  • MacBook + Apple external  modem

I was given a brand-new MacBook at work and a brand-new Apple USB modem to take home, where I only have dial-up.
When I open Internet Connect, it comes up under the BlueTooth tab. I put in all the info and it won't even dial. I wish I had written down the error message (can't check it now) but basically it says it "can't open Internet Connect". Does this mean it's not recognizing the modem?
I tried to "edit configurations" and noticed there are 4 versions of Apple external modems there, and I tried all 4 with no luck.
    Any ideas?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Connect the modem to the USB port. Open Network preferences and select External Modem then click on Configure button. Click on the TCP/IP tab and set the Configure IPv4 drop down menu to DHCP and click on Apply Now button. Then click on the PPP tab and fill in your ISP information, user ID, password and telephone number (these are for your dial up account.) Click on Apply Now button. Click on the Modem tab. Select the Apple External Modem V.92 from the drop down menu. Check the box labeled "Show Modem Status in Menu Bar." Click on the Apply Now button. You should be all set. Quit System Preferences. From the modem status menu bar item select Connect.

  • Fax modem won't work - Apple USB external modem

I am new to Mac, well relatively.... It's been 8 years, and now I am back!!
Anyway, I got an iMac 3 weeks ago, and love it. However, I can't get my external modem/fax modem working. I bought the Apple USB external modem, hooked it up, setup a fax printer, and NOTHING. I try to print to the fax and it won't even dial. I call the fax number, and it won't answer. I know it's a live phone line b/c I can hook it up to my fax machine and it works fine, both for incoming and outgoing messages. Is there a trick? Do I have to set up an actual external modem interface in the networks panel just to use an existing phone line? Thanks for your help....

You actually need to configure your iMac as a fax machine to send and receive faxes through the Apple USB modem.
    From Faxing in Mac Help in the Finder Help menu;
*To set up your Mac to receive faxes*:
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Print & Fax.
    2. Select the fax modem in the Printers list.
    3. Type your fax number in the Fax Number field. This is used to identify your computer when you send or receive a fax.
    4. If you want to control your computer’s fax functions from the menu bar, select “Show fax status in menu bar.” If you don’t want to receive faxes automatically, you must select this option. If you receive faxes automatically, you may want to select this option so you can view status information more easily.
    5. Click Receive Options.
    6. Select “Receive faxes on this computer,” and choose the number of rings before your computer answers a fax.
    a. If you want to receive faxes automatically, make sure your computer answers the phone before any other device that may be connected to it, such as a phone answering machine.
    b. If you don’t want to receive faxes automatically, set the number of rings to the highest number possible, and use the Fax status menu to receive faxes manually.
    7. Choose what to do with the fax after it arrives; you can save it as an image file, email it, and print it to a printer.
    *To send a fax:*
    1. Choose File > Print, and then choose Fax PDF from the PDF pop-up menu.
    2. Type the fax number in the To field, or click the Address Book button to the right of the To field to select a number. If you want to paste a number into the To field and the Edit > Paste command isn’t available, hold down the Control key as you click the To field and choose Paste from the menu that appears.
    3. If your phone system requires you to dial a prefix for an outside line, type it in the Dialing Prefix field.
    4. If you want to include a cover page, select “Use Cover page” and enter a subject and message.
    5. Make sure the correct fax device is selected from the Printer pop-up menu.
    6. To change your options, choose the option category from the print options pop-up menu. For example, to choose your modem’s behavior when faxing, choose Fax Modem. You can choose whether to dial with touch tones or pulse tones, whether to listen to the modem as it dials, and whether to wait for a steady dial tone before dialing.
    7. Click Fax.

  • Connecting to an external modem

When I first purchased my PowerMac G4 back in March 2003, the first mac I ever bought, it was to add to my ethernet network and came without an airport card. Under the operating system it came with (OS X something) I manually configured an external modem to connect to the internet for systems up grads etc. Later, I bought an airport card when my network went wireless, but due to antenna problems it never worked satisfactorily. Consequently, some several O/S upgrades later, I now want to connect the G4 to my wireless modem, for internet and network access via an ethernet cable. However I can no longer find where I have to configure the modem? Can anyone please advise.

  • MA034 Apple external modem

Victim of late-night eBaying, I find myself with an Apple MA034 external modem which I only bought thinking that I could use it to send/receive FAXes occasionally. I imagined plugging it into the phone line and running FAX software (what software??) on my Mac...
Is this possible? Especially, have you done it?

Yes, it does show as you say, as 'External Modem, not configured'. Configuration requires a Telephone no., Account Name and Password, which sounds like it assumes a straight-forward dial-up connection to an ISP. I, however, want to be able to Fax occasionally which needs no ISP, just a fax machine at the other end. And, of course, some software - Mac or 3rd party - to generate the dialling codes. (Just in case my Mac 'just works (tm)' I put in a known fax number, rubbish username and pwd and pressed Connect. It just hung around and disconnected).
I'm still trying to establish whether you or anyone has actually used a Mac + MA034 to send a fax and, if so, what needed to be done to do so. If this combination can be set up to receive them in the background as well, so much the better!

  • External Modem Settings not locking

    Hi,
After numerous troubles with AOL I finally managed to get my Mum online with her new Mac Mini a few weeks ago, however since doing that she always has to manually change her settings to "External Modem" in Network prefs, it doesn't stay defaulted to those settings.
Anything I can try to change this?

    You're Welcome IntelMacMini!
To delete the pref files, Navigate to:
HD > USERS > YOUR HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES
    If present, move to Trash:
    com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist (a file)
I can't be sure these settings will work for you. It's the configuration that works for Dial-Up on my iMac. But it may give you some clues. You may need to make some adjustments, according to your system, and connection.
    Open System Preferences > Network
In each of these panels, after you have made your selections or changes, be sure to click on the "Apply Now" button in the lower right corner, if it's available.
    Location: Select "Automatic"
Show: Select "External Modem", or however you connect.
On the PPP screen, click "PPP Options". CHECK ONLY THESE options:
    "Send PPP echo packets"
    "Use TCP header compression"
    Click OK
On the TCP/IP screen, Configure using IPv4: Select "Using PPP"
On the Modem screen, Select your modem from the list. I'm using an iMac (Summer 2001), and I have "Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)" selected. Select your External modem.
Check "Enable error correction and compression in modem"
"Wait for dial tone before dialing"
    "Dialing": Tone
    "Sound": On
"Show modem status in menubar" (This isn't really necessary, but it's handy.)
    Also select your Country.
    Then, still in "Network" preferences,
    Location: "Automatic"
    Show: "Network Port Configurations"
Make sure "External Modem", or however you connect, is checked and at the top of the list.
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the screen.
    Quit System Preferences.
Depending on the ISP, before you sign on, you may have to reset your "Access Numbers" & "Location".
As there also are other issues, I suggest that Repair Disk & Repair Permissions be run as well.
    Good Luck!

  • SHDSL using an external modem

    Hello,
Just wondering if it is a possible to configure a Cisco 2611XM for SHDSL using an external modem such as the RAD product ASMi-52 which does the line sync for you.
The CHAP authentication needs to be done by the router behind it (2611XM in this case).
I've never done this without a wic, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Leo,
Is PPPoE used for SHDSL? sorry for the silly question !
A standard SHDSL connection with a WIC looks like this:
    interface ATM0
    no ip address
    no atm ilmi-keepalive
    dsl equipment-type CPE
dsl operating-mode GSHDSL symmetric annex B
    dsl linerate AUTO
    interface ATM0.1 point-to-point
    description INTERNET
    pvc 1/34
    ubr 1024
    encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer
    dialer pool-member 1
    interface Dialer1
    description INTERNET
    ip address negotiated
    ip nat outside
    encapsulation ppp
    dialer pool 1
    dialer-group 1
    no cdp enable
    ppp authentication chap callin
    ppp chap hostname xxxxxxxxx@xxxxxx
    ppp chap password xxxxxxxxxx
    crypto map mymap
In my scenario, I'm not using the WIC, so I'm a bit confused as to how the configuration shouyld like as I have no ATM interface.

  • Error while configuring external LDAP user store with weblogic

    Hi,
I have weblogic 10.3 installed and I can access weblogic admin console using weblogic (admin) user. I want to use external ldap user store to access admin console with users present in external ldap.
To do this, I have configured authentication provider and provided all the required details to connect to ldap.
    For example:
Base DN: cn=admin,cn=Administrators,cn=dscc (user with which we will connect to LDAP)
    User DN: ou=People,dc=test,dc=com
    Group DN: ou=Groups,dc=test,dc=com
This authentication provider is set to SUFFICIENT mode. I have deleted the default authentication provider.
In the boot.properties file I have given the user name and password of the user with which LDAP instance was created something like below.
    password=xxxxxxx
    username=admin
Now while starting the admin weblogic server, I am getting the below error:

Can anyone please suggest how to resolve this problem? If, anyone can suggest the exact steps to configure external ldap store to manage admin console via ldap users.
    Regards,
    Neeraj Tati.

    Hi,
Please refer the below content that I found for Oracle 11g in the docs.
"If an LDAP Authentication provider is the only configured Authentication provider for a security realm, you must have the Admin role to boot WebLogic Server and use a user or group in the LDAP directory. Do one of the following in the LDAP directory:
By default in WebLogic Server, the Admin role includes the Administrators group. Create an Administrators group in the LDAP directory, if one does not already exist. Make sure the LDAP user who will boot WebLogic Server is included in the group.
The Active Directory LDAP directory has a default group called Administrators. Add the user who will be booting WebLogic Server to the Administrators group and define Group Base Distinguished Name (DN) so that the Administrators group is found.
If you do not want to create an Administrators group in the LDAP directory (for example, because the LDAP directory uses the Administrators group for a different purpose), create a new group (or use an existing group) in the LDAP directory and include the user from which you want to boot WebLogic Server in that group. In the WebLogic Administration Console, assign that group the Admin role."
Now in my LDAP directory, setup is in such a way that Administrators is a group created under following heirarchy " cn=Administrators,ou=Groups,dc=test,dc=com" and there is one user added in this Administrators group.
The problem that I am having is when I modify the Admin role in which Administrators group should be added what exaclty I should give in Admin role. Whether I should give only Administrators or full DN: cn=Administrators,ou=Groups,dc=test,dc=com ???
When i give full DN, it takes every attribute as different, i mean cn=Administrators as different and ou=Groups as different and shows a message that cn=Administrators does not exist.
Here not sure what to do.
Also if external ldap authentication provider is the only provider then I need to give the user information in boot.properties file also for weblogic to boot properly. Now, what should I give there in user? still complete DN ??
    Regards,
    Neeraj Tati.

  • Connect iPhone to external modem?

Maritime and emergency workers need to access the web and email over a satellite connection when there is no cellular service available. Although this is a lot slower than a cellular connection, it is better than nothing.
Can I set up the networking on an iPhone to access the internet via a PPP connection over an external modem? I would connect the external modem to the iPhone using either a USB connection (virtual serial port) or to a serial port on the iPhone if it has one.
Does the iPhone have the ability to drive a network connection through an external modem?
