Configure Sendmail using POP/IMAP

Hello !
I need some consise and comprehensive help/tutorial or material/reference of any sort, as to how to configure Mail service using Sendmail and POP/IMAP service.
I would be highly obliged!

I take it that you want to get personal email while at work which may or may not be okay with your company policy - but that's for you to decide.
A way around it.
I use Oceanic Time Warner RoadRunner as an ISP and it has an option that allows me to access and send email when I am on the road called Web Mail that is accessed from my browser home page (RoadRunner). Mail won't allow you to access your normal mail except for viewing not sending messages when you're not in your local area, so Web Mail takes the place of using Mail. I access it through http.
Your email provider should have something similar with a web address as long as you can access it through your computer at work.

  • Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options

    Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options.
    Is this due to my Hosting Plan? Appreciate any answers.

    Your site is a CCM site which is on a WebBasics plan (This plan does not provide hosted emails on Business Catalyst).
    If you want to create email addresses on this site, you would need to setup your email server elsewhere and configure the MX records on your site to point to that external mail server.
    If you want to use Business Catalyst's hosted email services you would need to use a WebBasics+ or higher siteplan. To upgrade your CCM free site, Access your site's admin area  -> Site Management -> Upgrade Now -> choose the desired site plan and billing frequency -> Add personal and credit card details -> Submit.
    Please refer this article about setting up email accounts on your BC site: http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users

  • How to configure sendmail to use multiple LDAP servers ?

    Hi everybody!
    I have a sendmail running on Solaris 10 and a LDAP server(192.168.1.9) also running Solaris 10 OS. I have configured the sendmail the following way:
    bash-3.00# ldapclient list
    NS_LDAP_FILE_VERSION= 2.0
    NS_LDAP_BINDDN= cn=proxyagent,ou=profile,dc=email,dc=reso,dc=ru
    NS_LDAP_BINDPASSWD= {NS1}*********************
    NS_LDAP_SERVERS= 192.168.1.9
    NS_LDAP_SEARCH_BASEDN= dc=email,dc=domain,dc=ru
    NS_LDAP_AUTH= simple
    NS_LDAP_SEARCH_REF= FALSE
    NS_LDAP_SEARCH_SCOPE= sub
    NS_LDAP_SEARCH_TIME= 30
    NS_LDAP_CACHETTL= 43200
    NS_LDAP_PROFILE= default
    NS_LDAP_CREDENTIAL_LEVEL= proxy
    NS_LDAP_BIND_TIME= 10
    I also have another LDAP server (IP 192.168.1.10). It is configured as a replicant of the 192.168.1.9 LDAP server.
    The question is how can i configure sendmail to use both LDAP servers ?
    The man pages explain how to configure ldapclient to use ONE server and what if want to use two or more? All the settings and the profiles the same.
    Thanks in advance =))

    Hi!
    To add LDAP servers to the Solaris ldapclient, you might use the ldapclient command:
    ldapclient manual -v -a defaultServerList="servera.yourdomain.com serverb.yourdomain.com"
    But this is only failover, AFAIK the Solaris ldapclient does not perform loadbalancing by itself.
    But I am not sure about your sendmail programm. Normally, sendmail has its own configuration
    and can be configured to use LDAP e.g. for aliases etc.

  • Using POP not iMap for Gmail in Lion

    I set up Gmail using iMAP and I find it utterly unusable. It's trying to download all 100,000 messages onto my new MacBook Air. NO!!!!
    I want to use POP—as i have on all my other machines—to access my Gmail, but I can't seem to get the new version of Mail to cooperate.
    Can anyone please step me through how to set up POP access to Gmail? Just changing imap.google.com to pop.google.com does not work. If I try to create a new account, the moment I enter gmail.com it automatically set up as IMAP.
    So frustrating!

    THANK YOU BARNEY
    Words almost fail me regarding why this option is not only hidden from view, is not explained in the help text accessed from the '?' button, and needs secret knowledge to get to (or did I miss something basic somewhere?) but thank gawd I found your answer, albeit after an exasperating significant amount of wasted time...

  • Installation of Client Access role fails on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Execution of: "$error.Clear(); Install-ExchangeCertificate -services "IIS, POP, IMAP")

    Hello
    I am trying to install Exchange Server 2010 beta 1 onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 (build 7000) machine which has also been set up as a domain controller.
    However when attempting to install the Client Access role, setup fails with the error below.
    Does anyone know of a way to get around this please?
    I have already searched for this error and not found any similar threads.
    Also every time I press the code button on this forum it crashes the browser and I keep losing the message! (IE8 from within Server R2). Also the message box is very small, will not expand and keeps jumping to the top.
    Thanks

    Hello
    Thanks for all the replies.
    I have since wiped the system and installed everything again and it all worked this time so not sure what was wrong last time. I did try to uninstall all Exchange components and then uninstall IIS and Application server, reboot and re-install but I received the same error still when it came to installing the client access role.
    Walter: I just attempted the standard installation which should have used the default self-signed certificate. Everything was a fresh install done at the same time on a freshly formatted PC.
    For info last time when it failed to work:
    - Installed Windows Server 2008 R2
    - Installed Domain Controller role using dcpromo. I set the forest and domain as Windows Server 2008 R2
    - Added a forest trust between main domain and test Exchange domain (set up as ex2010.local)
    - Installed IIS and Application Server role
    - Installed Hyper-v role
    - Installed Desktop Experience feature
    - Installed Exchange and recieved the error
    When it worked I set up the forest and domain in Windows Server 2008 mode (i.e. not R2), installed Exchange first and then set up the forest trust and then Hyper-v. It did say it failed to configure dns which was probably because it started trying to do automatic updates half way through the dcpromo! DNS seems to work ok though.
    I did notice this time that Hyper-v gave a warning about the virtual network adapter not being set up correctly and the local network did not work correctly although I could access the internet. Not sure if this could have been related to the cause of the problem previously. For now I have disabled the virtual network until I get time to try and get it working and so the mail will work in the meantime.
    I also noticed that Hyper-v added an extra 443 ssl binding to the default website so as it had 2 bindings on port 443 it refused to start. After deleting one it worked.
    I decided to install Exchange onto a domain controller as it is only a test and I wouldn't do it in a live environment. I am also short of test machines! It didn't give me any warnings about this actually, I think previous versions warn you that it is not recommended.
    Andreas and Chinthaka: I did not know about the requirement to run the domain at 2003 mode. The main domain is running in 2008 mode with Exchange 2007 so I assume this is just a temporary beta related requirement. It does seem to be working (second attempt) so far in a 2008 mode domain although I haven't had a chance to fully test it yet.
    Thanks
    Robin
    P.S. Sorry it's taken me a while to reply!

    Hello,
    There may be configuration problem.
    I suggest you run the cmdlet “ get-receiveconnector | fl to check authentication and permission groups on client frontend receive connector.
    On server side, the configuration as following.
     ==========================================
    Transport Layer Security (TLS) --> enabled
    Basic Authentication --> enabled with "Offer Basic auth only after TLS" enabled
    Integrated Windows authentication --> enabled
    On client side, the correct configuration as following.
     ===================================================
    Incoming POP3 server --> port 995, SSL required
    Outgoing SMTP server --> port 587, TLS encryption enabled
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP) requires authentication enabled, “Use same settings as my incoming mail server” enabled

  • Duplicated Notes using Gmail (IMAP)

    Last friday was a huge day for my little Macbook. It received 10.5 and I switched my GMAIL configs from POP to IMAP. Thanks to another post, I have solved a major anoyance in Mail (Drafts not erasing), but something is still weird.
    I starting using Notes, but it gets duplicated. I have 4 copies of the same Note in Mail and 22 on my online GMAIL account.
    Anyone else got the same problem? Is it a "feature", a config somewhere or a bug?
    Thanks

    Yes. I have this problem too. When I create a note it gets duplicated. First it appears as a blank "New Note" in the "All Mail" folder. After adding text to the note it appears once in my Gmail-Inbox and again (this time with the full text included) in the All Mail folder.
    In Mail.app, I have set my "Composing" preferences to create Notes and To Do's in Gmail (rather than On My Mac). This is a great way to transfer notes and to do's to my iPhone. I've been messing around with different configuration options with Gmail IMAP, iPhone, and Mail.app since Google rolled out IMAP a couple of weeks ago.
    If you haven't seen this article yet check it out. This de-mystified the process a lot for me. Please post if figure out why Notes are being duplicated.

  • When creating Certificate request what settings for POP IMAP

    when Creating a request for Certificate POP and IMAP are in the list along with autodiscover etc
    default value is Server Host name ie. EXCH2013
    what should these be set to ?
    I'm configuring remote.mydomain.com - should I set these to remote.mydomain.com ?
    JK

    it depends... you can set up same name as your SMTP service or if you want different name for pop/IMAP like webmail or smthing else then you can go for that.
    I generally use the same as enabling POP/IMAP is very less required on ex so i just enable the service keeping the URL same so that you save or SSL name also
    MARK AS USEFUL/ANSWER IF IT DID

  • Email Sender's display name not displaying/resolving on internal emails with POP/IMAP clients

    Here's the scenario. I have two 2013 test accounts setup in Outlook as POP/SMTP accounts. I have their name setup as initials in the outlook account (the "Your Name" field).  If I send an email (Through SMTP) to a 2013 Exchange(Outlook
    Anywhere) client, their names resolve to their actual Display Name in the GAL which is correct.  Now if I send an email to another 2013 POP/IMAP user, their name shows what is setup in Outlook which is their initials which is not correct.
    Now we are currently in the process of a 2007 to 2013 migration.  I do not see this behavior on the Exchange 2007 side with POP/IMAP clients.  If I run the same test setup with a 2007 mailbox as the recipient, the sender's name resolves to
    their GAL display name and NOT the name configured in the Outlook Account settings.  It doesn't matter whether the sender is a 2007 or 2013 account.  As long as the recipient is on 2007 it works fine.
    This is all tested using authenticated SMTP.  The only difference I can tell is that the 2007 servers resolve the name before delivering it to the inbox where the 2013 servers don't.
    There aren't any GAL or Address Book related issues on the 2013 side.  Full exchange clients or OWA work correctly.

    Hi,
    It seems to be related to the permission settings on the receive connector. For example, using a Receive Connector for Anonymous Relay. We can refer to this article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996395(v=exchg.141).aspx
    And we can use the tool Dsacls to check the permissions:

  • Cannot send email in mail app. using POP account with Wi-Fi

    I recently moved to an apartment that only has wireless internet access. Since moving I cannot send email using my POP account, although I can receive email. I was also not able to receive email using my .mac account, but I learned through this forum to change server port to 587 in .mac account and now I can send via .mac account in mail app. But I still cannot sent email with mail app. using my POP account. I changed no settings when I moved, and have never had this problem with cable. Any suggestions?

    It all depends on the policy of whoever is the ISP at your new location and the method used by the outgoing (SMTP) server to determine whether you’re a legitimate user.
    In an attempt to fight spam, many ISPs restrict the ability to send using an outgoing (SMTP) server not owned by them, usually by blocking port 25 for all traffic outside their own network, which means you cannot send with an SMTP server not owned by them if configured to use that port number. And it may happen the other way around as well, i.e. the outgoing server itself may look at the IP address you’re connecting from and refuse the connection if you’re outside its own network.
    Something that often works is changing the outgoing server port to 587 (or whatever alternate port number the outgoing server listens to) instead of 25 and using some form of authentication in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but two conditions must be satisfied for this change to work: (1) the ISP must not block that port as well AND (2) the outgoing server in question must listen to that port and accept a form of authentication not based on the IP address you’re connecting from.
    Independent mail service providers not tied to a particular ISP, such as .Mac and Gmail, do allow authenticated SMTP access on port 587, which is the reason changing the outgoing server port number solves the problem for them if the ISP doesn’t block that port as well.
    The following article, for example, describes several ways to address this issue in the case of .Mac, but can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac), and applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states):

  • HT4864 Is there any way to use POP mail with iCloud?

    Hi newbie here, so be kind!  Just trying to set up iCloud on my new iPad, my iPhone 3G and my oldish Windows PC running Vista.  I have managed to get the iPad and iPhone running relatively well, but the real reason I wanted to synch all my devices was because I am buried beneath all the emails that I receive each day and cleaning them off three devices was a real hassle (1st world prob I know).  My PC is running Windows mail because I couldn't get Yahoo mail to run on POP or IMAP settings. So I have been happily downloading Yahoo mail (via) POP into Windows mail for a few years now.  However I have hit an Apple Support doc saying that I cannot use POP settings in iCloud (if you know what I mean), I have to use IMAP.  Can anyone help me with what settings I need to put in Windows Mail to make it sync with the mail client on my phone and iPad?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Gmail and all POP systems are not iCloud mail. iCloud mail ends with @mac, @me or @icloud.com, Gmail and POP systems are not handled by iCloud mail systems.

  • Is there any way to harden Dovecot against POP/IMAP denial of service attacks?

    It doesn’t happen very often, but every so often a script kiddie on the Internet hits Dovecot's POP ports on our mail server hard enough to bring mail service to a crawl such that legit users can’t log in to retrieve their mail.  I would say that with our 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini Server, when we receive sustained POP login attacks that exceed ten logins per second, then eventually Dovecot gets swamped with so many requests that legit users are excluded.  [Our server runs runs OS X Server 10.6.8-10K549, by the way, and Dovecot 1.1.2apple0.5 is installed as determined by running “dovecotd --version”.  We keep the mail sever up to date with all available Apple software updates on a weekly basis, so we have the latest and greatest security updates.]
    Here’s the problem: I’ve been studying the Dovecot 1.x Wiki at http://wiki1.dovecot.org/ and finding a number of parameters that *sort* of address this denial-of-service vulnerability, but none that appear to harden Dovecot in a similar fashion as ssh or sftp are hardened.  By this, I mean that when ssh or sftp detect multiple login attempts originating from the same address above some threshold, then future login attempts are ignored for a solid fifteen minutes no matter what the login name was in the attempts.  I’d like something similar for Dovecot.
    I am aware of the “mail_max_userip_connections” setting which can be set independently for POP and IMAP service (see http://wiki1.dovecot.org/MainConfig?highlight=%28mail_max_userip_connections%29).  This almost does what I want in that it indeed restricts the number of logins for a particular user coming from a single IP address.  The problem is that the script kiddies typically scatter their attacks over hundreds of different login names and they may only attempt three or four logins per user name.  What I really want is a parameter which starts to ignore logins no matter what the user name if too many come from a single IP address at the same time.  Against this, I also need to balance my mail server restrictions to allow perhaps five or ten of my users with laptops to be behind a remote firewall, so all of their legit logins may hit my server perhaps three to ten at a time which could potentially look like an attack if my tuning parameter is set too low.  What I’d really like to find is a tuning parameter that excludes concerted attacks without excluding my legitimate users.  I also don’t want to invest in extremely expensive (>$10,000) “smart” firewalls that adaptively look for this type of attack, such as are offered by Netgear and other networking equipment manufacturers.
    By examining /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf on my mail server, it seems that Apple’s defaults are to set IMAP mail_max_userip_connections to 20, and for POP to leave the mail_max_userip_connections parameter commented out.  Would there be any downside to enabling POP's mail_max_userip_connections to 20 as well?  Offhand I can’t see how this would affect my users.  Unfortunately, I also think that if I set the POP mail_max_userip_connections to 20 this won’t have any effect on the attackers since they typically won’t try 20 different passwords for the same login name in a given attack.  I’ll post a segment of a log showing an actual attack that occurred today from the San Bernadino School District that I’ve since blocked in my network’s firewall, but it will illustrate the type of hard-core denial-of-service attack that I’m referring to.  The login attempts were coming in fast, around forty-per-second, and my mail service went down in a matter of minutes as a result.  [Yes: I will report this user…  I haven’t gotten around to it yet with other issues.]
    Any thoughts?

    Here’s a ten second snippet from my mail server's log, showing how intense the login frequency was from the attacker, and also how (s)he was "scattering" the login names used which I suspect would be quite hard to filter out using POP's mail_max_userip_connections parameter.  The attack lasted from 1:43:39 through a server restart at 1:50:18, and even about a minute later.  The attack stopped at 1:51:36 before I was able to add a firewalling rule to my router or to exclude logins from the 163.150/16 subnet from my router [FYI — that's the San Bernadino Country School District, according to http://whois.arin.net/rest/net/NET-163-150-0-0-1/pft ].
    Any thoughts on how to block this type of POP attack in Dovecot?
    [FYI — I changed my actual server name to 'myserver' and the actual admin name to 'Administrator'.]
