Configure AE in WDS mode to share NAS in wireless network?

How do I configure latest airport express in "extend existing network" mode to connect a network hdd (mybook live) LAN/WAN to the wireless network?

Have you checked to verify that the Ethernet port is working correctly on the Express?
If not, temporarily turn of the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the Ethernet port on the Express.  See if you can get an Internet connection.
If you can, this indicates that that the Express is configured correctly. The issue is with your hard drive.
If you cannot, then the Express is not "extending" despite the fact that you might think that it is.
What happens when you test the Express?

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.

  • "Participate in WDS.." or "Extend a wireless network" ?

I've got two AEBS's, one is to be used as a main base station and the other is to be used as a remote base station. I aslo have an AXBS that will be used for Airtunes.
The main AEBS is connected to my dsl modem and is hardwired via ethernet to the 24" iMac. It also has a shared usb printer connected to it.
The remote AEBS is connected to an older iMac via ethernet cable, and also has a shared hard drive connected to it.
The AXBS is used only for Airtunes.
I also have a laptop running Windows XP that I can connect wirelessly to the network for internet access and Bonjour printing to the shared printer.
Currently, I have the network cobbled together by "creating a wireless network" with the main AEBS, and "extending a wireless network" with the remote. It is unclear to me whether I need to allow wireless clients for the remote.
Is this the best way to set up the components described above, or might it be better to set up a wireless distribution system (WDS).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks for the help Duane.
The AEBS operating as a "remote" is being used with a shared hard drive (which to my understanding is only capable by using an AEBS, rather than an Express). It is also being used to provide an older iMac (with no Airport card) the ability to connect to the internet wirelessly.
So you've pretty much answered my question regarding the use of WDS. I didn't know that WDS operates at "g" speeds, so it makes no sense for me to use to 802.11n devices at the slower 802.11g speed.
My only remaining question is whether I need to check the "Allow wireless clients" box under the Wireless tab in Airport Utility when setting up the so called remote AEBS. If I do not, I still seem to be able to connect to the shared hard drive with either computer -- the older iMac wired to the Extreme with the shared hard drive, as well as with the newer iMac that is wired to the other (main) Extreme.) This seems like a really dumb question but, what exactly does this "Allow wireless clients" checkbox do?
    Thanks,

  • How to configure and join the Timecapsule as an Extend a Wireless Network

    Dear Apple users,
I have a question. I have @ home a Time Capsule what's connected directly to my cisco 2000 series (router modem). Iam using wireless from my cisco 2000 but i would like to join it like a accesspoint with the time capsule.
The tcp/ip are in the same ranges, but it would not connect ;-( is it uberhaupt possible?
    I hope to hear

but i would like to join it like a accesspoint with the time capsule.
The tcp/ip are in the same ranges, but it would not connect ;-( is it uberhaupt possible?
The Cisco 2000 .. can you give us the full model number on that.
Did you mean wireless extend as Bob is referring to or do you mean to connect by ethernet and use the 2000 as AP.. if you want to do the later that is fine.
Only one device can be router.. so assuming the TC is router and at default IP..
Then set the 2000 to ip eg 10.0.1.254
Turn off dhcp server in the 2000.
Plug ethernet to LAN port of 2000 to LAN port of TC.
You are now in a mode of operation we call WAN bypass. You have effectively bridged the 2000.. in the same way you select bridge in the TC.. which is a neat option instead of having to do it manually.
For roaming wireless you then setup same SSID = Wireless Name (but use SMB compatible.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric on both). Same Security WPA2 AES = WPA2 Personal. Same password for wireless..
BUT use different channels.. this is sometimes ok with just auto but I recommend manual control. So for 2.4ghz set one box to 11 and the other to 6 or 1. This ensures they work without interferring with one another. Do not use 40mhz wide channels on the 2000.. Apple wireless only allows for 20mhz on 2.4ghz. And it generally works better anyway.. 5ghz in the TC can use wide channels.

  • HT2497 I am having problems configuring my emails and having them connect to my wireless network.

Can not get email to set up ..  I am trying to use exchange.

try running an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports () of the AEBS to your Mac, then launch airport utility (in applications > utilities).
if your AEBS can bee seen by airport utility, click on continue and follow on-screen instructions. when finished, you can remove the ethernet cable.

  • Help!  WDS mode Airport Express Ethernet port

Hi: I just bought a LaCie ethernet disk mini. The info on the Lacie page said you could use it wirelessly by conecting it to the airport. I curently have my airport in the living room and an airport express in my own room. The airpot express is used to extend the wireless network range through WDS. Im trying to conect the Lacie Hard Drive to the ethernet port on the airport express to hook it up to my network. Is there a setting I have to change? Can this be done in the configuration im using?
    Cheers!

If the Airport Express has been configured (using the Airport Setup Assistant) to "extend" the wireless network of your Airport Extreme Base Station, the LaCie ethernet disk can be cabled to the ethernet port of the Airport Express. No additional settings need to be made on either the Extreme Base Station or the Airport Express to make this work.
My suggestion - cable the LaCie hard drive to the ethernet LAN port of your Airport Extreme Base Station. Overall performance will be much better - in fact, data transfer speeds could be up to twice as fast compared to cabling the device to the Airport Express.

  • Necessary to have the same wireless network name for using WDS?

I have set up two Airports in WDS mode. I did this so my ps3 could get on the internet via ethernet (its an older model, and doesn't have wireless, so you have to use an ethernet bridge). I set up the WDS fine, and my Airport extreme base station (the square one) is the WDS main, while as my old Airport extreme (snow) is the remote, which I use to run a cable from to my ps3 to access the internet. This works fine when I have the network names for each base station the same.
I was under the impression that you could have two different named wireless networks for two base stations (i.e .they have different names), as long as you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the WDS settings (i.e. main and remote). However, when I do that, I can no longer access the ethernet from the remote base station on my PS3. I can only access the ethernet via my PS3 if I have the wireless network for each base station literally named the same. Seems kind of strange if you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the main and remote, as shouldn't they be talking to each other via that mode, and not the actual wireless network name?
I would like to have each base station with its own wirelss network name, so I can differentiate between them. I get some strange issues when my airport card scans, it frequently switches between base stations, and this slows down certain programs (i.e. VPN connections for mail etc).
I set this up pretty literally from the airport guide from the apple site.

I was under the impression that you could have two different named wireless networks for two base stations (i.e .they have different names), as long as you have the MAC addresses set up correctly for the WDS settings (i.e. main and remote).
No that is not correct. Since the 2 are working together to create a single wireless network, they must use the same network name.

  • HT1731 How does one configure a NEW (unconfigured) AirPort Express to join a WiFi network that has a non-broadcasted SSID?

The following KB article assumes that the user has a configured AirPort Express:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731
I reset my AirPort Express, because the SSID of the WiFi network changed and its name is not broadcast for security reasons.
When using the "AirPort Utility" ( not the "AirPort Admin Utility" – which is the wrong name of the application in the article! ) the application found the unconfigured AirPort Express, connected to the LAN via ethernet; However, when selected, the configuration "wizard" assumes that the user wants to configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi base station.
I selected the option to have the AirPort Express join a WiFi network; However, the AirPort Utility sent back an error, saying that a "Base station" ( WiFi network?! ) could not be found. Well, guess what? That's because the SSID of the network I want the AirPort Express to join.
    UGH!
...and the best part is that there is no other solution, but to run with the AirPort Utility's assumptions, configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi Base station, then follow the KB article's instructions ( which are not accurate ) to re-configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi client.
This is a really bad user experience, Apple.
Please try following your own instructions to see how fantastically they fail..then, re-write your KB articles.
    Thanks,
PS — If anyone knows of any easier methodologies, do tell. (That's the "question" part of this inquiry )
PPS — My Mac Pro, which I used to configure the AirPort Express, does not have WiFi.
PPPS — Why do all the articles that match searches for "AirPort Express" return articles that refer to "AirPort Base Stations"?!  Please, for the love of UX, be consistent!

    Here are the basic steps:
    Run the AirPort Utility
    Select the AirPort Express
    Click on Manual Setup
    Click on the AirPort icon
    Click on the Wireless tab
For Wireless Mode, select the "Join a wireless network" option
In the Wireless Network Name field, enter the SSID of the hidden wireless network you want the Express to join.
Select the approrpriate wireless security type in the Wireless Security window.
Enter the appropriate wireless security password for the hidden network.
    Click on Update.

  • Airport Express as very slow in "extend wireless network" mode

    Hi!
I am using a Airport Extreme (fourth generation) as a wireless router and a Airport Express 802.11n in "extend wireless network" mode.
I've set the Airport Extreme mode to 802.11n only - and all devices connect to the Airport Extreme as 802.11n Clients properly.
But as soon as they connect to the Airport Express, they only work in 802.11b/g mode (although they are capable of n)
and the connection is very slow - around 1Mb/s:
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/804/bildschirmfoto20111211u.png/
Can i force the Airport Express station to accept only "n" connections to speed up my file tranfers?
    Thanks for any help!
    matt

Where is the AirPort Express located in relation to the area that needs more wireless coverage?
Ideally, it would be at a point that is about half the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage....and....there would be no obstructions like walls and/or ceilings in the signal path....tough to do in most homes, so do the best that you can.
Avoid placing the Express down low on the wall and use an extension cord to get it up as high as possible with a free look into the room.
The Express will normally "extend" what it receives, but you could try the following to see if it helps:
Temporarily, change the Wireless Mode setting on the AirPort Express to "Create a wireless network" and change the Radio Mode to "802.11n only".
(You may have to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Radio Mode selection box to see the "802.11n only" choice). Then change the Wireless Mode back to "Extend a wireless network" and Update.

  • Airport Express, using 2 in WDS mode, simple question.

when my router gave out (used to hook an apple laserwriter to my wireless network), i picked up another airport express, as i was told with 2 of them i could utilize the ethernet port on the 2nd to use for my ethernet printer. everything works, but in the airport utility setup, i thought i'd be able to add the 2nd express to the network, not extend the network (the option read to share a usb printer or for airtunes). i liked this option, as i don't need the extra range, and would be happy without the extra signal running. unfortunately, set up like this, my printer cannot be found via printer set-up/appletalk. i need to select the option to 'extend my network' in the airport utility to see the printer.
so i am assuming that in the 'add to network' mode the ethernet port is disabled, but usb and airtunes is enabled? is there any way around this, perhaps in manual set-up?
    thanks.

so i am assuming that in the 'add to network' mode the ethernet port is disabled, but usb and airtunes is enabled? is there any way around this, perhaps in manual set-up?
Your assumption is correct. When configured as a "wireless client," the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port is NOT enabled. To enable it, it must be configured in a WDS with another base station.

  • AX in WDS mode, slow Safari browsing!

    To anyone with good ideas,
I have my G5PM connected (eth) to my AX in WDS mode. It works . But, browsing through Safari is sluggish. What do I mean by sluggish?.?. Well, before any page is loaded the browser pauses for approximately 3 seconds. This wait time varies between 2 to 5 seconds before any page opens. This occurs even after connecting to a namespace an browsing through that namespace (ex. apple.com to apple.com/trailers).
My download speeds are normal. File transfers and iChat video conferences occur at broadband speeds. I just wanted to ping others before taking any network sniffs.
    Any ideas are welcome,

  • Speed issue with TC and Airport Express 802.11n in WDS mode...

    Here is my problem.
I replaced my older base station / Express duo with
a new Time Capsule (1TB) and a new Airport Express (802.11n).
I set up the network with the TC as base station running a WDS network (WDS main) and the Express is the WDS remote.
When I check the wireless clients from the TC, I find my iMac running at 130Mbits and the Extreme at 54Mbits.
No other wireless clients are connected to the network (I kept my slower network as a parallel one for my "older" Macs).
The only other connected device is my Dish network DVR that is connected via an Ethernet cable directly to the Express.
So my question is why does the Express not communicate at >54 speed rate with the TC?
And, why does my iMac connect with 130 and not with 300Mbits?
    Any thoughts?

Instead of using WDS, you should take advantage of the "Allow this network to be extended" option that is available for the 802.11n AirPorts including the TC. WDS only operates in the 802.11g radio mode.
    Here's the basic setup:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • WDS mode slows network

    Problem:
I have two original Airport Express that are set up in WDS mode. Recently the network slowed down to a crawl. When I unplugged the remote WDS express the unit resumed normal speed.
I hard reset remote WDS back to factory default hoping that would clear up the issue. Airport Utility failed to bridge the two express units twice in auto mode so I did it manually. Once all was back up the network still slowed down when the remote WDS configured express was plugged in.
    Question:
Is there something I'm doing wrong in set up to cause this error (why can't I set up in auto "hand holding" mode for example)
    or
Is the unit set up as the WDS remote just defective?
Another odd thing is that Airpor Utility reports the unit's serial number as gibberish -- leading me to thing this unit is burnt.
    Any ideas appreciated.

You may have a couple of issues on your network.
Normally, when things work OK and then the wireless slows down, that is an indication that you may be picking up interference from another nearby wireless network, a cordless phone (if you have them, or at the neighbors) or even a wireless security system that has been installed nearby.
The usual thing to try is to change the channel on your main router to see if you have find a settings with more clear airspace around you. You may need to experiment to find the best channel.
If you reset the AirPort Express back to factory defaults and you see a corrupted serial number, try the reset again.
Power down the Express for at least 15-20 minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding the reset button in as you plug the Express back in to power
Keep holding the reset button in until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly.
Try the setup again. If you still see corrupted settings, that may be an indication that your device will need to be replaced.
Finally, you should understand that WDS imposes a tremendous bandwidth loss penalty on the wireless network. The first "relay" or "remote" cuts the bandwidth on the entire network in half. The second cuts the remaining bandwidth in half again.
So, bottom line with two WDS devices, your network is down to only 25% of its original bandwidth. Might be OK for general web browsing but any demanding things like video streaming or copying large files over the network are going to be very slow at best.

  • 4 WAP121 in WDS mode

    Hello,
I'm triying to configure four AP WAP121 in WDS mode but I am worried.
The firmware version is 1.0.4.4 ; each AP have a static IP address in an isolated network (VLAN 2).
Each AP transmits two wireless networks :
    - Network 1:
      - VLAN 10
      - SSID: Company
    - Network 2 :
      - VLAN 20
      - SSID: Guest
The AP master is connected to the wired network ; the other three are connected by WiFi.
    The settings are :
      Mode: 802.b / g / n
      Channel Bandwidth: 20 Mhz
      Channel: 1
On AP master, there are mac addresses (physical) of three other terminals.
On AP "slave", there are mac address (physical) of master AP.
In "Status and Statistics" > "Network Interfaces", WDS is UP and I can switch from one AP to another.
But the problem is that the master terminal crashing repeatedly: we lose the connection to the LAN and the Internet. As soon as I restart the AP, it works. minhvu4toyotires have the same problem in this post https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11630556/how-setup-4-wap321-1-ssid but no answer :(
I have few users at the moment (maximum 7) and no load on the wifi (10 Mb / s maximum).
Does anyone have an idea ?
    Thank you in advance

    Hello,
    Thank you for your answer.
The master AP bug about once or twice a day : I restarts every morning and sometimes in the afternoon.
Customers who were connected lose the LAN and they can not reconnect until the AP is restarted: DHCP frames do not go to the server. After reboot it's ok.
    Here is the diagnosis:
    Crash Log:
Uptime of the AP: 6 Days, 22 Hours, 48 Minutes and 27 Seconds
CPU Unable to handle kernel paging request for process = swapper and pid = 0
    epc == c0517fe0, ra == c054c614
    I found a similar post: https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11804691/wap121-after-one-day-ap-unresponsive
I just make adjustments on the master AP hopefully that will solve the problems.
