Configure messaging server and MTA on different machine

Is there anyways to install / configure messaging server and MTA on different machine? I am using Sun One Messaging server 6.0
Thanks
Haris

Thanks for the reply, How MTA can be disabled on the
messaging server? how can i disable the store on the
MTA machine, Is there any documentation for it?Yes, the documentation helps you. You cannot totally disable the MTA. If you did, how would you get mail to the store?
Also
is it possible to use some another machine for
webmail?Well, um, kind of. The webmail interface provided with Messaging Server interacts directly with the store, so you can't truly run that remotely, but .. .
You can install the server on a remote box, and turn on "Messaging Express Multiplexor", a proxy for webmail. Users can then connect to the MEM box, and be forwarded to the store for their mails.
It should be possible to use a third-party webmail product that uses something like IMAP to talk to the store, too. that would be unsupported, but possible. Most users find MEM to be very good.
What problem are you trying to solve? Perhaps I can better help you if I know why you're asking these questions, and offer a better solution to you.

Thanks

• 10g: HTTP Server and OC4J on different servers?

Can anyone assist with configuring HTTP Server and OC4J on different servers?
I installed AS 10g on both; our application runs fine on one server, with the HTTP Server and OC4J both on the same box.
I need to also test this with the HTTP Server on a separate box.
I added this to mod_ocj4.conf:
Oc4jMount /indox-qa1
instance://cvodev2:oas_dev2.cvodev2.int.sys.com:indox-qa1
Oc4jMount /indox-qa1/*
instance://cvodev2:oas_dev2.cvodev2.int.sys.com:indox-qa1
But when I try to access something like http://cvodev4/indox-qa1 I get this in the logs:
[Wed Jul 06 16:54:10 2005] [warn] [client 10.1.1.231] [ecid: 1120683250:192.152.136.127:1248:1544:1,0] MOD_OC4J_0184: Failed to find an oc4j process for destination: instance://cvodev2.int.camsys.com:oas_dev2.cvodev2.int.camsys.com:indor-qa1

I did some ethernet sniffing and it doesn't look to me like the OHS box is even trying to contact the OC4J box.
Is there more configuration I need to do beyond this?
Thanks,

• Should Admin Server run on a different machine

Hi,
Is there any recomendation from BEA on running the AdminServer(where to
run)?
For the best approach (production environment), should admin server run on a
different machine that does
not have any managed server?
I read in the docs that BEA recommends having the no. of weblogic instance
be less than
or equal to the number of CPU's. Assuming that I have 1 CPU machine, then
running the AdminServer and one managed server on this machine, would this
mean a performance problem or any other problems?
Please advise.
Thanks and Regards,
Sriram.C.S

I typically recommend that customers run the Admin server on a separate
machine (a 1 CPU machine is sufficient) so that the admin server, the
configuration information, and all of the applications are installed on
a machine that is not handling traffic. This not only makes the admin
server more responsive and potentially not accessible to other users, it
keeps all of the configuration information on a machine that is less
likely to crash since it isn't really doing anything most of the time.
In addition, the admin server is not currently clusterable so you should
install it on a non-clustered server.
Just my two cents,
Robert

Hi Denis,
The below is the Wiki which i have created, please go through the notes.
Configure SLD for JCo and Creation of JCo Destinations
To create JCo connections you need to configure SLD (System Landscape Directory) first and then create JCo destinations.
First let’s see as how to configure SLD.
Start Visual Administrator.
To start it
1) Go to Server Installed path i.e. usr\sap\<systemid>\<systeminstance>\J2ee\admin
2) Choose go.bat and start it.
3) Under Global Server Configuration, choose <Serverid>.
4) Choose Services under it.
5) Find SLD Data Supplier.
6) Under System Landscape Directory select HTTP Settings.
7) Give all the required fields like Host Name, Port Number, User Name and Password.
8) Similarly choose CIM Client Generation Settings and give Host Name, Port Number, User Name and Password.
9) You can test the SLD is configured properly or not. Just click CIM Client Test.
10) Save the settings and close Visual Administrator.
Now that you have configured SLD through Visual Administrator, we can create JCo Connections. To create JCo connections
1) You will need Super Administrator permissions to create JCo’s.
2) Log on to the Portal.
3) Go to Content Administration  Web Dynpro
4) Since we have configured SLD, now we can see a button to “Create JCo Destination”. Click it
5) Now you can observe Create new JCo Destination on right side panel.
6) Give the Following Details.
a) General Data:
Name: Give the name of JCo
Client: Give the Client number to which system you want to create JCo for. Click Next.
b) J2EE Cluster: Check the Use Local J2EE engine. Click Next.
c) Connection Type: Select Dictionary Meta Data. Click Next.
d) Application Server Connection: Select the existing Message Server and Logon Group.
It might sometimes happen that Message Server and Logon Group is not configured to configure them, follow the process
For Message Server:
i. Log on to SDL through portal i.e. http://<servername>:<portnumber>/sld
ii. Choose Technical System. Click it.
iii. You will observe New Technical System button, click it.
iv. System Type: Select Web AS ABAP , if you want to connect to R/3 System and incase you are using Java application use Web AS Java
v. General: Log on to R/3 System through SAP Log on pad. Go to System  Status, check for SID, Installation Number and Database Host Name.
vi. Central Servers: Give Host Name and Port Number and Instance Number.
For Logon Group:
i. Click on Add New Logon Group, this will open a row in the table.
ii. Log on to R/3 through Logon pad and get Logon Groups ids and the transaction code is “SMLG”.
vii. Application Servers: Click on Add Application Server and then give Host Name and Instance Number of R/3 System.
viii. Clients: Give Client number (System id) and Logical Client Name (which we can get from SMLG code). And click finish.
7) Message Server Connection:
i. Name: Give the logon name of R/3 System
ii. Password & Confirm Password: Give appropriate password of R/3 System.
8) Click Finish.
regards
Anil

• "Windows Authentication Mode" when SQL Server 200 and CF on different machines?

Hi All,
I am playing for two days with following problem. And still I
did not able to get rid of it.
I have installed SQL Server 2000 on machine which is my
server (windows 2003 server) and this machine is my domain
controller. I have user “ABC” user and I have added
this user in administrator group.
I have another machine where OS is Windows XP and CF 7 is
installed. I create an ODBC Connection from Administrative Tool to
my Database (windows 2003 server) successfully.
Now when I create Data Socket in Coldfusion Administrator and
when I select the my ODBC that I had created and when I Submit it
then CF admin throughs the following message.
Connection verification failed for data source: myTest
java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SequeLink JDBC
Driver][ODBC Socket][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL
Server]Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.
Please Brother, I don’t have any Clue to solve it,
Please help.
One Important thing, All this working fine if my CF, and SQL
Server are on same machine.
Best regards,
Shahid

Hi Phil Thanks,
Finally i able to configure it out..... following are the
steps...
I assume domain controller is properly configure.
Following are the steps for the machine where SQL SERVER 2000
is installed
1- We need to create Login account for your domain account in
SQL Server 2000 using Enterprise Manager.
• Right Click -> New Login
• Click to load the domain users, select any user from
your domain that will connect to your SQL Server from LAN.
Following are the steps for the machine where ColdFusion and
IIS are installed.
Step No. 1
Stop ColdFusion MX.
Backup your existing macromedia_drivers.jar file.
Unzip macromedia_drivers.zip into the same directory,
overwriting the previous
macromedia_drivers.jar.
You can download “macromedia_drivers.zip” from
following URL
http://kb.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/ts/documents/1a3c2ad0/macromedia_drivers.zip
A new file, DDJDBCAuth03.dll, which is required for Windows
Authentication, is also included in the zip file replacing the
older DDJDBCAuth.DLL.
Restart ColdFusion MX.
ColdFusion MX loads the JDBC drivers inmacromedia_drivers.jar
in the directory cf_root/lib. For example, with ColdFusion MX 7
Server Configuration on Windows installed on drive C:, this would
beC:\CFusionMX7\lib\macromedia_drivers.jar.
Then restart Machine
Step No. 2
Configure all the ColdFusion Services to “Log On
As” using the Domain User Account configured in SQL Server in
the above mentioned step.
Change the “Log On As” similar for the all other
Cold fusion services (ColdFusion MX 7 ODBC Agent, ColdFusion MX 7
ODBC Server, ColdFusion MX 7 Search Server).
Step No. 3
Restart the services; for the safe side reboot the system.
Step No. 4
Create ODBC (Control Panel -> Administrative Tool ->
Data Sources (ODBC)) using the windows NT Authentication option to
connect to database.
Step No. 5
Create Data Socket and Select the created ODBC connection in
the Drop down (ColdFusion-> Admin)
Thanks to all who participated in this discussion...
With lots of Thanks to All particular to Phil who guided me
in right direction,
Shahid

• Webserver and UCM in different machines

As the title said.. how do I do this? in the installation guide it's just for both in one machine but how do i install webserver in a windows server and UCM in a unix server?
Is this even possible? please some advice or redirect to some solution,
Thanks

Hi
Look at Note : 885983.1 on metalink . This gives the steps to configure Cs when webserver is on a different machine altogether.

• Integrating Messaging Server and Identity Server

I've got JES 2004Q2, and I'm trying to install the various components on different workstations to prove that a) the software works, and b) it's a viable alternative to Exchange (so please please help me get it working!)
The problem I have is getting Messenger Server and Directory Server talking properly so that I can create users and then log in as those users. After days of frustrating searching for solutions to this problem (and also find people who have successfully done this), I decided to install the components onto one server.
And it worked. Installing Messaging Server, Identity Server, Web Server (contained for Identity Server), Directory Server, and Admin Server all on the same box, configuring them all to use the same directory server for UG and preferences, running the various configuration tools that come with the software, and it all works together fine. Using "./commadmin domain modify .... -S mail", I get "OK". I can add users with the "-S mail" option, log in as those users, and send emails between those users. So this tells me that the software does work, albeit on one box.
When I try to separate the services out to separate boxes, they don't seem to integrate properly. I thought that maybe the order in which you configured applications made a difference (ie. configuring Identity Server after Messenger Server means IS will pick up on the changes made to the directory by MS, and enable it). I also tried to see if using the same options directory server from different boxes helped, but nothing. I've even tried patching them using 116568-52 and 116585-10 but no luck.
Therefore, I've found that installing all servers on one box works, but installing them on separate boxes doesn't (despite using the same directory servers). My conclusion in this is that one of two things must be the case:
a) there's something in the install that has to be changed to reflect the fact that the services are running on different boxes
b) the install of the services adds files to the system somewhere which other packages in JES pick up on (hence the reason why installing everything on one box works), and this isn't documented anywhere
Unfortunately, the output of commadmin when it fails isn't that helpful (nothing against the developers, however it doesn't really help in the fault finding process). I do believe however that the problem is with Identity Server and its configuration, rather than Messaging Server.
Here's some (possibly) useful info:

Can anyone give me any suggestions? If I log a support call with Sun, what is the likely resolution time? My ultimate goal is to get the whole suite running together, then install Portal server. Once that's working, download the connectors for Outlook and get it all working with Outlook. As I said at the start, we're hoping to show this is a viable alternative to Exchange (certainly for the backend) so any help will be greatly appreciated!

We've got google for domains setup, so users would retain a @domain.com address regardless if there mailbox was hosted on the internal server or hosted at google. You can make use of the mailRoutingAddress: user attribute and source routing to get the desired behaviour e.g.
=> Set the following value to the LDAP entry of the user who is hosted on the gmail server. The "[email protected]" address should match the users mail: address:
mailRoutingAddress: @gmail.com:[email protected]=> Ensure the following option has been tcp_local channel in your imta.cnf file. This option strips off the "@gmail.com" value of the recipient address before sending the email to the gmail.com servers.

• Messaging Server and Calendar Server Mount points for SAN

Hi! Jay,
We are planning to configure "JES 05Q4" Messaging and Calendar Servers on 2 v490 Servers running Solaris 9.0, Sun Cluster, Sun Volume Manager and UFS. The Servers will be connected to the SAN (EMC Symmetrix) for storage.
I have the following questions:
1. What are the SAN mount points to be setup for Messaging Server?
I was planning to have the following on SAN:
- /opt/SUNWmsgsr
- /var/opt/SUNWmsgsr
- Sun Cluster (Global Devices)
Are there any other mount points that needs to be on SAN for Messaging to be configured on Sun Cluster?
2. What are the SAN mount points to be setup for Calendar Server?
I was planning to have the following on SAN:
- /opt/SUNWics5
- /var/opt/SUNWics5
- /etc/opt/SUNWics5
3. What are the SAN mount points to be setup for Web Server (v 6.0) for Delegated Admin 1.2?
- /opt/ES60 (Planned location for Web Server)
Delegated Admin will be installed under /opt/ES60/ida12
Directory server will be on its own cluster. Are there any other storage needs to be considered?
Also, Is there a good document that walks through step-by-step on how to install Messaging, Calendar and Web Server on 2 node Sun Cluster.
The installation document doesn't do a good job or atleast I am seeing a lot of gaps.
Thanks

Hi,
There are basically two choices..
a) Have local binaries in cluster nodes (e.g 2 nodes) ... which means there will be two sets of binaries, one on each node in your case.
Then when you configure the software ..you will have to point the data directory to a cluster filesystem which may not be neccasarily global. But this filsystem should be mountable on both nodes.
The advantage of this method is that ... during patching and similar system maintenance activities....the downtime is minimum...
The disadvantage is that you have to maintain two sets of binaries ..i.e patch twice.
The suggested filesystems can be e.g.
/opt for local binaries
/SJE/SUNWmsgr for data (used during configure option)
This will mean installing the binaries twice...
b) Having a single copy of binaries on clustered filesystem....
This was the norm in iMS5.2 era ...and Sun would recommend this...though I have seen type a) also for iMs 5.2
This means there should no configuration files in local fs. Everything related to iPlanet on clustered filesystem.
I have not come accross type b) post SUNONE i.e 6.x .....it seems 6.x has to keep some files on the local filesystem anyway..so b) is either not possible or needs some special configuration
so may be you should try a) ...
The Sequence would be ..
After the cluster framework is ready:
1) Insall the binaries on both side
2 ) Install agent on one side
3) switch the filesytem resource on any node
4) Configure the software with the clustered FS
5) Switch the filesystem resource on the other node and useconfig of first node.
Cheers--

• Servlet and EJB on different machine: Security propagation

Hi all,
I have an application, where my servlets and EJBS are deployed on the same machine. So
when in my servlet a user need to authenticate himself, security credentials are
propagated to the EJB automatically.I'd like to know in the case where the components
are on different machine if I need to put the credential in my InitialContext
when my servlet calls my EJB or if it is also done automatically.
Cheers
romain

Say your stub is in a jar called stub.jar.
You need to put that stub somewhere that it can be reached through a protocol for which Java has a URL type - so you can put it on a shared file system and use a file URL or behind an http server and use an http URL.
Let's use http - put stub.jar at the docroot of a web server.
Then, when you start your SERVER code, include this VM parameter:
-Djava.rmi.server.codebase="http://<serveraddress>stub.jar"
Now your client will be able to use http to load the stub file out of stub.jar through http.
If you do use a file URL, make sure the shared directory you put your jar in is not on the client's classpath.
