Configure Oracle Shared Server
Hi,
Can i shutdown the dispatcher (Shared server) when there is existing connection doing the transaction. as i discover the dispatcher causing the high CPU usage sometime. If Shutdown dispatcher, how to restart the dispatcher when the instance is up and running without restart the instance.

What about killing the kernel process as it too sometimes causes high CPU usage? How about killing the swap process daemon for the same reason? Why even bother booting the server at all when there will always be the risk of this situation occurring, that according to you is so bad that it needs to be responded with killing the "offending" process?
Surely, by your reasoning, the best approach to this problem and prevent processes from sometimes using "too much" CPU, is not running any processes at all - and simply not powerup the server.
Sounds stupid? Well, so does your killing of a dispatcher process based on high CPU usage, without identifying an actual problem, or even bothering to determine what is causing that symptom of high CPU usage.
The very first step to ANY IT or IS issue is "*Identify The Problem!*".
All you have observed is a symptom - high CPU usage. This is not a problem. You need to determine WHY it is happening and that will tell you whether there is a problem.
Simply wanting to kill the "offending" process? That is wrong. Period.

Question about Oracle Shared Server Performance
Is it true that the performance of the Oracle Shared Server on Windows plataformns, like 2003 server is poor. ?
And so that, I cant see any advantages to change its configuraton, on a 200 users configuration, where I can have at most 2.000 session.
Tks for help and some tips if you guys have them.
FernandoHi Fernando,
Is it true that the performance of the Oracle Shared Server on Windows plataformns, like 2003 server is poor. ? In general (not just Windows), shared servers (the MTS) should only be used if you have an acute RAM shortage.
Tom Kytes notes:
http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/ask/f?p=4950:8:::::F4950_P8_DISPLAYID:5269794407347
"Unless you have a real reason to use MTS -- don't."
"a shared server connection is by design "slower" than a dedicated server (more stuff goes on, more complex) it is most likely only getting in the way."
Also, remember that you can use AWE to take the data buffer above the line and free-up more low-memory RAM for connections. Here are my notes:
http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle_tips_ram_waste.htm
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_mts_multithreaded_servers_shared.htm
My experience concurs that Oracle shared servers should not be used without a compelling reasons (i.e. super high connect/disconnect rates on an instance with limited resources) and that the vast majority of Oracle databases will run more efficiently without shared servers.
Dedicated server connects are far faster than multi-threaded server connections, and 64-bit Oracle combined with the low cost of RAM has driven-down the rare cases where shared servers are justified.
Hope this helps. . .

Oracle Shared Server Session Scheduling
Hi,
We're currently evaluating the shared server architecture for production use. As far as we know, Oracle schedules N sessions across M operating system threads, dependent on the configured limits.
An essential requirement for our production system is to be able to associate a given operating system thread belonging to an Oracle shared server process with a session (more specifically the session owner) and maintain this information externally. Because a shared server thread may handle multiple sessions in random order with interruption, the assumption that a given thread and its corresponding thread identifier always processes a specific session throughout the thread lifetime is incorrect, thus we cannot directly associate a thread and session via the thread identifier.
Does Oracle provide a way to be notified (native callback) before and/or after a shared server level scheduling "session context switch" so that a thread id could be used to associate a thread with a session at any given time?
Thanks in advance for any insights!
cheers,
Horst ReitererYou can realize if your database is working in shared mode through several ways:
1.- Looking the background process at the OS level
2.- Looking some init parameters and other methods
What is your OS ?

How to configure Oracle HTTP server
Hi, I installed APEX 3.0 in Oracle 10.2.0.2 database. I installed HTTP server from Oracle 10.2.0 database companion CD. The problem is I am not sure which conf file I need to modify as in the installation document, it only shows steps for how to configure HTTP server 9.0.3/11g/Oracle Application Server 10g. Anybody knows where to get the right doc? Thanks.
Hi,
Configure the Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) from the companion CD is the same for other OHS (apart from OHS 9.x where it uses wdbsvr.app).
So just follow the install guide from

Configuring oracle management server 9i using create new repository option
hi ,
i am trying to install oracle management server using the the option "create new repository "on a system on which oracle database is already installed .after installing oracle management server "configuration assistant appears .the second option is to select a database repository .
first of all can i select the database that was prevouisly installed on my system
or do i need to create a new database before installing oracle management server. but as i did not install any database for oracle management server before i am trying to select the database that was previuosly installed on the system but i gave me a tns error that it could not resolve the service name .after that i noticed that the oms listerner was up and registered . i am trying to stop this listener and start the database listerner so that it may not give me this error.can some one help me out configuring oracle management server on a system creating a new repositoryI suggest you to create a different database for the OMS repository. This database can be used for other tools that may require a repository, such as recovery manager.
On the connectivity issue, I suggest you to verify your listener is up and running and it doesn't need to have the instance registered, as of course, it is a new instance. Make sure it is started. For additional troubleshooting on the connectivity issue, you may post the specific tns-12XXX error message displayed.

Oracle 10gr2 rac, ora-12545 error when configured in shared server mode
Hi i have fresh installation on two node rac on linux, with oracle 10gr2. It is running successfully, when i configure it in shared server mode and try to connect from client it gives error ora_12545:
I have referred the oracle metalink notes and configured the local_listener as well as the remote_listener,
still it is giving the error. I am able to tnsping all the entries on tnsnames.ora,
i m also able to ping the hostnames,
It connects most of the times succeessfully but some times it gives the error.
how to solve this problem,
please help meBasically this error means you misspelled the hostname or typed a wrong IP Address.
Oracle Error :: TNS-12545+
Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
Cause
The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist.
Action
Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again.
I suggest you to check the dispatcher instance parameter.

Configuring ODB Shared Server on 10G
Hi,
Can someone please recommend some books or sites to get more detailed information on configuring Shared Server on Oracle Database 10G? I've been reading what's available in 'Oracle Database Administrators Guide', but I'm still not very clear on some of the concepts.
Thank you in advance.Actually, the link you provided is what I've been reading. As for being more specific, it's difficult for me because I'm a newbie, and just barely learning something about this. I thought I was understanding everything fairly well, but then when I got to the part about dispatchers I started to doubt if I had really understood everything I had previously read about processes, shared servers, connections, and sessions. What I'm looking for is something that has a more in depth discussion about the shared server. I doubt anyone here would want to write a few pages about this, or go into a whole question and answer session about this, especially when I don't even really know yet what to ask yet.
Thanks for your help, but if there's anything else you or anyone can recommend to me I would greatly appreciate it. -
How to configure oracle 9i server
Hi,
I am a newbie to oracle. I need to configure oracle server for studying PL/SQL. I have SQL*Plus: Release 9.0.1.0.1 in it. I need a username and password on my localhost to login to it. I dont know how to run Oracle Database Server for it and how to create an user account. Could someone direct me how to do it? I just need to login to SQL Plus and study it.Do yourself a favor and deinstall 9i. It is obsolete and currently in desupport.
If your intent is to learn Oracle then download 11g and use it instead.
Then go to Morgan's Library at www.psoug.org and you can use the index to find demos you can use to learn all basic functionality.
Feel free to contact me off-line if you have questions about the library. -
Configuring Oracle Application Server to use a user friendly url
Hi All,
I am having trouble configuring the apache httpd.conf file within an applicaton server to be able to use user-friendly urls for the infrastructure identity management tools server. I also need this for security reasons as well as hardware reasons - loadbalancing.
At the moment I have a standard setup, whereby the sso application server is using port 7777. I would like the user not to enter the port, but to enter just a standard url, like http://login.<company>.com.au, so that if the user needs to modify oid using the oiddas web application, they can enter something like http://login.<company>.com.au/oiddas/ rather than http://<machine host name>:7777/oiddas/. This would also be used by portal for sso logins.
From the standard installation, Apache was configured as follows:
Port 7777
Listen 7777
ServerName <machine host name>
DocumentRoot <root document folder>
Now reading the documentation from the Oracle Application Server Installation notes for the Http Server, they document how to do this (in the loadbalancer section - this will eventually be used in the hardware setup):
Port 80
Listen 7777
Listen 80
# Virtual Hosts
# This section is mandatory for URLs that are generated by
# the PL/SQL packages of the Oracle Portal and various other components
# These entries dictate that the server should listen on port
# 7777, but will assert that it is using port 80, so that
# self-referential URLs generated specify www.oracle.com:80
# This will create URLs that are valid for the browser since
# the browser does not directly see the host server.oracle.com.
NameVirtualHost <machine ip>:7777
<VirtualHost <nameofmachine>:7777>
ServerName login.<company>.com.au
Port 80
</VirtualHost>
# Since the previous virtual host entry will cause all links
# generated by the Oracle Portal to use port 80, the server.company.com
# server needs to listen on 80 as well since the Parallel Page
# Engine will make connection requests to Port 80 to request the
# portlets.
NameVirtualHost <machine ip>:80
<VirtualHost <nameofmachine>:80>
ServerName login.<company>.com.au
Port 80
<VirtualHost>
Note that I used slightly different names for the url's rather than the oracle names www.oracle.com and server.oracle.com
Now after applying this, I noticed not only could I not go to the oiddas from the original machine name, but also couldnt go there from the new machine name.
Also I was not even able to go to the standard index page whereby you can go to the enterprise manager for the application server, from either names.
The following urls provide me with "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message:
http://login.<company>.com.au:7777/
http://<nameofmachine>:7777/
The following urls provide me with "Page Under Construction" error message:
http://login.<company>.com.au/
http://<nameofmachine>/
Could someone please tell me why this is the case, considering I am using the installation procedures Oracle has published within the Oracle Http Server Admistrators Guide (http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/web.1012/b14007/netconf.htm#sthref379).
Cheers
RodneyHi Rondey,
Ik think that I can see your probleem.
Just change the following line at your httpd.conf, then restart the component.
First of all if the port is installed with nr. 7777. then the listen process will be on port 7778
the second thing is just try to do the following steps
((Port 80 to Port 7777)))
Listen 7778
%%%% In loadbalancer section %%%%%%
just add the following lines
Listen 80
Listen 8103
Listen 8102
NameVirtualHost *
NameVirtualHost *:8103 or 80
If you want to use this ports (8103 or 8102) for other site (url), then
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName <machine ip> or (host name)
Hear from U,

Oracle shared server default connection
We are currently trying to use shared server on an Oracle 11.1.0.7 standard edition database.
We don't have any problem regarding parameters or performance yet. We can connect either with dedicated or shared connection.
Our problem or issue is with tnsnames.ora.
trdb =
(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = X.X.X.X)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = orcl)
We do not specify if this connection is shared neither dedicated. Connection defaults to dedicated and we would like to force that users connect to a shared server connection.
It would be really usefull to avoid having to go client by client on remote sites. We do no have any centralized management tool to change the file (not on remote sites).
We could, of course make the application to distribute a new file, but since every client is unique, it could be risky.Try to use SERVICE_NAME instead of SID in tnsnames.ora and make sure this service is mapped to a dispatcher in database init. file.
Example with 11.2.0.1:
1. DISPATCHERS parameter
SQL> show parameter dispatchers
NAME TYPE VALUE
dispatchers string (PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=DB112XDB)
max_dispatchers integer2. TNSNAMES.ORA:
$cat tnsnames.ora
DB112 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = lx01.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = DB112XDB)
)3. Test with SQL*Plus:
sqlplus system/xxx@DB112 @tss
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.1.0 Production on Mon Feb 15 21:37:35 2010

Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production

SQL> select username, program, server, service_name

Getting error while configuring Oracle CEP server in Eclipse
Hi,
While Configuring OCEP Server in eclipse, and specifying the Oracle Middleware Home Directory as "C:/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/ocep_domain/defaultserver"; I am getting the below error:
The location "C:/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/ocep_domain/defaultserver" contains the BEA home definition file "C:/Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/ocep_domain/defaultserver/registry.xml," but that file does not contain an Oracle CEP component entry with an "InstallDir" attribute.
I tried re-installing OCEP server, but still the problem persists. Please help me on this.

How to configure Oracle Management Server
Hi all,
first of all what is the difference between EM and OMS?
I am successful in launching EM but when i tried to take backup its saying that i need to do that using OMS. i want a step to step process for configuring OMS and also taking backup using EM.
plz help me
thanks in advanceThis should be pretty straight forward. EM by default doesn't configure any OMS, so most of the task requiring an OMS such as reorganization, imp/exp, sqlldr, log miner, among many others won't be available through the regular EM console.
OMS can be configure in a quite easy way with the emca command (Enterprise Manager Configuration Assistant). You may choose a default oms setup. Once it is ready and configured you can use it if you state the EM will use the oms to connect.
The first time you connect you must use a user named sysman whose password is oem_temp. You must change this default password the first time you login, and keep in mind your new password.
Once you are in, you will see several menus that were not available when you used the stand alone console. At this point feel free to ask if any particular issue arises.
