Configuring Airport equipment without internet?

I have some Airport N equipment that I have not used for a long time and I want to update the firmware on them, though I do not want to use them for my network yet.
1. How do you update the firmware on Extreme, Express and Time Capsule units without them being connected to the internet? Can this be done?
2. Is Airport Utility built into Mavericks the best way to configure Airport gear these days?
Thanks.

How do you update the firmware on Extreme, Express and Time Capsule units without them being connected to the internet?
Cannot be done without an Internet connection.
Is Airport Utility built into Mavericks the best way to configure Airport gear these days?
Doesn't really matter which version of AirPort Utility that you use.

  • Configuring airport express without wireless computer

I've got a 2008 Mac Pro with no wireless hooked up to the square Airport Extreme by ethernet cable.  The airport extreme serves other wireless computers throughout the house.  Last year, it was complicated configuring 2011 airport expresses to extend my network using the Mac Pro as the home computer, but I finally managed it with the help of an Apple tech who said most other techs would probably not know the trick to doing it.  It worked great for over a year.
Today, out of nowhere, airport utility came up with an error message and told me I needed to change settings to a LAN bridge.  I followed directions, but the effect was to wipe out all my settings.  I managed to reset and get the extreme back working, but I'm having trouble getting the airport expresses properly configured. Instructions online are based on doing it with a computer that's also wireless.  Part of the trick in configuring involved deselecting a lower button in Airport Utility, then going to areless settings and changing WAN to extend the network.
I wish I would have gone to the trouble of doing screen grabs with each step along the way, but if anyone knows the steps for reconfiguring the airport expresses using a computer without wireless, I'll pay for your kids' college:  or at least ask God to let you win the lottery.

A cool Apple tech, realizing that I was only having problems because their software had topedoed my working set-up, actually gave me a no-charge rundown of the standard procedure using that ethernet trick, which seemed to work up until the last step, but at that point, the update and restart of the apple express failed each time I tried.  From what I remember when I initially configured the express last year, the ethernet trick is part of the right procedure.  Thanks.

  • Use AIrport Express without Internet access?

Friends of ours just switched and helped them purchase and set up an iMac and MacBook. We're rural so they are now using a Verizon USB Modem for internet access, no access to DSL or cable. If they were to purchase an AE can it be used, and how easy is the setup, to create an in-home network to simply communicate between the MB and iMac and stream Airtunes? Also can the Verizon USB modem be used with the AE? Searched forums and it doesn't appear that it can be used but wondering if someone has a work around.
    Thanks.

If they were to purchase an AE can it be used, and how easy is the setup, to create an in-home network to simply communicate between the MB and iMac and stream Airtunes?
The default configuration of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is a wireless router with AirTunes enabled. In this configuration, both Macs should be able to connect to the AX's wireless network and stream iTunes. No Internet connection is required.
Also can the Verizon USB modem be used with the AE?
For Internet access the AX must be connected to an Ethernet modem, or to another wired or wireless network that has Internet connectivity. The AirPorts do not support direct connection to USB-based modems.

  • Can I access UI functionality without internet?

    Hi All,
We have installed SAP CRM 2007.....I just want to know weather Internet connection is mandatory for accessing all the UI functionality...I mean can I access all the UI pages and configure the same without internet connection....
I am aware of how to activating UI services, but not sure weather internet connection is required or not ...
Experts can you pls guide me on the same.......
    Regards
    gmd

Technically speaking as long as you are on the same LAN as the CRM server, you don't need an internet connection.  Your LAN though has to support HTTP traffic, which means "local web browsing".
    Take care,

  • Airport Extreme streaming iTunes without Internet

    Hello.
I no longer have Internet access in my home. I do still have a MacBook Pro streaming 2TB of iTunes media through an AirPort Extreme to two AppleTV's, and 5 iPhones. Music, movies, and TV shows are slow to load since the loss of the introwebs.
I have read about switching to "Bridge Mode" in airport utility but am not sure what this would do other than possibly allow my iPhones to simultaneously connect to my network and have 3G access.
Any ideas on how to speed up the streaming of content?
Your sage advice is greatly appreciated.

I no longer have Internet access in my home. I do still have a MacBook Pro streaming 2TB of iTunes media through an AirPort Extreme to two AppleTV's, and 5 iPhones. Music, movies, and TV shows are slow to load since the loss of the introwebs.
Just so I understand correctly, are you saying since you no longer have Internet access, the overall streaming performance on your local wireless network has decreased? If so, Internet streaming and local network streaming are not directly related and, whether or not, you have Internet access should not matter.
Without Internet access, the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) would not get a Public IP address, but it would have a Private IP address of 10.0.1.1 ... and it would still be providing wireless clients connected to it with Private IP addresses in the 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200 range.
Please compare your AEBSn's settings with the following to see if making any of the changes will help with your local network streaming performance:
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name: <enter a desired Network Name or SSID>
Radio Mode: <unless you have non-"n" clients that you need your network to support, I would suggest setting this to "802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz)>
    Channel: Automatic
    Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
    Internet > Internet Connection
    Connect Using: Ethernet
Connection Sharing: Distribute a range of IP addresses
    Internet > TCP/IP
    Configure IPv4: Manually
    IP Address: 10.0.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router Address: 10.0.1.1
    DNS Server(s): <leave blank>
    Domain Name: <leave blank>
    Internet > DHCP
DHCP Beginning Address: <leave default or change to a desired starting address>
DHCP Ending Address: <leave default or change to a desired ending address>
    Advanced > Logging & Statistics
    Allow SNMP (unchecked)
Your AEBSn will still report at least three errors: 1) Configuration of WAN, 2) SNMP over WAN, and 3) Double NAT. These can all be safely ignored (by disabling them in the AirPort Utility) to stop the AEBSn's status light from flashing amber in this configuration.

  • Can I play ipad / iphone etc direct to airport express without router or internet?

Can I play ipad / iphone etc direct to airport express without router or internet?

Something must produce a wireless signal to do what you want.
The AirPort Express is a router.
Is it possible to configure the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network" and then ignore the messages informing you that you do not have an Ethernet cable plugged into the Express, and do not have an Internet connection / DNS service.

I am trying to understand this.. it sounds like you have it setup in bridge mode.. so it must get an IP from the main router to begin working.
The Airport can work with or without internet.. but it needs to be in router mode to pass IP addresses.. and it will give errors which you must ignore.
It is possible also to setup in static IP mode.. but you will still need to ignore errors.
However to really help I need the whole setup.. I need to know if you are using the wireless in a secondary IP network from internet which is also running.. and if so what IP address ranges are being used.
In other words tell me the entire setup.. what is the main router.. ?? What are the clients? How are they going to connect to the express when there is no internet??

  • Apple TV viewing of my PCs iTunes without internet thru Apple Airport Express

Other than for purchased movies/TV shows, yes. You will need the internet to homeshare protected content though.

can i transmit music from iphone to airport express without being connected to internet? just from phone to express via local network or whatever it's called.

Do you mean Lan cable? Can this be done wirelessly from itunes to airport express without the internet connections?  I can't connect to an airport express that's not connected to the internet.

  • I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work?

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • If I download Mountain Lion on my MBP , can I use the same installer file on a different computer and continue the installation without Internet connectivity?

    Hi Folks,
I have just downloaded Mountain lion on my  Macbook Pro(haven't installed it yet) . My question is, can I copy the same downloaded Mountain Lion from the Applications on to an external hard drive and use the same on a different computer? I am having problems with internet connectivity right now, it would be amazing if it can be installed on the iMac without internet connection.
    So is that doable?
    Thanks in advance

And the 2nd installation would not require internet connectivity? Except , of course during the set up and the configuration of iCloud and location based services, which I can skip at the time

  • Connecting 2 computers thru Time Capsule without Internet?

I had started a question in another area (Mountain Lion) because I am trying desperately to migrate a Windows PC running Windows 7 to a new iMac.  The Migration assistant on both computers does not find any computers.  The Apple Care people say I am doing everything right, but now some people online are saying that I can't do this wirelessly thru Time Capsule (which we have and is the router for our office which the PC is connected to wirelessly).
The new Mac is in set up beginning mode (meaning it has not been set up wirelessly or anything yet), because on launch it offers to move the data from the PC to set up the new Mac.  It is stuck "looking for a computer"
    Here is the whole discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23377824#23377824
Today I went by an Apple store to ask their opinion and the guy told me that I can't connect the 2 computers via ethernet (even though that is what the Migration insturctions say to do), but he said that I shoud be able to connect each computer via ethernet to the Time Capsule and have them recognize each other.
Does this sound right to any of you???
The PC is clear across the room and no where near the internet line, so I would either have to buy a REALLY long ethernet cable to drag over to it, or take the whole computer apart to try and get it near the TC.  The mac of course is no problem to move.
I just don't want to do all this if this will not really act as a network (I guess as a server of sorts).
I am confused as the TC manual says that it can be used without internet, but I don't seehow (I've tried rebooting it without a connection).  I do not know why the internet is involved at all since what we need is the TC to act as a wireless router (which it is) and do not need to involve the internet at all to link the 2 computers.
I am just totally frustrated that these computers should just communicate wirelessly and/or with each other somehow and do not seem to, as Apple says they should.  I know this will turn out to be something really simple and dumb and I'm just not seeing it.
Is it not possible to take the TC and reboot it with the 2 computers connected to it and create a network using the TC as a server or router without needing any internet just so I can get this stuff from the PC migrated (and then never have to deal with it again!!!!)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I think where the confusion lies is that this is a brand new Mac and NEVER been set up.  We are trying to Migrate from the Windows on initial setup - which is what the Mac asks you when you first start it:  Language, Keyboard (english) and then if you are setting a New Mac or wanting to tranfer your info to set up from another Mac or from a PC.  You choose PC and the MA automatically looks for the other PC.  The Windows MA does the same thing.  You launch it on the PC and it looks for the Mac to connect to.
They are not "finding" each other - even when connected directly via the ethernet cable to each other as dictated by the MA instructions  (see the link you provided and click:
Transferring with the Setup Assistant that appears when your Mac starts up for the first time
This is what I am doing.  This is what 2 different guys from Apple Care also said was correct.
They do not communicate.  This is why some in the ML discussion area are telling me I can't do this with an ethernet cable even though these are the instructions.  They are telling me to use the TC as a router between them.
The PC is already wirelessly connected to the TC but when I connect the Mac to the TC it still does nothing (because I assume it hasn't been "set up" yet to the wireless network).
I did not want to set up the Mac initially on its own because then you create a User and Password and when you migrate it creates a second User and will not migrate into the initial one you set up, ergo you forever are stuck with 2 users on login and 2 sets of stuff taking up space in your Mac.
It should do this on start up.  I have NO doubt this is a PC issue, even though I disabled everything I could possibly see to do on it (this is why I need the PC geek in the UK to make sure).  The Apple techs have told me some people have to disable and reboot this stuff several times (ARGH!) LOL!
Anyway I did wonder when I tried yesterday to simply take TC off the internet connection and set it up on its own, I could never get it to stop looking for internet (I rebooted it and reinstalled it with a new name and password), but when you look at it in Airport Utility (I'm using a Macbook for the set up), you see it still blinking looking for internet.
I could not find any instructions for someone to use the TC as a router only or as a server, even though you can see there are more choices in the AU setup tabs.  The one guy at the Apple store (not Apple Care) said that if I connected the 2 computers to the TC it would act as a router and they could "see" each other for me to setup - but this did not work, hence I came here.
Hope I'm making sense!  Thanks so much for your help.

  • Communicate between Mbp without internet

Is it possible or any software that allow me to speak, chat or even video between macbook pro computer or maybe iphone without internet access?
    by using a router network?

If you have a wired or wireless network at home.
You can use bonjor chat in ichat to text/talk/video chat/send files. to use bonjor , open ichat, go to the windows menu and chose Bonjor list. And then change your status to a viable. You need to do this on both computers.
Files can be exchange though file sharing. You can turn this on in system preferences, sharing, check file sharing.
if you don't have a network you can create one. Or use the tricks bellow to make a temporary network.
If you plug to macs together with an ethernet cable. They will create a network between them selfs automatically. (long as your not connected to a wireless network)
If you want to do this wirelessly , you can chose "create network" under the airport menu on the menu bar. to create a wireless network. You could then join the network from the other computer. And use iChat to walk wirelessly.

  • Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers

    Hello!
I´m sorry it took so long to reply, but I´m new to these blogs; and I´ve been travelling a lot... Anyway, I was able to configure Airport Express, but I was told I could use it to expand my wireless network inside my house; which I found it´s not possible.
So, I´m returning my Airport Express to the store tomorrow and try to figure out a way to extend my wireless in any other way.
Any sugestion? Big houses are a problem...
