Configuring Solaris 10 NICs in a VLAN?

Hello
Let's assume the scenario: VLAN 100 with subnet 10.1.100.0/24 is reserved by Solaris servers only.
Lets take an arbitrary server that has an interface bge0.
This server's NIC should have IP 10.1.100.10 / 24
Should I configure the NIC with the following:
ifconfig bge0 plumb 10.1.100.10 + netmask 255.255.255.0 up
or with the following
ifconfig bge100000 plumb 10.1.100.10 + netmask 255.255.255.0 up
Generally speaking, if a NIC must participate in a VLAN, must it be configured to be VLAN aware?
If the VLAN is configured only in the switch, wouldn't that be enough?

It depends on how the VLAN is presented.
The simplest method for the host is to have the network administrator assign a single VLAN to a switch port. There's no host-side configuration necessary to use the VLAN.
Another method is that you can present multiple VLANs on a port using 802.1q addressing. That's what you're asking about with the syntax. It allows the card to associate itself with one of multiple VLANs on the link.
If the card/server/configuration are not 802.1q aware, then they can only talk to VLAN0 on the link. If that's the correct VLAN, then yes that is enough.

  • How to configure Solaris 10 IPMP for Oracle VDI 3.3.2

    Hi,
Does anyone have an indication on how to configure Solaris 10 IPMP in a manner that supports Oracle VDI?
We have setup two servers with 2 test addresses on physical and 1 logical for the hostname of the box, but when we configure VDI the VDI database does not come up on the 2nd box. We have also tried configuring IPMP without test addresses, but it doesn't make any difference - the DB still doesn't go into the up state after configuration on the 2nd server.
    Solaris 10 u9 with patches
Two physical NICs on management VLAN via 2 switches
Two physical NIcs on VDI VLAN via 2 switches
    VDI 3.3.2
All hostnames are in DNS and resolve for short name, FQDN and also reverse IP lookup
The is a proposal pdf on Oracle website that mentions IPMP, so someone has done it. Just could do with a hint on how it was done so that it works.
    Thanks
    Paul

OK, updating this with what was causing the issue.
Not an IPMP problem this was a DNS problem. The VDI servers have access to two DNS environments, so had a DNS search path that had the domain where the VMs where going to go and another for management of the box with two DNS servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf.
We configured VDI using the FQDN for the management DNS, however the vda-config script takes the hostname of the box adds the first DNS domain from /etc/resolv.conf search entry and configures using (it seams to ignore what you put into the vda-config). When the config script comes to configuring MySQL because the names didn't match (FQDN it created by adding hostname to the 1st entry in DNS search path & FQDN that you put into vda-config command), it decides that it is configuring a "Client MySQL" instance rather than a "Slave MySQL" instance, which means the VDA DB never comes up in the out of vda-center status.
    So the fix is to:
    1) configure IPMP without test addresses (so traffic comes out of the correct IP and can be reverse looked up in DNS by the other host)
    2) if you have multiple DNS search entries, configure VDI using the first entry in your search path as its FQDN

Nowhere do I see what the contents of /etc/hostname.e1000g0 are. What is in that file?
And I really don't understand why e1000g0 would ever have a loopback address like 127.0.0.1. There's lots of reasons why it might not get any address, but a loopback is confusing.

  • Configure Solaris cluster to failover guest domain when NICs were down

    Hi,
I am running Solaris 11 as the control domains on 2 clustered nodes running on Solaris Cluster 4. There is a Solaris 10 guest domain which is managed via the Solaris cluster in failover mode.
2 virtual switches connected to 2 different network switches are presented to the guest domain. I would like to use link based IPMP to facilitate HA for the network connections. I understand that in this case the IPMP can only be configured within the guest domain. Now the question is how do I configure it in such a way that the guest domain fails over to the second cluster node (standby control domain) if both network interfaces are down? Thanks.

  • Solaris 10 NIC, what do you use?

Well my previous post http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5258945 yeilded no comments other than a link to the approved hardware list http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/, thank you SolarisSAinPA for that little bit of info, but I am sill left with a NIC problem: anything that I can find for sale is either 300+ dollars or "repeported to work"--so my original question:
"Could anyone, or everyone, please chime in with what NIC's they have on their Solaris 10 x86 installs that work great for them, I'd prefer 1 Gb ethernet but 100Mb would be fine too"
I have a list of 6 that are reported to work that are in the less than 100 dollar bracket, but all are "reported to work", others would be well appreciated too:
    D-Link DFE-530TX
    DFE-550TX
    NetGear FA 311
    GA 311 (Gigabit)
    3Com 3C905C
Realtek 8201CL PHY (on board 10/100 not supported)
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Well thank you all those of you that replied to my posts concerning a NIC for Solaris 10.
I am writing this using my new native Solaris 10 home system now and it is working marvelously.
I settled on the NetGear GA311 (1Gb) ethernet card (about 30 bucks at Staples), eventhough it was listed in the AHL as "reported to work". It works natively with the current build of Solaris 10 and couples to my NetGear 1Gb router at the rated 1Gb max speed--VERY VERY FAST!!!
I just did a sys-unconfig and when the machine rebooted it instantly recognised the NIC and configured it to 1Gb.
If you are looking to run Solaris 10 Native, I recomend the GA311, it's working great for me!

  • Solaris Beginner NIC Questions...

I have been kicking around installing Solaris for a while, and i finally did it. Everything looks great and is working fine, except for my network card. I've done some research, and I am pretty sure I need to install the Tulip drivers for it, but being new to Solaris, I don't even know where to begin.
My network card is a CNet PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Card with a Davicom DM9102 chipset. This was listed as compatable with the Tulip drivers, so i downloaded the Tulip drivers, popped them on a CD, and now have them on the desktop of my Solaris machine. I looked at the readme, but am still confused as to what exactly I need to do to install the driver and configure it with my network card.
Any help would be greatly appriciated. I love what I've heard about Solaris, and I am anxious to get it online to really see what it can do.
Also, on a similar note, after installation, I had the network connection lo0 set to 127.0.0.1 . I assume that lo0 is just a loopback when no network card is detected? Or is this what needs to be configured? Thanks again.

Do the Solaris dnet drivers work?
According to http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/devicelist/ they should work out of the box.
You should can check with a ifconfig dnet0 plumb.
If this works, an ifconfig -a shows your dnet0 device and all is well.
Put your hostname or IP into the +/etc/hostname.dnet0+(or create a empty file +/etc/dhcp.dnet0+ if you use DHCP) file and your Solaris should boot up with network enabled.
If the Solaris dnet driver doesn't work out of the box you could try the recommended steps described at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/techtips/assign_device_to_driver.jsp
If the above steps don't help, you could try a third party driver.
You didn't say what Tulip drivers you downloaded. Are they Masayuki Murayama's from http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng?
I didn't try the tu drivers, but generally his drivers work very well (Using the nfo driver myself)
The Readme explains the required steps to configure the drivers pretty well.
In general you can check if your system works with Solaris quite easily with Sun's Device Detection Tool ( http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.html ). It should tell you if your hardware works out of the box, if there are third party drivers or if there are no drivers at all.
The lo devices is the loopback device and it is always configured, regardless if there are other NICs or network at all.

  • Installing and Configuring 3Com 3C900B NIC

I am installing Solaris 7 on an INTEL, the system does not appear to
pick up my NIC card (3C900B). When I do a ipconfig -a all I see is the
localhost (lo0). I do not see an elxl0 or anything else. Is there something
that I am missing or am I expecting to much from the sytem to detect this
automatically? Any suggestions are appreciated, also once this is done I
need to confirm my steps to configure DNS.
Thanks much in advance to all who are willing to assist!

    i'm trying to install Solaris 10 - 6/06 on a some
what older P4 1.5 GHz comp with 512 MB of DDR RAM.
Everything goes well at booting the DVD except that
when it comes to the NIC configuration it skips my
NIC without configuring it. I always get the message:
Using RPC Bootparam to configure network..... and
after waiting for 1 minute it prints a message that
my NIC is skipped. How can i fix it?This is not a bug that must be fixed.
The installer is trying to automatically configure the NIC
using a RARPD server on the network, that tells the
    box it's IP4 address.
If you do not have a rarpd server installed on your network
you must manually enter the NIC configuration.
That happens automatically in the next few installation
    steps. That's all.

  • Network configuration Solaris 10.

    Hi all,
I got my solaris up and running with Audio and graphics working fine. Now I need to setup internet. I know the following details. Can anybody help me how to set this information. In linux I would, network configuration tool and on windows, I chang the TCP/IP properties. I don't know what to do in solaris.
    I ahve the following information.
    1) My IP Address
    2) Subnext mask
    3) DNS
    4) Primary gateway
    5) Sec. Gateway.

If your IP is dynamic, Solaris should get you connected to web, without your intervention. Just make sure the DHCP client is running (it runs, by default). Also check this compatibility list: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/sol/components/views/networking_all_results.page1.html
If everything looks good, you can try "inetmenu" tool to get a valid IP address. More information is available at OpenSolaris web site: http://opensolaris.org/os/community/laptop/inetmenu/

  • How to configure Solaris that third-party software can use Netscape

    Hi,
I don't know if this is Solaris configuration issue.
I have Storage Foundation installed on Solaris 10 SPARC.
And I am using the VEA GUI application to manage storage. Then I intentionally made some activities that the Error window appears with the link.
This link point to the Veritas web page.
After clicking on this link the error appears:
"Error attempting to launch web browser.:
    netscape: not found"
Please tell me whether this issue is because it needs some changes in Solaris or maybe the Storage Foundation needs to be configured properly?
The internet connection works fine while executing the Netscape from CDE.
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

I don't think it has anything to do with the third-party software. When you click on a link or document, the OS tries to access it using the associated application. In your case, clicking on a hyperlink tries to load the default web browser which on your system is Netscape.
If say, you installed Firefox and configured it to be the default web browser then Solaris would launch it instead.
Try to manually launch Netscape and in the preferences, set it as the default web browser. See how you go with that.

  • Is it possible to configure 2 SSIDs without using multiple VLANs?

I am trying to set up a 1231G to allow normal users to connect using WEP and visitors to connect with no encryption in guest mode. Using one SSID, I can get one or the other to work using the guest-mode command on the SSID, but have the problem that WEP mandatory or optional on the radio interface disables either the normal user or the guest. If I set up 2 separate SSIDs for each of these user groups is it necessary to assign a separate VLAN for each to make this work? The AP is on a network that is not trunked.
Thanks for any help or direction you can give me.

    Cisco Aironet 1200 Series
Using VLANs with Cisco Aironet Wireless Equipment
Deprecated versions of Cisco Aironet software permit binding multiple SSIDs to one VLAN. Current versions do not.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_configuration_example09186a00801d0815.shtml#
Cisco IOS Software Configuration Guide for Cisco Aironet Access Points, 12.2(15)JA
    Configuring Multiple SSIDs
    vlan vlan-id
(Optional) Assign the SSID to a VLAN on your network. Client devices that associate using the SSID are grouped into this VLAN. You can assign only one SSID to a VLAN.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00802085c4.html
    Also this answer from Cisco Aironet 1200 Series FAQ;
    Q. How many service set identifiers (SSIDs) can you have per VLAN?
    A. You can have only one SSID per VLAN. The use of multiple SSIDs over a single VLAN is not supported with Aironet APs.
Hope this helps! (sorry to be the bearer of bad news)
    Rob

  • Configuring Solaris 8 Sparc w/router and cable modem

I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 10 with Solaris 7
pre-installed. I decided to immediately upgrade to
Solaris 8. The operating system has installed properly
    so far.
However, I'm at the point now where I am entering
information to allow Solaris to connect to my network
and thus the Internet, and the combinations I have tried
    don't work.
I use a cable modem service with a Netgear RT314
four-port router. It functions in a standard way - the
cable modem is 192.168.0.1 and shows up on my
WinXP PC (in ipconfig /all) as the DNS server and
gateway server. On the PC, for "Connection-specific
DNS suffix", I see nc.rr.com (my ISP).
Solaris 8 wants to know my domain name, as well as
my DNS server. I don't know what domain name to give
it. I have tried nc.rr.com, but when I enter that plus
192.168.0.1 as the DNS server, I end up receiving this
message: ""Unable to find an entry for dchppc3 with the
    specified DNS configuration."
I have been afraid to move beyond this point, although
it's possible that it will work properly and just isn't
    receiving the confirmation it expects.
Any suggestions would be welcome, either in this forum
or emailed to me. My address is [email protected]
    Thanks.

I decided to plow ahead with the installation. It works
properly within my local network - I can ping dchp
addresses and view Web files from my local server
using 192.168.0.3 (that machine's dchp address).
However, it can't get to the Internet. So my problem
now is that I can see the router, but can't see the
Internet services that the router provides to the other
computers on my network. Presumably, I need to
alter my DNS settings ... however, on my PCs, I seem
to simply use the router (192.168.0.1) as the DNS, and
it properly passes the request along to my cable modem
provider. Why would this work for the PCs but not for
    Solaris 8? Thanks -

    From Solaris vmware, run
ifconfig -a -> this will show you the available interfaces
    then, ifconfig <interface name> <ip address> broadcast <broadcast ip> netmask <netmask ip> up
this will configure the host interface
check the routing table by netstat -nr
From windows 7, open putty and select new session and give the ip address of the solaris host, this will connect you to the vmware solaris, there you can connect oracle db.
