Configuring old airport express with mountain lion

I have a new 2nd Gen airport express base station and would like to configure my old airport express to extend my network to hook up to the stereo in my living room. I run Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro, and it says the software I need is Airport Utility 5.6 to do this. I downloaded 5.6 for Lion, but it says I can't even install it to my HD. Is there a version for Mountain Lion?
If not, is there a way to configure?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

    From Cult of Mac:
"It’s simple: the secret sauce that Apple requires to make AirPlay Mirroring work is on-GPU H.264 encoding, or the ability to compress video on your device’s actual graphic chips without calling upon the CPU.
It’s not just Macs that can’t use AirPlay Mirroring if they are older than 2011: even on the iOS side of things, you need a minimum of an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 to use AirPlay Mirroring on your Apple TV. Why? Because older iOS devices don’t have on-GPU H.264 encoding either."
I am not sure how this doesn't "make scence."  To be honest, I don't necessarily disagree with the two of you - Apple should have been more transparent in their release notes when specifying which computers are capable of AirPlay mirroring with Mountain Lion.  I guess I felt like I got burned by Apple back in 2005 when I bought an iPod Nano right after they released it and then they had the "One More Thing" unveiling of the new color iPod that played video, which I would have bought instead.  I realized at that point that it wasn't really going to be feasible to have all the "latest and greatest" of Apple's products without constantly breaking the bank.

  • Can't configure old Airport express

    Hi There,
I can't configure an Airport Express because Airport Utility was upgraded. I've found several posts on how to get around this but in each case, the software or automator script download links are either broken or the software/script no longer works.
I already own 4x Apple Wireless devices and am not interested in owning another one!
Is there a way to configure this device on a newer mac (10.7.5)?
    Cheers
    Ben

You must install the older utility.
Try this one and tell us which thing doesn't work.. later versions of lion use the same method as Mountain Lion.. Apple actually blocked it from working.. amazing people!!
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Airport Utility 5.6 for older Airport Express on Mountain Lion?

Yesterday, I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion.  I was having some issues anyways, so I did a clean install.  I'm now restoring my files, and reinstalling my applications.  I went to the Airport Utility to configure my Airport Express (I wanted to also set up wireless printing now), but as I already knew, the latest version of the Airport Utility doesn't support my Airport Express's (I have 2).  When I select it, it says to download Aiport Utility 5.6.  So, I did.  However, the installer tells me that my version of operating system isn't supported, so it terminated on me.
Does anyone know what I can do to manage me Airport Express's?  I don't want to spend the money to get new ones because they work just fine (I extend the WiFi for my iPhone to get better signal outside, so 802.11N isn't going to help me there anyways).
    I appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

As an alternative to Pacifist, you may use two command-line utilities built in OS X: pkgutil to "unflatten" the flat package, and ditto to extract the Payload file inside it.
Assuming AirPortUtility56.dmg mounts to a volume AirPortUtility containing the flat package AirPortUtility56.pkg, then
    cd ~/Desktop
    pkgutil --expand /Volumes/AirPortUtility/AirPortUtility56.pkg AirPortUtility56
will unflatten the package into a folder AirPortUtility56 say on the Desktop. And
    ditto -x AirPortUtility56/AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg/Payload Payload
wil extract the Payload file inside into a folder Payload say also on the Desktop.
AirPort Utility 5.6.app is there inside Payload/Applications/Utilities.

  • Using old Airport Express with new Airport Extreme to stream music

I recently purchased the newest Airport Extreme to replace my older Airport Express. I'm running OS 10.8.5. I like the speed of the new WIFI signal for streaming to Apple TV. No long waits or buffering interruptions while watching movies. I still want to use the old Airport Express to stream music from my iPhone to a stereo in another part of the house. I plugged in the Express module and it just flashes amber. Doesn't show up in Airport Utility either.

I suggest that you first perform a "factory default" reset on your old AirPort Express, and then, check out the following Apple Support article for configuring it for streaming.

  • Set up airport express in mountain lion

how do i set up my airport express in OS X Mountain Lion?
apparently the software is not compatible and I can't seem to find the answer on the internet

Your question doesn't sound quite right....
Do you want to setup your Airport Express router? If so, then open up the application called Airport Utility to setup. Both Airport Utility versions (5.6 and 6.1) will work with your Mac... just be sure you select the Airport Express as your Wifi device in Network preferences. It will then pop up in your Airport Utility app.
Or do you want to setup Airport on your Mac? If so, then navigate to Apple/ System Preferences/Network and click on Wifi to set it up.

  • Old airport not support mountain lion

After upgrade to mountain lion, my old airport could not be used any more because it is supported by airport tools 5.6.1 only. does it mean I should scrap the old one and buy new one?

AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will run on Mountain Lion, but you will need to use a workaround to install it.
See this article for more details:

  • How can i use my old airport express with my new imac and wireless hp print

i just bought my first imac (intel) and a wireless hp printer. i now realize that a wireless connection between my imac and my printer needs a router.
i have an airport express base station, which is a few years old. I can't find my documentation, so i don't know its specifications.
how can i find out the specs of the airport express i have and whether i can use it now? it says that it is model a1084 100-240v~ 0.2a 50-60 hz.
does that tell any knowledgeable people out there about the specs? can i search the apple website by serial number and find the specs?

  • How to carbon copy an old hard disk with mountain lion on MBP-retina's SSD

Well the title says it all.
My idea is: Thunderbolt externally my old HDD and boot from it with target disk mode. Here's the first question: shall I first boot normally to initialize the OSX on the new MBPR or it doesn't matter since I am going to overwrite the whole SSD later?
So yeah, let's say i booted using thunderbolt on with my externalized old HDD. Can I use Carbon copy cloner to copy everything exactly to the MBP-retina's SSD?
Are there any risks in this procedure?
    Is it possible even?
Any better and/or tested strategy to do the same thing?
There must be a better way to transfer not only your user files and apps (see migration assistant), but also all drivers, system mods, 3rd-party system preference panes, etc.
    Thanks

This is the closest thing to my query that I have been able to find. I recently installed ML on my late 2011 MBP. I have tons of backups from Lion and I want to continue backing up ML. I have hesitated to do so as I fear that I will not be able to recover my data and settings in the event that I decide to downgrade to Lion. If I was to downgrade back doe Lion; could I use a ML TM backup to recover my files and settings?

  • I have an old Airport Express. How do I get Airport Utility to recognise it?

I have an OLd style Airport Express that I was using with my 2007 iMac and Tiger. Recent upgrade to Mountain Lion.
How do I get the Airport Utility to recognise it so I can set extra stuff?
    AndrewH66

Here are the AirPort Utility downloads:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#airport
Bottom line: I don't believe it's possible to use your old AirPort Express with Mountain Lion.  The current AirPort Utility is 6.3.1.
I'm assuming you have this one (from around 2004):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP76
If instead you have this one (from arount 2008):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP1
... then AirPort Utility may well support your device.

  • Old Airport Express how to use with my Yosemite mac computer?

old AirPort Utility 5.6.is not working with  yosemite
i can't use anymore with my old apple airport express? i can;t configure ...
    is there is

Yosemite, and other recent operating systems do not support the older AirPorts.
Listed in order of preference with the third option not recommended for most users, and the fourth option not recommended at all.
    1) Use...or borrow for a few minutes....a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.
    2) Replace the 8+ year old AirPort Express with a new version
    3) Use Boot Camp on your Mac to install Windows, then download and install AirPort Utility for Windows.
    4) Download unsupported software from the Internet from an unknown source, which requires that you change default security settings on your Mac.

  • Do I need an ethernet switch or new router for IP camera setup with old Airport Express

    Hello,
I am trying to setup a third party Foscam IP camera to my network so that I can ultimately use it as a baby monitor, and am having some difficulty.  I currently still have an old Airport Express (with one ethernet port only).  This is preventing me from setting up the initial camera because I don't have another ethernet port to plug it in to on the router.  I am wondering if I can just buy an ethernet switch and have it "split" the ethernet from my modem to both the camera and the Airport (I do need to check with my ISP provider if they give me two separate IP address... but if they do, would this work?).
I am fairly sure however, that my ISP provider (comcast) only provides one IP for my account.  Does this mean I would have to buy a new router altogether with more than one ethernet port on it or one with a WAN port?  Would I, in this case, have to plug the modem into the WAN port on the router, and then the camera to one of the ethernet ports on the router?
I consider myself fairly tech savy, but when it comes to routers, IPs, LAN, WAN, etc. I get a bit lost.  This has been creating quite a headache for me and any help would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but this won't work as the modem expects only a single device ... either a computer or a router to be connected to it. Unless your modem is actually a combination modem & router or gateway device, then you would need a different router to solve your networking problem.

  • Need to configure older airport express

I had an airport express unused in years just found. I am running Lion on mac laptop. I factory reset the express and try to configure with wifi setup
because Airport utility coul dnot see it
    I got this mssage
This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
When I download 5.6.1 its not compatible with lion and won't install
    Is there any hope ?
A way to update the express
I looked to use the current airport utility and use configure other by the IP addres the unit gets from my linsys router
Configure other has field for IP address and password
I know the IP addres but what would be the password after factory defaults reset? Would it even work if I knew the password?
    Please advise how to resolve

Found this item and used as described installed just as "replace"
When I opened the airport utility I did not do the request update
saw my old aiport express base station immediately and configured it to join the netowrk.
    Worked with no issues
    done.

Used Pacifist to install just the /Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility v5.6, and not update or overwrite anything else it offered to install.
It now works in Mountain Lion.
    Thanks.

  • Can not connect to old airport express

I can not connect to old airport express with new mountian lion and airport utility?

You will need to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.  This article will tell you how:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1167965/mountain_lion_and_the_ancient_airport_ba se_station.html
This works for most users, but we cannot guarantee that it will work for you. Up to you to decide if you want to try this unsupported method.
