Configure Windows Server Essentials Fails with Please Click Retry. If the Issue still exsists........

I had a Windows 2003 SBS that i am migrating to a new Windows 2012 R2 Essentials machine.  I had to upgrade the Domain and Forrest from 2000 to 2003 to be able to add my new 2012 server to the existing domain.  Once it was replicated i demoted
the Server 2003 machine and removed the DNS role as well.  I then upgraded the Forrest and Domain to 2008 R2 and then to 2012 R2.
Now the fun begins.  I tried to then run the Essentials configuration wizard and it fails.  I have spent two days reading technotes so here is what i have done.  For some reasone the Managed Service Accounts container was not there.  (i
may deleted it during the AD clean up..there were a ton of unneeded containers and OUs).  So i followed:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/f9588fd5-0236-419d-b217-8c4de67732ae/deleted-managed-service-accounts-container?forum=winserverDS
Which i used ADSIEdit to remove some containers and set the AD Version to clear and rerean ADPrep /domainprep.  At this point the Managed Service Accounts container reapeared.  I removed the role of Windows Essentials Experience...rebooted and
installed the role again.  But the ServerAdmain and MediaAdmin$ accounts did not create.   So i created them using the following powershell:
import-module activedirectory
add-kdsrootkey -effectivetime ((get-date).addhours(-10))
New-AdServiceAccount -Name ServerAdmin -Path "CN=Managed Server Accounts,DC=[Domain],DC=local" -enabled $true -RestricttoSingleComputer
and i did the same for MediaServer.  And they show up in the container where they should be.  I then went to GPO Managment and change the Log on as Service and added the two accounts to the Domain Controller GPO.  (*note...interesting thing
here...before i create the domain managed service accounts i tried [domain]\ServerAdmin$ and if failed but when i tried ServerAdmin$ it added but it was not the domain account....so that was odd) .  I then did a gpupdate /force as well as a reboot for
good measusre.  When the Server came back up, i went the Local Policies and verified that the ServerAdmin$ and MediaAdmin$ were given Log in as Service on the Server.  Finally i ran the COnfigure Essentials Wizard and the DAMN thing failed again.....can
anyone please help me with this.  It is in a production environment due to the 2003 Server dying...so i can't just wipe it and start from scratch.
Thanks!!

I've tried all the suggestions here https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/3273ae3f-4952-4f96-be48-07bee6986e57/error-server-essentials-post-deployment-fails-at-0?forum=winserveressentials

short of a reformat, but it still fails for me at 87%. I have no ServerFolders folder to delete or rename, although I did at one point have an additional disk attached that had an old installation. possibly with ServerFolders, but I don't recall trying to
install the Essentials role with that drive attached.
I can provide the CBS log if preferred. I have been unable to find anything of use myself there.

  • [Forum FAQ] How to install and configure Windows Server Essentials Experience role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard via PowerShell locally and remotely

    As we all know,
the Windows Server Essentials Experience role is available in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. We can add the Windows Server
Essentials Experience role in Server Manager or via Windows PowerShell.
In this article, we introduce the steps to install and configure Windows
Server Essentials Experience role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard via PowerShell locally and remotely. For better analyze, we divide this article into two parts.
Before installing the Windows Server Essentials Experience Role, please use
    Get-WindowsFeature
PowerShell cmdlet to ensure the Windows Server Essentials Experience (ServerEssentialsRole) is available. (Figure 1)
    Figure 1.
Part 1: Install Windows Server Essentials Experience role locally
Add Windows Server Essentials Experience role
Run Windows PowerShell as administrator, then type
Add-WindowsFeature ServerEssentialsRole cmdlet to install Windows Server Essentials Experience role. (Figure 2)
    Figure 2.
Note: It is necessary to configure Windows Server Essentials Experience (Post-deployment Configuration). Otherwise, you will encounter following issue when opening Dashboard.
    (Figure 3)
    Figure 3.
      2. Configure Windows Server Essentials Experience role
    (1)  In an existing domain environment
Firstly, please join the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard computer to the existing domain through the path:
    Control Panel\System\Change Settings\”Change…”\Member of. (Figure 4)
    Figure 4.
After that, please install Windows Server Essentials Experience role as original description. After installation completed, please use the following command to configure Windows
    Server Essentials:
    Start-WssConfigurationService –Credential <Your Credential>
    Note: The type of
Your Credential should be as: Domain-Name\Domain-User-Account.
You must be a member of the Enterprise Admin group and Domain Admin group in Active Directory when using the command above to configure Windows Server Essentials. (Figure 5)
    Figure 5.
Next, you can type the password for the domain account. (Figure 6)
    Figure 6.
After setting the credential, please type “Y” to continue to configure Windows Server Essentials. (Figure 7)
    Figure 7.
By the way, you can use
    Get-WssConfigurationStatus
    PowerShell cmdlet to
get the status of the configuration of Windows Server Essentials. Specify the
ShowProgress parameter to view a progress indicator. (Figure 8)
    Figure 8.
    (2) In a non-domain environment
Open PowerShell (Run as Administrator) on the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and type following PowerShell cmdlets: (Figure 9)
Start-WssConfigurationService -CompanyName "xxx" -DNSName "xxx" -NetBiosName "xxx" -ComputerName "xxx” –NewAdminCredential $cred
    Figure 9.
After you type the commands above and click Enter, you can create a new administrator credential. (Figure 10)
After creating the new administrator credential, please type “Y” to continue to configure Windows Server Essentials. (Figure 11)
After a reboot, all the configurations will be completed and you can open the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard without any errors. (Figure 12)
    Figure 12.

Part 2: Install and configure Windows Server Essentials Experience role remotely
    In an existing domain environment
In an existing domain environment, please use following command to provide credential and then add Server Essentials Role: (Figure 13)
    Add-WindowsFeature -Name ServerEssentialsRole
    -ComputerName xxx -Credential DomainName\DomainAccount
    Figure 13.
After you enter the credential, it will start install Windows Server Essentials role on your computer. (Figure 14)
    Figure 14.
After the installation completes, it will return the result as below:
    Figure 15.
    Next, please use the
    Enter-PSSession
cmdlet and provide the correct credential to start an interactive session with a remote computer. You can use the commands below:
    Enter-PSSession –ComputerName
    xxx –Credential DomainName\DomainAccount (Figure 16)
    Figure 16.
Then, please configure Server Essentials Role via
Add-WssConfigurationService cmdlet and it also needs to provide correct credential. (Figure 17)
    Figure 17.
After your credential is accepted, it will update and prepare your server. (Figure 18)
    Figure 18.
After that, please type “Y” to continue to configure Windows Server Essentials. (Figure 19)
    Figure 19.
    2. In a non-domain environment
In my test environment, I set up two computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and use Server1 as a target computer. The IP addresses for the two computers are as
    below:
    Sevrer1: 192.168.1.54
    Server2: 192.168.1.53
    Run
    Enable-PSRemoting –Force on Server1. (Figure 20)
    Figure 20.
Since there is no existing domain, it is necessary to add the target computer (Server1) to a TrustedHosts list (maintained by WinRM) on Server 2. We can use following command
    to
    add the TrustedHosts entry:
    Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts IP-Address
    (Figure 21)
    Figure 21.
    Next, we can use
    Enter-PSSession
cmdlet and provide the correct credential to start an interactive session with the remote computer. (Figure 22)
    Figure 22.
After that, you can install Windows Server Essentials Experience Role remotely via Add-WindowsFeature ServerEssentialsRole cmdlet. (Figure 23)
    Figure 23.
From figure 24, we can see that the installation is completed.
    Figure 24.
    Then you can use
Start-WssConfigurationService cmdlet to configure Essentials Role and follow the steps in the first part (configure Windows Server Essentials Experience in a non-domain environment) as the steps would be the same.
The figure below shows the status of Windows Server Essentials.
    Figure
    25.
Finally, we have successfully configured Windows Server Essentials on Server1. (Figure 26)
    Figure 26.

  • Windows Server Essentials error occurred while configuring on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

am attempting to install the Windows Server Essentials on a new domain controller in a new domain and forest.   I go to add roles and features and select essentials.  The config wizard says it is Updating and Preparing the Server and
That is all the information that you need to provide. Your server is being prepared for use and may restart more than once. This may take up to 30 minutes.
It goes to 3% and the encounters an error saying An error occurred while configuring Windows Server Essentials. Please try again.  I don't seem to find anything in the log to indicate why it fails.

    Hi boe_d,
Based on your description, did you mean that this error was occurred in process of installing the Windows Server
Essentials Experience Role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard? If I misunderstand, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
If it is, have you re-tried the role installation? Please check if still go to 3% and then get the same error
    message.
    In addition, please add
ServerAdmin$ account to the Logon as a service Group Policy, and then monitor the result. For more details, please refer to the following article.
You may be unable to run post-deployment configuration wizard after you install the Windows Server Essentials

  • Windows Server Essentials 2012 error code: 2147942403 The system cannot find the path specified

Running Windows Server 2012 Essentials with an external usb 3 drive as a backup device.  Using a Vantec hx enclosure with a WD Red drive. Last night the Dashboard saw the drive with about half the 4TB available for backup. A.M., I get "error code:
2147942403 The system cannot find the path specified".
Going to the server desktop, I see a message indicating that the usb device malfunctioned.  unplugging it, and plugging it back in, I now have it available via the dashboard.
This has happened a couple times with two different drives in Vantec hx enclosures.
A couple possibilities come to mind:
the enclosures may both be bad...
there is some problem with the system software and external usb drive.
    Thoughts?
    Suggestions for external enclosures?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you cannot backup the Windows Server Essentials 2012 and got "error code: 2147942403 The system cannot find the path specified". You found the usb device malfunctioned.
Can you backup the server when you unplugged the usb device, and plugged it back in? If you can backup the server when you replug the usb device, you need to engage the vendor to resolve the hard drive issues.
    Best Regards,
    Mandy

  • Integrate On-Premises Exchange Server With Windows Server Essentials

I have Exchange Server 2013 installed on Win Server 2012 R2 joined to Windows Server Essentials domain.  Attempting to integrate the Exchange Server into the Essentials domain from the Essentials Dashboard using the wizard fails with the error, "Cannot
locate an Exchange Server on the network. Make sure that your Exchange Server is setup and that it is connected to the network".  I can communicate with the server in multiple ways from the Essentials Server and other computers on the domain.  Mail
flow in and out of the Exchange Server works without issue.  I can use the various management tools to administer the Exchange Server.  The only task I cannot complete is integrating it into the Essentials environment which I need to do to move on
to creating user mailboxes for user accounts setup in AD.
All research to date has come up empty handed.
    Help!

    Hi RSUL,
    Any update?
On current situation, would you please let me confirm something more? It may help me to understand this issue
    clearly.
Would you please let me know how join the Windows Server 2012 R2 (which had been installed Exchange Server 2013) to Windows Server Essentials domain? Did use Connector software
    (type http://servername/connect)?
On server essentials, please open Dashboard and navigate to DEVICES. Then check the Status of this server which had been installed Exchange Server 2013.
Currently, the Services Integration features, including on-premises Exchange integration, are only supported in a single domain controller environment. Meanwhile, the integration
wizard must be run on a domain controller.
In addition, please refer to the following article and check if can help you.
    On
Premises Exchange Integration Windows Server 2012 Essentials
    Integrate an On-Premises Exchange Server
    with Windows Server Essentials
By the way, please check Event Viewer and some relevant logs if you can find some more clues.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • How to configure Windows server 2003 with WebDav

Can anyone advise on the best way to configure Windows server 2003 with WebDav so I can get the likes of some of those Apps such as PDF Expert and GoodReader to see the folders.
I have installed the necessary services and on a Windows PC and can browse to the URL OK which lists the files (setup using a Virtual Directory).
When I tried using this with GoodReader/PDF Expert, it could not find the server in question.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hello,
Please make sure you have checked "anonymous users" on receive connector.
Do you mean you can't send an email to external email address? If so, please post the detailed NDR information.
Please use get-receiveconnector | fl cmdlet to check your receive conenctor configuration.

  • Windows Server Essentials Email Service Won't Start SharedServiceHost.exe Unhandled exception from operation

    Gday Everyone,
Two weeks ago we installed a new Server 2012 R2 with the Essentials Experience role. It was fully patched at time of deployment. We enabled O365 integration and password sync was working fine last week. This morning I went to the Dash Board to add a new
user and after clicking the O365 tab all fields show "Not available".
    The system event log shows
"The Windows Server Essentials Email Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 3 time(s)."
The application event log shows the following.

The only thing we did a few days ago was enable the Azure Backup integration. I am not sure if this broke the O365 integration as I didn't go back to the O365 tab in the dashboard after installing the Azure backup.
I have spent a considerable amount of time on google, however, majority of the posts talk about Update 1 which disables the password sync service. I have checked and all services are started with exception of Windows Server Essentials Email Service (WseEmailSvc).
The Azure Backup module is working fine and the registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\Productivity seems to hold the correct configuration information throughout the various keys.
I am at a loss as to how to proceed with this issue? I have checked but there are no pending updates and I have attempted a server reboot numerous times.
Would appreciate external input if you have seen this issue before or know where we can look to further establish what is going on.
    Cheers,
    Chiper

I have a similar if not identical situation - I'm currently migrating from WS2012 Essentials to WS2012 R2 Standard w/Essentials role installed. The 'wseemailsvc' service continues to fail over and over, and I am unable to manage O365 accounts from within
the Essentials dashboard on the R2 server.

  • Migrating from SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2012R2 Standard with 365

Im looking to move SBS 2011 to Server 2012R2 standard and with a 365 migration as well.
    Im thinking
    BPA for AD (health check)
Add the Server2012R2 as a DC
    Ensure replication
    Move DHCP
    Change DNS
Now this is where I get lost, now Im lost to use either dirsync or add essentials service, I have gone for standard and 30 cals with the option  as I have 28 users and the essentials service would make everything quite nice for remote access and backups
etc....  however I don't know whether to just use dirsync with password replication instead ?
Currently Im aiming towards getting the dc up and running then enabling essentials on the dc but I dont know how it will effect SBS and having essentials on the same network and sync'ing people to the cloud ? So Should I use DirSync on a different server
instead to sync up to azure ?
Finally with 365 I have only ever done a migration involving an export of pst's from an exchange box and then on a new domain with new pc's and reimport the pst's on the user accounts in outlook.
However I have read when migrating to 365 was using exchange 2010 there was a application
to move everything across however you needed an ssl cert iirc ? so I dont know how it works now since the nice new dashboard upgrade (assuming the tool has been updated like dirsync)
along with the above how does AD now know where exahcnge if you use the migration app with an ssl cert and is it a case of still running the 365 config tool to configure each user to look at their mail in the
cloud ? Also is it a good idea to enable essentials from the start of the 2012r2 dc for replication top 365 or to use dirsync ?
then finally when replications is all good start transferring the FSMO roles over to the new DC and demote and remove the SBS server
I have seen (below) but i dont think it covers this scenario and I cant be the only person in this situation =\ ?

    Hi,
Would you please let us know current situation of this issue? If any update, please feel free to let us know.
    à
Currently Im aiming towards getting the dc up and running then enabling essentials on the dc but I dont know how it will effect SBS and having essentials on the same network
and sync'ing people to the cloud?
I’m a little confused with the description. Did you mean that set up DC (Windows Server 2012 Standard) and
then install the Windows Server Essentials Experience role? If so, when you migrate, please refer to the article:
Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience
Regarding to migrate Exchange to Office 365, please refer to following articles.
    Migrate
All Mailboxes to the Cloud with a Cutover Exchange Migration
    Step-By-Step:
Migrating from Exchange 2007 to Office 365

Meanwhile, there is an additional article that you can refer to:
Manage Office 365 in Windows Server Essentials. It may help us to understand Office 365 in Server Essentials clearly.
If anything I misunderstand, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows Server Essentials Connector issue

I cannot get the computer connector program to complete successfully. Had to add my 6 Pcs manually through the Properties screen on the PCs.  As a result, Computers are not listed on the Anywhere Access screen and no-one can remote into their PC.
I have both, a self-signed certificate for the servername.domainname.local and a purchased certificate for the public domain on the server.
here is the computerconnector log and the clientdeployment log:

testing the certificates and not finding any errors, I stumbled across the Basic Settings button that highlighted an authorization problem. I manually set the authorization to the admin account and by problems disappeared. I am now able to successfully
join client PCs to the domain thru the //Server/connect method.

  • Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."

    Hi,
Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."
    DC:windows Server 2008 R2
    Domain functional level:Windows Server 2003
When Winxp join domain, have no this error message.
    I checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2018583?wa=wsignin1.0 does't work.
There have 3 suggestion in this article:
1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.
    BR
    Guo YingHui

    Hi Guo Ying,
I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.

    Hi,
Brian is right, for mange the Server 2008r2 sp1 we recommend use the Windows 7 or 7.1 platform.

  • I can not update a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Software Update Group in SCCM2012

    Hi all,
I got some problems with update deployments these days.
I try to configure SCCM2012 to update 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 (with Hyper-V / This server is in a cluster)
Actually i've 4 other Hyper-V servers and i would like to add one more in the cluster called Hyper-V5. To do that i need that all Hyper-V servers use the same Windows Updates.
I created a collection for my Hyper-V servers and then a Software Update Group with all needed updates (checked the list of another HV-Server).
I did a deployment on this collection using this new Software Update Group.
I checked the Sofwtare Center's logs on the Hyper-V5 server and i saw that synchronization has a successfull state.
But there is no updates installed or displayed in Sofwtare Center.
Here is some screenshots : Oh no i can't post image because ... "Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account." waiting to be verified since months.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
Have you try to run Software Updates Scan Cycle and Software Updates Deployment Evaluation Cycle Actions on the client? Please check ScanAgent.log and PolicyAgent.log to see whether the client received the updates deployment policy.
    Best Regards,
    Joyce Li
