Configuring a home server to send outgoing email (Port 25 outbound blocked)

Hello,
I am trying to set up a home email server on my Verizon DSL connection, but I believe port 25 outbound is blocked.  How do I fix this problem?  Do I need to configure my home email server to connect to outgoing.verizon.net on port 587?  If so, will I need to use Verizon login credentials to establish that connection?
Just to clarify - I am trying to set up a home email SERVER, not an email client.  I am using Postfix as my MTA and need it to be able to connect to another MTA (perhaps outgoing.verizon.net?) so that it can transfer emails from my server to the outside world.
If this is not the way to correct the problem I'm having, can you please let me know how?  Thanks.
-allmessedup

25 is blocked across most servers these days.  Verizon only allows it within there network to their mail SMTP server.
In general mail servers no longer use smtp but ESMTP
Recommended for ESMTP is using 465 which also requires setting ssl security on.  And incoming as 995 and ssl.  Or using 587 and 110.

  • Exchange server cannot send outgoing email

We are experiencing some issue with the outgoing email , we found out that some email cannot reach our client email.
if the customer is using exchange server, it seems there is no issue.
However, if customers use other server.. like lotus or notes,,etc, there are issues.

Can you send to a Gmail or Hotmail account?
Otherwise, SMTP traffic to outside clients should not depend on any sort of password replication.
Even if the partner was using something like mutual TLS (unlikely), that has to do with certificates, not passwords.
One thing you could do is enable protocol logging on the Send Connector to see what happens when your Exchange server attempts to talk to the client's messaging system.
Bharat Suneja (MVP) wrote an excellent article on how to enable this and where to find the resulting logs:
    http://exchangepedia.com/2007/05/exchange-server-2007-logging-smtp-protocol-activity.html
Directions for 2010 and 2013 are included.
Now, reading the log can be a challenge but if you need to get to the bottom of this, you may have to make this effort.
EDIT: Of course, if you need help with that, feel free to follow up.

  • Mac Mail No Longer Sends Outgoing Email

Has Verizon changed its email settings?  My Mac Mail program suddenly quit sending out my university email from home and says the outgoing verizon server rejected the password.  However, nothing has been changed in my email program and it won't accept any password to send the outgoing email.
The online instructions provided by Verizon for Entourage indicate changing the outgoing port setting to 587.   But that does not work.
Why can't the Mac Mail program send out email through Verizon any more?
    Solved!

Thanks for helping.  While the university has web mail for off campus access, our IT said that off campus users (i.e., when at home) using a dedicated email client (e.g., Mac Mail) should send outgoing email through their internet service provider.  I agree, it doesn't seem right to me, but that's what they have us do.
Settings that worked previously: The incoming server is a pop account, mail.cahnrs.wsu.edu with a user name and password.  The outgoing server is outgoing.verizon.net using port 587 with user name and password.
The university email is generally [email protected]  But it could also be [email protected]
Until about two days ago, these settings were working fine, so it seems like something changed somewhere.
Thanks very much for any help you can offer.
So when you're off-campus, are you still in Washington? If so, you're in an area that's been sold to Frontier, and it's entirely possible that your email access has been converted. You can contact Tech Support if you need help setting things up and/or verifying the status of your account. I was able to find this via Google, hopefully it will help you:
    http://www.frontierhelp.com/faq.cfm?qstid=1
Basically it says your SMTP server should be smtp.frontier.com, but there's also a link-off that appears to provide walk-throughs for configuring your client.
    Hope this helps!

  • Mail suddenly stopped sending outgoing emails!

I have 4 email accounts in Mail that just stopped sending outgoing emails yesterday without changing anything!
I have another Mac (OS X 10.6) connected to the same router, I set up one of the email addresses on that with the same details and it works perfectly.
I've noticed there are a couple of other threads on here with the same thing and they don't appear to have answers, hopefully someone knows something!
    Help, very much appreciated!
    Mark

You likely have corrupted settings for your  "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)".  Open Mail>go to Mail's Preferences>Accounts>there set up your Outgoing Mail Server which will INCLUDE resetting up your Password, as its asking you to.  Click on "SMTP Outgoing Mail Server" near the bottom of the Accounts window while your mail account is highlighted in the left hand column.  When you click on SMTP... you will see a drop down box icon offered at the right side of the line.  Click it and then select at the bottom of the the list "Edit SMTP Mail Server".  Fill in the required settings for your ISP mail account using their recommended settings.

  • How to use Apple Mail to send outgoing emails only?

    Hello,
I haven't been able to find exactly what I'm looking for elsewhere on the interwebs.
I want to be able to set up the Apple Mail app on my Mac to send outgoing emails only from my Gmail account. I use the Gmail website and my iPhone for sending/receiving emails and I don't want or have a need for all of my Gmail emails to be downloaded into the Apple Mail app or for new emails to appear in the Mail app as they come in.
I just want to be able to send outgoing emails from the app so that I can send photos directly from iPhoto using the Email button. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Great news, thanks!

  • Can't send outgoing email

    Just got the iPhone.
It is not sending outgoing mail. I use this POP account from GoDaddy all the time. The error states "A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The recipient ..... was rejected by the server."
I have deleted and re-created the account once which had no effect.
    Thank you.

I did set up the outgoing server, exactly as in my Apple Mail account, that is why I am posting.
If a different value is required in the same field for two different devices, then I don't know how anyone is supposed to intuitively know that.
Thank you for the replies. I will examine and report back.

  • Help! My home mac is sending spam emails!

    Hello,
I am a long time mac user, and have never encountered this problem before. In fact I've only heard about this on windows:
My home mac is sending out spam via my primary email address.
I discovered on Friday morning that sometime on Thursday afternoon a bunch of spam emails were sent out to people present in my addressbook while I was on my home Mac (there are other unfamiliar address too, but many from my addressbook). I checked my home directory for viruses using Norton Antivirus and found a virus: Trojan.ByteVerify and some related files. I deleted them, and rechecked the directory, and found nothing more, so I thought that was the end of it.
However I checked this afternoon and found two more batches of spam emails had been sent, yesterday early afternoon and again today late afternoon. Norton continues to find nothing in my home directory, nor does Little Snitch report any unsolicited activity.
I assume my Mac is to blame, as the emails have only gone out when I am active on the computer and connected to the internet.
I have the firewall on, and Norton checks all downloads, but beyond that I'm not sure what else I can do. I am right now working from an 'emergency' drive which I hope has not been affected.
I am prepared to erase my primary startup drive and rebuild it, IF that will solve the problem, but I am looking for some guidance. None of my tools seems to be reporting anything wrong, and yet something definitely is! I thought Mac OS X was immune to this sort of thing, but it appears not.
Any help would be appreciated as to what I can look for or do (aside from giving up and rebuilding the startup drive).
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi folks,
An update 10 days after the problem first appeared...
    It seems clear that:
    - someone is able to mimic my old email address and send spam to people, making it look like it is coming from my address. At least some of these spam emails are showing up in my "Sent" messages folder in the compromised email account.
    - Somehow, the spammer has obtained my address book, which is being used (in part) as a source of addresses for spam recipients. I know this because among some unknown spam destinations are scattered addresses I have in my address book from both work and personal life. I have no idea how this could have happened. I have not emailed my address book anywhere. I have in the last month or so used dropbox to start synchronizing address book between home and work macs (so the master resides on dropbox), Those are the only places my address book resides. I see no sign that my dropbox account is compromised, but I might abandon cloud computing for now after this!
    - Spam (pretending to be me as a source) is only being sent out when I am actually using my home macintosh computer. I am certain of this now, after 10 days of viewing the pattern. The first spam was Thursday June 24, when I was on the Mac, and there have since been about 6 or so spam 'waves'. None on the 25th, but on the 26th, 27th, 29th, and 30th. I did not turn on my home Mac on the 25th, 28th, nor between July 1-5, and there has been no spam on those days. Is it possible for someone to monitor my IP address and send spam out when the monitor sees me communicating with the outside world?
    What I've done:
    - I created a new mac OS system from scratch on my home computer, containing no files with modified date June 24 or later. That new system is using Norton Antivirus for Mac, firewall on in stealth mode (allowing only email, web, and normal system operation), Little Snitch (I've enabled very few operations to be allowed automatically), and using a Mac OS X account that does not have administrative access.
    - I have tried to change the settings of the AOL free account (at least change the password), but am unable to do so. When I log into my account on the web, click settings and change password, it asks me my security question, then I get a French page (not my choice) showing some of my account settings, with nothing to click that would allow me to change settings. There also seems to be no way to delete or cancel an aol free email address account; the best advice I've seen is that it will be deactivated after 90 days of inactivity, which in this case won't happen if spam is being sent from that address and appearing in the Sent folder. I will continue to investigate ways to do this; I might end up having to write a snail mail letter to AOL Canada asking them to delete the compromised account.
    - I have pretty well abandoned the compromised email account, migrating most of my email subscriptions to a new email address and informing who I can that the old email is a spam source. Is there any way to report the email address as spam centrally?
    - Finally, I am going to contact my ISP today and see what they can do; maybe I can get a different IP address at home...
If anyone has further suggestions I would appreciate it. What a nightmare!
    Thank you,
    Rob

I looked online for an answer to this; I didn't find anything definitive.  I'm wondering if I can get my SQL Server Express to send an email as soon as an SProc runs.  I know a more robust version of SQL Server can do it, but I don't know if the

The SQL Server Express Edition don't support Database E-Mail feature; see

    Thanks in advance

Yeah, I don't know if you can attach a file on a remote server.  Why not just copy it over to the SQL Server machine, and attach it form there (which would be the local machine when the file is downloaded).

I have an IPad that suddenly stopped sending messages.  It places all messages in my outgoing box and says it does not allow relay from the server.  Any ideas ?

Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.
