Configuring Airport Express for travel

I have an extra Airport Express that I would like to use for wi-fi access when traveling and staying at hotels with wired access only. I travel a lot where I don't have to bring my MacBook and rely basically on my iPhone. I would like to know how to configure the AE properly at home before I leave so that it always works when I get to my destination.

The key to success here is to know, in advance, the network configuration of your destination ... not always an easy task.
Regardless, you will want to take advantage of configuration profiles.
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can store up to five different configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
To create a new profile:
o Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
o Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
o When done setting the options, click Update.
To switch profiles:
o Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

Will someone talk me through how to configure my AirPort Express so that I am able to play Warcraft? The downloader is telling me that I'm behind a firewall, however I have configured my Firewalls on my computer to allow Warcraft, and it's still not really working.
I'm not the most tech-savvy, any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a very interesting discussion group with a lot of AX users having problems for one reason or another. The main frustration is with, at least for me, the intermittent functionality. As opposed to my wireless laptop, which connects with the network each and every time I turn it on, the AX is good about 75% of the time. And in turn, if iTunes or the Airport Utility can't see the AX there's absolutely nothing you can do to get it to, short of rebooting the laptop, restarting iTunes, etc.
My next plan is to move AX rather close to the wireless router to ascertain if signal strength is the issue.
And I have 'one' last question, are there people out there that have 100% success all the time using AX, especially for streaming iTunes?
    Thanks again.

Is it important or would it help with Airport Express' performance if it was configured for wireless 'g' instead of 'n'? And if so, how do you do that with a pc?

  • Airport Express as travel router?

Going to Europe for an extended stay. The apartment has ethernet but no wireless. I'm looking for a small wireless router to take and use. Of course, it would need to work on 220V (and 110 when I get back home).
It would need to be secured (WAP?) and only a few computers will have access through the router. Would the Airport Express be the best to use? My mac would need internet access on the Mac side and Windows (using Parallels). Other users may be PC's.
What is my best option? Thanks

When you say up to 10 devices, are you referring to 10 computers?
Could be up to a total of 10 computers, iPods, iPads, iPhones or any other device that uses wireless to connect.
    Does Radio mode use DHCP?
It could, but you would run into a Double NAT situation on the network. Normally, you would configure the AirPort Express in "Bridge Mode" since the main router that it would connect to would already be setup to handle DHCP services.
    can you fix mac addresses?
You mean "static addresses" here? Not if the Express is in Bridge Mode. Yes, if it is handling DHCP.
Does it have to be configured (like when adding a router at home onto a DSL modem - ie, gateway, subnet, etc.) or is it simply a plug and play on the ethernet system?
It will take a few minutes for you to assign a name to the device, establish a name for the wireless network and setup a password for the wireless. It might work "as is" out of the box, but there would be no security on the wireless so anyone in the area could log on.
Can I plug it into my ethernet at home and set it up and then plug it in there in Europe and it will work?
Yes, if you have a spare port on your main router to plug into. Once you have the device configured, it will retain its settings.
What is the dual band mode for on the Airport Extreme?
This allows faster wireless devices to connect to the new high speed 5 GHz band while normal devices to connect to the usual 2.4 GHz band at the same time. It's like having 2 networks in 1.
Because most cordless phones and wireless security systems also use the 2.4 GHz band, there is much more wireless interference on this band. Most of the devices you list (iPhone, iPad) would not be able to connect to the 5 GHz band, so you would not need the AirPort Extreme.
If you decide to get the Express, post back if you want a step by step on how to configure the device for travel.

  • Configure airport express with mac book air

I am trying to configure airport express with a Mac Book Air, without success; the program is installed, but then, nothing appears to configure Airpor Express...
Can I get any help? Thank you

    Hello!
I´m sorry it took so long to reply, but I´m new to these blogs; and I´ve been travelling a lot... Anyway, I was able to configure Airport Express, but I was told I could use it to expand my wireless network inside my house; which I found it´s not possible.
So, I´m returning my Airport Express to the store tomorrow and try to figure out a way to extend my wireless in any other way.
Any sugestion? Big houses are a problem...
Best regards, and once again thank you!

  • Configuration of Express for two locations

I have an Airport Extreme wireless network @ one home, using an iMac, a Powerbook 12", a G4 tower, and 3 PC's with no problems for most of the time.
I just bought an Airport Expess for extending the range of the network, also using the Airtunes. The configuration was easy enough and both the iMac and Powerbook can do both internet with extended range and listen to music via Airtunes.
The problem is when I go to my second home I bring the Powerbook and the Airport Express so I can do the Airtunes to a set of powered speakers, but the Powerbook no longer sees it. ( I believe it is because it is looking for my wireless network along with the Expess.) I only have dial-up @ my second home, and have tried to create another profile, which I'm probably doing incorrectly.
There are no clear choices for configuring Airport Express to only do Airtunes, it seems to me that there is always a network to also be configured as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Ron

I don't understand why the Express needs to be connected to the internet either ethernet or wireless to even be recognized by my laptop.
It doesn't. You are doing something incorrectly and unfortunately, we cannot see what you are doing.
I think you need to tell us how you are configuring the profile for the "other" location. You have to have it set to create a wireless network and then you have to join that wireless network.

  • Error -6753 when rtying to configure Airport Express

Hi, I've been using my Airport Express for a long time and I was very happy from day one, as I required a device to play my music and print wireless and the Airport Express was the answer. But for the past month I have nothing but trouble with the AE. I've hard reset the AE for so many times, that I've lost count.
I've gone through forums etc, and I can see that others have the same issue (Error -6753), but the frustrating part is, that nobody (including Apple) have a solution to this problem.
I've tried to configure via my iMac and my Windows laptop, but all of the devices get the same error. I've tried to down grade the firmware, followed by an update, but nothing.
I'm at the point where I will chuck it in the bin, as I had enough.
Can anybody help with this error and provide me (and others) with a final solution.
    Many thanks,

I have used my Airport Extreme without problems for over a year. Suddenly today, it stopped working properly. I can still connect with my broadband cable modem (Motorola, via Comcast), but not wirelessly with my laptop or iPhone.
AirPort Utility finds my Airport Extreme (which I have restored to factory defaults), but I can go no further. Whether I select "Continue" or "Manual Setup," it tries to join the wireless network for a few moments, but eventually just says "An error occurred joining the selected wireless network." At this point, it provides this useless and poorly constructed sentence: "An error occurred, close the configuration window and try again."
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?

How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?

How can I use AirPort Express when traveling?
Connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet port in your room.....to be able to create your own private wireless network in your room for multiple devices.
You will still have to pay the hotel Internet charge for one device, if the hotel charges for Internet access.
If the hotel only provides wireless service, then a single AirPort Express will not help you.
However, if you have two AirPort Express devices, then you can use one to "join" the hotel wireless network, then connect the second Express to the first using an Ethernet cable and create your own wireless network for multiple devices in your room.

  • Adding a second Airport Express for Internet Share?

I currently use an Airport Express for two reasons - either for Airtunes (which is wonderful) and also for Internet Sharing...
My ADSL modem is connected to my eMac via USB and if I turn on Internet Sharing to Airport (in the Sharing prefs pane) I can access the internet from my iBook or G5... but this way, I lose Airtunes... so it's Airtunes or Internet and not both at the same time.
I'm thinking of buying another Aiport Express so I can keep Internet Sharing turned on and use the other one for Airtunes. Is this possible?
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Jonny

You would be better off replacing your USB Modem with an ethernet modem wireless router and connecting your Macs to that network rather than use a Mac based software base station.
Having said that, your problem arises as you have two wireless networks, the eMac based network and one created by the Airport Express (AX).
You can re-configure your Airport Express to join (as a client) the eMac wireless network and then you can maintain internet sharing and use Airtunes.
Ensure that the eMac is working as the software base station.
    Hard reset the AX.
Configure the AX (probably best to do this from the iBook or the G5) to join an existing wireless network and choose the eMac wireless network.

  • HT3728 I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

  • Airport Express for AirTunes. Problems.

I have a Windows XP computer and Laptop with a Linksys G wireless router in my house. Laptop connects to the router wirelessly and the desktop is hard connected to the router. Everyone is talking to each other nicely and I decided to invest an Airport Express for the sole purpose of playing itunes from my computer on speakers in another room.
I bought the Airport Express and have had nothing but disaster. I don't want to use it to create another network, just to "join" my existing network. So the first thing I do is plug it in with only the speaker connection plugged in. I have not plugged in an Ethernet cable or anything else.
According to the "manual" it is supposed to go solid yellow, blink and then go solid green. Because my home network is PW protected, I would have thought it could not "connect" to it on its own, but from just plugging it in to the wall outlet, I never get solid green, just flashing yellow, which apparently is bad.
Anyways, I use the software (updated over the net of course) to set up and it is looking for a "base station" (which is confusing to me because I don't have an Apple base station, I have a linksys router and the stupid Airport Express box plugged into the wall). At any rate, it "finds" the Apple base station and appears to treat it as an unsecured Apple network, with some funny id. I do "manually configure" and I tell it I want to use it for AirTunes, and I don't want to create a new network, I want to join it to an existing network. I give it the SSID of my home network as well as the 64 bit encryption key (that is not autogenerated, but that I manually type in), and that's it.
While I am able to get a message that it is ready to use (and I no longer see "Apple XXXX" as one of the available networks when I scan for available networks) the light on the Airport Express never stops blinking yellow, and it has done something to my home network because my laptop now is unable to keep a wireless connection to the router. I checked all my settings and they all seem to be ok, my desktop which is hard wired connects fine, but my laptop either won't connect at all, or connects and then drops. I have re-started everything including the router (not re-set, just unplug and plug back in) but my laptop now is totally not connecting and the Airport Express still doesn't work.
Sorry for the rant, but any suggestions?

Hello Birdman325. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Because my home network is PW protected, I would have thought it could not "connect" to it on its own, but from just plugging it in to the wall outlet, I never get solid green, just flashing yellow, which apparently is bad.
Not necessarily. A flashing amber status light generally indicates that the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is not connected to a network. Since the default configuration of the AX is a wireless Internet router, the flashing status light would be normal.
Anyways, I use the software (updated over the net of course) to set up and it is looking for a "base station" (which is confusing to me because I don't have an Apple base station, I have a linksys router and the stupid Airport Express box plugged into the wall).
The AirPort utilities are specifically designed to work only with AirPort base stations, so it would be normal for it to try to "find" base stations.
At any rate, it "finds" the Apple base station and appears to treat it as an unsecured Apple network, with some funny id.
Again, normal. Remember the default configuration of a powered AX is a wireless Internet router ... since you don't have it connected to the Internet, the utility will find it as a stand-alone wireless network that is unsecured.
While I am able to get a message that it is ready to use (and I no longer see "Apple XXXX" as one of the available networks when I scan for available networks) the light on the Airport Express never stops blinking yellow, and it has done something to my home network because my laptop now is unable to keep a wireless connection to the router.
    Let's double-check your AX's settings ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing Linksys wireless network>
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

Lots of existing threads, but no consistent answer - what settings need to be applied to the 2012 (new) Airport Express for it to work at hotels with an ethernet only connection?  Any answers specific to Japan would be helpful.  I would prefer not to take my old Dell laptop and just be able to use my Ipad 2 via the wireless connection that the Airport Express creates.  However, I can configure the Airport Express at home prior to leaving if that is the best thing to do.

I have a very similar problem with my AE! My MacBook, MacBook Pro & iPod Touch (1st Generation) all get a GREAT signal from our AE. BUT, our iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and new iPad (WiFi) get terrible signal strength unless we're right next to the AE!! Tech support at Apple is of no help! I'm ready to sell them all! This all started when we got the last OS update for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. So it must be a software issue not a hardware one..
    Any ideas?

How is the extreme setup? New extreme cannot be setup with 5.6 utility.. you must use latest 6.3. Which also means you cannot setup from computer using less than Lion .. or you must use iOS with latest utility but it has limited configuration cf the computer version.
IPv6 is also needed.. turn on local link.

  • Love airport express for music throughout the house but it goes dead from time to time

Airport Express for music just goes dead
is there a quick fix to this

You don't really want 2 wireless networks. After you get the Linksys set up, you will want to configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network created by the Linksys base station. You will then have one wireless network that provides Internet and wireless music streaming.
Use the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode to configure the AX.
