Configure Adobe Reader search function

Platform : Linux i686 or x86_64
OS : Red Hat 5
Adobe Reader 9.4.2
When the Search window opens there are two radio buttons; the second button "All PDF Documents in" and by default goes to the users home directory.  I want to modifiy the default behavior to choose a network file system location, is this possible?

I'm afraid that you've posted your  question in the wrong forum. This  one is for the now-retired desktop  application for Acrobat.com, not  Adobe Reader.
You should get more informed responses if you post in the Adobe Reader (not Acrobat.com) forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_reader_forums/adobe_reader

  • Adobe Reader Search function fails

@@I'm using Adobe Reader Version 11.0.10 under Windows 7 64-Bit SP1 with all actual updates. When i try to search any word or Phrase of contained in the text of a specific PDF File, then the search Fails. It does not come up with the search item i have keyed in. I did not misspell the search item and it is definitely contained in the text, but the search function does not find it. i am absolutely surethat the search item is in text Format and it is contained in the PDF file, because i can Access and search it when i open this PDF file on an iPad for instance. there it works, but not in my Windows envioenment.
I guess that this problem will not be completely new for you, because other users are discussing this Problem in the Internet as well.
Can you help me with an answer and hopefully with a recommendation on how to overcome this Problem.
    thanks in advance and
    Kind regards
    Guenther
    p.s.:
sorry, i am new on thjis platform... how  when aproximatrely does one get an answer here?

    Hello Pat,
i followed your advise and have used the link contained in point 3 of
your recommendations --- for reference see your response as appended
    below (https://cloud.acrobat.com/).
So, in case i made no mistake (?), then you can access the PDF file we
are talking about when you follow this link here:
    https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/0f9d2ce4-b4b9-4223-8fd2-723441d7d2ab***
This PDF file contains a description of an olympus camera. When you open
this PDF file please go to page 6.
Directly under the picture on top of the page (which shows a dark blue
car driving from left to right) you can read the word "Mitziehmodus"
(without parantheses). This german word is one of those search items
which the PDF search function of my PDF reader installation does not
find. There are many other words the search function does not find as
well, but let us use this word (Mitziehmodus) as an example to
demonstrate the malfunction as i experience it on my pc.
Meanwhile i have installed a completely new windows-system 7 from
scratch. The PDF reader (11.0.10) is currently the only installed
software. I made this windows 7 installation only to assure that there
is no other software eventually influencing the search function. But the
search function fails again when searching for this word "Mitziehmodus".
One remark still to your statements concerning accented characters.
Character like ä, ö, ü or ß are quite normal characters in writing
german language text. But these characters can not be found also! In
general it does not make much sense to serach for a single character (at
least in my understanding). Searching for ä or ö or ü results in finding
something completely meaningless. But this behaviour shows additionally
that there is something wrong with the search function as it ist
    implemented in Adobe Reader.
In general i am convinced that this PDF file will be correct ,
because i can search any search item and find correct search results
when i access this file on my iPad regardless in what so ever combination.
i hope that you can access the problem PDF file following the link i
    sent you above.
And i would be happy wehen you could find thze reason for my search
    problems.
thank you so far. i appreciate to heare from you soon.
    kind regards
    Günther

  • Adobe Advanced Search Function not woking

The Advanced Search Function has stopped working. I use mac os x 10.6.8. I deleted and reinstalled adobe reader 10.1.2 and still the same problem: nothing appears when I click on the Advanced Search function. I'd welcome suggestions on how to fix this. Thank you.

Did you try the shortcut for Advanced search - option + shift +F. Do you not get the search window even then ?

  • Adobe Reader Search problem

Since Adobe Reader 9 we have a problem with the "find" (search the content of pdf files). Sometimes it works fine and sometimes the search result highlights incorrect words.
We use now Adobe Reader 9.1.2 but had the same problem on 9.1.0. It seems that the count of results is correct, but not the highlightet word. The files have the PDF-version 1.4.
Do anyone know the problem or have an idea whats wrong?

The Problem was not Adobe Reader!
We use ScanSoft PDF Create! to create the PDF files directly from Word 2007. In the tool settings we activated now the option "Optimize for Web Viewing". Now it works correctly with every testet document.
But it still strange, that we didn't had the Problem with Adobe Reader 8.
    Many thanks for your support.

  • Adobe Reader searches PDF incorrectly Foxit does it correctly

There is an "answered" thread on this subject.
I find that Adobe Reader is hit or miss on searches. I am looking up court cases which
are presented to me in PDF format by filetype:PDF.
I know a tern is in the PDF because that is how Google selected it. Adobe reader won't always find the term. Sometimes it finds an entirely different word that what I enter in the search box.
This is not a problem with the way that the PDF was created because Foxit Reader finds the terms.
    What is going on?

    Hey Grethe,
Please use the ' Fix It '  tool for your specific Windows version using this link : When you run an .exe file on a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different pro…
Once done restart your computer. Let me know if the issue persist.

  • Adobe reader search feature is slow..

I have an issue here at work where a user is using Reader 9.3.0 and she is able to successfully find an entry/data when using a 16,000 page pdf file (66 MB file) within seconds - the entry comes up after 5 seconds even when she starts at page 1. Another user that has the same version of Reader (9.3.0) is not having this success. When she starts the find option, the search starts at page 1 and just moves from there. It could take 45-60 minutes to get to the same point in the PDF that the other user gets to within seconds.
One thing that I did notice is that the user that has the quick search/find doesn't have the page numbers escalate one at a time; the search is run in the background and then it finds the data that she was looking for.
Both users have enable "enable fast find" selected with a cache size of 100 MB.
Thanks in advance for your assistance
    Regards
    Greg

*Update* - this is getting silly ...
I was trying to work around the problem, and adobe just wiped all the content from the PDF - it's now just a load of blank pages (and I've lost a bit of work).
I never had any problems before loading Mavericks.
    Thanks

  • Adobe Reader email function (HELP!)

I have Reader 9, everytime I click on the email button to email the pdf to someone, nothing happens, my Outlook does not open (outlook.exe process does not even open),
Is there some place in Reader that I set outlook as default email client?
    What else could be wrong?
I have outlook set as default in IE settings

I clicked on View --> Toolbars --> More, and checked the box to put the email button on the main toolbar

  • An apparent failure of the Adobe Reader's Search Function

    Hi
I am helping my brother in Australia with computer usage, I am in the UK. He is studying Roman History and I introduced him to MS OneNote as a method of storing and cataloging his required readings. This has worked well until recently when he found a complete failure of its search function to find words within the text. After confirming that this wasn't a user fault, I suggested we actually saved the pdf file from the university web site and use Adobe's search function. Unfortunately, we experienced exactly the same problem. I have used Adobe to search many PDF publications, mainly User Manuals, with great success and I am puzzled as to why this failure may be occuring. As a test, I have loaded one of his pdf files into Adobe Reader 9.3 and search for words like Roman and tigris and even when I am on the same page as the word, the 'End of Document' dialogue appears.
I would appreciate any advice or help in this matter.
    Best regards
    Mike Staveley

  • Highlight 3D PMI as a function in adobe reader?

    Hi!
I use Catia V5 r18 and the Functional Tolerancing & Annotation 2 module to create CATParts that include manufacturing information. As a means of distribution I have looked into using the 3D-pdf functionality of Adobe Acrobat Professional Extended. The transition from CATPart to 3D-pdf is easy to use, and the settings/configurations are apparently transparent and easy to use. There is however one function I can't find. In Catia you can use the geometry connection management to make links between an annotation and several geometries (eg. all the holes in a 13 hole series). If you apply this, all linked geometry will highlight if you click on the annotation.
When I view the pdf file using Adobe reader, this function is no longer available. A click on an annotation merely highlights the annotation itself. Is there a way to configure the 3D-pdf so that the information form the CATPart regarding connected geometry is included and viewable?
As a side note it IS possible to toggle highlight 3D PMI and view this information if you use Adobe 3D Reviewer to open the pdf file, thus indicating that the information is stored in the pdf, just not viewable with a conventional reader.
    TL;DR:
Links between geometry and annotations does not dislplay when said annotations are clickerd in adobe reader. But: they do highlight in 3D Reviewer.

Not in the free Reader, no.

  • RoboHelp 8 vs. 9 - Search Functionality Comparison and "All of the Words" vs. "Any of the Words"

    Greetings!
Our organization focuses a lot on the accuracy of our searches, which is a necessity when we have hundreds of very lengthy topics (no matter how well organized they are).
I finally completed a detailed comparison of the search functionality of 8 and 9 and came to the realization that 8 is a disaster, while with 9 things get better, but there's still TONS of room for improvement.  I have reported this to Adobe and so far there has been no official response. There are many blogs on here related to the search functionality, but I thought it may be a good idea to try to sum some of them up. I do hope that someone somewhere at Adobe runs into this and shares with all of us why Adobe's Search functionality is still in the 20th century!
I hope this helps everyone else who is curious to know about how the tool's search functions work and whether it's worth upgrading from 8 to 9 at this point. I have included some examples which are in a way internal to us, but they will give you a good idea of what to expect and I'm quite confident you'll be able to recreate them on your side in seconds.
I also wanted to ask a question or two, and if anyone can assist, that would be greatly appreciated:
Currently if we search for several words at once (not exact phrase), both 8 and 9 perform an "Any of the words" search which always returns too many results. Does anyone know a way to change the default to an "All of the words" search? For years I have not encountered a tool out there that doesn't have the option to modify this, alas with RoboHelp 8 and 9, we can't find a way to do it (with or without modifying the source code).
Out of curiosity, are there any other tools out there which offer Conditional Tag (or similar) functionality and which behave better than RoboHelp? (easier to maintain, less buggy, web interface, etc)?
RoboHelp 8 vs 9 - Search Functionality Comparison Table with some Examples:
    Search Example
    RoboHelp 8
    RoboHelp 9
    Expected Results
    (based on industry standards)
    1. Searching for Exact Phrase "Correspondent Banking"
Such a search returns topics which contain "Correspondent Banking" and "Correspondent Bank". The last one is included because "Bank" is the root of "Banking". The topics that contain the exact phrase appear at the bottom. When we click on any of them, we're not automatically taken to phrase so we have to scroll and look for it or use CTR+F.
Identical behavior except that when we click on the topics which contain the exact phrase, we're taken straight to it.
When we hear "exact" we expect "exact" and nothing else. Unfortunately, both versions keep searching for the roots of each word as well and incorrectly display those results at the top. Adobe has made it clear that this is a part of their functionality, BUT this is something we would not expect to see for exact phrase searches that are in quotes.
    2. A Non-Exact phrase search of "Geographical Limits of market area"
The tool automatically performs an "Any of the Words" search instead of an "All of the Words" search. This is also related to the question I asked above this table. As you can imagine, this is returning almost every topic and it becomes virtually impossible to find what we're looking for. It even returns topics which contain "of" and nothing else.
    Identical behavior
There to be an option which allows us to choose what the default search would be - "Any of the words" vs. "All of the Words"
    3. Exact Phrase search of "low-score" with a dash
None of the topics that were returned contain the phrase. As some of you know, RH8 has problems with special characters, including dashes.
RH9 returned only the topic that which contains the phrase and we were taken straight to it when we open it.
The expectation is to see exactly what RH9 currently offers. Unfortunately 8 has a big problem with these types of searches.
    4. Exact Phrase search of "2.4"
This is similar to the one above. Adobe doesn't like periods as well. It doesn't not find any of the topics which contain this phrase. In our case, this is a section number and sometimes people want a quick way to get to a specific section or sub-section.
We were hoping that this will be fixed with 9, just the way they fixed the dashes. Unfortunately, still ZERO results returned.
Expectation is for the topics which contain that exact phrase to be returned, no matter whether there's any special character inbetween.
    5. Exact Phrase search of "300,000" or $300,000"
The tool only returned several random topics which contain "000" as part of larger numbers. The topic that contains "300,000" was not on that list, even though it also contains "000".
    Identical behavior
Expectation is for topics that contain the exact amount to be returned, no matter if there is a coma or a dollar sign anywhere within the phrase.
    6. Exact Phrase Search of "525-B5". Goal was to have a special character, a letter and numbers.
    ZERO Results returned.
Only the docs that contain the phrase were returned and nothing else. It seems that this this was addressed in version 9 and now it behaves as expected.
Expectation is only for the docs that contain the exact phrase to be returned.
    7. Exact phase search of "log" in order to test the Substring Functionality
Here's an extract from Adobe's Support Site:
“Substring search (WebHelp/Pro, FlashHelp/Pro) - If you enable this feature, a search for "log" returns topics containing the words "catalog" and "logarithm." Substring search takes longer than whole-string search.”
So with that in mind, we decided to test if turning the substring searches on and off does exactly as advertised, unfortunately the answer was NO. We even used an example almost idnetical to what Adobe provided on their site.
With Substring Searches disabled, we searched for the word "log". Unfortunately it returned words like "logbook" and methodology". How is that possible?
    Identical behavior
Our expectation would be only for docs that contain"log" to be returned, no matter whether substring is enabled or disabled. In our case it was disabled.

    Hi there
Out of curiosity, why is it that you expect to hear from Adobe? I'm hoping it's not simply because you posted here. Certainly we have Adobe folks that visit here and we are thankful for that, but it isn't to be expected.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Adobe Reader X - Disable "Display PDF in Browser" via Registry

I'm trying to configure my organization's Windows workstations so that web-based PDF files open in Adobe Reader rather than in internet browsers. I have been able to configure Adobe Reader 9 installations to open web-based PDF files in Reader rather than internet browsers by using the following registry setting:
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals
    Value name
    bBrowserIntegration
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
My problem lies with Adobe Reader X: I used the following settings in attempting to prevent Adobe Reader X installations from opening web-based PDFs in internet browsers:
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Originals
    Value name
    bBrowserIntegration
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Originals
    Value name
    bAllowByteRangeRequests
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
    Hive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key path
    Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\AVGeneral
    Value name
    bBrowserDisplayInReadMode
    Value type
    REG_DWORD
    Value data
    0x0 (0)
I've only had partial success, though. Internet Explorer respects the registry settings and opens web-based PDFs in Reader X. Firefox 14.0.1, though, ignores the registry settings and opens web-based PDFs in Firefox.
Is there a different registry setting I should be using so that Firefox sees "Display PDF in Browser" unchecked and allows web-based PDFs to be opened in Reader X? Is there another method I should be following for deploying this setting to Adobe Reader X clients?

    Hi,
We'll, you've educated yourself well. Unfortunately, Acrobat products can't control what browsers do so uniform behavior is not possible.  The setting is Adobe's best attempt and forcing some consistency.
The ReadMode setting only controls what happens in the UI after the PDF is open.

  • Error 1625 with Adobe Reader Update on Windows Server 2008 R2 OS

For the last two months when I receive updates to Adobe Reader 9.3 I get Error 1625:  Update failed.  Update not permitted by system policy.   But there is no system policy since this is a stand-alone machine.
Windows Server 2008 R2 is equivalent to Windows 7 OS but has some special security features.  If I could manually download and run this update and by pass the Adobe automated install I might be able to fix the problem by running the update "as administrator" but I think Adobe doesn't give me that choice.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Adobe Reader 9.3 but still get the same result when applying this update.
Adobe reader is working fine, so I would be happy also if Adobe just stopped trying to send me this update.
    Any suggestions?

I did.  When I posted my last response ending in "did not work"  I had a dashed line and
Adobe in there infinite wisdom interpreted that as an  end of message.   So here is the rest
of my last post which was cut off:
So I then tried ʇɐb ɹəuəllıʍ's  solution (the one above your suggestion) - downloading the updates to my desktop and applying them by hand.   That worked.
But this means I may need to download all future updates by hand for this computer.   It's great that ʇɐb ɹəuəllıʍ  posted links for these three updates above,  but I'm wondering how to easily automate getting download links for all future updates since I don't have access to the parent directory http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/.
Please suggest a way I can install all future updates by hand without requesting a special link.  In particular, when you download an update using  Adobe Reader "search for updates", where is that update saved so perhaps I could run it by hand instead of the automated way.

  • Adobe Reader 11.0.09 stops responding for 30 seconds after start

When starting AR 11 (either via it's Icon or via a .pdf document), AR starts normally but after a few seconds the interface freezes and stops responding for around 30 seconds. Logging the start-up with Process Monitor gives the output below (actually two instances, only one is shown). When the second instance times out (I'm guessing that is what's going on), AR11 starts responding again.
The whole problem disappears if the plugin Weblink.api is removed, with the unfortunate side effect that the Tools pane on the right also disapperas (replaced with a spinning Icon but AR11 is otherwise responding well).
The server that AR11 is installed on does not have any Internet access whatsoever. My guess is that AR11 is looking for the host above for some reason and need to time out before it is available for use. This is of course an extremely poor design and we wish to resolve it somehow.. Ideas anyone?
    /Patrik

Solution found. By enabling a lockdown feature, we prevented Adobe from trying to muck about getting online. Actually NSA provides recommendations on how to lock down Adobe Reader, google "NSA recommendations for configuring Adobe Reader XI in a Windows Environment". We only used:
    HKLM\Software\Policies\Adobe\<product>\<version>\FeatureLockDown\cCloud
    bDisableADCFileStore                    REG_DWORD               Set to 1

  • Adobe Reader 11.0.2 signing with OCSP embedding?

These days, I've been testing Adobe Reader 11.0.2 signing with OCSP embedding, and the following was unclear:
    1. If there is CRL file in Adobe  Reader 11 CRL Cache (C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\11.0\Security\CRLCache), then OCSP is not embedded in e-signature, but CRL is embedded. How can I configure Adobe  Reader 11, so that signature doesn't have embedded cached CRL, but OCSP for end-user certificate?
    2. Why doesn't Adobe Reader 11 display full OCSP certificate chain? Adobe Reader 10 displays full OCSP certificate chain. You can see attached picture:
    Dragan

Both of these problems are also in the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC 2015.007.20033. The first problem on the Windows 7 computer can be resolved by deleting the CRL Cache (before signing) in the following location: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\DC\Security\CRLCache.
