader are not the problem. My Macbook also recognizes the CF card without any problems, so it's not just that the card reader isn't fully Mac compatible. Any ideas? It's super annoying and I'd rather not buy a different card reader when it seems so close to working... I can import photos through parallels and XP, but that's annoying and there should be a way to get this fancy machine to see the CF card in the reader...

    Not being able to transfer photos from CF cards using my USB2 card reader, I connected my Canon D60 camera to my MacBook using the original Canon cable. The Mac doesn't see that either and there appear to be no relevant rivers on the Canon site. Is there a problem with USB2 under Leopard? Is Apple aware of or working on this?

  • Please help me configure a new 8core for FCP

    PLEASE HELP A PC GUY MOVE OVER...
    I need to configure a new 8-core for FCP mainly. I need to keep the expense reasonable so dont want to spend extra $$$ if i dont have to.
    I edit files from many different camera's these days. Mostly weddings & demos.
    I want to go with an 8 core either Two 2.26GHz, OR 2.66GHz? Is the 2.2 fast enough with FCP?
    How much ram do i need?
    Do I need to stripe 2 sata drives together for the video?
    Which video card?
    Can you recommend any other software/hardware that will help me?

    Either will work fine.
    sarecco wrote:

    As much as you want but 8G will be adequate. More might not help significantly.
    sarecco wrote:

    Depends on the video you're trying to use or if you want to do 9 camera multiclips. Maybe.
    sarecco wrote:
    Which video card?
    The stock 4870 is the gold standard for Motion; the current rev of FCP does not care much about the GPU but we are hoping future revs will use the card directly.

    Umm, withotu knowing what you need to do, of course not.

  • IMacs are good for gaming

    Im thinking about buying a 21'' Imac for gaming and other stuff, would it be good for playing some games?

    Buy a dedicated gaming box, instead.
    Better for gaming than a Mac and less expensive.
    The 21 inch screen iMac models won't cut it for gaming if you need high resolution, fast refresh graphics.
    The 21 inch screen iMac models only come with a 512 VRAM GPU.
    Not enough GPU power for high end gaming with high resolution graphics requirements.

  • Sound on new Intel Imac died

    Yesterday I set up a brand new Intel iMac for a client. Everything was working perfectly. Less than an hour later she calls to tell me that the sound has died. Sure enough, you can barely hear any sound from the internal speakers. Setting the volume to max does nothing. Even the start up chime is severely muted.
    Before I left the client the sound was fine. I had restarted the machine and got a loud healthy startup chime. We sent some messages from Mail.app and the jet whooshing sound was also clear.
    After I had left, the client called complaining that a game she was running (Freeverse's 3D Bridge, PowerPC only) had frozen the machine. After force quitting the program, she called back and reported the sound had died.
    The Mac in question is an Intel iMac that was purchased last week. It has only the stock RAM (512 MB) and had beedn updated to 10.4.6. I took the following troubleshooting steps:
    1. Rebuilt permssions
    2. Trashed all sound prefs.
    3. Rest PRAM
    4. Launched the Audio Midi setup and tried re-setting those prefs.
    5. Attached a different keyboard and external speakers.
    6. Ran the Hardware test (came up clean)
    7. Erased and re-installed 10.4.4
    Nothing in the list above has helped. I'm going to attempt to update to 10.4.6 letter tonight. I've done a quick search of the forums, but none of the suggested solutons have helped.
    Any, ANY help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
    Sincerely,
    Matt

    Do the best thing you can do to a brand new machine
    with problems---take it back.
    Losing system sounds is one thing (and easy enough to
    troubleshoot on your own), but losing your startup
    chime is a bit worrisome as this in itself is a
    diagnostic signal that tells you everything is ok
    with the system. Losing it may be a symptom of a
    deeper problem.
    You have a 14 day return policy and a full warranty
    on the machine so bring it back and let them handle
    it.
    No sense "troubleshooting" this much on a brand new
    machine, if you ask me...
    My thanks to everyone who responded. This has been an extremely frustrating experience all around.
    Tim:
    Thanks for the tip; I'd never even heard of the SMC before. Unfortunately it didn't work. The problem shows up in any other account.
    d-mo:
    I agree with you. The iMac is a lemon and will have to go back. The irritating thing is that the stupid machine was working when I left the client's. Oh, well.
    Again, thanks to everyone for the help.
