Confirmation Email has been read

I would like when sending an email to know that the recipient has open the mail.
How can this be done....I have used this function before but I also know it was not a standard facility with the Mac but I believe it can be done.
Can someone please explain the process to have the above function

Hi Thomas and everybody,
I have recently made the switch from PCs to a Mac and I just love it.
However, and in order to be quite fair against people's needs just a couple of comments:
1. Thomas, you say that many e-mail clients don't support read receipts. Like what clients? I've been working with Outlook express, Outlook (almost all versions), Thunderbird Lotus Notes. Every single client supports receipts. There is an issue for sure for sending mails to different clients but the fact remains that it is a valid and existing feature in all clients.
2. It's pretty useful, trust me. Even in corporate mail, sometimes we use it not only to check that the recipient received the e-mail but also when he did so, in order to follow up on a call. Nothing to be embarrassed of. And also guess what. Sometimes mails do not actually reach the recipient. And for important mails it is a good tool. (Not suggesting sending to everybody. That's why all mail clients have a feature).
Apple (And I really love the brand) seems to have an issue with messages receipts.
I have the issue in Iphone that there is no feature for activating a delivery receipt in SMS (also sometimes they fail), and now I see the same with mail.
Probably is a "mentality" issue, but as a consumer, I just can't get it.

  • Confirmation that email has been read

Is there a way in Mail to receive a confirmation that an email I've sent has been opened by the recipient? If yes, how do I do that?

there is a plugin somewhere on versiontracker.com to add some headers to your mail messages to add this feature, but if the recipient's email doesn't support it, you won't get a confirmation.

  • Verify an email has been read

I recently sent some emails which looked like they had been sent (they were in my sent box and I did not receive any "delivery faiure" notice) only to be told later that the mail had never been recieved. Is there anyway to verify a mail has been recieved? read?

OK guys, here is something that you may like. Please copy the following text into the Applescript editor, compile it and run it and have fun with all those nice return receipts ...
    Ody
This script is based upon the Standard Apple Script "Create New Mail" located in the folder
/library/scripts/Mail Scripts. I have deleted the unneccesary parts (at least for this purpose).
The script assumes that you multiple mail identities (accounts), so as in the original script,
the modified script asks you to select the account from which the email should be sent.
The rest of the script I've either deleted or is pretty much the same as the original.
The only "innovation" you see in line 22. Since we know the sender through the selection procedure,
I afterwards added a new line "\n" and then the required headerline (Disposition-Noticiation-To:)
together with the senders email that we already know. Please take care that theSender that
comes out of your address book doesn't contain single or double quotation marks. In this case
the mail will be sent out but the recipient will see no receipt request. When you compile this routine
    - what you definitely have to do - you will see that "\n" vanished and the rest of the former line
(Disposition-Notification-To ...) is now in line 23. Don't worry the \n that forces a new line in the outgoing
mail is still there and active.
Now you have to add a new rule to mark the mails where you have requested a Notification.
Within "Create New Rules" you have to edit the header and add a new Headertype named
"Disposition-Notification-To". The rule is simple: if a mail contains an @-sign in this headerline
colour it as you like. Now you not only will see within your sent items the mails where you have
requested a return receipt from addressee but also in the Inbox the mails where the sender
asks you send him a return receipt
After the script has been compiled and saved you can run it from within the editor. You will se blank
email window poping up. Now just write your email select the addressee and that's it.
The script below is an example for "New Email & Receipt" If you want to be perfect you can do the
same with "Answer & Receipt", "Answer to All & Receipt" and "Forward & Receipt" and by using iKey2
or something similar you can run those scripts from an external menu or Hot-key. If you like you can
try to start the script(s) from within Mail Act-On. But my Apple Mail always crashes when I tried to do this.
This has been tested on Intel Mac under 10.4.7 together with Exchange 2003 and Exim as a Mailserver
    Good luck - Ody

How do I send out an email, so that I can recieve confirmation that email was delivered?

If you are using Apple Mail, it does not support read receipts. Even if it did, most people will ignore such requests, so at best, it'd be a hit and miss situation.

is there a way for the sender of an email to see if the email has been read?

Some email clients allow for you to request a read receipt, but the sender also has the ability to refuse to send it as well. Much of that is controlled on the receiving end.

  • Show that an email has been opened

In brief, like Outlook is there a option to show when an email has been opened / read by the receiver

When composing a message you can ask for a notification to confirm that the message is read by going to Options and checking Return Receipt. In the same menu you can also ask for a Delivery Notification, which is more a technical confirmation that the message is deliverd to the recipient.
Note that either notification won't always be sent. It's up to the recipient or his mail server to send the return receipt or delivery notification.
