Configure DNS for website hosted externally

Hi,
I've configured DNS and it's all working fine except we can't access our own website which is hosted by another ISP with a different WAN IP.
If I add a www record we can access the the standard 10.4 placeholder page but if we remove that record it can't find anything.
I know I need to add a record to point to the Web Hosting ISP's WAN IP but am unsure how to do this.
Thanks in advance.
intel iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

>In 10.3 I knew how to create a www record linked
to a partular IP but I'm unsure how to do this in
10.4
The interface is a little different, but the process
is the same - use Server Admin -> DNS, select your
zone file and add a new record (via the + button).
Set the name to 'www' and give it the IP address of
your ISP-hosted site.
Thanks Camelot.
So it's a machine that needed to be added! I find the new termanology quite confusing. In all my reading about DNS I've never heard "machines" mentioned. It's straight forward now you've explained it.
Thanks alot for your help.

  • Exchange 2013 DNS for internal and external domain

    Hi All,
I have been assigned a task to implement Microsoft Exchange Server 2013. I need some help in setting up DNS namespaces and design a strategy to have same internal and external names. Let me share some details here.
We have an Active Directory domain myinternaldomain.net, and we have a public domain
mypublicdomain.com and we have setup email policy to have
mypublicdomain.com as the SMTP domain for all the users. We have created another DNS zone in Active directory integrated DNS and created a records for
mail.mypublicdomain.com and autodiscover.mypublicdomain.com which will point to CAS NLB IP. We have 2 CAS servers and 2 MBX servers, we have configured DAG for MBX High availability and planning to implement WNLB for CAS as
hardware LB is out of scope due to budget constrains.
We want to have same URLs for OWA, Autodiscover, ECP and other services from internal network as well as from public network. Users should not be bothered to remember two URLs, using one from internal and other from public networks. I also want to confirm
that with this setup in place do i need to have myinternaldomain.net and server names in SAN certificate?
    Thanks

    Hi Sccmnb,
You can easily achieve this using split DNS.
Internal DNS hostname "mail.mypublicdomain.com" will be pointing to your internal CAS NLB IP and the external public DNS hostname"mail.mypublicdomain.com" will be pointing to the Network device or
    Reverse proxy server IP.
Depending upon users access location(internal\external) the IPs would vary and they should be able to access the website with same name.
The names that you would require on the certificate(Use EAC or powershell to raise the request) for client connectivity would be
    SN= mail.mypublicdomain.com
    SAN= autodiscover.mypublicdomain.com
You don't need to have the active directory domain name present in the certificate.
Additional  to this you need to update the AutodiscoverURI for all servers and OWA,ECP,Autodiscover Virtual Directories InternalURL and ExternalURL fields with appropiate public names.
    Some additional Info:
    *Internal vs. External Namespaces
Since the release of Exchange 2007, the recommendation is to deploy a split-brain DNS infrastructure for the Internet-based client namespaces. A split-brain DNS infrastructure enables different IP addresses to be returned for a given namespace
based on where the client resides – if the client is within the internal network, the IP address of the internal load balancer is returned; if the client is external, the IP address of the external gateway/firewall is returned.
This approach simplifies the end-user experience – users only have to know a single namespace (e.g., mail.contoso.com) to access their data, regardless of where they are connecting. A split-brain DNS infrastructure, also simplifies the configuration of Client
Access server virtual directories, as the InternalURL and ExternalURL values within the environment can be the same value.

The author of the page uses the h2n tool to generate the DNS configuration files. The examples listed are not examples of the actual DNS configuration files like named.conf, etc., but samples of the configuration files to use with the h2n tool. Perhaps the instructions will work if followed more precisely.

  • Suggestions for website hosting os 10.9.4?

I need help with: selecting website hosting providers and/or webmail/email hosting provider; suggestions?
    I have:
1 mac-mini late 2012, i7 quad core 2.33 Ghz, 16GB RAM (yes, had RAM upgraded at MAC store before bringing it home) 750 GB hard drive, OS Mavericks 10.9.4 as my Primary desktop computer, with HDTV as monitor via HDMI cable. USB wireless wave keyboard (MAC's smaller bluetooth keyboards aggravate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome,), MAC optical/super-drive (aren't they the same thing?) via USB.  I've run it appx 18 months without issue except the mail app (I know; join the club).
MacBook Pro 13" Retina display, late 2013, i5 Intel 2.6 Gz processor, 512 GB flash drive, 8 GB RAM (2 x 4 GB RAM chips/card/white-thingies-whatchacall'ems), OS Mavericks 10.9.4. It's slow, but otherwise fine for most uses. Same MAC/Apple bluetooth 'magic' mouse used for both, sometimes trackpad on notebook. I use native notebook keyboard and just rest hands frequently.
    iPhone 5s iOS 7.1.
My problem: I originally set up my 5 gmail accounts on MAC-mini and iPhone per support page instructions. Ran 'connection doctor' more times than I care to count, and always came up saying setup was correct. I was unaware of problems until some eBay customers and family mentioned that I hadn't written them in weeks and that I was not responding to their emails.I went to my accounts on gmail server with Safari (7.0.6) and there were more than 100 emails in each inbox that hadn't made it to my mail app, and several 'sent emails' in both trash and inbox, but not 'sent' folder (the circling about of gmail many have mentioned before me).
I have set up NO EMAIL ACCOUNTS on MacBook Pro, not wanting to subject it, nor me, to google-mess. (bought it because I will be laid up with surgery on my old dancers'  feet for a few months and cannot use stairs (4-story house)
What I have done so far:
Prior to owning the MacBook Pro, I bought and downloaded 3 different mail apps which purported to handle gmail. All three had the same cycling and connection issues. (mail pilot most recent, will amend post when I find names of the other 2), They and were cumbersome, didn't interact with calendar and notes as purported, etc.
Then set up account at "fastmail.fm" per recommendation of one of the online MAC magazines exactly as directed on fastmail.fm. It worked on iPhone, but not on Mac Mini. Deleted it, closed account.
I researched website hosting to begin the learning/building/set-up process; makes sense while I am laid up (MacBook Pro 13" Retina by now) AND TO HAVE EMAIL ON DESKTOP. Settled on GoDaddy which has just refunded everything I spent on the site, because after weeks of effort, and trial with various hosting levels and domains, NOTHING WORKED. Used Adobe CC Muse and Dreamweaver to build sites. Both said they had uploaded on MacBook Pro, (used FTP app from App Store and then Muse built-in uploader) but while the proper file sizes (on Go Daddy) were bigger, no websites were visible "Something Cool Coming Soon" persisted.
Webmail accounts I set up (cPanel) on native MacBook Pro app with 2 different Go Daddy domain names failed. They worked for about 2 hours then simply stopped sending and receiving at all.
Many calls and online chats with Go Daddy support were non-productive.
Additional info: Makes sense to have website which I can grow into e-commerce site as I learn. I sell custom and restored Harley-Davidson motorcycles online and Vintage OEM Harley parts. Ebay is okay, but limiting. Wish to use own site separate from/in addition to eBay eventually. When I learn enough ..... yes I'm at novice to website building and management, only used Apple products about 2 years. Yet after decades of fighting with Windows-based PC's and Androids, I'm no stranger to computing, the web, and computers in general.
What I want: Can someone please suggest SOMETHING that JUST WORKS??!!
NOTE: I live in rural area so HughesNet satellite internet connection is my ONLY option (slow compared to fiber optics, but fasted Hughes offers -- maybe VZW 4G/LTE could be tried, but I'm under contract with Hughes. Cisco Linksey 2500 Router. I don't know if this is relevant or not.

Click the ≡ Menu Button in the top right, then the Preferences icon in the panel that opens. If that icon is missing,
    # Click the ≡ Menu Button in the top right.
    # Click Customize in the lower left.
    # Either drag the Preferences icon from the customization palette on the left onto the panel on the right, or click the Restore Defaults button.
If you somehow had Google Calendar integrated into Firefox, that feature was provided by an add-on.

  • Configuring DNS for Open Directory

I'm reading Mac OS X Server Essentials, A Guide to Using and Supporting Mac OS X Server 10.4 and in the Open Directory section it says Make sure your server is resolving DNS correctly. If not, you may need to stop and start DNS.
I don't have DNS set up on our Xserve so I started reading the section about DNS.
We don't serve any web or mail services from this Xserve and I don't want to screw up the Custom DNS service provided by our web host/nic provider. If I enter my domain in the DNS admin area will that affect anything outside our LAN?

It says: "Make sure it is resolving DNS correclty. ...". It ain't saying: "DNS has to be running on the OD server itself. ...".
So if your network provides does handle dns for you that perfectly fine. Just check that they have forward and reverse records in place.

  • Configuring DNS for Pocast Producer

After having a **** of a time setting up the other services I decided to follow the manual to the letter while setting up the podcast producer.
    First problem on first step!
Configured the DNS the way the manual says to (on page 23)
When i ping myserver.pcast.private i get "could not find host"
The logs says "myserver.pcast.private has no address records (A or AAAA)
I have not activated the Mail service on my box since my university is already using an exchange server..
    any ideas?
    Thanks

    pixelmnky,
I did the same thing. The documentation is seriously lacking in terms of clarity.
In place of "myserver.pcast.private" use your actual server DNS name, for example "server1.example.com".
The documentation makes it seem as though you need to use the literal address "myserver.pcast.private".
If I understand your question properly, this should work.

  • Need Opinions for website hosting

I have been designing a website for publication soon. I have never before purchased a URL or published to anything other than .mac and AOL Hometown (about 8 years ago). I am currently looking to purchase a private domain to use with iWeb. My question is, with so many companies selling website domains, hosting and storage, how do I know what I need and which company is the best to use?
I only need one email address with the domain name and be able to forward it to my .mac site. Hopefully simple and not too expensive. Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer!

I just did some research on this for a friend the other day. There are obviously a TON of options in that area, but one that I am going to recommend my friend try is http://www.inmotionhosting.com/
They seemed to have the most features for the money, along with a really high customer rating and almost no down time.
I use http://www.ipower.com/ to host my account and even though it got low customer ratings, I haven't had any major problems so far. They have what you are asking for for $3.95 per month.
    Good luck!

  • Configure OMS for Linux host patching

    Hello,
I try to configure OMS 10.1.2.3.0(?) to patch my Oracle EL 5 x84_64 hosts. I followed the instructions in the document "Administrator’s Guide for Software and Server Provisioning and Patching 10g Release 5 (10.2.0.5.0) E14500-03" chapter 3.5 and chapter 20. I own an CSI
In chapter 3.5.2.2, the installation of the yum-repository is described. It reads:
    11. Type the command up2date nox show-channels to verify the list of subscribed channels.
-> this works well, the server is subscribed to x86_64/latest and x86_64/addon
    12. Once the deployment procedure completes successfully, goto Setup, select Patching Setup, and then select Manage RPM Repository to verify if the ULN channels are displayed in the Enterprise Manager Console.
    13. In the Manage Repository Homepage, check if all the subscribed channels are listed and if all the packages are downloaded.
There is only Setup -> Patching Setup -> Linux Patching Setup -> Manage RPM Repository
The server is shown on the list of configured rpm repositories, but there are no channels!? There is only an empty list...
It is possible to retrieve new packages from UTN, but there is no way to update my other servers.
If I register a custom channel, I may patch my hosts, but cannot receive new packages...
I'm not sure how to continue, maybe s/o my help?
    Kind regards,
    Andreas

I asked earlier "And what flavour of Linux are you running?". I believe your linux has a name. Is it any of the two mentioned above (Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux)? If yes, what versions are they? If no, then the message is clear.

  • How do I configure Apache for Virtual Hosts?

This is whatI've done so far: I have a static IP. I have a registered domain name that points to this IP. I've made my sites in iWeb. Set up my computer for Personal Web Sharing. I've used Smultron to edit the httpd.conf files per this tutorial : http://www.macminicolo.net/videos/ServerVideo6.mov. Still no luck. I can't access the site from the internet.
Can anyone shed some light ?

  • Configure DNS on Snow Leopard Server for Web Hosting

    Hi Everyone,
I put together an article on my blog about Snow Leopard DNS setup for web hosting. http://www.mkahn.com/?p=279
I'll be revising it over the next few weeks to make it more informative based around feedback. Let me know if you have any questions or trouble setting up DNS on Snow Leopard Server for web hosting.

Thanks for your replies. I realize I'm not making clear the way this network is configured . Also, the only services running on the Snow Leopard server are (at this time):
    dhcpd - in the 10.136.31.x range;
    dns - same as before;
    planned to add are:
    Open Directory (for network logins)
    Software update;
    Web (only on the 10.136.31.x Ethernet);
    mySQL (localhost only - for moodle);
NAT is not set up on the Snow Leopard server itself. We have an outside router, a Cisco 2811. This router provides routing for both the public IP range, and the NAT range is configured in this router. The forwarding dns is located in LR and Fayetteville. So what I need is dns on Snow Leopard to forward outside queries to the state DNS servers, and resolve the local NAT IP only for Open Directory and a set of Snow Leopard clients.
Is this going to be possible?

  • DNS settings for virtual host 10.6 server

We have just gone through a rebranding exercise, i.e. the company name has changed from 'mycompany' to our 'ourcompany'.
For various reasons we have decided to not rename our complete setup, but rather add a virtual host for our mail server including a second primary DNS zone for the new domain 'ourcompany'.
We are hosting our website externally, however since we added the second primary DNS zone incl. an A record (www) pointing to our external website hosts IP for 'ourcompany', workstations on our LAN can no longer access the website.
Running DIG for 'www.ourcompany.com.au' results in the correct A record IP address being shown, but it is still not showing in any browser – we also made sure we emptied our caches.
Although we thought this should work relatively easily, we are now totally confused as to the additional primary zones general settings... currently we allow zone transfer and provide an entry in the nameserver section.
Any ideas as to what might be going on here would be greatly appreciated.

    Mr. Hoffman,
Than you very much for your reply - unfortunately, despite studying and testing your advice (incl. wesbite) we seem to not get much further.
Please find our comments inserted below...
    MrHoffman wrote:
FWIW, both mycompany.com.au and ourcompany.com.au are real and registered domains; I'll presume they're not the domains you're migrating from or to.  Accordingly, I'll use example.org for your old stuff, and example.com for your new stuff; the example domains are RFC-reserved for this usage.
Correct we are not using my bad example domains.
Each host should have one A record (and one AAAA record, if you have IPv6 active), and one of the more common errors in these migrations is setting up an A record for each new domain that might arrive; each host has one A (and possibly one AAAA) record, and that's the canonical name for that host.  Externally, that'll probably be the latest name in any sequence (such as www.example.com), and all previous names (including www.example.org) will have CNAME entries.
To clarify do you mean the following: internally we should not have more than one A record for each host... i.e. one for example.org and one for example.com and presumably any other subdomains should be CNAME records?
    2. externally we should change the A record for www.example.org to a CNAME record and create a new A record for www.example.com;
Internally (and here's why having a different domain inside is handy) use one of the old names; use example.org, for instance.  This means you can use the public DNS services for the external web sites and resources; your internal DNS servers receive the requests for example.com hosts and go "duh, lemme ask somebody else for that", and that somebody else is the (public) DNS server your external DNS services for example.com hosts.
Exactly what we had initially done - basically we (naively) thought we could get away with only relying on external DNS translations... however that resulted in mail clients on our LAN loosing their connection every 5-10 minutes, thus we decided to setup another primary DNS zone which fixed that problem but created the other.
Please also note we have created a subdomain admin.example.com which properly resolves to the CMS backend - btw. from within this backend you can then preview the any page on the regular website with their non www. URLs.
Since the current setup resolves to the correct IP address I wonder if it could be a problem with the .htaccess rewrite rules the web developer has setup to remove the www. ... or is this too far fetched?
The usual trigger for not reaching the external A (or AAAA) records is either a stale cache on the particular client (for translations inside the Time To Live (TTL) values for the old DNS translations, or pending a local cache flush on each client), or (and this is more common) confusion over authoritative DNS servers; you have your internal DNS configured as authoritative for the new www.example.com domain, and also authoritative for the old www.example.org domain, and your external DNS is also authoritative for (probably) both domains.  Internal requests get as far as the internal server, and get an authoritative translation (possibly being "no such host"), and don't go any further.
Safari & Firefox present with 'Server not found' errors.
So we are still stuck thus any further advice would be much appreciated.

  • Set up reverse DNS for virtual mail hosting

I need a bit of server configuation advice.
I have a static IP and two public domains on a Snow Leopard server connected using NAT behind a firewall - with the necessary port forwarding to ensure all works.
    1. abc.com is my primary domain on the server - server.abc.com
    2. I have xyz.com set up as a virtual domain and also as a virtual mail host
This setup has worked well for a long time but I have found that emails to [email protected] are going missing.  If I check my mx records using one of the web based tools it show an error on the reverse dns for server.xyz.com showing a reverse DNS of server.abc.com.
So the question - is it possible to have secondary 'virtual' DNS record on the server so reverse DNS works for the virtual mail host xyz.com?  If not how do I handle the reverse DNS problem which i think is causing some external mail server to reject mail due to the inconsistency on the reverse DNS lookup?
    Many thanks for any suggestions

SMTP requires a DNS A record.
A DNS A record is also known as a machine record.
A DNS A record inherently means that forward DNS and reverse DNS will match.
The forward translation translates the host name to the IP address.
The reverse translation translates the IP address to host name.
When the full translation produces the same host name, that's an A record.
DNS CNAME records are aliases, and are used for virtual hosts.
CNAME records inherently do not match the reverse DNS translations.
To get your configuration to work, your server must have an A record.
That means forward and reverse DNS will match.
Any of the virtual hosts within your mail server then all use an MX pointing at the A record host.
If you have your DNS hosted somewhere other than your ISP, then you'll need your ISP to set up a DNS PTR.
The DNS PTR is the reverse translation; address to name.
If you have your own DNS services within your network (as would be typical with a privately-addressed NAT'd network), set that up as a virtual host within SMTP.
Here is some related reading on external (public) DNS, as related to SMTP servers and such.

  • What is my DNS for my new website setup?

What is my DNS for my new website setup?
I am registering my new Domain name with an outside website service (not iWeb). Namecheap.com
What Mac OS X 10.8.2 DNS do I use for my server setup with thru their business? They have asked me this question. Or do I use their default servers as they suggest?
Please help. Thank you in advance for your advice.

It's not entirely clear what you're asking. Are you asking what data you have to provide to your domain registrar? Or are you asking for some configuration data for your machine?
Are you planning/hoping to use your Mac OS X Server as the authoritative DNS server for your domain? (this is usually a bad idea unless you really know what you're doing).
If you're setting up the remote domain on your registrar's servers then there's nothing you need to do for your machine. For simplicity's sake you don't need to do any DNS for your domain on your own server - let the service provider do that. If you want to setup your domain internally as well, then I'd recommend disconnecting your public records (hosted by your service provider) from your private ones (running on your own machine) since you will likely want to hide your internal network addresses from the public.

  • Configuring Lync for External use

    Hi,
I'm trying to expand our use of Lync, which is currently IM/presence-only for internal staff. I've been asked to set up Lync so we can communicate with 3rd parties.
    Lync configuration:
    SIP addresses = [email protected]
    FE server = aglync.corp.domain.com
Edge server = dmzlync.corp.domain.com (yes, it's on the domain)
There are few obstacles that I've already encountered/changed:
The IT guy who set up this server used an internal FQDN for the external services (ie. dialin.corp.domain.com)
The SIP addresses don't match the SMTP addresses
I can't break the internal deployment of Lync while I change things and get external Lync working
I'm in the midst of making changes, as best I can without impacting current users, and I'm stuck on the autodiscover. So far, I've:
changed my SIP address in Lync to match my email address ([email protected]).
added that domain as an additional SIP domain.
Changed some of the public URLs
    Generated new certificates/refreshed the topology.
    External DNS: lyncdiscover.company.com (CNAME) = lyncweb.company.com
lyncweb.company.com = x.x.x.x (public IP for Edge server)
meet.company.com = x.x.x.y (public IP that's translated to FE server)
I know there are a host of issues still to work through, but I'm trying to tackle them one at a time. First up is autodiscover.
    1) When I run the Remote Connectivity Analyzer, I'm told that autodiscover resolves to the right IP address, but port 443 isn't responding. Is there a URL I can test directly against the internal IP to confirm that this isn't the issue?
    2) When I run the Lync Connectivity Analyzer, internal tests resolve okay, but the external tests fail (including the mobile tests). Part of the log reads as follows:

[3/28/2014 1:27:50 PM] [SUMMARY_ERROR] Server discovery failed for secured external channel against
    https://lyncdiscover.company.com/
I don't know where to begin on this issue - is it a setup issue? Is it because I'm trying to log in with a SIP address that wasn't deployed originally? I'm looking for clues that'll help me track down the issue.
    Thanks,
    Greg

meet.company.com can not be your Meeting URL and the FQDN of your Edge Services.
    Meet/Lyncdiscover/Dialin/External Web Services (lyncweb.company.com)
will all point to Reverse proxy 443-4443 to the FE server
sip.company.com(or whatever FQDN assigned to the Edge) will point to your Edge Public IP.

  • Creating a DNS Record for a Host with Two or More IP???

Can we create DNS A Record for a Host with Two or More IP ... ( we like to use my website  "mysite.com" pointing to two Ips )
    Please help...

    Sure, no worries.
In a production environment DNS will query always the first record it will stores in cache, you need to find a dynamic or NLB way to achieve the automatic fail over else when you will have an outage with the first IP, then you need to ask your clients to
clear the cache and register to DNS again, this i will not suggest in a production environment, lots of manual efforts and doesnt sound like a solution in a production environment, i would suggest you to explore windows NLB, it's easy to set and use the OS
    license.
    Thanks
