Configuring dial-up on iMac G5 with External Modem

Ok guys... I give-up. I bought an external USB modem. I don't know what to do to make it work? What detailed procedures should I do for the iMac to read it as a modem from the USB port????
When I open internet connections configurations, the only ports available are firewire, airport, bluetooth and ethernet; nothing about USB.
Help please? Anyone who has the modem working, can you tell me what did you do? There's nothing in the manuals that explains how to set it up!
Thanks in advance...

Yes it is set on automatic and I've tried everything from plugging and unplugging and rebooting.
And I'm sure the problem is not the modem because I tried it on my Windows based Laptop and it worked perfectly as soon as I plugged it without even doing any configuration.
Weird. Tomorrow I'll go buy an apple one.
Does the apple modem work right away or do I have to select something from the list before it works? I mean is it readable right away or do I have to also select Bluetooh and configure the dial-up? Pardon my ignorance, I'm not too much into Mac configurations yet. I switched only last august.
Please advise...
Thank you

  • Is the latest iMac compatible with external raid 1 drive setups?

I'm considering different new Mac options to replace my first gen Mac Pro. The new and most outfitted iMac seems like a good solution for my mostly Photoshop work. But, is the new iMac compaticle with Thunderbolt external RAID multi drive enclosures?

Sure, why not contact OWC (www.macsales.com) where they sell RAID solutions for Macs. Because they specialize in Macs they test every product they sell.

  • IMac 27" with external Apple 24" LED Display

    Hi,
I want to know if is there a method to sync the brightness of the two monitor. Everytime I have to change the brightness of the first monitor, and after the one of the second...
Another thing. All the two monitors (the imac and the external apple 24 led display) have stereo speakers. Is there a program or an option to listen using all the speakers and not only one ?
    Thank you.
    Alvise Susmel

My understanding is that the mini-DisplayPort out on the new iMacs does not include audio so if you only connected the Apple 24" LED display via mini-Displayport, you won't be using the speakers in the external monitor. If you also plug in the 24" display's USB cable, then I assume you should get audio as well externally but no internal iMac speakers would be active then since System Preferences only allows one sound source/output to be active. I think you know all this. Are you looking for a hack that would allow multiple sound outputs to be active?

  • IMac 1920x1080 with external 1280x800 display

    Hello,
In using a new iMac with it's native display at 1920x1080 (16:9) connected to a native 1280x800 (16:10) projector: Is there a way to keep the iMac's display native 1920x1080 res while sending a 1280x800 res to the projector? I am assuming that doing so will result in the iMac's display following the display port's signal of 1280x800, thus distorting the iMac's image.
Will I need a video scaler?
I want to send native resolutions to both the internal and external display to preserve quality. The two resolutions aren't compatible, though in aspect ratio they are very close, so the iMac's monitor will still serve pretty well in regard as a reference to what is projected, even though the res is different.
    Thanks!

If the projector has the ability, I guess I could just scale the projector down to 1280x720 at it's input. Or, run it at full res and live with the thin masking top/bottom (if it has digital masking, otherwise mask the screen).
My real question stands as: can the iMac run it's native res and output a different res simultaneously? LOL...sorry, just thinking this through....

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

  • I recently purchased a new iMac with an external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  Comments?  Help?

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • IMac as an external display, problem with trackpad/mouse pairing

    Hi,
I am trying to use the imac as an external display for a macbook air, which is well supported/advertised by apple.
I can toggle the display easily between the imac and the macookair, the problem I’m having is that I only have one wireless keyboard and one wireless trackpad. As I toggle the display, the paring/unpairing of both trackpad and mouse is a real hastle becuase I have to manually go into bluetooth preferences and adjust the settings for both devices.
Anyone using the imac as external display with an idea/suggestion how to make this process more friendly?
Thank in advance for any help.

I don't think you can.  Wish I had better news.  Target display mode for non-thunderbolt 27" Imacs worked OK.  I have done it myself on a late 2009 iMac.  The new iMacs can only go into target display mode when connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt.  So a new macbook or macbook air can do the trick but your dell can't.  What you can do is remote desktop or VNC to the dell.  Now your dell screen will show up but in a smaller window.

  • Configuration problem with external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive

How do I fix a configuration problem with my external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive which used to both read and write. Something has happened so that the drive is now read only? There is 600 GB of data on the drive that I cannot lose, thus am very concerned about messing around with formatting the drive which is raid 1 and filled with data.

may not like to hear, but I'd skip on MyBook cases, nice looking as they are.
Get a 2nd drive case to recover to.
    http://www.macsales.com/firewire
may need to play with the demo Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft
Backup/recover before repair is usually in order
never have one backup set. THREE sets of your data, minimum.
3rd party disk maintenance and repair should be a must and given rather than rely solely on Apple Disk Utility.
Data and system maintenance and recovery plan - should be like practice for sports, arts, military with practice and making sure you will know how and the tools you need - ahead of time
Resetting USB/FW ports, try another if one won't work. When 10.6 came out there was a lot of grinding teeth with external drives not working or mounting.

  • Proper shutdown Imac with external hard drives

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo Imac. I have a USB 2.0 external drive for Time machine and a firewire external drive for my Photos.
    3 questions
1-can you just turn the computer off without concern for the drives (ie) should we put them away first or just turn the computer off?
2-when you install apple software updates, the computer needs to be restarted, do we just restart and not concern ourselves with external drives?
Sometimes I shut all 3 down to be environmentally sensitive. After I turn the computer off, i turn off the power strip to the external drives. the last time I did this, I had a hard time getting the photo firewire drive to mount, it finally did after some manipulation of cords and downloading latest OSX software update. what precautions do I need to take.
    thanks for answering this!
    diana

can you just turn the computer off without concern for the drives
Shutting down the computer normally automatically puts the drives away. If you're going to force it to shut down or restart for some reason, eject the drives first.
do we just restart and not concern ourselves with external drives?
See above. Some updates may recommend that the drives be unmounted manually first.

  • IMac won't boot with external drives attached

I am using iMac 27" Late 2013 model upgraded to mavericks 10.9.4. Two external drives are always attached with it, one is segate 3.5" 2TB USB 3.0 drive and another one is 2.5" usb 2.0 drive.
when i start my imac with external drives attached it won't boot up. Stuck at plain white screen after a startup chime, not even any apple logo or any progress circle appears. And i have to detach all of my drives to make it boot.
This problem arises after upgrading to mavericks. Already tried resetting PRAM, SMC and checked Startup disk and verify disk with disk utility.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
