Conflicting info on which version needed for G4

First, thanks to all the frequent posters here. I'm very impressed by the knowledge in this forums. I've learned a lot, but still haven't found my solution.
I ordered a processor upgrade for the G4 (Sawtooth). The instructions say to first update the firmware to 4.2.8, if necessary. I'm supposed to check the current version by using Apple System Profiler after booting into OS9. I bought this 'puter used, with 10.2.8 installed, and no OS9 installed. I've never used OS9.
I did get a gray "PowerMac G4 Software Install SSW version 9.0" CD with the purchase. When I tried to boot from that, I get a welcome screen, and when the progress bar gets to about 15%, the process simply stops. (The CD drive has been replaced with a DVD RW, if that might matter.) Now, an Apple article (120068) regarding the firmware upgrade says to use 9.1. But, I just want to boot into 9 to check the current firmware version, not update it (yet). From what I've read here, I thought this machine should be bootable by 9.0. I even ran across an Apple table somewhere here stating the multiple versions of 9 that were permissible for this G4, including 9.0. (I almost suspect that the update has already been done by the previous owner, as he was a savvy user, and did A/V production with it. It's also been working under Tiger flawlessly.)
I also tried dragging a copy of the 9.0 system folder onto my secondary HD, which shows to have the OS9 drivers installed. This was bad news trying to boot this way. A message said it could only boot from the original media (the CD, no?), and it got locked into a loop. Got out by booting with Option pressed, thanks to a tip read here
So, is there another way to check the firmware rev without obtaining 9.1? I visited a site recommended in here for system CDs and found a retail 9.1 offered, but for $160 (yikes!). I really have no need to use 9 in the future, having no software for it, I just need to boot it to check the firmware rev.
Suggestions? Thanks for your time!!!

Hi, rotordude -
There is a way to check the firmware version (Boot ROM version) without having to trust the accuracy of the software in OSX or OS 9.
Boot the machine into Open Firmware - restart; immediately press the Command-Option-O-F keys, keep that combo held down. The machine will quickly boot into Open Firmware, which is coded on the logic board, not on any disk.
You will be presented with a text-based screen. On the second line will be this string -
    Apple PowerMac3,1 #.#.#f# Boot ROM
The "PowerMacc3,1" portion will identify it as being a G4 (AGP), aka "Sawtooth", model.
The "#.#.#f# Boot ROM" will have numbers replacing the "#" character - this shows the current firmware version.
For example, on that line in Open Firmware my G4 (AGP) displays
    Apple PowerMac3,1 4.1.8f5 Boot ROM
indicating the firmware version is 4.1.8, which I know to be correct - I have applied the 4.1.8 firmaware update (now no longer available), but not yet the 4.2.8 firmware update (I do not have OSX 10.2 or later on this machine).
To get out of Open firmware, enter exit at the prompt and press Return; or enter boot at the prompt and press Return; or use the force restart button on the front of the Mac (the small raised-face button under the power button, the left-hand one of the two small buttons).
It has been reported by some users that once the firmware on their machine was updated, it would no longer boot to the original OS (non-OSX) version that shipped with the machine. Based upon comments, though, this does not appear to be a universal result of updating firmware.
Take a close look at the "PowerMac G4 Software Install SSW version 9.0" CD that you got with the machine. What is the part number shown in small print on the right-hand side of the label? The diskl that came with my G4 (AGP) shows this info at that location -
    SSW version 9.0.4
    691-2657-A
- and the CD is titled in large print "PowerMac G4" with a sub-titled "Software Install".

  • Windows 7 - which version needed for Palm to work?

I think perhaps I understand the answers, but please tell me if I have this worked out correctly. I have a Palm M515, so no bluetooth or wifi.
    1. I want a 32 bit system on one machine. I think I can simply install Windows 7 Home Premium, install Palm Desktop V4.1 and everything will work fine just as it does under Vista. I sync using USB or serial. Is that right?
    2. I want a 64 bit system on another machine. I know Palm don't support 64 bit. However reading the Microsoft pages if I buy Windows 7 Pro it provides support for the Windows XP Virtual Machine. I assume the virtual machine can be 32 bit? So if I install that then I believe I can install the Palm software (I'm on V4.1) and also use USB to synchronise. Is that right? Has anyone tried it? Have Palm themselves tried it yet?
These seem to me crucial questions for many users as 64 bit system become common. Do Palm read these forums, I can find nothing about this on their website?

I have a fix that works fine for me. I bought a cheap PC that came with 64 bit home premium, and I am considering rolling it to 32 bit pro but until then, I have installed Vmware Player - a free app that will run in 64 bit Win 7.
I migrated my old Windows XP system to this platform, and have been very pleasantly surprised by how well USB works on it (I have a lot of VMware experience from server 1.x, server 2.x, ESX 3 and 4 - this is a real leap ahead.)  I am able to sync to the Palm desktop in the virtual XP very nicely, and Mobipocket works there as well.  Since no one is suggesting that XP mode from Windows is worth a try, I have to assume that the Windows virtualization platform is not as complete.  This does not surprise me.
Now that I know the palm desktop may install in Win 7, I have a migration path for the data, but to be honest, so much of my day-to-day work requires that I have access to a working 32 bit install that I use the VM OS a lot of the time.
By the way, it may be harder to 64 bit drivers for Windows than you think.  The key app for me is a Cisco IPSEC vpn client.  I have seen a purported beta of the application for 64 bit systems but don't trust it.
Given how much $$$ a Cisco house spends on hardware and licenses, and how huge Cisco is, if Cisco can't pull its head out and deal with this, I can hardly blame Palm.

  • I am able to get color images in the continues shot but when i try to snap a color image which i need for my processing i get only a monocrome image

I have been using lv_vfw.llb VI's for grabbing images from a CREATIVE WEB CAM ,i am able to get color images in the continues shot but when i try to snap a color image which i need for my processing i get only a monocrome image ,i have been trying to play around with the RGB weightings but i am unable to get a color iamge,it shall be of great help if you could help me in doing this as it is urgent for me.Thanks for your help.

    vicky,
I am unfamiliar with the lv_vfw.llb, and have not used it before. However, I noticed that you stated that you are able to grab in color, just not snap in color. If this is the case, why not just perform a grab and then extract a single buffer from this grabbed data, which would likely be in color? This seems like a possible solution to the issue that you are seeing.
Other than that, I really don't know enough about the lv_vfw.llb to be of much help on this issue. Hopefully another member of this forum will be able to assist you with this software.

  • My iPod is up to a 4.1 ios, and it won't update to a 5.1 which I need for some of my apps for school. It keeps saying that my internet connection is bad; but, it works just fine. What do I need to do?

My iPod is up to a 4.1 ios, and it won't update to a 5.1 which I need for some of my apps for school. It keeps saying that my internet connection is bad; but, it works just fine. What do I need to do?

If you get a network timeout error, then disabling the computer's security software duirng the download and update usually resovles that error.
If that is not the error what is the wording of the error message.
Note that only a 3G or 4G iPod can go to iOS 5.  A 2G iPod can only go to iOS 4.2.1

  • Which version lightroom for non-intel mac 10.5.8

Which Version of Lightroom works best with a (non-Intel) Mac 10.5.8?  Thank You.

There is none that Adobe will sell you.  They only supply the most recent version:  LR 5, which requires 10.7.5, I think.  Sometimes you can get the previous version, i.e. LR 4, on Amazon but sometimes those are just scams, too, so you want to make sure you’re buying from Amazon, themselves, not an Amazon-Marketplace vendor.
To your specific question about what version is compatible with 10.5.8, if you go to the Adobe page for LR Mac updates:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=113 <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=113&platform=Macintosh> &platform=Macintosh
and click down into the past versions, it appears that LR 3.6 from 12/12/2011, will run on OSX 10.5 but LR 4.x will not, so I don’t think you’ll have much luck with such an old OS.

  • R&R version needed for "selective" software recovery?

The version of R&R that came on my machine is 4.0.   Is it true what I've read that updating to a later version will allow a recovery  to factory state however I will get the options to NOT install the bloatware e.g. Norton, MSOffice trial, etc?
If so, what version of R&R  do I need for this function?   I've read a number of posts that seem to be indicating the v4.2 is causing other issues and would like to know others experience.
    Thanks in advance

There is a second sticky thread titled with 'ITS FAQ...'. Also interesting - indeed.

  • How do I install a foxit button on my tool bar? I recently upgraded to the latest version, but my tool bar does not contain a firefox button which is need for certain tasks, such as private browsing.

I had an existing laters 3 point whatever version of Firefox and recently upgraded to Firefox 10. This new version still has the old toolbar across the top, but there is no "Firefox button" which one has to use to activate certain action such as "private browsing." Is there anyway I can install the button on the toolbar, or is there a way to change to the new version 10 interface which includes the Firefox Button. I would prefer the former (the old configuration with the tool bar on top, but if that cannot be done, how to I migrate to the new configuration which apparently puts the tools on the side, if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks for any help you can provide. I have Windows XP.

If you have the old fashioned toolbar, you can still go into Private browsing by clicking Tools, then "Start Private Browsing". All the options that are in the Firefox button are in the old style toolbar, just maybe a little more hidden.
To enable te Firefox button, go into View, then Toolbars, then uncheck "Menu Bar". You should have the Firefox button.

  • Execute Teststand as windows-user: which files needed for write-access

    Hello,
which files/directories do i have to set for write access?
    Normally windows-administrator can access everything.
But a windows-user has for example no write-acces to teststand\Cfg.
So sometimes i get the error-message that a file is write protected.
Is this somewhere explained in the TS-documentation that also a windows-user need write-access? I have this question from a client and i am not sure how exactly it is.
    Thx for info
Message Edited by OnlyOne on 07-10-2009 05:36 AM

    Hi OnlyOne,
With TestStand 4.1 and later, we changed the directories for the TestStand Cfg folder and the TestStand Public folder (formerly called the TestStand Users Directory). These changes allow a normal Windows-User to write to the TestStand Cfg and Public folders without having to specifically grant write permissions.

  • [Best Practices] Which versioning strategy for the web applications?

    Hi all,
An important question when starting to develop a web application is how to correctly make the releases follow-up?
That involves to adopt a versioning strategy to definitely fix the version numbers which will be associated to each release.
The versioning strategy i have imagined is based on four different numbers with format like v.X.X.X.X:
       - The first one represents the version number of the database structure.
       - The second number is linked to the different finalized releases of the data model layer.
       - The third number concerns the different releases of the interfaces
       - And finally, the last number is the Subversion (or other code control system) last save. This strategy involves:
       - The subversion number is systematically reported
       - Changes on the database will affect both the data model layer and the interfaces; also, among the three first numbers only the first one will have to change.
       - Changes made on the data model level automatically involve a new interfaces release and will also be represented on the second number and not on the third.
       - Finally, bring some changes only on the interfaces level will affect the third and the fourth numbers only.My questions are:
       1) Is my choice correct?
       2) Maybe it already exists some versioning convention?
       3) What is your strategy?
       4) What is the strategy for the Jdeveloper versions?Best regards,
    Tif

I would like people to be able to watch it in a flash player embedded on my site (and have it look good even if they click on a full screen button) or download to their iPod.
Use the H.264 setting for iPod in Compressor. The h.264 file will play in a JW Flash Player and it's able to be downloaded for iPod viewing.

  • Which Computer needed for High Def video

I purchased a Panasonic HDC-TM900 High def camcorder and don't have enough computer power to edit the video. Which computer or how much processor power do I need.
    thanks

    Hmm....
what software did the camera come with?
What does the manual/documentation say for computer requirements?
Yes, I do encourage i7 or quad-core for best performance
Budget a few hundred gigabytes of hard drive space for render space for hour long projects
    I like 7200rpm drives
If you are getting paid for your work, don't hesistate to double or triple your budget.
Have you considered a high-end gaming laptop to showcase your work or work right at your clients?  I do my work on a gaming laptop and it's much more rewarding to showcase my work and make edits on the spot with a client.
Again your camera is capable of 3D.  Don't limit your hardware to 2D.
    With regards to software
I like Pinnacle Studio for raw performance and excellent interface when I'm trimming clips.
I like Avid Studio for Picture and Picture.  Pinnacle is limited to 2 video streams.
I like Corel VideoStudio Ultimate (still learning it) for 3D support
Seriously research and look for a local demonstation of Matrox MXO2.  If you are making money on your projects, being able to render and post your videos with the shortest amount of time with make you more attractive to a client.  It also frees up your personal time.
Panasonic's camera is still kinda new, you are going to need to research if products identified supports your camera.

  • Newbie Help - Which Version needed?

    Hello all,
I am an experinced windows programmer looking to develop a java client application that will be used in windows 98, windows XP, Mac OSX, and Mac OS9. What version of Java should I consider using? What are some of the things I need to consider in order to deploy the JVM and any components to these clients? Thanks

I am an experinced windows programmer looking to
develop a java client application that will be used
in windows 98, windows XP, Mac OSX, and Mac OS9. What
version of Java should I consider using?Whichever you like. :) If you have some more specifications about what you need to do, 1.5 might have a few more features you'd like to use, but 1.4.2 is a little less complicated to learn (no Generics et al.). 1.6 seems to have pretty good desktop integration and installers, but it's not yet fully released. You might want to look at that as well. Grab the API docs for each from this website (all are JSE/J2SE JDKs) and hve a look at the "what's new" section in the overview.
    What are
some of the things I need to consider in order to
deploy the JVM and any components to these clients?
ThanksThe license agreement, though that's not much of a problem. The licenses and the libs of the 3rd party software you might be using. Also, you might want to look at the distribution mechanism and might want to consider something web-based like Webstart.

  • Which Drivers Needed for SATA setup

I'm having a new Western Digital SE SATA 200GB HDD installed tomorrow(Tuesday).
So far I've located the Nvidia floppy for SATA RAID.
I've noticed that there is a downloadable file of 487KB that does the same thing.
What I need to know is....will the floppy start me off: ie can I use  it to install after I hit the F6 button.
If not I can easilly download the file onto a floppy I have ready.
I appreciate that some of the moderators may be busy, or otherwise occupied but since it is 10.02pm here and almost near kip time , a reply before then would be worth its weight in gold
    Thanks

He is right Charlie.  This is some further info.
Here is how to install Windows on a SATA boot drive: (This procedure has been used by many including my self to solve the same problem.)
    - Have only the SATA drive you want to be the boot drive in your system.  Disconnect the power to all other HDD's if any.
    -  Have only one optical drive. Disconnect the power to the other optical if any.
    -  Plug SATA drive into SATA 1  (it may show us as an IDE drive somewhere down the list in BIOS.  That's okl)
    -  Enable appropriate SATA options in BIOS.  Set boot order to floppy, cd, SATA drive.  Set boot priority to SATA drive.
    -  Partition and format using the utilites CD that came with the SATA drive.  (copy any files you need from this drive to a back up drive)
    -  Run Windows setup.  No need to do the F6 thing unless you are planning to do a RAID configuration.
    -  Windows should install just fine
    -  After you are up and running, plug power back into your other drives if any.
I hope this works for you.
