Configuring Airport Express and Modem/Router

I have a Siemens SX763 ADSL Modem/Router which I wish to use a simply an ADSL modem connected to my Airport Express which will act as wireless network.
I have switched off wireless on the SX763 and also DHCP server, which I expect the AX will act as. However I cannot get an internet connection from modem to AX. The usual connection is PPPoA with username/pwd - other options are PPPoE and Bridging(MER). My suspicion is that I should select bridging here and enter my ISP username/pwd via the AX.
Can anybody confirm my thinking or perhaps offer alternative suggestions?

You have a couple of options here:
I assume that the Express be connected to your Siemens with an ethernet cable, correct?
If you normally use the Siemens in your system, you could turn off the wireless for it and then setup the AirPort Express up as a bridge in your network. The Express would be set to "Create a Wireless Network" The Siemens would then furnish the DHCP and NAT services in this setup.
Alternately, if you wanted to the Express to provide PPPoE, DHCP and NAT services, you would need to set the modem up as a simple bridge. (Here, I assume that there is a setup page for the modem that would allow this.) The Express would be set to Connect with PPPoE and you would need to enter your user name and password during the setup for the Express. The Express would also be set to "Create a Wireless Network" in this configuration.
Either of these configurations should work fine. It's basically your choice of which device you want to handle the log on, DHCP and NAT services.

I am trying to help out a friend, here is what he has and wants to do...
They have an older iMac (bubble base) without Airport. The iMac is connected to a router (Linksys) and the router is in turn connected to his cable internet modem.
When he plugs in the Airport, he can see it, but cannot configure it. I think he wishes to use the Airport only (not sure why he wants to keep the router) but the Airport X has only one ethernet connection point.
Any suggestions on how he can hook this up so he can manage (secure)?

So the current network configuration is:
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] Linksys Router [LAN] > (Ethernet cable) > iMac...correct?
When he plugs in the Airport, he can see it, but cannot configure it.
I am assuming that you mean he has acquired an AirPort Express Base Station (AX)...correct? How can he "see" it if the iMac doesn't have wireless capability?

Airport Express and Linksys Router Problem

I have a Linksys wireless router through which I connect to the internet using my Macbook Pro without any difficulties. I recently purchased an Airport Express unit in order to connect to my stereo and play music using Itunes. However, I seem to be unable to set up the Airport Express as the Airpor Utility does not seem to be able to find it. I tried connecting it to the router using an ethernet cable and this did not seem to solve the problem? Does anyone have any recommendations to solve this problem?

Thank you for the suggestion. That allowed me to see it to configure it but once I disconnect it to restart it I the network cannot find it and it just blinks orange. I am guessing that it is because I have set the network security incorrectly. I set it at WEP 128. How do I check to see how the Linksys is configured? Or do you think it might be something else? Connect to Airport Express and Wireless Router (Linksys) at the same time?

I have a laptop that connects to a Linksys wireless G (WRT54G) router. I just got an Airport Express to play iTunes wirelessly over my stereo. Is there a way to connect to both the Linksys router and the Airport at the same time - i.e., connect to the internet as I was over the wireless router AND send music wirelessly from my laptop to my stereo using the Airport Express at the same time?

If you are using a non Apple router, will the Airport Express seamlessly integrate the original SSID so that only one SSID name shows, or do you have to create another SSID?

There are very few routers that work with Apple's WDS in order to extend wireless networks.

Networking with airport express and another router

I have an imac and a powermac G5 connected to the internet by ethernet cables going through a router, and i recently bought 2 powerbook G4s and an airport express. the laptops are connected to the internet via the airport express (which is connected to the main router with an ethernet cable), and i can access the internet on all of them. However, i cannot share music or files between all of them, only between the imac and powermac connected by ethernet. The laptops seem to be on different networks, and i cannot share files or music between them or with the imac and powermac. is there a solution to this?

Absolutely this solution will work - it has worked perfectly for everyone (including myself) that has done this. Likely what you didn't do last time (and which I pointed out you must do) is restart all your wireless computers after making this change on the Airport Express. This forces all wireless computers to renew their IP addresses, which must now come from the cabled router on your network.
Just to be sure you have explained your setup correctly - please tell me what make/model of router you are using.

My wireless network looses connection between airport express and modem.

The indicator under the "Internet" icon in airport utility switches from green to amber every minute or so. When it is amber I have no, or very slow speed.

Interestingly the Linksys WRT-54G is one of the few non-Apple routers that are WDS-compatible with the earlier 802.11g AirPorts. There are a number of posts on the Internet (use the following search terms: Linksys AirPort WDS) where the authors described how they configured theirs to work.
If; however, you don't want to "experiment," your suggestion to interconnect the two routers by Ethernet should work just fine. In this case, you would want to configure them both for a roaming network.

@ Airport Express and BEWAN DSL MODEM : no internet ..why ?

I connect a BEWAN ADSL Modem to my Airport Express and create a Airport network to have internet access for my Ibook.
I have choose "Ethernet" for Internet access with DHCP parameter.
Here's what i see : the Bewan ADSL modem give to the airport a public IP for the ip address (that comes from my Internet Provider), a netmask and a router ip that is 192.168.1.1.
On my Ibook, i could connect to the airport (printing is ok) but I couldn't have internet access : blank page under Safari...
My Airport Express has the last Firmware....
I think is a trouble between the BEwan ADSL modem and the Airport because I have Internet access when i directly connect the Bewan Modem to the Ibook.. a routing trouble ?
Do i have to manually enter IP parameter of my Airport ?
Have you the same configuration ?

I'd recomend trying a reset and reconfigure. Your setup sounds pretty simple. Hold in the reset button on your AE until the light blinks, let it restart, and choose your unmodified Airport express from the drop down menu. Run Airport Setup assistant from the Utilitiies menu and try to let that program do all the tweaking for you. Once it's up and running, you can go into the wireless settings with Airport admin and reconfigure security if you wish.
This is "just give this a try" advice. It seems I've heard odd things about ADSL modems, so good luck

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

Airport Express and Fios Actiontec router compatible?

I have multiple Airport Expresses and an Airport Extreme. Verion FIOS supplied it own Actiontec router which hooks into their Optical Network Terminal. Since the Actiontec router took over, I've removed the Airport Extreme and the Airport Expresses work only to receive iTunes music from my computers. The Expresses do not extend the WiFi signal anymore. The Actontec router is powerful but at the far end of the house, I no longer get a WiFi signal. Previously with my Extreme and Expresses, I could extend the signal wherever I needed it.
I wonder if I can plug my Extreme into a hardwired LAN terminal from the router and use it to create its own WiFi network in the areas of the house where there is no signal?

Yes, this is possible if the AirPort Extreme stays permanently connected using an Ethernet cable.
If you want to create one "big" network, use the same wireless network name and password on the AirPort Extreme that you use on the Actiontec router. Setup the AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network". The Extreme must be in Bridge Mode to do this.
If you configure the AirPort Extreme with a different wireless network name, then you will need to log on to that network separately each time that you move your computer close to the AirPort Extreme.....then log back on again to the Actiontec when the computer moves back near that router.
If the AirPort Express devices are located where they can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme....and you need even more wireless coverage.....,the Expresses could be reconfigured to "extend" the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme like you were doing before.

I'm using AE purely for music distribution and have just bought a wireless modem for the internet (not a AE). However I can now only select either the AE network, OR the wireless internet network (it's BT HomeHub). Hence I can either play music or use the internet, but not together!
Any ideas anyone..??

You should configure your AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network provided by the modem. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

Airport express and co-axial router

We just got a new cisco router which works off the spilt co-ax cable. My iMac can detect the new network and runs fine on it. But I can't get airport express to recognise the new network. Do I need to physically connect airport express to the router in order to replace it as the default wi-fi network? Airport express was originally set up to run off a different wireless router (which is also still running - yes 2 networks in the house). Thanks

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can provide Internet access in one of three ways:
By being directly connected by Ethernet to an Internet modem or gateway.
By being wirelessly connected to another AirPort or Time Capsule.
By being wirelessly connected to a non-Apple router. Note: With this option, the AXn is only able to supply Internet connectivity via its Ethernet port.

The situation is this: I have a MacBook as described below, and a DSL cable connected straight from my laptop to an Ethernet port provided in my room, not through any modem. I'm living in dorm, so that's how school provides dorm students with internet connection. True! I know that i just need to connect that cable from my laptop into the Ethernet network port. The situation is sometimes i need to stay up late to study but don't have connection past 11:30 (light out time, no more connection). And sometimes, i want to go somewhere else and use wireless network where there isn't one available. For example, my friend's house. I also want to know how the set-up of the Airport Express helps me create wireless network. Do I need a modem or a router to connect Airport express to or else? after setting up, do i need anymore DSL cable or so? Does Airport Express itself function as a wireless access point? One more question: if i set up my wireless connection in my dorm, but later i unplug the Airport Express and go somewhere to plug in, will it still work, or i have to set-up the network again?

Is is possible to use a netgear wireless router to share a cable internet connection between an airport express and a Sony BD player?

I have a couple of netgear wireless routers (WGR614, WPN824 v3) as well as a Belkin wireless router (F5D8233-4v3) lying around, and was wondering if it is possible to use any of these to share the internet feed from a cable modem to both an airport express and a Sony Blu-Ray Player? I connected the WPN824 router between the cable modem and the airport express but the airport express will only give an orange light then as if it does not have internet access. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Many thanks.

What you are basically attempting to do is extend the Belkin router with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) via a wireless connection between them. This method is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, WDS is not a standard and router manufacturers implemented, in most part, to only work with their products ... so it will be very unlikely that you can create a WDS between your Belkin and the AX. There have been a few Belkin model that have been updated by third-party firmware that support WDS, but the models you listed are not any of them.

WDS setup with Airport Express and other(non-Apple) wireless router

I am trying to configure a wireless network with one airport express and one Planex Wireless access point. Can anyone please point me to the settings to be made for such a scenario? I can use either of them as the main WDS device, and have a (wired)router provided by the ISP in the network.(so total 3 devices : airport, planex a/p , ISP router)

I'm having the same problem, both with a Linksys WRVS4400Nv2, and a WRT54G. I've not put much effort into the WRT, but the WRVS was such a pain that I don't think I can get it to work at all.
The WRT doesn't have a section on WDS, but I've read that it's supported anyways, and nothing needs to be enabled on it. Is there a good step-by-step available here or elsewhere that uses close to the same router and Airport Express units, on the latest Airport setup software?
Basically, I'm trying to set this up for a guy in an ~8000 sq. foot house so he has wireless throughout it, and he wants itunes streaming from the AX. Has anyone done this?
