Configuring Mac Setup (Hardware)

I'm looking at putting together a decent small production set up for Photography, Music Production & Video Production.
I was comparing options of a 27" iMac i7 vs 27" LED ACD + Mac Pro.
BUt was thinking of continuing my usage of my 13" MBP, and getting an iMac 27" i7 + Mac Pro Quad or Hexicore.
13" MBP - mobile work, offsite work.
27" iMac - Onsite, in house production editing and arranging.
Mac Pro - with the iMac connected to the Mini-DP port; with OS X Server managing all the computers, throwing Final Cut Server on there, as well as Logic Node and use the machine as a processing/storage farm with 4x 2TB HDDs plus a 128GB SSD Boot/OS Drive
any advice or tips on the logistical elements of a set up like this? practical?
thanks

If you don't need to have a laptop I've been setting up several groups of print designers from Dual Xeon Mac Pro's to i7 imac 27". They work high-res "for print" files and photographs as well most Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver. While they're not portable the designers are very happy with the increased speed from the upgrade and both the MacPros and the newer iMacs have 16GB RAM, standard HD's and 2GB Video Cards, though I would spend the extra money on the 4GB cards going forward. Other Mac IT folks I have talked to have replaced many of their graphic workstations with iMacs and had great success. Mac's laptop line is too busy getting thinner and lighter to be much more than a secondary work machine for people on the road all day. If you need to be portable but spend more time at a desk in an office somewhere I'd invest in an iPad and a dedicated system over the laptop.
If you are planning on doing high end video editing or 3D rendering I would suggest the Xeon Pro's, over the iMacs i5 or i7, they are workstations and very capable with those types of tasks.

  • Adding Internal RAID 1 to Configured Mac Pro

I'm trying to add a disk to my existing and configured mac pro to mirror what is currently on the OEM drive. I've already purchased and installed the second drive (identical brand and model). I seem to be stuck on a few details and hoping I can get some assistance.
I've opened up disk utility and I can see the new unpartitioned drive along with the previous existing drive. When I click on the RAID tab it says to drag disks to the list box, but the existing drive won't go into the box, only the new one.
I would appreciate if anyone knows the steps to make this happen or if I'm missing something. Do I simply need to restore (even though I haven't set up a RAID set before)? Can I not create a RAID set with an existing drive? Thanks for the help.

    Hi Robert j. Carr;
I think a much more basic question is why do you want to do this? Exactly what do you hope to gain?
If all you are looking for is protection from disk failure then RAID 1 can do that.
If on the other hand you are thinking this will give you a real time backup, I think you are sadly mistaken. Any data on a RAID 1 array must be backed up.
Think about this, say you have an application open and it had a dozen files opened. The application aborts and takes the files with it. How can you recover with RAID ! array?
You can't because as soon as the application had aborted, the files were removed from all of the disks in the RAID 1 array.

  • How to configure mac book pro with Logic 9?

I would like to run Logic 9 on a Mac Book Pro (13", 2.9 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HD) as a secondary development platform  (for composing while away from my primary system), and do it on the cheap. So I would like to do this without having to buy an audio interface or sound card. I need to do only the following:
    1. Direct Logic output (both software instrument tracks and audio tracks) to the audio-out jack (NOT built-in speakers), and
    2. Record with a USB (or firewire) microphone to an audio track on the same project which is playing software instruments and possibly other audio tracks thru the audio-out jack.
Is it possible to configure mac/logic this way without an additional interface?
    Thanks.

    1) When you plug speakers into the audio out jack, all audio is automatically routed from the internal speakers to the Audio Out jack...
    2) Most USB mics are class compliant and so you just plug them in and they work in Logic without any config in Logic needed.
So, to answer you question, for your needs, you don't need an audio interface.

  • Is there a way to configure Mac Mail ...?

I have an IMac desktop, a MacBook & a 4th generation IPod Touch.  As it now stands whenever I receive email it goes to all 3 devices necessitating the need to physically read and/or delete the messages from all 3 devices.  Is there some way to configure Mac Mail to eliminate these steps or do I just have to keep manually removing mail messages as I'm now doing?
Thanks for any help you may have.

Create your accounts for IMAP instead of POP.
Here's a little youtube explaining the difference (ignore the sales pitch).
imap vs pop - what do they do?
In Apple Mail preferences, Accounts, when you go to set up a new mail account you click the plus in the lower left as usual.  When the Add account sheet is displayed if you press the option key while clicking the Continue button you will be given a window to define the account as POP or IMAP.
Alternatively if you enter an invalid email address into the Add Account window and juct click Continue (no option key) you will again be given the IMAP/POP choice.  This technique I think will work in the other itoys as well.

  • WRT54G Mac Setup

Just bought a WRT54G v8 for a Mac running 10.4.6. Hooked it up, got internet connection fine. Went to 192.168.1.1 and the browsers timed out. Tried Safari, Firefox and IE. Have reset the modem five times by now. Went to Ask Linksys and tried the router IP address in my network manager and still no connect to the online UI. Spent an hour on the phone with tech support and they say I need a windows machine to config correctly before I install on a Mac. Yet, I've seen a bunch of Mac users saying it's easy to do.
Any idea why I can't get onto the online UI? Firmware upgrade? I read through those postings and they seem unclear as to exactly how to do it properly. Maybe my brain is tired.
    Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, and I realize that. Have been working with Macs for 17 years now. This is a G4 I have had for several years and have never had a problem with connectivity through the ethernet port or accessing the internet. The user guides are vague and outdated with the newer versions of OSX. I've rarely heard of having to "setup" a Mac. A PC, sure. Third-party hardware in a Mac, sure (I've worked Mac IT for years). But Macs have been mostly plug and play in their simpler configurations. The onboard Apple native hardware rarely requires tinkering by the operator, unless it fails. If you can suggest the type of NIC settings I should be concerned with, that might help. Thanks!

  • Best wireless network configuration with my hardware

I have a rather large property and over the last year or so I have acquired the following hardware. Up until now I have been extending my network wirelessly to get through coverage. However with the recent addition of a Time Capsule and the addition of AT&T U-Verse, I decided it was time optimize my network configuration
    The Hardware:
    • 1 AT&T Residential Gateway (With WiFi)
    • 1 Airport time Capsule
    • 2 Airport Extreme 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet)
    • 1 Airport Extreme 802.11n (Fast Ethernet)
    • 1 Airport Express 802.11n (used mostly for printers)
    The Computers:
    • Mac Pro 8 core 2.8Ghz
    • Mac Mini Core Duo 1.83Ghz
    • Macbook Air Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz
    • Lenovo T60p (with 802.11n)
    • Ipod Touch
The slowest system is the Mac Mini with it's 802.11g however it is close enough to the TC / Residential gateway to wire into the network. All the other systems need to take advantage of the Wifi and have the ability to use the 802.11n speed. I'm not too worried about the ipod touch...
So I know I am reaching a point of diminished returns by constantly extending my wireless connection. Now, would it be beneficial to set the TC as kind of my main Wif access point and use eithernet to connect my Airport Extremes to extend my network?
I have the built in 802.11g of my AT&T RG disabled right now. I could create a 2nd network to allow the connection of my mini and iPog touch. but for the most part i would prefer to leave it disabled.
One thing to take into consideration. Due to the nature of AT&T U-Verse and the connection from the AT&T RG and the TC/AP Extreme bust be in bridge mode giving DHCP control to the AT&T RG.
    Whew. Any thoughts?

Ethernet as many routers as possible. Place secondary routers in bridge mode. Separate the N devices to a router (TC) from N+B/G devices should go to the secondary routers. Once done set wireless to create their own network. All N computers to N router ie TC and the remainder to which ever secondary router you prefer.

  • Error in configuring - problem with "hardware configuration"

    Hi again,
I have juste captured some DV - PAL Anamorphosé 48k 16bit video form a Sony DCR-PC2E.
I wanted to recapture some clips and I had a message form FC that says "An error occurred while configuring QuickTime using current capture preset. Pleas quit Final Cut Pro and check your hardware". I reseted my FCP preferences with Preference Manager (because I had modified the DV - PAL Anamorphosé setup).
When I open the log and capture window it doesn't say anything, my camera gets "seen by FCP" and I can play forward, backwords...for the capture window who says "VTR OK". (same as before I restored my settings). There is still no image of the video. If I try to capture "now" is doesn't work (the preview window appears black for a second and disappears). If I log a clip and do a batch capture the preview of the capture is black and the capture does not stop at the out timecode. I then press escape and it indicates that the capture aborted and my clip is still off line.
    What can I do ?
    Thanks for reading !

You don't need to install PI 7.1.
You need to download the content as mentioned in the weblog & upload it manually..

  • Post-Install New Mac Setup

After netinstalling our 10.5 macs, we're seeing the startup screen (registration, new admin accounts, etc), even though we've suppressed this in the base image, and added it again to the System Image Utility Workflow (out of desperation to get this to go away).
Here is what we've executed on the base image (which works fine if we do a local restore, like ASR or block restore):
    touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    touch /Library/Receipts/.SetupRegComplete
Since we just threw the image into the netinstall workflow, it was obviously overridden, so we added the scripts to the netinstall workflow as post-install items. It still doesn't work, and properly suppress the registration/accounts setup process.
What could we be missing here?
    Thanks,
    j

    Brian,
+So (to reiterate), you've installed, configured, and booted into this system (to insure that the system has had an opportunity to do whatever it needs to do). Then you imaged the volume, presumably in TDM, and when you restore this, it wants to create a new user?+
    Yep!
If we use the image on a mac booted into firewire disk mode (or ASR multicast), and then reboot that mac, it starts up and does not go through the registration routine - which is good.
+How was the source volume created? (Clean install, upgrade from something?)+
We used instaDMG - clean and no upgrade.
+Did you make the image using the Assistant mode (select the volume and build a "NetInstall")? Or use the workflow mode? If workflow... what other actions did you include?+
We selected the volume and chose to do a netinstall in a workflow mode.
    We have:
    1) Define Image Source
    2) Enable Automated Installation (choose volume)
    3) Create Image
    4) Add Packages and postinstall scripts (script was commands i put in my first post)
The weird thing is that it works fine when we use a restore technology other than netinstall (ASR multicast, Disk Utility block copy, etc).
    Thanks,
    j

  • I need help on how to setup hardware raid for ASM.

In the « Recommendations for Storage Preparation” section in the following documentation: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b31107/asmprepare.htm
    It mentions:
--Use the storage array hardware RAID 1 mirroring protection when possible to reduce the mirroring overhead on the server.
Which is a good raid 1 configuration considering my machine setup?
“I put my Machine info below.”
Should I go for something like:
5 * raid 1 of 2 disks in each raid: disk group DATA
5 * raid 1 of 2 disks in each raid: disk group FRA
Then ASM will take care of all the striping between the 5 raids inside a disk group right?
    OR, I go for:
1 * raid 1 of 10 disks: disk group DATA
1 * raid 1 of 10 disks: disk group FRA
In the second configuration, does ASM recognize that there are 10 disks in my raid configuration and stripes on those disks? Or to use ASM striping, I need to have lots of raid in a disks group?
    Here is my Machine Characteristics:
O/s is Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.5 64 bit
Single instance on Enterprise Edition 10g r2
    200 GIG database size.
    High "oltp" environment.
Estimated growth of 60 to 80GIG per year
    50-70GIG archivelogs generation per Day
Flashback time is 24 hours: 120GIG of flashback space in avg
I keep a Local backup. Then push to another disk storage, then on tape.
    General Hardware Info:
    Dell PowerEdge 2950
    16 GIG RAM
    2 * 64 bit dual core CPU's
    6 * local 300G/15rpm disks
    Additional Storage:
    Dell PowerVault MD1000
    15 * 300G/15rpm Disks
So I have 21 Disks in total.

I would personally prefer the first configuration and let ASM stripe the disks. Generally speaking, many RAID controllers will stripe then mirror (0+1) when you tell it to build a striped and mirrored RAID set on 10 disks. Some will mirror then stripe (1+0) which is what most people prefer. That's because when a 1+0 configuration has a disk failure, only a single RAID 1 set needs to be resync'd. The other members of the stripe won't have to be resynchronized.
So, I'd prefer to have ASM manage 5 luns and let ASM stripe across those 5 luns in each disk group. It also increases your ability to reorganize your storage if you need 20% more info in DATA and can afford 20% less in FRA, you can move one of your RAID 1 luns from FRA to DATA easily.
    That's my 0.02.

  • FCP 5 unbelievably slow to compress video on Mac Pro hardware.

    Hi -
I am compressing some HD video to H.264 format on a Mac Pro...
The version # is 5.04 - Not the Universal version which I just discovered needs to be crossgraded to. But that is a different topic.
I have about 22 minutes of video which seems to take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours to compress to the MP4 format. The machine claims that 2.6 out of 4 processors worth of processing is going on... Perhaps this is just an artifact of the emulation of the PPC hardware/software... But - yuck.
I opened the process window for the Final Cut Pro Process and it showed a zillion faults.... And then I sampled the process and ended up with a thread listing as such...

  • Using Time Capsule with a multiuser configured Mac Mini running 10.8.6

I have an Admin user and 3 standard users in my Mac Mini.
If I get a Time Capsule or a Thunderbolt compatiable external hard drive and back up using Time Machine, will 'it' do the entire drive or just user specific data.
In other words do I have to set up the back up within each user and will the back up take place without user login?
    Thanks

TM is designed to backup the disk and all user info.. there is no need to have each user login and run TM.. but it might be best if the setup is the Admin user.
