CONFIRMED: Cutting AT& Micro-SIM to Nano-SIM size works!

OK, I bought an iPhone 5 from Apple store in Emeryville, CA yesterday for full retail (I did this because my phone plan is from my employer and they are not allowing us iPhone 5's yet) . . . i didn't realize the old SIM would not fit in the new phone.
Plan A: go to AT&T store to see if they could change the SIM for me and activate the new phone under my existing number.
Plan B: cut/file the old micro-SIM to nano-SIM size and see if it works.  There were conflicting accounts on the web if this would work.
Plan C: tell my employer IT dept that I lost my iPhone4s and that I bought a new iPhone5 (with my own money) and ask them to activate it for me.
Results:
Plan A: Alas, since my phone plan is with my employer this did not work . . . service was good though and they did try.
Plan B: This worked! I used a nail file to basically file down all of the edges of the micro SIM until they matched the dimensions of the nano-SIM.  I tried using sandpaper but I was finding that I couldn't file the edges straight . . . nail file seemed to work better.  You may need to file the overall thickness of the micro SIM just slightly.  Some reports on the web say you don't need to do this but in my case it didn't slide in smoothly (and I didn't want to force it) until I did this.
Plan C: I did not need to test this thankfully
I am on AT&T here in the US so YMMV but I can confirm this works for AT&T phones using Mirco-SIM
Hope this is helpful to some!

When doing this did you loose any mms features?  How about LTE?  Looking to possibly do the same thing.  Thanks in advance.

  • Cut down Micro Sim in iPhone 6

    Hi everyone,
Has anybody successfully used a cut down micro sim in the iPhone 6?
    Thanks

DON'T try it. The micro sim might be a little bit thicker than the nano sim. So there is a possibility that the sim and sim trap get stuck and you won't get it out.

  • Can you cut a micro sim card and use it in an unlocked iPhone 5s?

I bought an unlocked iPhone 5s but I still have a contract and use a micro sim card. Is it possible to cut my sim card and still be able to use it with the iPhone 5s?

There are SIM cutters, but first ask your carrier if they can provide a nano-SIM.  You will still keep the same phone number, and it won't affect he contract.

  • Iphone 4, micro sim doesnt work.

Hi. Iv bougth iphone 4 from apple store. There said iv had to cut sim. I think iv made it to microsim correctly, but iphone still doesnt react to it.. it says no sim installed.. iv used another one, and it still doesnt work..

Cutting a normal Sim down to a Micro-Sim if not done correctly will cause permanent damage to the Sim, try inserting a real micro-sim to see if it works, this way you could verify if the problem resides on the phone or in the cut Sim.

  • Will I be able to cut a micro sim to a nano sim?

    Replies will be great :)

A search would have worked better, this has been covered.
The nano sim is also 15% thinner so you would have to sand it down without damaging it. Even then Apple says they are not compatible.

  • I have a iPhone 4 micro sim and I plan on getting a iPhone 5 and would I be able to change my current micro sim to the new nano sim by my carrier ?

Call your carrier and ask if they will be furnishing nano sims. If not, get out the sandpaper, cutting tools & search Google for how to cut a micro sim down to nano sim size. You will also need to sand down the thickness. I suggest you get several sims to practice on.

  • Can micro sim info be transferred to the nano sim?

Can anyone explain the nano sim to me please? I will like to know if the normal micro sim info can be transferred to the nano sim?
Also if the micro sim was in a blackberry before., Can info from that sim be tranferred to the nano sim for iphone?

The recording capability should be the same. If you want to cut down the micro SIM to nano SIM size it can be done with scissors. Then the iPhone can import contacts from the now cut down micro SIM. And it then will be able to use this cutdown SIM as it SIM Card. The iPhone itself does not normally add data to the SIM Card, because Apple does not include this in the iOS Firmware. So the iPhone will not add new contacts or numbers to the SIM, but it can read it.
Back to your question if you want to write data to nano SIM you will have to use a cell phone other than iPhone to write it.

  • US iPad 3G and using more than one micro-sim

    Hello
I'm planning on ordering a 3G iPad from the US. I travel very regularly and plan on having micro-sim cards for the countries I visit all the time i.e France, UK, Germany and others. Obviously it would be a lot cheaper to have separate sim cards for each country as opposed to roaming on a single subscription.
My question is whether any micro-sim will work in the US iPad 3G straight out of the box. I'll have absolutely no need for the AT&T sim.
    Thanks

This post is a little dated, but, as long as I'm here: I just got back from Canada, where I was able to do exactly this: I went into a Bell store in Vancouver and got a microSIM for my 3G iPad 2 ($5).  We took my AT&T SIM out and put the Bell SIM in, and it worked exactly the way it should have: I went to "Cellular Data" in Settings and it let me sign up for a variety of month-to-month plans; I went for 5 GB of service for $35.  The only thing I had to work around was that the sign-up form wouldn't accept "CA" as a Canadian province; I substituted "BC", and it was happy.  The service worked great, and was much cheaper than AT&T's international data roaming plan.
I presume I could go back to Canada and re-use the SIM to purchase a new plan, but I'm not sure how long that would work -- do SIMs (and their phone numbers) used in this way time out after awhile?
To perhaps extend the discussion a bit: I'm going to be in France and the UK in July, and would like to do the same sort of thing, ideally getting one microSIM and service plan that would work in both countries.  Orange provides service in France and the UK, but I'm not sure if a service plan bought in France would continue to work in the UK.  Any advice?

  • Could any one tell me nano sim can be cut from Normal sim like micro sim. I heard new iPhone uses nano sim

    Hi All,
My friend told me he will get unlocked new iPhone on first week of launch .He is in Canada and i am in India. I heard new iPhone features nano sim. It is possible to cut nano sim from normal sim like we do for micro sim. iPhone releases in India only in November so if we cant get nano sim  from normal sim , then i have to postponed my new iPhone purchase

No one here knows Apple's plans regarding any new iPhone & what type of sim that phone may or may not use. As to whether a Mico sim can be cut down to Nano size, the answer is yes. I suspect cutters will appear on the market shortly after such is released.
The real question you should be asking is why, if you live India, are you looking to purchase an iPhone anywhere else other than India. iPhone warranty & support is country specific, only valid in country of original purchase. You purchase an iPhone in Canada, you prepared to physically bring the phone back to Canada for ALL warranty & support issues? You can't mail it back to Apple. Makes no sense to me.

  • How will i be able to use my micro sim card from my iPhone 4s, in the nano sim card tray in the iphone 5?

How will i be able to use my micro sim card from my iPhone 4s, in the nano sim card tray in the iphone 5?

You can't. The nano SIM is 15% thinner compared to its previous two generations, so even if it is cut in the same size, the thickness would be different, meaning the cut micro SIM cannot fit into the nano SIM slot.

  • My iPad 3 microsim card slot is stuck or jammed. Manually cut micro sim is stuck inside the slot. I can't open it. How to proceed?

My iPad 3 microsim card slot is stuck or jammed. Manually cut micro sim is stuck inside the slot. I can't open it. How to proceed?

If they can't extract the SIM without opening the iPad (which no service center is authorized to do), and you can't manage to get it out yourself, then you'll probably have to pay Apple's out-of-warranty replacement price and get the iPad replaced. Use of a cut-down SIM is not covered under warranty.

  • Transferring data from micro SIM to nano

I have an unlocked IP6 and want to activate it on Verizon..  I understand about using a currently activated SIM when I first turn on the phone.  I currently have an IP4s with a micro SIM card and need an activated nano SIM.  Who can transfer my data to the new card, and will it appear activated to Verizon?

That's fine but doesn't the sim card have the network settings etc? Idealy, I'd like to know if the Apple store can copy/port what's on the micro sim from my iPhone 4 to the nano sim that will go into the iPhone 5.

Comment transformer micro sim en nano sim?

Hey Kay,Yes you can keep the same number when tranfering different size SIMS. Its normally an easy process of popping into a Telstra store (with the appropriate ID) and request the size you want. It's also normally a free and they'll actives the sim for you there and then. I say this as I've replaced a few sims in my time and it's always been a breeze. Telstra Store Locations

Can I get my sim card cut into a micro sim at an apple store?

Last I heard, "trimming" the SIM cards was frowned upon by the carriers, so I doubt Apple would go ahead and do such a thing at the Stores.
    But YMMV.
