Confirmed: 7.3.1 Firmware Tightens Disk Sharing Via Internet

My AEBS has a USB hard drive connected to it and shared out with password protection.
With the 7.2.1 AEBS firmware, I could connect to this hard drive over the Internet by doing Go > Connect to Server > afp://ip.ip.ip.ip and clicking Connect. I'd then be prompted for my password to connect to the hard drive.
But when I upgraded my AEBS firmware to 7.3.1, this functionality no longer works. It appears that the only way to do this in 7.3.1 is to set up port mapping and map some port number (5678, for example) to port 548 of the AEBS' internal IP address. If I do that, then I am able to connect by doing Go > Connect to Server > afp://ip.ip.ip.ip:port and clicking Connect and then entering the password.
Has anyone else tried this?

The .sparsebundle was visible in Finder & ctrl+click revealed its contents, so disk access permissions were OK. The problem was that Time Machine seemed to lose recognition of this particular .sparsebundle as being my MBP's backup file.
So, I've deleted the file & started backing-up fresh from today. This incident is not a real problem, as I've only had TC set up for a couple of weeks. However, I just hope that these teething problems do not repeat with every subsequent TC software or firmware update, otherwise this would become a single point of failure and the benefits of automated backup via TC would be lost.

So they need more time, okay. But I feel lied to. The least they could do is make a press release with an ETA! The hush hush, makes it seem like they are going to scrap it and pretend it never happened.

and wanted to do what the title said.
So, I am able to share the disks fine over the LAN with both Mac and Windows PCs.
My Question is:
-some people have said that to map the disk over network, you need the AirPort utility installed onto the computer. Is this true?
-I am unable to access the disk over the internet.
I am wondering if I should configure the "Disks" then File Sharing section of Airport Utility or whether I should turn to the Advanced> Port Mapping section.
For the File Sharing Section:
1.     What is the username needed when trying to connect to the disk?
2.     Do I need to enable share disk over WAN and also the checkbox to enable the Bonjour service?
3.     What do I need to fill out for WINS server?
4.     Can I just mount the drive using the WAN IP?
Port Mapping:
1.     What exactly is personal file sharing? Do I need to use this to share my hard drive? And is it only compatible with Mac?
2.     Should I use the IP address 10.0.0.1 (default IP of router) as the place where I want to map to?

You do not need the AirPort Utility installed on your computer in order to access a shared drive from either a remote location or on the local network. This utility's primary purpose is for administering the base station.
You will need to both enable File Sharing and configure the AirPort for Port Mapping. It is pretty much described step-by-step in the article you referenced in the beginning of your post.
Ok, so let's go over the basic steps to see if anything was missed.
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn, and then, note the IP address shown.
Select Manual Setup.
Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
Select Disks, and then, select File Sharing.
Verify that both the "Enable file sharing" and "Share disks over WAN" options are enabled.
Verify that Secure Shared Disks = With a disk password. (Recommended)
Verify that AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed. (Recommended)
Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
For Service, select the "Personal File Sharing" option. (Note: This option would only allow Mac clients to access the AirPort Disks. If you want both Macs and PCs to connect, you would need to leave this field at its default value and enter the appropriate SMB ports to the mix of ports to be opened.)
In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your AEBSn that you wrote down in step 1. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548. Click Continue.
In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "AirPort Disk File Sharing," and then, click Done.
Click on Update.
To connect to the shared AirPort Disk from a remote location using a Mac:
From the Finder > Go > Connect to Server.
Enter the DynDNS-provided Domain Name or Pubic (WAN-side) IP address of the AEBSn, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 11 of the previous procedure. For example: afp://www.mydyndnsdomain.com:8888 or afp://123.456.789.123:8888
Click Connect.
You should be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password should be the Disk password for the AEBSn that you created in step 6 previously.
Click Connect.

Custom icon on a disk shared via Airport Extreme

I have a USB hard drive that I am sharing via an airport extreme. In the finder, under "Shared" I see my airport extreme. When I click on that, I see my external drive. I would like to change the icon for that, but the standard Get Info -> paste doesn't seem to work.
I've tried to set a custom icon on a test folder on my hard drive and it works. I also tried it on a test folder on the USB drive shared via airport extreme, and that worked. But I can't set the icon for the drive itself. Any suggestions?

File sharing via internet

Hi to all!
Can anybody tell, how to share files with other internet users.
I'd like to offer a download to a colleague in an other country via internet. he uses a windows-pc and shall be able to download it directly from my mac, but with a limited access to one folder (public???). AND only he should be able to access the folder. Is that possible with my mac, without additional file-sharing apps like limewire e.g.
As I understand from the help center it's only possible with "idisk". Is that true? What about the ftp-functions?
I don't know much about this stuff, so many thanks for any hints!

G5 1.8 Dual Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The easiest by miles is to have .Mac or other website host, and send files to it via Filechute.
All you do is drag the file from Finder onto the Filechute icon in your Dock, and it uploads the file for you to whatever folder you want your friend to access. (This can be password protected in Other Settings) It does this via ftp and works a lot quicker than any klutzy webdav iDisk will.
Fast and simple uploading is not the best bit however! Filechute is really neat, as it auto generates the link to that file too.
So to share that file all you do is click on the link, Filechute opens an email with the info included and you send the email to your friend. He double clicks the link and auto downloads the file.
Sure you can get free ftp programmes, but for simplicity and minimal need to know requirements, $15 Filechute is the best IMO.

TC file sharing via internet

I am having trouble getting my TC setup so while on another network, I can access the files stored on it.
I followed all of the instructions listed on the guide at macrumors, but I get to the part where I am supposed to change the "Private IP Address" to the one that is listed on the summary page (which has been assigned to my TC). In the Private IP Address field, it lists the address as aa.b.c.ddd
When I try to change this to the assigned IP address, it only allows me to change the .ddd part. The other three areas are not able to be changed.
Can someone tell me what I need to do in order to correct this?

How to configure Airport Extreme AFP disk sharing to host multiple users' home-directories (Lion, using autofs)

I have this working, but only by completely bypassing access control, using guest access with read+write permissions.
Do I need to buy Lion Server, to do this. All my past unix/linux experience says Lion Server should _not_ be necessary.
This seems like a simple & obvious setup objective, but it is proving to be harder than I would imagine.
Setup:
multiple users, sharing two mac mini's running OSX Lion
connected to an Airport Extreme (4th gen) with a USB disk shared (either via disk password, AEBS password, or using AEBS user's passwords).
After much experimentation and web research, I finally have managed to get the mini's to auto mount the Airport Extreme's AFP shared USB disk. Well almost... It only works if, on the Airport, I set the guest access permissions to read+write and select the "Secure Shared Disks" method to "With disk password" or "with Airport Extreme password". In other words, it only works if I essentially bypass/disable access control by using the guest authentication mechanism to the AFP shared disk.
On the Lion side of this, I am automounting the users directories via "autofs". The config files for this are
/etc/auto_master:

Then, after rebooting and verifying read+write access to the /afp/users directories, I change each user's home directory: In System Preferences > System > Users & Groups, I right-click over the users to access the Advanced Options, changing the Home directory field to point at the AFP-mounted /afp/users/Users/* home directories.
I experimented with alternate UAM specifications, as well as both OSX and AESB users & passwords. Using guest access is the only thing that has worked.
Any pointers would be appreciated...

Based on lots more experimentation which confirms the information in a parallel discussion (cf. Automount share as non ROOT or SYSTEM user! https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3221944), I have concluded that the Lion 10.7.2 implementation of AutoFS mechanism is broken. I submitted a bug report via apple.com/feedback.
Work arounds..?
Earlier I wondered if installing Lion OSX Server was necessary. The more I contemplate this, the more I am convinced it _should_not_ be necessary. The client-server architecture is clear: my mac's are the file-server client's and the Airport Extreme is supposed to act as the file server. The only thing instaling Lion Server would do (besides enriching Apple.com) is enable me to configure one of the mac's as the file server. This would require it to be "always on" (thus enriching my electric utility as wel). Okay, an additional benefit would be configuring software RAID disks attached to the Lion server, but Time Machine has worked fine for me in the past, backing up to disks mounted on the Airport Extreme.
One solution is to create a disk partition for each user and instruct each user to connect / authenticate to the Airport Extreme AFP share at login. The multiplicity of partitions is necessary since the first user to mount the AFP share, takes ownership of it, blocking other users from accessing that disk partition. A user can "steal" ownership by reconnecting, but this will leave the other user's applications & open files dangling.
This disfunctional situation really *****. Before instaling Lion, I put a 64 GB SSD (solid state disk) in each of our mac's. I did this expecting to easily configure the /Users/* data on external networked storage. I'm having a dejavu "Bill Gates"-ware moment; problems like this were why I abandoned Windoz.
I will make a few more experiments using the depreciated /etc/fstab mechanism. Maybe that will bypass the broken-ness of AutoFS...? Alternately, I guess I could also try to run Kerberos authentication to bypass whatever is broken in AutoFS, but that would require a running a Kerberos daemon somewhere. Possibly I could configure a Kerberos service to run on both my mac's (without installing Apple's Lion Server)...?

Unable to view *certain* folders on a USB disk shared by Airport Extreme

I have a 1 TB FAT32 formatted USB drive shared over an Airport Extreme (firmware 7.4.2).
A few days ago I was reorganising media files on the hard drive. I created a subfolder in a folder called 'Movies' and copied a couple of VOB files into the subfolder. Suddenly, the entire contents of the 'Movies' folder vanished. I unmounted and re-mounted the shared disk on the Mac (browsing to the base station in finder and clicking eject). I am able to see all other top level folders and other files on the shared drive, but the 'Movies' folder is empty. The Airport logs indicated a problem with the volume, so I disconnected the drive from the airport, plugged it into the mac and ran disk utility to verify the disk. No errors were reported.
Here is where it gets interesting.
1) When I plug the USB drive into my Macbook Pro, I am able to mount the drive and browse all the directories, including the Movies folder - all my files are still there.
2) If I plug the disk back into the airport and mount it on the mac, the 'Movies' folder appears empty.
3) The hard disk usage reported (both in the airport utility and in finder) is consistent with the 'Movies' folder still being there, however the Movies folder shows up at Zero bytes in 'Get Info'
4) If I open a terminal window and cd to the mounted hard disk, 'ls -al' reports no files. However, I can 'cd' to a sub-directory of the Movies folder that I know exists, and 'ls' shows all the files in the sub folder!
I can even copy files in the 'Movies' folder to another location if I know then name - but 'ls' cannot see it, and neither can 'du'
5) I attached the drive to a Windows machine and ran chkdsk and even did a surface scan - no problems reported.
I'm stumped. Has anyone seen this wierd behaviour before? The disk is fine when mounted directly on a mac or windows machine - but when mounted and shared via the airport, the Movies folder is not visible, though it is definitely there!

Hello nikkjazz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) supports USB storage devices that use a block size of 512 bytes ... and is true whether the device is formatted for HFS+, FAT16 or FAT32. If yours is not, then it may explain why you can see the folders when the drive is directly attached to the Mac, but not so when connected to the AEBSn.

Open firmware startup disk by default

I have an iMac which by default always goes to the open firmware startup disk screen. How do I get rid of this? I have tried zapping the PRAM, reinstalling the OS and a different hard drive. There are no problems w/ the functionality of the computer or the software and there are no symptoms to say that there is anything wrong w/ the computer. Just want to get rid of having to hit enter at the firmware startup disk screen every time I turn it on. Any suggestions please.

Mark, it appears that the defauly startup mode has been changed on your Mac.
Probably the easiest way to get back to normal is using a utility. I use the free utility OnyX. In OnyX go to Parameters>Login and at the bottom of the pane you can change your Mac's default startup mode.

On a Virtual Machine with a secondary VHDX attached, I cannot manage (bring online, initialize, partition, format, or write to) the VHDX hard drive once it has "Enable Virtual Hard Disk Sharing (VHD Sharing)" enabled.
Questions:
Should I be able to manage (bring online, initialize, partition, format, and write to) a VHDX hard drive once it has VHD Sharing enabled? If I should be able to manage it, what am I missing?
Topography:
One SuperMicro Cluster In a Box (CIB) with 2012 R2 Data Center on each node. Microsoft Failover Cluster installed and working on each node. The Failover Cluster Servers on each host passes all cluster validation tests. Two Hyper-V 2012 R2 Data Center Virtual
Machine (VM) servers, one on each node. 1 common Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) and 1 Generation 2 Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) shared volume both Resilient File System (REFS) formatted. One 5 Gigabit (Gb) Virtual Hard Drive Type X (VHDX) file on the CSV and/or
SOFS. Integrity bit and read only turned off on VHDX file.
Each of the two Hyper-V VMs have one 127Gb VHDX Generation 2 primary hard drive and 1 VHDX secondary hard drive attached, both on SCSI Controller #1.
Background:
If I start VM1 without the VHD Sharing enabled on the secondary hard drive, I can bring the drive online, initialize, partition, format, and write to the drive.
If I enable VHD Sharing, I can no longer modify the drive in Disk Management in any way. With or without VM2 running.
Both VMs and the CSV and SOFS are on the same host cluster server, or not, no difference…
The VHDX is referenced either by the CSV name C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\TEST1.VHDX
or a Shared Folder name
\\sharedfolder\folder\Test1.VHDX .
If I start VM1 with VHD Sharing disabled and I format the drive, then shut down and enable VHD Sharing, the drive is offline and requests initialization which fails with an "I/O device error", every other attempt to manage the drive fails with
the same "I/O device error", error.

Hi All,
I had to buy a Willy Wonka bar and spend a golden ticket to get an answer to this one.
We found that the default LogicalSectorSizeBytes of a VHDX is 512b. It needs to be 4kb.
The Host drive doesn't seem to matter CSV or SOFS. Below is a way to create a VHDX with the correct LogicalSectorSizeBytes.
In Power Shell, type --> New-VHD -Path C:\ClusterStorage\Volume4\Cluster2DataDisks\Cluster2Disk1.vhdx -SizeBytes 200Gb -PhysicalSectorSizeBytes 4kb -LogicalSectorSizeBytes 4kb
Attach the resulting file to your guest cluster servers and set the Enable Virtual Hard Disk Sharing option on both server. You should now be able to bring the drives on-line and initialize them. They will also add to the guest cluster pool.
Change the size, path and file name above to fit your Cluster Servers configuration.

Cluster Quorum Disk failing inside Guest cluster VMs in Hyper-V Cluster using Virtual Disk Sharing Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I'm having a problem in a VM Guest cluster using Windows Server 2012 R2 and virtual disk sharing enabled.
It's a SQL 2012 cluster, which has around 10 vhdx disks shared this way. all the VHDX files are inside LUNs on a SAN. These LUNs are presented to all clustered members of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster, via Cluster Shared Volumes.
Yesterday happened a very strange problem, both the Quorum Disk and the DTC disks got the information completetly erased. The vhdx disks themselves where there, but the info inside was gone.
The SQL admin had to recreated both disks, but now we don't know if this issue was related to the virtualization platform or another event inside the cluster itself.
Right now I'm seen this errors on one of the VM Guest:

We don't know if this can happen again, what if this happens on disk with data?! We don't know if this is related to the virtual disk sharing technology or anything related to virtualization, but I'm asking here to find out if it is a possibility.

The storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual disk sharing

I deployed 2 hyper v vitual machines a while ago, and i did that because I needed to test my current game Project, which is an
online game. However, i've had some problems with my Windows installation then I had to reset the pc by making it a refresh
install. I still have the hyper v virtual disks, but i cannot attach it to a new hyper-v virtual machine. it pops up this message:

According to the error message , it seems that it is not a permission issue .
The VM is Gen 1 or Gen2 ?
Generally the error message occurs when you enable "shared vhdx" on standalone/client hyper-v host :
Please try to attach the VHDx file to IDE controller if it is a Gen 1 virtual machine (because only the SCSI controller has the option "virtual hard disk sharing" and Gen 1 VM only can boot from IDE )
All in all , please do not use this feature without CSV or Scale-Out File Server with SMB 3.0 on file-based storage .
If it is not the case , please detail steps what you did .

Disk Sharing- Multiple disk installation

This was already asked by another user here (with no response or resolution) and I have exactly the same problem.
I have an MBA(4,1), and I'm trying to install Adobe CS3 via Disk Sharing from an iMac. Installation proceeds through disk 1, but fails when I'm prompted to insert disk 2. The installation program never seems to recognize that disk 2 has been inserted into the iMac.
Any ideas?

I gave up on installing via Disk Sharing, too. In my case, CS3 was already installed on the iMac, so I just copied all the application files and files from /Library/Application Support/Adobe over to my MBA (not sure if that was necesary). That also worked like a charm.

I am attempting to create new virtual machines in Hyper-V on Windows 10 Enterprise Tech. Preview and I am continually getting the error "The storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual hard disk sharing.". I am not trying
to setup a shared VM or VHD, just a basic VHD.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

This issue is listed in the release notes and currently there is no fix on our side. Have to wait for the next build.

The statement is miss-quoted. It was about Hyper -V. An update KB3053898
was released to fix that

"Do Not Disconnect!?" "Firmware. Disk Write Error" ???????? Help Please

Ok, heres the deal. I restored my ipod...but now it contiunes to have a "! in a triangle shape" sometimes refferes to as a "sad ipod" Well ive read the Whole Freakin Apple Site tryed the "5 R's" they say to try and others but still the same thing. And as a resul of Restoring My ipod mini it will not connect to itunes. It continues to say "Do Not Disconnect" on the ipod mini screen.(This is very very annoying) Then in itunes it will say "ipod updater" or something or that sort...(now get ready this is the biggest twist) so i click update....wait a sec as it connects..then it says...(ok here it is) "Firmware. Disk write error"...all at the sametime my ipod is displaying on its screen "Do Not Disconnect".........well im baffled so if anyone can please help me...i would repay them with my life....Im literaly dieing without it.

“Firmware Update Failure” Possible Solution
-- Disconnect the iPod
-- Right click on "My Computer"
-- Select "Manage"
-- Select "Device Manager"
-- Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
-- Right click on "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller"
-- Click on "Disable"
-- Click "OK" to accept changes
Run the Updater software (Start==>Run==>iPod) and wait till it says to "Plug in an iPod to update it"
Plug in the iPod and wait (for a long while). It takes awhile because you are now running at USB 1.1 speeds. When it finally shows up, do the "update" or "restore", which ever you were trying to do.
You can try to re-enable the "Enhanced PCI TO USB Host controller" after you are done running the Updater software and try to copy your songs and pictures to the iPod. This may or may not work. If not, revert back to USB1.1.
