Configure RAID 5 on a G5 XServe

We have an XServe with 4 hard disks that we currently have configured to be RAID 1 but we would like to configure it so it can be RAID 5.
The current configuration has the drive with the OS mirrored and the drive for data mirrored. Is it possible to reconfgure it from scratch with a partition on one of the drives to hold the OS and the rest of the space on all of the other drives configured for RAID 5?
Thanks in advance.
XServe G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi,
I just happen to have two Apple RAID-Cards on my desk for our Xserves G5. Interestingly, they have 4 SATA connectors and 2 extra ports without connectors, total number of 6. The manual states the 4th port should not be used. Why should a card only for the Xserve G5 have 4 connectors, while G5 and Intel machines only have room for three HDs? G4 machines take four. For external use? Redundancy? Maybe the card was designed with the Xserve G4 in mind. As far as I know, PCI-X should be compatible to PCI, but then other hardware components of the Xserve G4 may not play nicely with that card. And you not only need the card, the Drive Modules must be SATA, too. Again, the manuals states the card conforms to PCI 2.2, 33 or 66 Mhz PCI.
I would test it but there is no Xserve G4 in the house.

  • Multiple RAID setups in one Xserve?

Hi hope you can help me, we are a small architecture practice in the market for a new server and we are considering an Xserve and Xserve RAID system. I would quite like to set up the Xserve unit to use two of the drives in RAID 1 to mirror the operating system. My question is it possible and/or wise to have multiple RAID sets in the Xserve RAID unit? For example using four of the bays for 4x500Gb in RAID 1 (1Tb storage) for projects, and then using another 2 bays for 2x250Gb in RAID 1 as well for say Mail, maybe even another 2 bays for holding user home accounts. I understand that with share points this isn't strictly necessary but it seems to make sense to keep functions separate across hard drives for quick replacements. Or is this a lot to ask of a single RAID controller?
Also how easy is to add storage to an existing RAID set-up without destroying the data?; say we wanted to increase the 1Tb project storage to 2Tb easily.
Thanks for your help in advance.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Andrew,
I think you are over complicating you setup.
If you do multiple RAID sets the you are really anti-optimiziung. If you asked "How can I get the least performance and lowest capacity out of a RAID?" then I would suggest three mirrored disks w/ spare per controller.
You would have far better performance and capacity if you were to put two drives in the Xserve to mirror, then set up your RAID as RAID 5 across 6 disks with 1 spare (default config).
With Disk Utility you can build multiple file systems on the RAID, so you could slice it up, but again that could be wasting space.
When you get the RAID setup as one file system do not share the root. Set up sub dirs to share:
/Volumes/Raid1 --your RAID root, aka mount point.
    /Volumes/Raid1/Mail -- mail
    /Volumes/Raid1/Users -- Home dirs
    /Volumes/Raid1/Projects -- your production storage
/Volumes/Raid1/Backup -- Save disk images of your server and workstations here.
And yes, changing the size of a file system means wiping it out and restoring from backup.
Also consider the 750GB drives, it's a lot more storage for not that much more money.

  • Is there a firmware update for the Apple RAID Card [early 2009 Xserve] that will take it beyond the E-1.3.2.0 version and allow it to see 4TB drives?

Is there a firmware update for the Apple RAID Card [early 2009 Xserve] that will take it beyond the E-1.3.2.0 version and allow it to see 4TB drives?

I have a few of these RAID cards in a couple servers, and then I have an earlier version of the RAID card in a few different servers.
The earlier servers are running non-apple 1.5 TB drives. It will be interesting to learn if this firmware update will indeed allow me to boost the capacity by installing non-apple drives, as the firmware previously has not.
Ohh I'm excited to update and try! This will greatly help out if it does!

Looks like c1t2d0 used to have a 33G filesystem on it, and you're seeing that on the concat device.
If it wasn't there before, you would have had to create a filesystem on it the device (newfs). You can do that now, or you can use 'growfs' to extend the existing filesystem to use the entire device.
However, it looks like you're using s7 for metadb replicas and s2 for the concat device. But those two slices overlap normally, so you should not do that. You don't show the layout, but if s7 is at the end of the disk, then you can fix this easily. Just create a new slice (like s0) that starts at cylinder 0 and uses all the cylinders that aren't in s7. If you don't fix this before doing the growfs, then the filesystem and the replicas are likely to corrupt each other.

  • Configure RAID 1 in a MCS7816-I4 CCX1

    Hi,
We have purchase a MCS7816-I4 CCX1, and have notice that the server has only one hard disk (the last time we say yes to a Cisco engineer without check)
I was wondering if is it posiible to puerchase a sencond HDD a configure RAID 1 between the two HDDs.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello, just one another thing , i always check with PDI for the exact equivelent for
the server from IBM , i am sure that MR10i is the only raid controller supported on the M2 series (7845), you have just to check the model of your server and the
supported raid controller ,i saw a couple of hours ago, that the M3 servers are required with BR10i , so please check with the PDI or the datasheet of the server to check the supported raid controller .
normall if you order the server as OEM from cisco then there should be a RAID controller installed.

  • Configuring RAID

I posted this in the wrong place the first time sorry.
I have the 865PS Neo2-pls motherboard. with 2 SATA device 120g maxtor attached. No OS loaded yet but intend to Windows XP Home. When in BIOS to set up raid I go to intgrated peripherals then to on-chip IDE configuration and set:
    on-chip ATA(s) operate more NATIVE
    ATA configuration S-ATA only
    SATA Enabled Yes
    PATA Enabled Yes
    P-ATA channel selection Both
Combined mode Option S-ATA first channel
    Sata ports definition P0-1ST./P1-2nd
but that is all there is this is NO configure raid option.
by the way the bios is AMIBIOS NEW SETUP UTILITY - VERSION 3.31a
    Can anyone help please.

Your board does not have the raid option. See this link for the various boards:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=528
    The 865PE Neo2-PFISR supports raid.
You will either need to change boards or get a PCI raid card.

  • Configuring RAID & Swap

I wanted to know if I configure my three identical disks as followed:
    /dev/sda
    - sda1 = /boot @ 4GB
    - sda2 = RAID @ 300GB
    /dev/sdb
    - sdb1 = Swap @ 4GB
    - sdb2 = RAID @ 300GB
    /dev/sdc
    - sdc1 = Swap @ 4GB
    - sdc2 = RAID @ 300GB
Now when I am done configuring RAID, will Arch Linux show I have 8GB of Swap space total under a tool like 'htop' or something like this? Will the above configuration work? Or Should I change it?

I have a machine that supports 4 S-ATA drives. I have all identical drives in each slot. I am asking for someone to please tell me how I can create a RAID5 array on Linux and then also have the 4th drive (/dev/sdd) as a hot spare for any of the three drives in the array / volume?
    I did the following:
    /device = type @ parition size
    /dev/sda1 = fd @ 100 MB (bootable for /boot)
/dev/sda2 = fd @ 1 GB (Going to be used for Swap)
    /dev/sda3 = fd @ 300 GB (Going to be used for /)
    Now I make the same thing for /dev/sdb & /dev/sdc. I DON'T PARTITION OR FORMAT /dev/sdd.
Now I am creating my RAID and this is where I am confused. How do I correctly issue the 'mdadm' command to create the volumes for my filesystem and also utilize /dev/sdd as a hot spare?
    (/boot)
    mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 --spare-devices=1 /dev/sdd
    (Swap)
    mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=1 --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 --spare-devices=1 /dev/sdd
    mdadm --create /dev/md2 --level=5 --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 /dev/sdc3 --spare-devices=1 /dev/sdd
Is that correct above or would I 1st have to partition the /dev/sdd drive?

it is centos 4.5 which is almost like redhat linux. And thus completely unsupported by Oracle - which begs the
question as to why anyone would bother to go to the
expense of setting up a RAID configuration for an
    unsupported database?
Anyway, you should be using RAID 1+0

  • RAID 0, Stripe, on XServe G5 Boot Volume

    Hello ~
I have a client that has a G5 Xserve with three identical 500 GB hard drives. Right now it's configured as three independent physical drives, one has the OS, the other two are empty. I'd like to stripe the three drives. Can I stripe the full 500 GB's of the three drives without reinstalling and configuring the OS? Also, will the OS run from a software RAID (stripe)?
    Thanks,

PB Ti 1GHz - The last of it's kind   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   et al

    Hi
Think carefully before doing this as you will not leave yourself a safety net if one of the drives in the RAID set fails. If you have 4x500GB drives consider stiping 2x500GB drives which will give you 1TB (RAID set 1), stripe the other two which will give you 1TB (RAID set 2) and mirror the first two with the second two. You wont get 2TB, you will only get 1TB but if any of the drives in the first RAID set fail, you will have redundancy in the second RAID set providing you with a safety net whilst you sort out the problems with the first RAID set. It can be tempting to JBOD all 4 drives to give you a massive 2TB but think of your disappointment as well as major data loss if one of your drives failed especially as you could have provided yourself with a safety net when first creating the RAID set.

  • External Fiber Channel Raid options for New Xserve besides Promise V-Trak

I was wondering if anyone out there knows if there is an alternate option for a External Raid that can be hooked up via 4gb Fiber Channel to my new Xserve. I am really looking for a more cost efficient one than the 12K Promise set up from Apple. My Technology vendor was telling me that you have to use the Promise Raid as it is the only one that a Xserve will control due to Apple's licensing of its drivers etc. for its Fiber channel. Something tells me that this is not true.
Anyone have any recomendations for a Fiber channel Raid solution in the 6K dollar range?
    thanks,
    Dan

Find another vendor. Anyone that tells you the Promise is the only RAID that will work clearly doesn't understand the market.
As for recommendations, you need to include some idea of capacity, either usable or raw. I can find you a lot of options for $6K if you want a 100GB of data. Not so many if you want 100TB.

  • Partition recommendations under RAID 5 in Intel Xserve

So I am preparing for a new OS X server installation on an Xserve Intel with (3) 2 TB volumes to be setup in RAID 5. Our budget would not allow the addition of an SSD drive. I would like to have two volumes under RAID 5: (1) our boot volume with OS and (1) our data and sharepoints. It would be nice to keep the OS separate from my sharepoints in case I need to do a reformat and reinstall.
Our current server setup has a RAID 1 mirrored boot volume on a G5 with an XServe RAID 5 array (all one volume unpartitioned). I also have a second FireWire hard drive connected that I use to maintain a bootable clone of our boot volume.
On our new Xserve Intel with RAID 5, is there a way to have (2) partitions under RAID 5: (1) a 150 GB boot volume and (1) an approx 3.85 TB volume that will contain all of our sharepoints. Since our server is still in transit, I do not have a machine on hand I can experiment with.
Would you create two partitions on each hard drive then join each to their respective RAID 5 array so you have two volumes—one for the OS and one for the sharepoints?
Or, with RAID 5, would it be better to keep the array as one single volume and keep the OS and sharepoints all on the same volume without any partitions? My preference would be to keep it as stable a setup as possible? Obviously, if we were to keep the OS and sharepoints as one volume, I could image the OS installation once it is stable (and without the sharepoints) and keep the image on hand just in case I needed to revert to it in case of a problem.
    What would you recommend?
    Thanks!

Yes, you can partition the drives as you want. The only practical way to do this is to use hardware RAID to create the RAID 5 volume with all three disks, then use Disk Utility to split this array into two partitions.
You're not going to gain much benefit from this, though. The main advantages of using different volumes for OS vs. data is for performance reasons, but you lose that here since a) you're using RAID 5 and b) all your data is on the same physical disks anyway.
About the only thing you gain is a guard against the data volume growing to the point it consumes all space on the drives and hoses your OS (because the OS is on a different volume) or vice versa, but that's a small benefit IMHO.
As for disk failure, you're no better off with partitioning than you would be with a single partition for both data and OS - either way a single disk failure will be handled by the hardware RAID card until the disk is replaced, and all your data (both OS and Data) is equally protected/at risk either way.
So my recommendation would be to use RAID 5 across all disks and be done with. No further partitioning is necessary. It is, however, your server, and you can run it however you prefer
As for the stability issue - don't bother with a disk image - it'll be outdated before you blink and will be a PITA to keep up to date.
The easier option is to create a directory for all your sharepoints and just manage your backups such that this directory is excluded from your OS backups, and included in your data backups.

  • Help Configuring Raid 1 & Raid 5 on the P67A-GD65 (B3) motherboard

I just purchased the P67A-GD65 (B3) motherboard for a custom system and have a few questions in regards to setting up RAID.
    I have the following HDs
    2x 1TB
    3x 3TB
I would like to setup RAID 1 with the two 1TB drivers and RADI 5 with the three 3TB drivers.  I connected the two 1TB drives to ports 7&8 so it would be using the Marvell SE9128 and the three 3TB drives to ports 1, 2,3 to use the Intel P67 (B3) PCH.  The documentation says that SATA ports 1-6 support RAID 0/1/5/10 and SATA port 7-8 support RAID 0/1.
The two 1TB in RAID 1 would be my boot drives (going to run VMWARE ESXi with multiple VMs) and the three 3TB RAID 5 drives are going to be my storage.
I was under the understanding that you could use both the Intel P67 (B3) PCH and the Marvell SE9128 at the same time but it looks like I can only configure one or the other.  If I have neither of the two setup I can hit CTRL + I and get to Intel or CTRL + M to get to Marvell but when I set one of them up I can’t boot into the other to setup my second RAID.
At the end of the day I bought this system to run ESXi 5.0 with multiple VMs with a shared storage area.  If I can’t utilize both controllers then what’s the point of having two on the motherboard?  I made sure in the BIOS settings I enabled RAID for the HDs.
If anyone has configured their systems like this please let me know how.
NOTE: As others have mentioned if you put in all your memory at one time then the system will go into a continuous reboot state.  You should only put in one and then the others.  Right now I have two 4GB sticks in and will add the others once I figure out is going on with the RAID.

Please make sure that the memory frequency is manually set to DDR3-1333, the Command Rate to 2T and the memory voltage to 1.575V.  Then retest with all modules.
I changed the frequency to DDR-1333 and Voltage but I don't know how to change the Command Rate or where it is located?  Any help?
    Also,
I'm still having problems getting the system to recognize the Marvell RAID config when I boot with the VMWare ESXi 5.0 CD and try to select where I want to install... When I go into the Marvell settings the system it shows that  I have two dirves in RAID 1 Config:
    PD 0: ST31000528AS -> PORT ID = 0; PD ID = 0; Type = SATA PD; Status = Configured; Size 953869MD; Feature Support = NCQ 3G 48Bits; Current Speed = 3G
    PD 8: ST31000528AS -> PORT ID = 1; PD ID = 8; Type = SATA PD; Status = Configured; Size 953869MD; Feature Support = NCQ 3G 48Bits; Current Speed = 3G
under the HBA 0: Marvell 0 settings it says the following:
    VENDOR ID: 1B4B
    DEVICE ID: 91A3
    REVISION ID: B1
    BIOS VERSION: 1.0.0.1027
    FIRMWARE VERSION: 2.1.2.1505
    PCIe Speed Rate: 5.0Gbps
Configure SATA as: IDE Mode -> In the BIOS I have the settings to RAID
Not sure if it matters but here's how I have the Intel Raid setup...
    RAID Volumes
    ID = 0; NAME = Storage; LEVEL = RAID5(Parity); STRIP = 64KB; SIZE = 5.4TB; STATUS = Normal (it's in green); BOOTABLE = Yes
    Physical Devices:
Port Device Mod Ser  Size  Type/Status(Vol ID)
0 Hitachi blah blah 2.7TB Member Disk (0)
1 Hitachi blah blah 2.7TB Member Disk (0)
2 Hitachi blah blah 2.7TB Member Disk (0)
Any Thoughts?  I'm trying to boot from the two 1TB drivers setup in the Marvell Raid 1 Config and the Raid5 through the Intel for all my storage needs.
    Thanks again for helping out.

You even have three more connectors free on your Perc controller, so you could add three more disks, without using any motherboard connectors.
I think you have two alternative approaches:
    1. Add a smallish disk as a boot disk, i.e. a 150 GB Velociraptor and install OS and programs there and let your raid5 exist as it is, or
    2. Add another 600 GB to your raid5 to make it a four disk array.
Of course you could also do both. Breaking the raid out to individual disks means that all data on the current raid will be lost, unless you have a backup available, but it will still mean a fresh install of OS & programs, so remember to deactivate Adobe before you do anything to your disk setup like in alternative 1 or breaking out the array.
