Configuring a MacPro for Photoshop CS3/Lightroom/CS3 Suite usage

After hearing that Leopard is delayed for a few more months, I've decided to go ahead and buy a MacPro now instead of waiting any longer (was going to hold out until after the WWDC in June). There are a couple of important details that I'm unsure about, and wonder if anyone here offer any wisdom about them.
Right now I'm looking at the quad 2.66GHz MacPro. I'm uncertain about how much RAM to add, as I work with large Photoshop files (up to 1GB in size), and will typically have Photoshop CS3 and other CS3 apps running along side of Lightroom, etc. at the same time. How much memory will Photoshop CS3 be able to really utilize, and how much additional memory would the other applications need on top of that? I'm guessing 4-6 GB of RAM total, but would there be any advantage to having more RAM? I'm also unsure about which video card would be sufficient, e.g whether the Radeon X1900 XT is worth it versus the stock GeForce 7300 GT if I don't plan to use Aperture or two 30" monitors? I don't know how the new Adobe apps will respond to more GPU horsepower if at all.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

How much memory will Photoshop CS3 be able to really utilize, and how much additional memory would the other applications need on top of that?
Presuming Photoshop CS3 utilizes system memory for caching in the same way that CS2 does then the answer is all of it. It's actually quite clever. For instance, if you have 6GB system memory and 3GB allocated specifically to PS, if PS needs more than that 3GB then it'll ask the Mac OS X memory manager to handle the caching. Mac OS X being as clever as it is will do as best it can and if it's available as RAM it'll provide that.
I'm guessing 4-6 GB of RAM total, but would there be any advantage to having more RAM?
That'll depend on how many applications and processes you like to be running at once. For Photoshop it's fine. I would probably suggest starting with 5GB (4 x 1GB + factory 2 x 512MB) and see how you go.
I'm also unsure about which video card would be sufficient, e.g whether the Radeon X1900 XT is worth it versus the stock GeForce 7300 GT if I don't plan to use Aperture or two 30" monitors?
Currently the Adobe CS3 design (as opposed to the video) applications don't make specific use of the GPU. That does not mean it'll stay like that, especially given Adobe has public said they are looking into doing so (whether it pans out is another matter). You might want to consider it as a "future proofing" although I don't believe it's necessary as of today and CS3.

  • Help configuring Mac Pro for Photoshop CS3

Hi all, this will be my 1st Mac and I'm hoping to get the proper configuration for using the Mac Pro with Photoshop CS3.
Since I'm working with large photos (20" X 24" and even larger) and layers my main concern is speed. The Apple store lists five items in their suggested configuration, any suggestions for what upgrades I need to make will be greatly appreciated!
Start building your Mac Pro with our suggested configuration:
    * Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
    * 1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
    * NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
    * 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
    * 16x double-layer SuperDrive
    thanks!!

Well, with a $US5K budget you should be able get a decent configuration. From the Apple Store I would order…
    Mac Pro 2.66GHz 1GB RAM / 250GB HD
    ATi Radeon X1900 XT
    Apple 23" Cinema Display
    Bluetooth & Airport Extreme
… which will cost $US3,726 leaving you plenty for your RAM and drives. I would add AppleCare although you can buy and activate this any time within your standard 1 year warranty period so by buy later you spread your costs.
Now, with RAM I would either buy 4 x 1GB (giving you 5GB and costing approx. $US400) from the manufacturer of your choice else 4 x 2GB (giving you 9GB and costing approx. $US850). The most cost effective is probably the 4 x 1GB as you'll most likely not want more than 8GB RAM in any case.
For your drives you have quite a bit of choice although you need to decide if you want to go RAID and what you're going to do with your backup and/or clone. Photoshop users require fast, small file, disk access which the Maxtor MaxLine Pro excels at and at $US99 each they're quite the bargain. Even though Seagate has chosen to discontinue this drive they're still the best boot/Photoshop drives in the 500GB size.
However, looking larger (750GB or more) such as the Hitachi Deskstar/UltraStar, Western Digital SE16/RE2 or Seagate Barracuda 7200.11/ES.2 You'll find better performance overall simply through their larger sizes. Not to mention you'll be buying current model drives. Be aware that you should buy drives specifically for RAID use if you wish to go that way. It's not a good idea to use desktop class drives in RAID sets hence the two model choices for each manufacturer.

  • EXIF plugin for Photoshop CS3 MAC version

    Hello everyone,
Question: Does anyone know of an industry-standard, reliable EXIF plugin for Photoshop CS3 for MAC? I already have an EXIF tab in my File > File Info tab, but I specifically need a plugin that reads Shutter Actuations from an image. I need to know how many times a camera I just bought has been fired.
    Rambling Backstory:
I just bought a used Canon 1d Mark II on eBay, and I think it may have been misrepresented in the auction. The seller claimed that the camera only had around 29,000 shutter actuations.
She based this number on a program called "Cancount." When I received the camera, I took a test shot, and attempted to download cancount. Unfortunately, I ended up on some German web site, which asked me for 13 euros to download it.
Instead, I downloaded the free, and much more detailed Simple EXIF reader for Mac. This program said the camera was closer to 160,000 shutter actuations.
    Here's the screenshot:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3295/2681473080_c22f82591f_o.png
All I want to know is which program is more reliable, Cancount or Simple EXIF reader. OR, does anyone know of an industry-standard EXIF reader that everyone agrees gives a reliable shutter actuation count? Thanks everyone.

Maybe i am looking at something different here, but i usually check my frame count under photoshops file- info ,and once there i go to advanced, and under the fourth arrow called http-exif, i can see my frame count. it says aux-image number. not sure if that will help you.

Your Mac Pro 2008 should have no problems with CS6.  Not sure about CC or CC2014. Note that Adobe stills sells CS6 with a perpetual license.
I run CS6 13.0.6 on a 2996 Mac Pro 1,1 without any problems or slowdowns whatsoever.  Just make sure you have your Mac equipped with plenty of RAM, a physically separate HD for Photoshop's scratch, and a video card with enough VRAM on it.  See my machine's specs below.
Intel Xeon Mac Pro 1,1 [late 2006] 2.66 GHz Quad; 16 GB RAM; mutant/flashed, factory-overclocked 875/1225 "Apple PowerColor" ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1 GB of GDDR5VRAM driving side-by-side dual 22"/24" monitors in Extended-Desktop mode; Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8 boot drives; intrusive Spotlight and frivolous Dashboard permanently disabled; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet and networked via wired Ethernet. • I can't buy a license for Photoshop and Lightroom!

I live in Sweden and I were browsing the swedish Adobe page a few days ago when I saw that they had a great offer for Photoshop and Lightroom. I tried to sign up and buy it, but when I clicked "Confirm purchase" the page loaded for about ten seconds and then froze completely. I didn't know it had frozen since it was my first try and it said it could take a few minutes. After about 15 minutes though I started to sense that something was up. My computer got really hot and the fans were going at it at the highest speed. I eventually had to close the page to prevent my computer from overheating, but every time I've tried do buy the license since it has done the same thing.
Does anyone know what to do?
I appreciate the help, kind regards Anna Cajsa Holmström.

  • Question about current offer of $9.99 mo for Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5, 20gigs and Behance

If I subscribe for the year under this current offer for photographers, $9.99 mo for Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5, 20gigs and Behance, if I renew in the futrure (even including any increase in price over the coming years), will this offer include newer versions of Lightroom (6 etc), Photoshop and Behance? Or, will I have to buy these separate from my CC subscription?

    Hi jljonathan,
Since you will be purchasing a creative cloud subscription, hence in future the Adobe upgrade of the product will be done simultaneuosly for the whole of Creative Cloud,
The essence of moving to CC is "not to invest separately for the upgrades & the new versions".

  • Lightroom for Photoshop CS3

I have Photoshop CS3.  I bought a Nikon D800.  I cannot download RAW photos from the camera.  I previously had no such problem with the Nikon D700 and RAW.  I was told to buy Lightroom.  I did - Lightroom 4.  When it arrived I saw that I had purchased the UPGRADE.
Are they compatible.  I do not want to open the box if they are not.
    Thank you.
    Jerry Hitchcock

If it says upgrade, then you must own an earlier version of lightroom as it will ask for the number from the previous version. If you don't own lightroom send it back and get the full version.
As a temporary measure, you can download the free DNG converter from ADOBE it will load the latest version of the camera file that it currently supports (it get updated every once and awhile) and it will create a DNG file that photoshop can read.
If I recall it can do a folder at a time if needed, but its been awhile so maybe I am dreaming. LOL.

  • How to install Camera RAW update for Photoshop CS3?

I know this is an ancient version! But for now it's all I need. Anyway...
My Adobe Updater says "No Internet connection.  Please check your Internet settings and/or firewall.  Waiting for connection..." That's the first problem.  I figured out how to manually update Photoshop and Bridge, but Adobe Updater still shows this message when trying to check for updates.  Also, I've tried to update Camera Raw from 4.0 to 4.6 and I can't figure out how to manually install it.  I knkow the website says to do the following:
    Mac:
Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    Open the Finder.
Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user’s home folder).
    Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats.
Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensureyou keep this version in case you need to revert back.
Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 4.
Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.
I manually entered "Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats" and it says this folder doesn't exist.  Can anyone help me update my camera raw?!
    Thank you so much!

CS3 is a very old Adobe product and is not officially supported. Personally, i don't think CS3 will work on Yosemite and even if it does, by any chance, you will face many compatibility and functional issues like above.

  • How to update to Camera Raw 5.7 or 6 for Photoshop CS3???

Just got a Pentax K-7 with PEF raw files, but my Photoshop CS3 can't recognize it. Unfortunately, it looks like all the updates to get PEF is for CS4 or now only for CS5. Is there a way to get the update for what seems already an old version of Photoshop?

    David Casius wrote:
…once ACR 6 is installed on the system you can use an older version of PS to open a RAW file and it will use the newest ACR to do the RAW convertion [sic]…
As written, that is absolutely false.

That is also inaccurate.  I you use Bridge CS5, yes, it will host ACR 6.x.  But if you use Bridge CS4, the latter will host ACR 5.x.  At least in the Mac world.
I doubt Adobe would let such a programming fault get through to the market that would let Bridge CS4 host ACR 6.x.  That would be a gigantic loophole of which many users would take advantage.  Some of us upgrade our version of Photoshop solely to get the latest version of ACR.
    Perhaps you can clarify?

  • Strange, long program name for Photoshop CS3 in Finder Open with

I recently upgraded from Adobe CS2 to CS3 (since they FINALLY fixed the Acrobat issue!), but now when I right-click an image file in Finder, then select "Open with", and look at the suggested programs, I've got these horrendously long, strange program names displaying for Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop CS3. Here's the one that displays for CS3:

I would try resetting your LaunchServices database with something like Onyx or Cocktail (I think it does it too). Note that this will wipe out any custom file associations you might have setup.
