Configuring Dual-homed servers for redundancy to 6509s

I am looking for assitance in properly configuring dual-homed servers for redundancy to two CatOS based 6509s. My search for information on how to do this has been unsuccessful to date, so any help you can provide would be most appreciated.
Do I need any special hardware/software on the 6509s and/or on the servers?
Thanks, in advance.
John

A lot depends on the kind of servers you have and the NIC teaming algorithms they support. Usually two or more NICs can be teamed in either a fault tolerant configuration (with one primary NIC) or in transmit load balancing configuration. Both these configurations allow the NICs to be connected to separate L2 switches so in case your servers do support such kind of teaming all you need is to have both NICs in the same VLAN and ensure L2 connectivity between the Catalyst 6509s. I recommend you research this from the server perspective also and like everything else test it before production deployment.

  • Configuring 2 V240 servers for redundancy

    Hi:
If I have 2 V240 servers, what is needed so that
the standby server will take over when the active
server goes down, or the connection to it is lost?
Both servers are conencted to the Ethernet network
from port bge0. Is there any special cabling needed
between the 2 servers, and what special configuration is needed using ifconfig?
    Thanks,
    Srini9

If you are using veritas cluster then there is no special cabling requirements for the heartbeat, heartbeat for veritas cluster is via kernel.
I think other cluster softwares you may need 1 or 2 cross cables directly connected to both boxes.
clustering strategy would depend on how much application services you need to provide and how much resources you have on hand and how tolerant is your management toward outages that would depend if the application cluster trying to configure is production or dev?
If you 1 database to cluster then of course do an active/standby but if you have 2 or more databases running should you do active/standby or active/active again depends how rich your company, a server in standby mode is 'very expensive' if it is doing nothing however if you are limited by the number of disks you can spare in a diskgroup to have mirroring for data as well enough to contain all your application you may have no choice in the end but to do active/standby, it all depends on how much resources you can spare, you have to carefully plan how you want to portion out your system resources.
Another consideration is 'how stable is your application running' if your application in standalone mode already crashes often, then configuring a cluster is doomed from the beginning and will have many problems. Since it will not work properly even in standalone mode a cluster will make it worse and a waste of $$$$.
For failover depending on how capable is your cluster software. All clusters do failover for databases, nfs and applications basically start/stop etc ... Some cluster softwares are more configurable will allow you to failover with heartbeat is down, or if network interface is down it will plumb and 'up' another interface on the same server or failover to another box depending on your configuration.

Bad enough the CRT settings will ot start my 20in VGA till I restart the video on an old low-res monitor.
No where near ready to install the Server pack. Looking thru the web stuff, there are Unix like files (missing) to force the addresses and default route. No ifconfigd found.
Where do I find a netconfig, rc.conf or like files to force the Mini (OS 10.4.7) to come up with my two interfaces and default route?

Without configuration sync enabled, you would have to configure both Nexus 5K exactly the same for the FEX port before traffic will forward.
Configuration sync would help you in only having to configure it once, but I have had mixed results using configuration sync so I tend not to use it in my deployments.

  • Dual-homed servers connected directly to redundant CSSs

    Hi.
I have no experience with Cisco content switches and I need help with this implementation:
I have DMZ on PIX cluster, where are 3 couples of servers and I need to load balance traffic to them.
I want to connect PIX cluster to L2 switches then connect L2 switches to redundant CSSs and servers directly connect to CSSs with dual-home (primary NIC to primary CSS and secondary NIC to backup CSS). I'm not sure whether this dual home connection will work correctly. What kind of CSS redundancy ssould I use?

dual NIC does not work with server directly connected to CSS.
You should connect your servers to a pair of L2 switch and then connect the L2 switch to the CSS.

    Gilles.

  • Single Homed or Dual Homed FEX

With the ability to do enhanced VPCs now on the FEXs is there any benefit to have a mixture of having of single attached FEXs and dual homed FEXs?
Here are some benefits as I see them
Single homed FEX is easier to trouble shoot as the topology is not as complex.
A dual homed FEX will support both dual attached hosts and a single attached host. So this means we only have one topology to deal with (everything dual homed)
    Any other pros or cons?
    Thanks

If you have any servers with only one uplink, you want dual homed FEXes for redundancy.
Also, it depend on the number of FEXes you are connecting to the same set of switches.  For example: the max number of FEXes that can be uplinked to a set of 6k switches is 24 if you are dual homed, but if you are single homed the max is 48 (24 per switch).

  • Redundancy with dual nic servers

Hi I have 2 11500's configured with box-to-box redundancy. I have a number of app servers each with dual nic's (which are Teamed) and which are connected directly to the CSS's. Nic 1 in each goes to the master CSS1 and is therefore live. Nic2 goes to standby CSS2.The CSS's are connected two 4500 switches to the public.I am monitoring the links to the 4500's,if i switch off the master CCS1,we fail over and the servers all connect via nic2 to the new master CCS2. But when the link to the 4500 from the CSS1 Master goes down the CSS'S failover but the nic2's do not connect to the CCS2 because Nic 1 in each server has not failed ie they still see CSS1 as up. Is there a workaround to this problem ?
    Thanks
    J

I know of no way to link CSS interfaces so that if the uplink goes down, the the other ports are shutdown. There may be another way to configure the adapter teaming or failover on the server side. I know some OS's send out test frames from one adapter to the other to verify network integrity.
What I'd recommend is that you setup a VLAN on your 4500's for the server's physical connections, and uplink that to a "backend" interface on the CSS. This can be done with the CSS in either a router or bridge configuration, but I'd recommend router mode.

  • Two servers with redundant connections for Sun StorEdge 3320 SCSI arrays

    Hello All,
I read in the "Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation and Service Manual" that it's possible to setup "two servers with redundant connections" but I never see a detailed schema to do this. I read also the "Best Pratices Guide" but this case is not mentioned. Is it really possible ?
My objective is to split a Sun StoreEdge 3320 SCSI array between two hosts with dual redundant scsi connection.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
    Francois.

At first this sounded easy, but looking at the parts listing for the 3320 seems to indicate otherwise. They're listing different part numbers for the chassis and midplane...
371-0105 chassis & midplane for JBOD
371-0106 chassis & midplane for RAID array
There are also different part numbers for the I/O boards....
    370-7655 RAID SCSI I/O module
    370-7713 JBOD SCSI I/O module
I can see what the difference is between the I/O modules, but am unsure of what differences if any are in the chassis and midplane. Seems like there's more involved here than what it would be worth to try and make it work. Perhaps the cost of a second HBA would be the lesser of two evils..........

    Hi,
We have N2K dual homed to 2 N5K. The N2K registers the fex with one of the N5K. But when one of the N5K fails it takes more than a minute to register with the second N5K.

    Hi guys,
i have two sunfire v440 servers which i have loaded Solaris 10 OS on them and i have installed a Web and DNS server on them..However i would like to synchronize both the servers for FAILOVER,so that incase one is down (crashes),the second can take over.I believe their is a daemon which can be used to accomplish this task.

  • IronPort ESA - HA and Dual Homing

Hello, i have a customer that want to do HA and Dual Homing implementation. I want to ask what is the best way to implement HA for IronPort ESA? As i know the cluster configuration only used so the policy can be distributed equally. And what about dual-homing scenario? Is it supported with IronPort, and how do it works ?
    Regards
    Alkuin Melvin

What exactly do you mean by multi-homing? Ironport email appliances support configuration of multiple interfaces (physical or vlan) , to which you can then attach Listeners (SMTP processes). You could thus configure your servers to receive or send email on multiple IP addresses, depending on your network config.

  • How to replace Nexus5596 with dual-homing N2K

What is the correct process to replace a FEX parent switch with dual-homing fex?
    Traffic should not be interrupted.

    Hi
Do you have VPC between Parent Switches & are you running VPC on dual homed FEX fabric ports. ?
If yes Below is the procedure,
    1)  boot the replacement switch without VPC, peer-links & FEX ports connected to it.
    2)  Make sure it has same Software version matches with the peer switch.
    3)  enable Pre-Provisioning for slots with appropriate FEX model.
    , here find the guide:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/system_management/521_n1_1/b_5k_System_Mgmt_Config_521N11_chapter_0100.html#task_05BB53AD7AFB49CF9A8E4A5C6C37CB38
So, on the replacement switch you will pre-provision the Fabric Extender and configure the ports so it will be ready when you add the module to the RMA SW.
Please make sure you put the appropriate FEX model on the provision slot, otherwise, when connected it will not come Online
    Example, FEX 110:
    N5K(config)# slot 110
    N5K(config-slot)#provision model N2K-C2248T
    4) Now  keep all ports at Shut down state Then Configure Entire switch that includes FEX host ports, FEX Fabric Ports & VPC peer-link, VPC Domain Configuration.
keep FEX host ports in shut state.
    5)  keep VPC Role priority on existing switch lower than , new switch
    6) Connect Peer-link ports to Peer switch & wait till VPC Comes up-
    7) Then connect Fabric ports from FEX to the pre-configured ports on replacement switch
After it comes online Unshut FEX host ports.
I got similar steps here as well
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/operations/n5k_vpc_ops.html#wp425197
NOTE: I followed same process however, few ping drops were seen....arnd ( 5- 6 ping loss) only on few hosts...
