Conflicting answers on upgrading 10.3.9 to 10.5

I was at the Apple Store today and wanted to purchase OS X 10.5, but first asked if there would be a problem installing it on my iMac G5 as an upgrade from 10.3.9. The first person I spoke to said she thought I had to install 10.4 first; she was unsure and called over a second person, who said that really did have to get 10.4 before I could upgrade to 10.5. He said he thought there may be a way to upgrade directly to 10.5 but it involved "archiving" my current files first, and was very complicated. Of course, they both told me that Apple no longer sold 10.4 so I would have to get it from eBay or someplace. This seems ridiculous to me, so I searched here, and found a bunch of other people asking the same question -- and nobody giving a definitive answer!
I certainly can't see buying 10.4 just so I can immediately buy 10.5! There's nothing actually WRONG with my iMac, so I don't see why I should go to the expense of replacing it with a new model; I want to upgrade to 10.5 simply because it seems every program or peripheral on the market today says it requires OS X 10.4 at a minimum -- and if I'm going to upgrade, I would like the latest OS (even if I can't use every feature because I'm not on an Intel Mac). [One of the things I would like to get is an external HD so I can easily back up my files, and have simple access to music and photo files while getting them off my main HD, where they're eating up space. I see a bunch of answers on here saying you should always back up all your files before attempting an upgrade -- but of course, all the external HDs I see now require that you have 10.4 to use them! So the only way I can back up my files is to burn them all to CD.]
Anyway, I am really confused. I see people here saying as long as you meet the tech requirements for 10.5, upgrading is a snap. I see others saying it may be a problem to upgrade from 10.3.9. The people in the Apple Store said I needed 10.4 first. WHICH IS IT?
I have a 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM. According to System Profiler, I have on Macintosh HD:
Capacity: 74.41 GB
Available: 31.52 GB

I contacted Western Digital by e-mail. Here's the exchange. Can you interpret what they're actually trying to say? When he says the drive has only been tested and guaranteed to work with 10.4.8, is that just a technicality to absolve them of any responsibility if it doesn't work?
Possibility of using the drive without using the software?

I purchased the My Book but have not yet opened the package in the event I have to return it. I have an iMac G5 which is still using OS X 10.3.9. I know that the My Book requires 10.4.11. However, I was advised at a Mac forum that the OS compatibility for external drives refers to the software, not the drive itself. But, this did not take into account the fact that, apparently (according to the specs I checked online) your drive does not come with a software disk, but loads the software automatically when it is plugged in to the computer.
I actually want to upgrade my iMac's OS to 10.5, specifically because peripherals such as this one, as well as software programs, all now require at least 10.4. However, I was also advised to do a complete backup of my files before attempting such an upgrade. I figured if I could use the drive without the software, it would make sense to get it now and use it to backup my files, and then install 10.5. But, since your drive automatically loads its software, I am now not sure if there is any way to do this. I was told that at the Mac forum that it might be possible to "Force Quit the WD installer as soon as it begins running, then use Disk Utility to format the drive (which will erase the WD software and its installer)." This sounds like a potentially dangerous approach, so I am hoping YOU can tell me if I have any options here. If I were to do that, would I then be able to download the WD software and re-install it later, after I install OS X 10.5? Or would doing any of this mess up the drive and void the warranty? Please advise!

Dear Jeffrey,
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.
The My Book Home Edition drive may work with your iMAC G5 but, unfortunately, there is not guarantee that the drive will work with MAC OS 10.3.9 since it's been only tested and guarantee to work on 10.4.8 or higher. Please try to do the upgrade first and then install the external drive.
As per the WD Anywhere Backup software, you can download it from the link below:

  • Still getting conflicting answers about upgrading a line to smart phone

A the risk of incurring the ire of some people, I simply feel compelled to restate my question about converting a basic (existing line) phone to a smart phone after 6/28. My question is sincere not asked in a cynical way, and I am still unsure of the answer because of differing answers even within the official ranks of verizon. I understand all the elements of the 'awesome' new share plan (even though I prefer to avoid it for now). So, if anyone knows where to find the specific documentation that refers to this would you please offer links to said documents. Direct answers, even from people who Identify themselves as support personnel (here in forums) have as recently as yesterday, been shown wrong. While I offer thanks to anyone just for the effort of replying I would prefer authoritative responses, and here again, individuals have (as often as support reps) given accurate answers.  Simply stated once more I would like to know "When I need to upgrade my daughters phone In AUGUST, from a basic phone to a smart phone will verizon allow me to purchase the phone upgrade AND add 2gb data package for 30$". There would seem to be no ambiguity in the question, however in the face of opposing answers it just defies logic . The ONLY reason I am confused is because verizon reps have at been odds with each other. Documents are more reassuring and if anyone can offer links I would appreciate it. I have even considered acquiring a phone from outside vzw but had been told even that avenue would not allow me to add a data package to my EXISTING account. Truth oh truth how illusive thou be.
P.S. strictly for the sake of discussion, I will say that my viewpoint of the low quality of VZW customer service reflects this and other instances of inaccurate and false answers from this company. They just get it wrong too much to have a high rating from me even though others may have had different experiences.

    http://solutions.vzwshop.com/shareeverything/?intcmp=VZW-VNT-SE-PLANRECMND
Scroll down to "tell me more". Last question. "I have an unlimited data plan on my account. Do I need to change it?"
"You're not required to move to Share Everything but if you do, unlimited data will not be retained on your line. As a Verizon Wireless customer you have choices when you upgrade at discounted pricing. You can choose from a standalone data package starting at $30 for 2GB or a Share Everything Plan. If keeping unlimited is important to you, you can choose to upgrade and pay full retail price for the phone."
I imagine that this would be the same as upgrading a basic phone to a smart phone. You can add a data package to the line you are upgrading (that it currently does not have) and it won't affect the unlimited on your Droid's line(s). It's only when you try to upgrade the lines that currently have unlimited that you won't be able to keep the unlimited data. You can choose to move everybody on the plan to a shared data plan, or move to a tiered data plan. You just can't keep unlimited when you upgrade at a discounted price.

  • Trying to upgrade..Getting conflicting answers..Afraid of a billing surprise

I have made a few contacts to Verizon Wireless, in-store and over the phone.  I am getting conflicting answers.
I am trying to upgrade from a Nationwide (Unlimited Data Plan) to More Everything.
(Q1) There is a promotion "$100 bill credit when you purchase a new smartphone on Edge"
I am an existing customer, upgrading a device.  I was told by a phone representative yesterday that there is a promotion from 9/22-10/31 which offers the bill credit to upgrades.  Is this true?  The latest deals on VerizonWireless says "Upgrades are excluded".
(Q2) My primary reservation about More Everything is monthly line access charge for basic phones.
      - AT&T offers a Basic line for $15/line.
      - Verizon offers a Basic line for $30/line.
Yesterday, I was told by a phone representative that they can offer a $10/month credit for my basic lines.
Today, I was told by a store representative that they cannot offer such a credit as my basic lines are under contract.
I want to convert to More Everything.  I want to add additional data devices on my account.  But - I do not know what to trust - I am afraid I am going to get a billing surprise on a new plan.

    >> Using Edge and getting a discount upgrade are two different things.
I understand Edge vs. discount upgrade/subsidized device.  I am asking specifically about Edge.  Whether a $100 bill credit promotion exists for existing customers.
Website says add-a-line, new-lines of service only ("Upgrades are excluded")
CSR indicated existing customers who add an Edge device are eligible.. Is this true under a newer/different promotion?
I understand the smartphone, line-fee discounts.
The question is specifically related to basic-phone discounting.  Are there any offers to make the basic-phone competitive with AT&T ($15/line).
CSR indicated they could offer a $10/month discount
Store representative said basic phones under contract are not eligible.

  • ICal lost end dates and ∞ sync conflicts after iOS4 upgrade

After upgrading my sacrificial iPod 3 (I’m waiting to upgrade my main iPhone 3GS) and synchronizing it to my home MacBook Pro 2007 17", I got huge numbers of old repeating meeting which seem to have lost their end-date, e.g., “Palm-size PC Porting Lab” on June 28th this millennium, which I assure you is an error. I restored from a desktop backup, overwrote the iOS4 Calendar data, and synced again.
After that, I had a miserable day full of a dozen or so Resolve Sync Conflicts dialogs—sometime three or four in a row after a single, very slow, sync. Several times two sync processes used up all my real memory (using over a gigabyte, out of three) and once it even used up all my disk space (I had 29G free). I also had a few rounds of conflict on my work MacBook Pro 2009 13", synced via MobileMe.
Some historical notes: My calendar data is quite large, going back to Newton days via PalmOS, and iPhone OS 3 never handled it properly, e.g., both search and over-the-air sync are broken on my 3.1.3 iPhone. MobileMe sync data also gets corrupted every few weeks. And “Palm-size PC” was Microsoft’s court-ordered renaming of their trade-mark infringing Palm PC.
    Macaulay‘s Law of Software Upgrades:
“To think nothing of symmetry and much of convenience; never to remove an anomaly merely because it is an anomaly; never to innovate except when some grievance is felt; never to innovate except so far as to get rid of the grievance.”

Deleting my caches per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2481, and restoring and rebooting a couple of times, seems to have shut up the warnings, at least for now, but there's still some data loss, e.g., two meetings on 6/21 and 6/22 don't show up any more on my main Mac, but do show up on both my sacrificial iOS4 iPod, and my real 3.1.3 iPhone. (I’m also having trouble with a Note failing to sync from my iPad, but I haven’t tried that yet since nuking my caches.)

  • ERROR in ADD-ON conflict phase while upgrading ECC 6.0 system

    Hi all,
I am having ECC 6.0 system and am upgrading its SAP-APPL component to 603 patch level 03. I was having SAP-APPL 603 but at patch level 0, i checked for all dependencies and defined the queue in SPAM and it showed all green (OK) for SAP-APPL and so i started but i faced error in add-on coflict phase. It said CRT needed for ADD-ON FICAX release 603. I searched alot but i cant find it on market place. This conflict occured for SAP-APPL 603 patch level 01 it said either include CRT as mentioned above or remove SAP-APPL 60301. Please help me out.

The conflict check detected conflicts between the Add-On FI-CAX release 603 and the OCS Package SAPKH60301.
The conflict check detected conflicts between the Add-On FI-CAX release 603 and the OCS Package SAPKH60302.
The conflict check detected conflicts between the Add-On FI-CAX release 603 and the OCS Package SAPKH60303.
Check the support packs of components FI-CAX on Service Market place, I think FI-CAX is dependant on SAPKH603301 and others so you can check the import condidtions of FI-CAX on service marketplace and update FI-CAX first then only you would be able to update patch of SAPKH60301

  • Why can you NOT get a straight forward answer on upgrading to Edge?

On Saturday morning I called customer care with a SIMPLE question about how the Edge Program works. The lady I spoke with gave me information that didn't make sense and told me one of my lines could move to edge and the other could only after 6 months of on-time payments. That didn't make sense to me, how could one be eligible and not the other when the explanation of WHEN would be eligible is contingent upon 6 months payments. I was so irritated I started shopping at other carriers to see what their "Edge" like programs work like and was considering switching carriers. So, I called back and spoke with another guy to find out what my ETF's were and he informed me that I COULD upgrade both lines to a Note 4 for about $5 above what my bill is a mo. each with all of the discounts applied. I told him that I would go to a Verizon store and probably upgrade instead of cancelling. So, I went to the store and was treated TERRIBLY!! I was told that I could not move both of my lines to the edge program with the Note 4. I was told I could move to Edge with both lines but one would have to be a Droid and the other could be whatever phone I wanted. I was blown away with yet another piece of information that was not matching up with what I was told. He said I could call customer care and see if they could do anything. I was BLOWN away that a corporate Verizon store would just turn me away (which was extremely demeaning and embarrassing in front of their other customers) to call customer care again and tell me my best option would be to cancel if I wanted a new phone for the line I wanted to upgrade. So, I called customer care again and spoke with another lady who correctly informed me (I think) of how it works and stated there was nothing she could do on the line that was not eligible which should have been told in the previous conversation with the guy I spoke with. One thing struck me as odd, she said the phone is on a lease with Edge so the phone is never yours, which is something NO ONE mentioned at any point in any prior conversation. So, is that true? I now know where I stand with upgrading but my original questions about how Edge works are still not fully answered and what the last rep stated brings up other questions. If it's "leased" what happens if it's broken or lost? Anyway, I was looking for what I thought was a straight forward answer to a question about how Edge works, how much it costs, and are my lines eligible, etc. and wasted a good hour on the phone and another two driving to a store just to get turned away like as though no one even cared! The last lady I spoke with seemed to care but I'm blown away with the TERRIBLE customer service and COMPLETE lack of ownership. Why can no one take the feedback and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT and then answer my questions about the Edge program. Bottom line, I'm not looking for a freebie upgrade (though maybe I should for all of the time wasted due to incorrect/inaccurate information). but I'm blown away that no one wants to do anything.
That all being said, can someone on here explain how Edge works with the discounts and is the phone really a "leased" phone? Pretty sad that I'm resorting to forums to ask other customers how it works but would appreciate any info anyone can share. I'm probably going to port both of my numbers to AT&T if it is true they are a lease and due to all of the terrible customer service.

I just saw in another post that if it's an "early" edge I would have to turn in the phones. No one told me that either and now I wonder if just forget Edge and port out. What's the advantage of doing Edge with all this confusion and red tape? Is an early edge considered early if you're upgrading with Edge prior to the contract end on the current phone? Verizon Customer Care and Stores REALLY NEED to be up front about this stuff! From what I see here and what others are going through Edge is a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE program.

  • How much RAM can I put in my new MacBook Pro 313 2.4 Ghz I5 13.1"? I'm getting conflicting answers on Google search.

I just bought my first Mac after years of deliberation, and even working for Apple for over seven years since moving to the Bay Area. I can't believe I waited this long!!! I love it!
My owner's manual says I can only put, "PC3-10600S DDR3 1333 MHz Type RAM"
It also says I can only add two 4GB memory modules for a maximum 8 GB of memory. Yet, a website that gaurantee's fitament says I can use two 8 GB modules that are PC3-10600 (no "S" on the end) DDR3 etc... for a maximum of 16 GB. I only want to beef this thing up once, so can someone with more knowledge than me please help me out concerning this. And if possible, could you post a link to the actual memory?
    TIA!!!

Yes, it is a little confusing. If your MacBook Pro is brand new, the limit is 16GB.

8GB as designed by Apple: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs-13inch.html
Yes, but that is only because 8GB was the chip set available when they designed it. But there have been many times in Mac history when the Mac worked perfectly well with bigger chips released after the product launch. In the case of the MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM has been verified by pro users who have upgraded to 16GB without problems.
mhollman, here is the link to the actual memory. The company selling them has an excellent reputation as a supplier of Mac upgrades, I buy mine there.

Here is a reputable Mac blogger reporting the advantages of 16GB RAM, if your jobs are big enough to benefit.

The first time I went beyond Apple spec was with the PowerBook G3, 12 years ago. Apple specced 512MB RAM, but months later it was found that the PowerBook worked fine with the new 1GB RAM kits and I ran it that way for years.
Not all models can take more RAM than originally specced, but as long as you wait for the tests to come in and say it's fine, it's fine.

  • Looking for an Answer About Upgrading

    Hello Droid Friends,
I am looking to upgrade from a Samsung 510 still on the Alltel network, to the Incredible and I am still a bit worried I don't have all the answers I need. I have talked to 3 different associates and have had totally different answers. I am currently sharing a plan with someone and we both want the upgrade since our previous contract is up and has been up for quite a few months now. I spoke with a Verizon Associate on an in store visit and asked if there is any possible way we could keep our current Alltel promotion which was one of the last that Alltel was doing before Verizon bought them. Its the Friends and Family 10 (1000 Minutes and Texts shared between 2 lines). The Associate I spoke with said it was possible to keep that and upgrade to new devices the only addition is the $29.99 data package per phone. I want to know if there has been anyone who had the same package I currently have and has had a succesful upgrade to the Incredible without picking new minutes and texts separately. If anyone has any information they could share with me about this topic, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have noticed that Wal-Mart carries Verizon phones and since newer phones are often more expensive and considering how everything we buy has gone up in price, I wanted to get the best bargain I can. I have considered going to them to get an upgrade. Rather than spending about $300 for two phones I could spend about $75 and get the same thing. I have watched quite a few people walk in and walk out of Wal-Mart with new phones and it takes just about as long to do the switch. If anyone in the community has gone that route I'd really like to hear about it as well.
Thank You for you opinions and advice.

if you go anyplace other then verizon, they will ask you to pick a current vzw plan.  they dont have the same option that vzw has.
you will then have to change it back.  if its an alltell plan the chance of going back to it is no very good
yes you payless at places other then vzw for hardware, but they cant do things like verizon can
what i do since i have a verizon promoplan is to call cs and do my transactions through them.
yes im paying more for the hardware, but the $40 a month i save on service makes it worth it
i would attempt it this way.  if they say you cant keep the plan, hang up and try a diff csr

    1. Where can I find a detailed step by step of what to do before/during/after install? ( i have a bootable backup already)
    My FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
    2. will I loose my iweb internet site?
Not if you archive and install and save user settings and your system is healthy. There is no guarantee your system is healthy, which is why you made a bootable backup.
    3. do I need to de-authorize my itunes account before install?
    No.
    4. How/can I bring my mail messages into the new mail......
They will not move as long as you save user and network preferences.

  • Simple Answer - Will upgrading to Lion Break my Bootcamp Install?

I'm running Snow Leopard. I have an IMac with a 1TB Drive - I have 800Gig for Mac and 200 Gig Partioned for Windows through Bootcamp(Win 7)
I want to download and upgrade my Mac OS to Lion. I've read through a ton of posts on issues to do with reinstalls etc; but I jut need to know if I upgrade to Lion, will I also have to redo my Bootcamp as well?
    I plan to back up everything anyway, but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall all the Windows programs I use etc;
I'm not a tech geek so I'm just trying to figure out how complicated this install would be. If I didn't have bootcamp, I'd just do it, but getting Bootcamp installed and running the first time was a chore and I don't want to have to do it again, especially now that I have a Windows partition full of programs and data.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks for this. Makes perfect sense and this is the type of answer I was looking for. I could simply move a bunch of data off the MAc Paritition to make sure that there is enough HD Space. Looking at it now I have 188Gigs Free so I should be ok.
The other question would be, I have Bootcamp 3.02 now I think. I would have to upgrade this to 4.0 with Lion as I understand it? This would have to be done after the Lion upgrade?
Thanks so much for the help.

Any ideas? Do I have to remove something?

I ended up renaming my compiled directory and running pacman -Syu again.. seems to have worked.  Hope there are no ill effects on reboot..

As per Serene's Advice I have called Tech Support, Sales, and a Local Levono Repair/Service  facility.
All three of them told me
As long as the Ram isnt causing any issues your warrenty is ok. If there are an issue to were you would have to send it in, you must reinstall the original Ram back into the laptop before Levono Recives it.
So who is Right who is wrong, Even after I told them that the U310 has a Warrenty sticker they all said it was still ok.
Is there anything in writing about this?

    Hi:
You will not void the warranty by installing memory from any vendor.
The only way you will void the warranty is if you physically damage the memory slot, plastic cover, or do not follow the procedures in the service manual to install the memory (like removing the battery and A/C power before working inside your notebook.
I have used Patriot, G.Skill, Mushkin, Kingston, Crucial in HP notebooks and desktop PC's all with great success.
I can also tell you that HP does not use Micron chips exclusively in their PC's.
Question...why do you want to remove a perfectly good 4 GB memory module unless they put a PC3-1333 chip in there and you want to install 2 PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) memory?
One other question?  If that is the case, why go half way?
I would just max the thing out to its 16 GB capacity and buy 2 x 8 GB of PC3-1600 (PC3-12800) , memory modules.
The specs page is incorrect regarding the 8 GB maximum.
Please see the service manual at the link below, chapter 1, page 4.
