Configuring my new router!!!???

So i just bought a new router at wally world (walmart..). I am in a dorm room right now, and i wanted to get a router to get some wifi going on here, because of course the campus wifi doesn't reach my room.... so anyways, i got this router to solve that. I know my campus registers MAC addresses when we arrived here, so i know i need to clone my MAC address from my laptop to my router. And i'm trying to do this... but i can't...
first of all, i can't even install the CD, because the network here wont let my router connect...
second, i'm not sure how to change the MAC address on my router, because i don't know how to change the settings on it without first being on a network..
Is there any way i can change the MAC address without being connected to a network? Like hooking it up to my laptop and chaning the settings that way?
I know this might sound and look confusing, so ask any questions of you need!!!
Thank you

I am not familiar with the 160 GUI, but you should be able to look through it and find a page that allows you to clone a MAC address. It's probably on a sub-tab under the Setup tab.
There will be either an entry field to manually enter a MAC address or a button the will clone the address from the PC you are currently connected from. Whichever you try, the cloned address should be the same as the one the scholl has registered.
If this is in a dorm environment, you will ABSOLUTELY want to change the admin password for the router, change the SSID from the default and set up wirelss authentication (use WPA or WPA2, not WEP). You might consider disabling admin access for wireless clients also, so that you have to connect the ethernet cable if you want to make any config changes in the future.

  • Can't browse network with new router - HELP!

My old WRT54G died a few days ago.  I replaced it with a WRT54GL which was the closest match.  Since installing the new router I can no longer browse my network.   I configured the new router with LELA as per the instructions suggested.  Could that have changed something?  All the machines can get on the internet and I can ping all the machines through the command line but when I try to look at the workgroup in the my network places window I get an error message that says:
"Workgroup not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  The network path was not found."
When I run the net view command in the command line that also results in an error.
When I hook machines together with a crossover cable everything works fine so I have to assume it's some setting in the new router that is preventing the browse list from working.  Here's what I've tried:
Turned off firewalls both on the local machines and on the router - made no difference
Made sure all machines are in the same workgroup - they are
Made sure browser service and the peer networking services are running - they are
Made sure all machines are on the same subnet - they are because they can ping each other
Now here's something really strange.  When I rename the workgroup on all machines they can see each other.  Once I switch back to the name "workgroup" they can't see each other any longer and I get the error message.
I run a small business and need to share files quite often.  I would love to be able to get a NAS server but I can't find any that will work with ALL of my machines.  Most of my machines are running Vista at this point but a few are still XP Pro. One of my machines is XP Pro and cannot run SP2 which prevents a lot of newer software and devices from running on it.  This is why I really need to get my file sharing ability back.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I solved the issue and wanted to post it in case someone else has the same issue.  One of the machines uses a Linksys WGA600N Dual Band Gaming adapter as it's wireless adapter. Technically speaking this actually a bridge.  I needed to restart it.  That solved my issue.

  • Help Needed - Connecting a new Router

    Hi,
I have just bought an asus rt-ac68u router to replace my old BT home hub 3. I have connected it to the existing BT openreach modem
I have configured the new router. The WAN settings are PPoE. The router is showing as connected to the Internet.
However the problem is my computer shows the network is not connecting to the Internet despite the router saying it is connected. When I run a windows network diagnostics test it says there may be a problem with your Domain Name Server configuration
Has anybody got any ideas what I have done wrong. I've left the dns field to set themselves automatically.
Appreciate any help you can give. I don't know much about networks, the instructions made it look like it would be pretty much plug and play
    Thanks

I don't have this router but going by the instructions here
    http://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/RTAC68U/HelpDesk_Manual/
it should be fairly straight forward to set up. All the setting should be populated automatically when you connect with the exception of the setting I gave you.
If you have changed or put in any settings other than the PPPoE and account name etc I gave you I would carry out a factory reset of the router and start again following the instructions to the letter.
Make sure you are connecting by Ethernet before trying to connect by wireless.

  • Configuring a printer to a new router

I just recently got a new router supplied through my service provider. I have a wireless HP Deskjet3050A printer. and since getting the new router i cant print. It says that everything is good and ready to print but it doesnt do anything when I click the print button. I think the printer needs to be configured to the router which I have no idea how to do. Also, I cant use the CD that came with my printer as I just got a new computer and it is a Windows 8.1 operating system. My old one was Windows Vista. Any and all help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I did post my test early this year and sometimes around Christmas 2012. I used 3 different routers and a dozen of Windows machines (sorry I don't own any Apple product but from time to time I use my kids Apple devices to test when they come home on weekends).
The quick and easy way is to run setup from a computer which is connected to the network. The printer will use information such as SSID, security key ... from computer(s) and reconnect to new router.
    Hope this helps.

  • Will a new router increase my broadband speed in this configuration

How much (if at all) can I increase my broadband speed by getting a faster router. Here's my config:
DSL line --> DSL modem --> Lynksys BEFSR41 Router --> Ethernet cat-5 wiring in house --> TimeCapsule WiFi
The computers using this network are an Intel iMac (10.6), a PowerPC iMac (10.4), and two Intel MacBooks (10.6).
The modem/router are located in an in-wall distribution box in a utility room. I want to keep the hardwired ethernet available in case the WiFi quits temporarily. The TimeCapsule is in a good location (top shelf bookcase on first floor) for coverage of my 2-story house. In principle could eliminate the Lynksys modem, and use the TC as the primary router, but it would be difficult to physical locate the TC where it could both distribute to the house ethernet and have good radio reception.
Testing via the hardwire ethernet (using Speakeasy and speedtest.net) shows download and upload speed 1.27Mbps and 0.32Mb/s. My ISP is pacbell.net. I get the same result via my W-Fi. Speedtest.net tells me my result is about 40% of the average for pacbell.net to my zip code 94301.
I've heard there are much faster routers than the BEFSR41, but I don't know if my internet speed is limited by my current router or by pacbell's DSL service.
    Any insights would be appreciated.

Will a new router increase my broadband speed
No...your speed is only going to be as fast as your weekest link, which in your case is the DSL modem and the connection speed package you subsribe to.

  • New router: cp1525nw wifi install fails with vague error message

    Product:  HP Laserjet Pro cp1525nw
    OS:  WIndows 8.1
    Hardware:  Asus laptop
Recently received new router from Verizon (FIOS), model FQG1100 BHR4 Router
    Purchased printer in 2012.
Printer was working with old router; it won't communicate with new router.
Over four days I have repeatedly removed the printer from the laptop and tried reinstalling using the wifi method. The install instructions say to run the CD, choose wifi, connect the USB cable when prompted, configure, remove cable when prompted.
When I attach the USB cable the configuration starts, but it either times out ("taking too long") or fails with vague message  about not finding the product. I am never prompted for an SSID.
I tried a USB install and that worked; so the USB cable is good.
Windows File & Print Sharing is enabled.
I've tried re-setting the printer to defaults, and ensured the wifi menu says "ON" for wifi.
I ran a wireless network test report:
PASS for wireless on, wireless working, and Security.
FAIL for Network Name (SSID) Found.
NOT RUN for: printer settings consistant with wireless router settings, No filtering, connected, signal strength, other networks detected.
    Wireless netwrorks detected: 9
I note the router label does not statE "SSID", but says "ESSID".
I would appreciate any ideas for what to try.

Last night I finally got it to work.  I removed the printer fully from the PC and rebooted. I turned off the printer. I ran a cable to the router (cable modem). I reset the router, which then assigned an IP address to the printer. I changed the security settings on the router to use WEP instead of WPA. I ran the HP printer setup program---and it finally presented me with the "provide SSID" screen.  The program ran successully. I printed a test page. I changed the router secuirty back to WPA2. I printed another test page.     I tried rebooting everything and printed again.  I also tried removing the cable and then printing again---the printing failed.
In short, I needed to do two things:  connect a cable and change the router temporarily to WEP for the install.
In my case, my printer is close enough to the router to run the cable.  A little disappointing that the true wireless won't work, but I can print wirelessly from my laptop.
I've seen how a lot of people have had the same issue I had, and how HP is of no help in solving this issue.  I'm convinced the printer has a flaw.  I hope my posts will be of benefit to a few people having the same issue.

  • LaserJet Pro CP1525nw cannot connect to new router (Home Hub 2000)

In December, we replaced everything EXCEPT our LaserJet Pro CP1525nw colour printer - new laptop (Dell Inspirion 15), new operating system (Windows 8.1 - 64 bit), new internet provider (Bell) and new wireless router (Home Hub 2000).
Immediately, we were unable to connect to the router. We tried all of the suggestions, including connecting the printer directly to the router - which worked, until we disconnected it and then they could not communicate again.
At the time, the only solution we could find was to connect our printer and laptop via USB cable and print that way - no more wireless printing, so unable to print from phones and iPad, but at least we could print from the laptop.
In the past month, we have become unable to use many of the features on our printer - when we try to select print options, we get the message "HPMSN103.dll has stopped working." So, we can still print, but cannot select options.
We have tried using the CD that came with the printer, and it gets to a certain point and then a fatal error occurs. We have tried downloading the "full solution" printer install program from the HP website, and the same thing happens. We have tried skipping that and just choosing the appropriate printer driver in Windows: if we only use that driver, we get a printer that shows up, but we cannot print if we select it (interestingly, though, we can actually access the printer options!); if we say we have the disc, then we get two printers showing up - we can select print options on the one that will not allow us to print, but not on the one that actually prints. If we try removing one of the printers, they both uninstall and we're back to square one.
So, we WANT to be able to get back to printing wirelessly - after all, we paid (handsomely) for a wireless printer! And we still cannot get our printer and the router to recognize each other. Can somebody help? We don't want to have to buy another printer.
    Thanks!

    Hi @Capers2 ,
I see that you are experiencing issues setting up the printer on the new router. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Thank you for providing that detailed information.
If the network name has any spaces or special characters, the printer may not recognize it.
The printer is only capable of sending/receiving in the 2.4 ghz band.
If it is set to 5 GHZ network you may need to change to 2.4 ghz. (rename the 5 ghz or shut it off)
The WPA key setting needs to be on AES to work correctly not TKIP.
Multi casting needs to be turned on.
Firewall on router has to have open ports for printer.
If you have Mac Filtering you need to give printer hardware address from Configuration page.
You might need to contact your router company for further assistance to check those settings.
I would reset the printer first to clear out any previous network settings.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.
Print out a configuration report and make sure the SSID and IP address are cleared.
    Printing a Configuration Page.
The easiest way to setup the printer back on the wireless network is through a Ethernet connection and then switch over to wireless.
    Disconnect the USB cable.
Remove any printer software by following these steps:
Go into Devices and Printers , click file then Server Properties, click on the Drivers tab at the top of print Server Properties window. Choose the printer you want to uninstall and click remove. Choose remove driver and package. Any that say Universal PCL 5 or Universal PCL 6 also remove and the Laserjet CP1525nw.
The next screen will give a warning, letting you know that deleting the driver package will remove it from the system. Click yes to say that you are sure you want to do this. (if the printer isn't listed that is OK)
Right click and delete any entries for the Laserjet in the Devices and Printers Window.
Run the uninstall from the CD.
Press the Windows key and the X key together. and select File Explorer, right click the CD for the
printer and left click open in new window.
Connect the printer to the router with a Ethernet cable.
Wait about 1 minute and the printer should have a valid IP address.
Print the configuration page to get the printer's IP address to configure the Wireless.
Type the IP address in Internet explorer's address bar which should open the printer's embedded web services page.
Setup the wireless through here now.
Click on the networking tab, wireless on the left, fill out the network information and apply the settings.
After the confirmation, then disconnect the Ethernet cable.
Now you should have a blue wireless light on the printer in about 1 minute.
Perform a clean boot on the computer and turn off the Antivirus Software. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
    Run the installation again.
If you are prompted to connect the USB cable during the installation, Then immediately after connecting the USB cable, follow the steps in this document to update the drivers so it doesn't error out. A Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation. Then the installation should continue.
    Test the printer.
If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!

  • New router WRT160N, but still same poor signal!!

    Hi all,
Been having issues with my wireless signal being poor and/or intermitent.  I won't pretend to be computer literate, but I asked a Techie friend about this, and he suggested that I but a new router with the "N" signal.
My desktop signal is fine, but i have 3 laptops, and can be 30 feet away and get a fair/poor signal.  When I go into the bedroom, which is upstairs, and in the furthest distance away from the router, the signal gets even weaker.
My Techie tried everything to bump up the signal, trying all channels, and even moved the router around the room.  No luck!!
My house isn't made of steel, so there is no logical explanation for this... is there?
Please  help me, and remember...I'm not real swarthy with the computer jargon,
    thanks very much

Try to change the Wireless Settings on your Router as mentioned below, i think it will improve the wireless signal strength on your computers.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Got new router, now powerbook G3 pismo wont connect to it.

asked cable company to replace router as i was paying for 60 meg connection but due to moving my router to connect to my dreambox i realised that the router only had 802.11g wifi and so my computer wasnt able to connect fast enough to use the connection. when watching football or downloading big files i ran an ethernet cable across the room which wasnt ideal.
they replaced it with a new router capable of 802.11n today an rewired the cabling so both my mac and dreambox have ethernet connections.
when they were here i went to test it with wifes powerbook but battery was dead so i tested with my palm tx and it connected fine..
    however...
wifes powerbook gives an error and wont connect. part of me thinks its due to the powerbook being 802.11b and the router not handling that, but my palm tx is 802.11b so thats not a reason surely? checked and psp, wii, nokia phone all connect but powerbook gives error.
if it is, can i just stick a pc usb 802.11g or n stick into the powerbook's usb (1) slot and make it connect?

Are you certain you connected all the way to the Internet with your palm, and not just to the Router?
    cable company
The cable company has to perform a "deep reset" to allow you to use a new device with a new M.A.C. Address. Your connection was established with an older M.A.C. Address, and that (your old Router) is the only device that can be connected until they do this.
Call them and tell them, "I got a new computer, and you guys have to reset your equipment to accept the new device in place of the old one."
almost every 802.11n Router has a mode that will allow it to pause for an instant and "sniff" for slower devices. It slows your network down by an imperceptible amount. Not an issue in home networks. But you may have to configure it to do so.

  • Network Errors Adding New Router

    Hello,
I posted this in the iChat forum earlier today but I think this would a better forum to ask this question. We were using a D-Link DI-604 Wired Router for about 5 years until yesterday when we purchased a new D-Link EBR-2310 Wired Router. Ever since connecting the new router, about every 15 to 30 minutes in the console log on my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, I get the following errors now:
    Jun 12 17:31:57 <computer name> kernel[0]: AppleYukon2: 00000001,00000000 sk98nif - deadmanCheck - nothing received, resetting chip

This never happened with the old router and I can't figure out what is causing this (I keep a close watch on my console log and I know for sure that this problem just started since connecting the new router). The new router is cascaded to an older Farallon 10Mbps ethernet hub (exactly the same way the old router was set up) so at first, I thought the errors may have been due to the fact that I had the WAN Port Speed of the new router set to "Auto 10/100Mbps" causing my iMac to (unsuccessfully) try to negotiate a faster port speed. On the old router, we had the WAN Port Speed set to 10Mbps and I never noticed any of these errors so I changed the WAN Port Speed on the new router to 10Mbps instead of "Auto 10/100Mbps" and we're still getting the same thing happening.
I've tried connecting my iMac directly to the router and directly to the cascaded Farallon 10Mbps ethernet hub and either way, it makes no difference. Our internet connection works fine but we get the odd error when sending a print job to our networked HP LaserJet with the new router. Does anyone with any networking experience have any idea what can be causing this? Is there a way to change the 10/100Mbps speed on the iMac itself rather than on the router?
    Thanks so much,
    Gerard

Is there a way to change the 10/100Mbps speed on the iMac itself rather than on the router?
    System Preferences/Network/Advanced/Ethernet - Configure manually
The book on this router at Newegg is that it works for some people, but others using Vista notice the router can't handle multiple users very well. Disconnects, slow throughput, resets. It's not a very costly router, and hasn't had a firmware update since 2007. Maybe Vista pushes it too hard?
I'm just guessing that the deadmanCheck reference in the error is some sort of test to see if anybody is there and when the router doesn't respond, the Mac reset's it's ethernet chips.
Since you've had so many problems with the programs, firewall and port routing, and incomprehensible tech support, you might look at one of the competitors products that can keep up with your equipment.

  • Control panel screen does not respond so I cannot set up new router

The printer recognises the new router and I can select it on the touch screen. But I cannot get any further. Several screen prompts do not work on touch screen: I cannot enter new router password in set up wizard or press start before pressing WPSbutton on router.

I apologize if I overlooked your first post. Base on your first pot, you were saying that you can get online wired, right? Here are the things you can do: 1. In accessing the setup page of the router, make sure the firewall on the computer is off. Turn off everything. Be it an anti-virus or a firewall. 2. Reset the router for 30 seconds. Make sure the power light of the router is blinking when you press the reset button. That is the indicator that the reset is properly press. Then power cycle the router and the modem. 3. After that, check if you can ping the IP address of the router: 192.168.1.1 (default). If so, try to access the page. Username: blank Password:admin. 4. You should be able to access the page, if not (incomplete page), adjust the security level of the browser or you can use another browser to isolate the problem. If the problem is still there, try to access the router using a different computer to isolate further. 5. Considering you are able to access the setup page of the router with no problem now, go to the status tab and check your internet IP. In doing that, we will be able to determined if the router is acting just a passthru or the other way around. 6. Then go to the wireless tab, configure the SSID (change the default one, change the channel to 11 then save. 7. Go to wireless security sub tab and enable the wireless security (WPA). Save all the settings and try to connect your wireless computer. If you are using a built-in wireless card, make sure all updates are installed on the PC, drivers and WPA patches. Try to connect using WZC... Hope it works!

  • I need a new router for my MacBook Pro, OS 10.9.3

Need a new router for OS 10.9.3 and found that Linksys E2500 is not compatible. Any suggestions for a moderately priced router that will work for a 2300 square foot home and patio? Thanks!

It depends on what your idea of moderately priced is... however, I would go with the 6th generation Apple AirPort Extreme -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/ME918LL/A/airport-extreme?fnode=4d.
It's a joy of a router and so simple to configure with the AirPort Utility. Unlike some routers, where the setup takes a network genius to configure and maintain, you can access all the settings you need through the utility. I've had dozens of routers in my lifetime but the 6th generation AirPort Extreme beats them all, hands down, and is well worth the extra money that it may cost. It's also 'future-proof,' so if you buy a machine that utilizes 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology, you'll be set.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

  • Need help choosing a new router (business use)

Here is what I have: Windows XP Pro Workstation (Wired) Server running Windows 2000 Server (Wired) Server running Linux (Wired) Windows XP Pro Laptop (Wireless) Playstation 3 (Wireless) I plan on creating a VPN connection to my network using Microsoft's VPN (Routing and Remote Access component to be specific); however, I currently have a 3 year-old Linksys Wireless-G Router w/Speedbooster (WRT54GS) that does not allow incoming VPN Connections. I have confirmed all the settings are correct on my end and the router will not cooperate. I would like to get a new router that will allow incoming VPN Connections and provide wireless to my wireless equipment. I DO NOT want to use 3rd party VPN software. Your recommendations are much appreciated.

It is unclear to me what kind of VPN connection you want to make exactly. Do you want to have a VPN connection from a computer in the internet using Microsoft's VPN client (i.e. PPTP or L2TP) to a server inside your LAN which is running the VPN server? What protocol do you want to use?
This should work through the WRT you have already. What hardware version do you have? Check the label underneath the router. Check for firmware upgrades for your router on the linksys technical support pages.
What port forwardings did you configure for the VPN tunnel?
Some people reported that the pass-through settings in the router were reversed: not setting the pass-through option actually allow traffic.
I don't think that a new router will necessarily solve your problems.
If you still want to upgrade, I would not necessarily look for a full replacement of the WRT. The WRTs (older and newer) bundle many functions inside a single box which make it versatile to use but on the other hand also has it downsides when one function influences some other for instance.
You can easily turn your old WRT into an access point for your LAN. If you want to buy a new router I would rather look into a wired router maybe even considering one with a VPN server built-in. Then you can establish the tunnel to the VPN router instead of a server inside your LAN. But you have to check the VPN routers carefully if they really support the client you want to use for the connection. Some are limited.
