Configuring mail to detect spam

Hello.. I am geting mail from two or three companies to  whom i have politely requested that they remoe my e mail address from their database .(fat chance)
i want to set my mail program to filter out mails from these two or three ( maybe more in future) e mail addresses.
i have tried to be diligent to see if the question has been asked before.
i found this
response on one
Choose Mail > Preferences, and then click Junk Mail.
Specify which actions Mail should perform when junk mail arrives.
When you want to verify what Mail is identifying as junk mail, select the “Mark as junk mail, but leave it in my Inbox” checkbox.
When you are sure the filter is accurately identifying junk mail, select the “Move it to the Junk mailbox” checkbox.
********** To set up other actions, select the “Perform custom actions” checkbox, and then click the Advanced button. In the pane that appears, click Add to add conditions and actions. To remove a condition or action, click Remove (-). Note: To use the junk mail database when identifying junk mail, make sure “Message is Junk Mail” is one of the conditions (it’s specified by default). Otherwise, Mail uses only the conditions listed to identify junk mail.
in this area, is there a place when i click perform custom actions and then click on advanced button and in the condition or action, add somehow, to place these e mail addresses on the junk database..
is there any other way to put specific e mail addresses in some kind of junk alert database for the mail program.

sorry, folks.. i am very dense when it comes to these things.
i found rules.. but it is in a different place in "preferences" from" junk."
maybe that does not matter.
but when , after clicking on "rules",
the 'rules pane comes up, and i see a + sign, do i click the plus sign and then
in the criteria, add the offending e mail address under 'contains'..
what if there is more than one e mail address which i want rules to deal with?  I guess i would click the plus + sign again and do each one seperately?
and 'move to trash' as "action taken".?
does this happen automatically every time mail receives a message which i have listed under rules action taken move to trash.?
This may seem like i am rather an idiot, but i find that i have to double check everything and not take anything for granted...when it comes to using computers.
thank you for your patience, y'all.
I will try Jeffreys trick also
i was so diligent in removing the offending trash when I received it, that i have to wait until tomorrow to try all of this.
but i wanted to get the complete instructions now.
i will mark that both answers helped me..thank you

  • What is CM Spam Detection: Spam in mail header?

My friends is using 10.7.3 Mac Mail.
She sends me a a file and I never get it.
Shes sends it again, and I get it.
In her email header, it has  this
    Mime-Version:
    1.0
    X-Mailer:
    Apple Mail (2.1257)
    Content-Type:
    text/plain; charset=us-ascii
    Content-Transfer-Encoding:
    7BIT
    Cm Spam Detection:
    spam
I know she is not spam. She has called her ISP (optonline) and they think its her end.
She is running latest Norton's for Mac and I wondered, is it labelling it on the way out?
Anyone else see this? Thanks... it will help keep her sanity (and mine)!

Her settings are correct per ISP (login, pass, smtp, incoming servers, authentication).
We are puzzled that she has a G5 with 10.4.11 and mail works fine, but the MacPro running 10.7 has same settings...but runs latest nortons.
    ISP confirmed settings (phone support).
Unless another computer in her house was spamming (son or husband's PC) and got listed?

  • After 1st Gen iPod touch reset, cannot configure mail for Mobile Me or iCloud account

I recently reset my iPod touch 1st Gen, v. 3.1.3 (7E18) and have not been able to configure Mail to check the Mobile Me or iCloud mail server.  I get an error msg that the user name or password must be incorrect, but they're not.  I assume this is due to the old IOS not being up to date with iCloud technologies, but I was able to get mail on this device before resetting.  I don't use it much for email, but do carry it on trips as a backup access device to get to mail and calendars.  I dont really want to use Safari to check mail when there is a mail app for doing so.
    Any suggestions?

  • Do I need to configure Open Directory before I configure mail?

I am doing a slow step-by-step configuration of a new 10.6.2 box and I am marginally skilled. Before I migrate a handful of accounts from the old server to the new, I want to make sure mail services work on the new server. Later I would like to try experimenting with Open Directory. Since I will be creating local user accounts on the server to configure mail, will these migrate to Open Directory later or will I need to reconfigure the accounts? If the latter is true, it suggests I should install Open Directory first.
(I apologize if this belongs in another discussion group.)

I have discovered that the answer is that I do not have to configure Open Directory first. Found this on the OD discussion area:

  • How to configure mail client to only download headers(titles) of emails

    Hi there?
I have 10 different email accounts (for some weird reasons that i think irrelevant fir this question), and i want to use Mail app as my main client. iCloud, hotmail, yahoo, gmail, other imap and pop etc.
Now the mail client is trying to download everything from the servers which is gigs of storgae space. I need to configure mail to only download titles of emails, not the entire email with attachments etc.
I can do that very simply in MS Outlook, and even in the old outlook express client.
How can i do that in Mavericks mail client please? I looked everywhere
    Thanks

Try going to the web based site and see if you can set up a temporary folder there. Move anything you don't want to download to that folder.

  • How to configure Mail Users aliases

    Hello,
i have installed OS X Lion Server and after after a short while i was very dissapointed.
One of my goals was to get a easy GUI to adminstrate my mail Server.
So, after installing Server App i configure and activate a Mail Server.
Then i wanted to add aliases to my User and tried to start The Workgroup Manager.
Within i searched for a the mail tab in order to configure the User Aliases.
But there was no Mail tab there, so i have to create the aliases through the command line (edit /etc/postfix/aliases, newaliases).
I cannot believe that there is no gui for configuring mail users. Is this really so or is it in another place or have i forgotten to check or to do something else.
How do you setting up and configure mail and mail users in OS X Lion?
I am looking forward to you answers and expiriences,
    Greetings,
    Peter

    @menzbua
You can configure mail aliases, the same way you did in Mac OS 10.6 Server... Make sure you have Installed Server Tools for 10.7. Run Workgroup Manager. Under the User, Select Short names on the 2nd or 3 line add [email protected] etc .etc

  • How to configure Mail to send from off-site

I am trying to configure Mail on a laptop that will send and receive email both went it is connected to the servers ISP (on site) and when the laptop is connected to a non-site ISP. In other words when I am in the office I am connected to the ISP that is hosting my mail server. When I am out of the office and using an ISP that is not hosting the mail server. I have configured Mail such that I can send and receive email when I am onsite. When I am offsite I can receive email but not send it. In order to fix the problem I have tried configuring the SMTP to require password authentication using a couple of different server ports (i.e. 25, 110 & 587) but have been unable to send from off site. At this point I am at a loss as what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the off-site ISP doesn’t let you send no matter what port you use, there is little, if anything, you can do about it. Many ISPs, however, only block port 25 for all traffic outside their own network. Something that usually works in those cases is changing the outgoing server port to 587 instead of 25 in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but the outgoing server in question must listen to that port for this change to work.
If the off-site ISP allows sending on port 587, but the outgoing server you want to use doesn’t listen to that port, you may solve the problem by using an independent authenticated SMTP server that allows sending from any mail account no matter where you are.
A Gmail account, for example, would allow you to do this. Instructions for setting up a Gmail account are provided here:
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275
After setting up the Gmail account in Mail and checking that it works, you can use Gmail's SMTP server to send from your other mail accounts as well:
    1. Log into your Gmail account on the web.
    2. Go to Settings > Accounts.
    3. Enable the addresses you want to be able to send from, and let Gmail validate them by verifying that you do indeed own them.
    4. For each mail account you want to send from using Gmail’s SMTP server, in Mail go to Preferences > Accounts, and choose Gmail’s SMTP server from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) popup menu.

  • How to configure Mail to use different ports for POP and SMTP?

I am trying to configure Mail for my AT&T account. It requires me to configure POP (incoming) mail for port 995, and SMTP (outgoing) mail for port 465. However there doesn't seem to be an option to configure different ports for these. Is that correct, or am I missing something?
Alternatively can I configure two accounts, one for POP incoming and one for SMTP outgoing? My incoming POP account does work, but in configuring an outgoing account I still have to configure a POP server name and that will not work for the outgoing port.
Any advice on how to solve this would be appreciated.

Understand. It is really quite easy to do in Mail, too. Kappy told you how to set up the smtp piece. I gave you pop info. These two things are on different panels within Account Preferences.
To recap his and my posts
    SMTP:
In Mail Prefs, click on the accounts icon. Click on your att yahoo account on the list. On the right of the window, in the lower portion, you see an smtp server menu. Open it and select edit. Select Edit Server, then click on its Advanced tab. Set up port 465 with SSL.
    POP:
This is on a different panel in Mail PRefs Accounts. Now in Mail Prefs, click on the accounts icon. Click on your att yahoo account on the list. On the right of the window, you see three tabs, acc't info, mbox behaviors, and Advanced. This is where things are different than for smtp. You are going to configure stuff on a different "advanced" panel than where you were for the smtp stuff. Click on the advanced tab. There is a field for port with a SSL checkbox next to it and an authentication drop down menu. Check the box and it should quickfill change from 110 to 995. Autentication drop down is probably already default to password.
Did you visit the URL I gave you previously? It even gives you screen shots.

  • How to configure mail server for subscription

    Hi,
I want to test subscription. My problem is how to configure the mail server.
As to my understanding, we need first configure mail server, then the user can choose "Subscribe" in the Details screen of a folder.
    My steps are:
    1. In KM - CM - Utilities - Channels, specify SMTP server, userId and password.
    2. In KM - CM - Utilities - Channel originators, set the Original address for notificator.EMAIL.
    3. In KM - Collaboration - Groupware Transport - Mail Transport, specify SMTP server and sent message folder.
After that, when I choose a user and click "Send email", it failed saying "Failed to communicate with SMTP server when sending the email.".
Could anyone tell me what's wrong with my configuration, or what should I do to make subscription work?
    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hi Vineeth,
    Thanks for help.
    According to your steps:
    1. set up a mail transport and making notification and mailing service active.
In System admin - KM - CM - Global services, I've enabled Inbox, Mailing and Notification services.
In KM - CM - Collaboration - Groupware Transport, I've set up a mail transport:
      Name: JavaMailTransport
      SMTP Server: smtp.yahoo.com
      Sent message folder: /documents
      System alias name: mytransport
    2. Give everyone read permission on notifications in KM.
Where can I set user's permission on notifications? I think you mean folder /etc/notifications, but I don't know how to set permissions.
    3. Check if proper id's are maintained in users profile.
      How to do this?
    Thanks for help~~
    Regards,
    Ray

    Hi Pankaj Sharma,
The suggestion above would be a good solution to you.  However, if you do not want to use this add-on, you may just configure SBO-Mailer to perform the task. You may check all available setting for the mailer and read through Administrator Guide for how to set it up.
    Thanks,

How to configure mail service in DRM 11.1.2.3.500.
There is a feature in Workflow Models to Notify users by sending mail.
Can anyone help me find from where to configure mail service.

    Hi,
If you open up the Configuration Console on the DRM Server you should be able to navigate to the second tab called "Host Machines".
From there, select SMTP Server - and enter the details for your SMTP server. You've now configured DRM to send emails... now you just need to add it into your workflows...
