Conflict between MAIL and AOL - cannot send! same port?

I just spent an hour on the phone with a very nice Apple tech and it turns out that the reason I cannot send mail (I can, intermittently) on my Mac mail application is that it conflicts (he believes) with aol, i.e. perhaps they are sharing the same port.
The error message says mail cannot be delivered on Port 25 - but when I sign out of aol, mail works!
Is there a way to adjust the port aol uses, or make some other change with aol so I can have both app's open at the same time?

I don't use the aol browser, but I do like to sign on directly
to check my "other" (i.e. aol) email, use the address book, etc.
Apple provides what is called the AOL Service Assistant which will transfer (from the AOL program) your AOL email account or accounts to the Mail application, AOL address book contacts to the Address Book application and I believe it will also transfer AOL bookmarks to Safari so you can dump using what is a VERY old program for OS X which I doubt AOL will provide another update for.
I have no idea if it is possible to change the port used by the AOL program and I'm not even sure if the AOL program uses an SMTP server for sending messages with an AOL account.

I have 3 AOL screen names and have been using them with OSX mail for years. Now, one of the accounts refuses to send email.
I get:
"cannot send email using the server smpt.aol.com"
My other 2 account use the same server and no problem.
I completely trashed my old OSX mail and reinstalled...even dumped the preferences so it started from scratch and still the same problem. If I run the AOL application I can send all day but I really want to use OSX mail.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

After you started from scratch, did you reconfigure the settings in Apple Mail for AOL?
This is a handy utility AOL Services Assistant, that does it automatically.

I an using a G5 Mac and when I use my AOL e-mail and send out an e-mail I am told that I have been "Black Listed" and I cannot send it.

I am using a G5 Mac and AOL e-mail. I cannot send a message out without being told that I have been "Black Listed"

Sometimes an ISP will bloc a whole other ISP too, if it's the source of too much SPAM.

Aol cannot send mail

I believe my problems started a couple of weeks ago after trying to set up Icloud.
I can no longer send AOL mail - I get:
Cannot Send Mail
The user name or passowrd for "[email protected]@smtp.aol.com" is incorrect
The name & passowrd are correct and it was working fine for 2 years!
I've rebooted, deleted and reinstated accounts. I've also tried setting up an additional server "imap.aol.com" but no success
I get the identical problem on my Ipad2.....Iphone/Ipad2 both stopped sending email on the same day.
I can send if I use me.com but not aol.com
Any ideas gratefully received

The outgoing server password is locked, I assume it takes the Name/Password from the initial set up screen.
I also tried switching the "automatically set Server" (for AOL) off, & adding a new one manually (Other SMTP Servers).
Unfortunately, neither solved my problem - thank you for your help

i figured out a solution if anyone is having the same problem
go to preferences in mail
pick the mail account that is not sending
if your outgoing mail server states it offline as mine did
click the dropdown and than click edit smtp
a window will come up that says account information and advanced
click advanced
renter your password and ok
restart your computer - when it restarts it will send emails

Try this. Check the primary outgoing mail server username and password and make sure that they are in the settings even if it says that they are optional.
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if you can then send emails.

I'm having the exact same problem on my iMac. I can receive email from imap.mail.yahoo.com, but cannot receive from smtp.mail.yahoo.com. I have not changed these settings in years and as of a few days ago they stopped working. These settings work fine on my iPhone and iPad.
So far I have:
-Deleted accounts and reestablished them
-Deleted the Mail preference file ->com.apple.mail.plist

This is what it says in the window
"Cannot send message using the server iCloud (iCloud)
The server response was: Blocked -- see **********
It's the same regardless of the addressee. Above is just one example.
Connection doctor, by the way, says all is OK in re: SMTP server.

I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!

How can I resolve conflict between itunes and Windows 8.1

When downloading itunes to my laptop computer, using Windows 8.1 my email/network account will not work on that computer. It is fine on other devices such as ipad and Windows phone. I can also pick up emails on online on the same laptop. There appears to be a conflict between itunes and Windows 8.1

Name space conflict between static and instance method

Hello,
there seems to be a very unfortunate name space conflict between static and instance method name. Consider:
static String description() that should return a description of a class.
String description() that should return a description of an instance.
That seems to confuse the compiler. How come? Static and instance methods don't have anything to get confused about.

It's not a bug, it's the way it's supposed to be.
Since a static method can be called the same way an instance method
A instance = new A();
A.staticMethod();
instance.staticMethod();it's not allowed.
Also in the class, you can call
public void myMethod() {
instanceMethodInClass(); // You don't need this, it's superfluous
staticMethodInClass(); // You don't need the class name.
}If you didn't understand, then just accept the fact that it is so. Some day you'll understand it.

Conflict between VPN and Airport disk

Hello Folks, I just bought a brand new airport extreme 802n.
I thought it would be working fine with my Macbook pro, but it doesn't.
I can't access any externe hard disk or USB Stick through the airport extreme, although the format is FAT32. I checked and checked but found nothing useful. All the settings are default.
Worth to mention, I always use a cisco VPN client to get connected to the Internet (university student).
There are few times when I disconnected the VPN Client, the USB Client can be found and read, but not be written.
I though it is a conflict between VPN and Airport disk. So I tried without VPN, but the USB stick and the extern hard disk still didn't work properly. I have no idea what is happening could somebody help?
By the way is it possible to set Airport extreme as a VPN router so I don't have to use the cisco VPN client anyway?

I have an Airport Extreme connected to a cable modem
with comcast as my isp. The Extreme is connected to
a G4 dual processor mac via ethernet. I also have 3
airport expresses around the house to work as range
extenders. When I had the G4 connect to the Extreme
via its internal airport card, I had no difficulty
connecting to any of the Expresses around the house
with my g4 powerbook. Now that I have the G4 Dual
directly connected by ethernet to get the fastest
speed, I cannot get my expresses or my laptop to
connect through my laptop to the base station. all
lights are green on the expresses, but running
network diagnostics on the powerbook shows red or
yellow for the last two buttons on the right. Do I
have a configuration problem or an Extreme that won't
bridge properly?
Check that the G4 Dual has a location configured with
only "Built-In Ethernet" activated, and that its
Ethernet connection isn't shared on AirPort.
Turn off all your AX and check that your
PB G4 is able to connect to "your" AirPort network.
Take advantage of this silence of all your AX
to run an analysis of your wireless environnement:
- check that you don't have any neighbor wireless
network,
- check that on each of your AX settlement you have a
very good reception of "your" AirPort network.
If everything works fine to that point, add one AX to
your network, and check the reachability of your network
where you wanted to extend it.

Not able to log out of Yahoo mail and AOL mail

This started happening about two days ago. I am able to log into my Yahoo mail and Aol mail accounts but I cannot sign out.

What happens when you go to the web based mail for your email account?
Are you able to login and send / receive messages from the web?
If so, you might need to check outgoing email settings on your iPhone
Settings > Mail, Contacts Calendars
Tap on the account you are having an issue with
Tap on the email address beside the word Account
Tap on info beside SMTP (SMTP = outgoing mail server)
Tap on the SMTP server name again.
Make sure server is turned on
Check settings & port info, password, etc.
