Configuring 2 V240 servers for redundancy

Hi:
If I have 2 V240 servers, what is needed so that
the standby server will take over when the active
server goes down, or the connection to it is lost?
Both servers are conencted to the Ethernet network
from port bge0. Is there any special cabling needed
between the 2 servers, and what special configuration is needed using ifconfig?
Thanks,
Srini9

If you are using veritas cluster then there is no special cabling requirements for the heartbeat, heartbeat for veritas cluster is via kernel.
I think other cluster softwares you may need 1 or 2 cross cables directly connected to both boxes.
clustering strategy would depend on how much application services you need to provide and how much resources you have on hand and how tolerant is your management toward outages that would depend if the application cluster trying to configure is production or dev?
If you 1 database to cluster then of course do an active/standby but if you have 2 or more databases running should you do active/standby or active/active again depends how rich your company, a server in standby mode is 'very expensive' if it is doing nothing however if you are limited by the number of disks you can spare in a diskgroup to have mirroring for data as well enough to contain all your application you may have no choice in the end but to do active/standby, it all depends on how much resources you can spare, you have to carefully plan how you want to portion out your system resources.
Another consideration is 'how stable is your application running' if your application in standalone mode already crashes often, then configuring a cluster is doomed from the beginning and will have many problems. Since it will not work properly even in standalone mode a cluster will make it worse and a waste of $$$$.
For failover depending on how capable is your cluster software. All clusters do failover for databases, nfs and applications basically start/stop etc ... Some cluster softwares are more configurable will allow you to failover with heartbeat is down, or if network interface is down it will plumb and 'up' another interface on the same server or failover to another box depending on your configuration.

  • Configuring Dual-homed servers for redundancy to 6509s

I am looking for assitance in properly configuring dual-homed servers for redundancy to two CatOS based 6509s. My search for information on how to do this has been unsuccessful to date, so any help you can provide would be most appreciated.
Do I need any special hardware/software on the 6509s and/or on the servers?
    Thanks, in advance.

A lot depends on the kind of servers you have and the NIC teaming algorithms they support. Usually two or more NICs can be teamed in either a fault tolerant configuration (with one primary NIC) or in transmit load balancing configuration. Both these configurations allow the NICs to be connected to separate L2 switches so in case your servers do support such kind of teaming all you need is to have both NICs in the same VLAN and ensure L2 connectivity between the Catalyst 6509s. I recommend you research this from the server perspective also and like everything else test it before production deployment.

  • Two servers with redundant connections for Sun StorEdge 3320 SCSI arrays

    Hello All,
I read in the "Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation and Service Manual" that it's possible to setup "two servers with redundant connections" but I never see a detailed schema to do this. I read also the "Best Pratices Guide" but this case is not mentioned. Is it really possible ?
My objective is to split a Sun StoreEdge 3320 SCSI array between two hosts with dual redundant scsi connection.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
    Francois.

At first this sounded easy, but looking at the parts listing for the 3320 seems to indicate otherwise. They're listing different part numbers for the chassis and midplane...
371-0105 chassis & midplane for JBOD
371-0106 chassis & midplane for RAID array
There are also different part numbers for the I/O boards....
    370-7655 RAID SCSI I/O module
    370-7713 JBOD SCSI I/O module
I can see what the difference is between the I/O modules, but am unsure of what differences if any are in the chassis and midplane. Seems like there's more involved here than what it would be worth to try and make it work. Perhaps the cost of a second HBA would be the lesser of two evils..........

    Hi guys,
i have two sunfire v440 servers which i have loaded Solaris 10 OS on them and i have installed a Web and DNS server on them..However i would like to synchronize both the servers for FAILOVER,so that incase one is down (crashes),the second can take over.I believe their is a daemon which can be used to accomplish this task.

  • Mailbox and Client Access on the same servers for CAS HA (L4 LB) and Mailbox DAG

Hi, I would like to ask this question.
I'm reading all sort of documentation that I'm finding on the internet, but I can't understand if what I'm thinking to do is possible.
I would like to setup a basic environment configuring only two Exchange 2013 on two Win 2012 R2 servers. Both servers will be Mailbox (MBX) and Client Access (CAS). I will create a two-member DAG using File Share Witness or Disk Witness for the Dynamic Quorum.
Then I will setup Outlook Anywhere with internal and external namespace for CAS redundancy and layer 4 load balancing.
In this scenario I will not need to install a third part load balancer.
Am I doing right or I watching a movie?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi ,
You could need to have the HLB or virtual load balancers for redundancy.
Disadvantages of some load balancing methods :
If you use Windows NLB then it can provide redundancy on server level failure and not on application level.
In case if we use the windows round robin method for load balancing then it wouldn't provide server level and application level redundancy during the failures. At the Same time we need to manually adjust the DNS records during the server failure but on the
client end dns caches will create the issues.
Lets consider you are having the internal and external names for outlook anywhere like below .
internal and external outlook anywhere name :
    mail.domain.com
For the above name just configure the HOST A record in windows DNS and map it to load balancer ip.Then the second step would be to configure your exchange servers in LB .So all the internal and external outlook client connectivity will happen via LB to exchange
servers. In that case if anyone of the server is down then LB will automatically make the outlook client to get connected to the server which is alive and at the same time none of the request from outlook client to LB will get forward to the server which is
    in down state.
Note : Make sure you are having the redundancy for LB devices also otherwise it would be a single point of failure on the LB end .
Please reply me if anything is unclear.
    Thanks & Regards S.Nithyanandham

  • Connecting redundant servers to redundant CSS

    Hi,
I'm quiet new with CSS configurations and currently working on an assignment to get two servers (with both a redundant network connection) connected directly to a redundant CSS configuration. I have tried a box-to-box redundancy configuration but i'm having some problems with the fallback and inside connectivity. When i look at all the configuration guides and tips then there's always a switch connected between the CSS and the servers. Before i ask for help with this config i want to know if the design that they've put me up with can work! Attached there's a picture of the design. The servers have teaming enabled with fail-over option. When the primary CSS fails, the secondary CSS will take over. The primary link of the server will fail and perform a fail-over to the secondary link. I have my doubts that this design will work.
I hope that someone can get me started :)
    Kind Regards,
    Daniel

We have seen too many issues in the past with servers using redundant interfaces.
We always end up recommending not to use such a solution and to insert at least 1 switch between the CSS and the servers.

  • 2 Switch stack Design for redundancy

    Hi Everyone,
I need to connect 2 switches in stack which will connect to 2 servers.
Each server will habe 12 NICs.
So for Redundancy purposes i can connect 6 ports from server A to Switch 1
6 Ports from server A to Switch 2
    Same way i can do
6 ports from Server B to Switch 1
6 ports from Server B to switch 2
IF i go with above design and in case say switch 2 dies then stack will have single switch will it cause any outage?

    It depends.
One of your two switches will run in the role of switch master, and if that switch fails, there's a brief impact as control plane function are taken over by the second switch.  Whether this control plane switch over causes any impact to the server hosts depends on switch configuration and how (via L2 or L3) the hosts are communicating to other hosts.  For example, if you're running default, regarding master switch MAC persistence, that MAC will change, which I understand, will drop Etherchannel.

  • Workflows 2013 and SQL Report Services: Configure on Independent Servers or Existing App Servers?

Currently, my SharePoint 2013 Farm has Workflows 2013 and SQL Report Services installed on app servers, along with other applications. Workflows 2013 isn't working correctly (installed prior to my coming on board with the organization), I'm assuming it
is a configuration issue, but rather than re-configure, I've read that is recommended to be a standalone server. It was also recommended by a MSFT rep that our report services have its own independent server. Currently, Report Services is also installed on
an app server that runs other applications on the farm.
Has anyone had any experience with installing Workflows 2013 and/or SQL Report Services on independent vs. existing application servers?
Additionally, my existing application servers have 24 GB of RAM (I believe the recommendation for SharePoint production environments is 12 GB), should I plan for the potentially new servers (Workflows and Report Services) to also have 24 GB of RAM? Not really
sure if it will be needed if they have dedicated tasks.
Thanks for any input you can provide!

It entirely depends on load. WFM will work just fine installed on servers in the SharePoint farm. SSRS preferably should go on the end-user facing servers for better performance.
The questions you're asking are all "it depends" :)

  • Problem configuring front end host for weblogic cluster

    hi,
I am using weblogic 8 sp4,I have a cluster of WLI servers for which i am trying to configure a front end host.I am using apache Http server 2.0.55 for the same.
I copied the mod_wl_20.so file to the modules directory and added the following to httpd.conf file
    LoadModule weblogic_module modules/mod_wl_20.so
    <IfModule mod_weblogic.c>
    WebLogic http://myIP:9191,http://myIP:9192,http://myIP:9193

    </IfModule>
    <Location /weblogic>
    SetHandler weblogic-handler
    PathTrim /weblogic
    </Location>
however, the error page gets displayed and not the default weblogic page.
When I change the Error page url to that of my cluster url(i.e)http://myIP:9191, the weblogic default page gets displayed .. I mean to say that the same url doesnot work with the WeblogicCluster parameter but works with

  • How to Separate Management Servers for Ease of Administration?

    Hello,
I am fairly new to SCOM, though have been charged with creating a monitoring solution for a particular group of customers and integrating it as far as possible into our existing corporate SCOM implementation, so any help, tips and so on would be greatly
    appreciated.
The customer monitoring requirements will be very different to those of our fairly standard corporate environment - we will need to monitor very different technologies, with some systems sat in different domains or a DMZ. Our central servicedesk will still
need to monitor and action alerts and events for both environments as seamlessly as possible.
At the same time, I would like to separate the environments as the configuration of the management servers for the customer environment will be quite different from our corporate one, and I want to avoid having to make changes to all our corporate servers
every time I need to change something on the customer environment - so things like management pack installs, certificate admin, static DNS config and so on.
How would I go about this please? Would it be better to create a separate management group, with servers dedicated to the customer environment, then connect this to the corporate management group so that the servicedesk can still monitor it, or is there
another way of doing it? Perhaps using resource pools? Time will be a factor here, though ultimately the goal is ease of administration going forward.
    Thanks

Using resource pools will not allow you to separate configuration such as MP installs, security, etc. as they are all part of the same management group.  From Technet, "A resource pool is a collection of management servers used to distribute
work amongst themselves and take over work from a failed member."  If configuration needs to be completely separate from the base configuration perspective, you could use separate connected management groups.
Another option is to separate the configuration within the management group.  For example, if you need to monitor SQL computers in your corp environment but not the customer environment, simply create a group containing customer computers and override
the SQL discovery.  This applies to other technologies as well.  You can even group computers by environment (corp/customer) by using reg key attributes like Kevin Holman describes here: (While my account is being verified
I can't post links but you can search "Creating custom dynamic computer groups based on registry keys on agents").  If you are familiar with MP authoring, you could create a new MP with a new Windows Computer based class instead of extending
the Windows Computer class.  From a capabilities perspective, you can certainly monitor corporate, customer, DMZ, and other domains in the same management group.  If the domain is untrusted or in the case of the DMZ, workgroups computers, you can
utilize gateway servers with certificate authentication which will be configured for each domain/dmz gateway.
Ease of administration is a tricky concept here...if you utilize separate management groups, administration will have to be handled completely separate in 2 separate consoles.  If there are separate SCOM admins per management group, this is
of no issue, but if 1 team/person is managing both, this can be difficult.  Alternatively, there will be some up front work to using groups to separate the environments using groups, discoveries, etc.

I have weblogic 8.1 SP5 domain in PROD.

The difference is that admin server unable to send the bootstrap servlet configuration to managed servers, as highlighted above
    Has anyone encountered this issue?
If so, is there is solution to this?
Right now i am doing the work around (Which is restart admin server and then start managed server, for every managed server that does not start)
But i cant do this all the time.
MY domain has 14 managed servers. All of them exhibit similar behaviour.
Some times they start, some times they dont.

Can the CSS rules be configured such that it can be used to direct requests to different Web servers based upon,

    For example:

We're trying to understand what are plans are for a phased migration from old site to new site, and if it requires new URLs ???
Fort port 443, since the CSS is load balancing SSL encrypted traffic, is the means that the CSS can’t look at URL thus this is not possible?

    Hi Martin,

    2) I'm still waiting for the "actual" URL paths from the application team in order to decide which method to use - Regexp vs URLQ definition - to begin testing.
