Conflicting swatch colors

Help! I have a question about colors. I'm working on a number of files in which one of the colors have technically changed, however the name of the color has to stay the same. I open a previous file, with the old color (a spot color), and open up a new swatch palette, with the new color (also a spot). Now, the old color and the new color are named the same, so when I click the element that needs to change, and click the new color, nothing happens, because it sees that it "already has that color in the (standard) swatch palette". I see two ways around this, but both seem less than efficient: 1 - I could rename the new/replacement color, so that the program sees it as different. Unfortunately, for me, this is not an option, as it's a company color and the naming convention needs to remain the same. 2 - I could open up the original color in the swatch palette and manually remix it to the new/replacement color, but this seems rather tedious. Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of a way around this issue? Thanks in advance!
Ben

Definitely works on a Mac perhaps it is just a Mac feature and it doesn't have to be a spot color or global. But if it is a global or spot color that is good because the art will update as well.

  • How Do I Mass Search and Replace Swatch Colors In Entire Indesign CS6 Document?

    I've jumped from CS4 to CS6 and its been a little while since, but just trying to refamiliarize myself with the many Features of Indesign CS6.
    Here's my issue: I have a really old CS4 document I've opened up and saved in CS6. I have to change all swatch colors throughout the document from pantone swatch 295 C to updated pantone swatch 293 C.
    Question, without my having to go through the entire document one object at a time looking for each object, HOW do i perform a Mass search and replace of Color swatch references from 295 C to 293C.
    I thought i could just click swatch properties and update the color... but No... that doesnt work as swatch properties is just grayed out
    I'm sure i've overlooked something but a refresher on how to mass find and replace color in a document would be great.
    Thanks and looking forward to hearing from someone.

    Thanks for the tips.... both seem like good options without my having to purchase a 3rd party software to accomplish this...
    I must admit... Because I've been stuck in Web Design and Motion Graphics for the past couple of years, when I re-opened my old print work from the CS4 days into CS6 it is obvious I have some catch up to do....
    I was almost embarrassed to admit I had forgotten the technique of Alias one color to another using Ink Manager... I had to look it up and found this helpful tutorial http://indesignsecrets.com/alias-one-color-swatch-to-another.php
    Thanks for both solutions....

  • How to get active document  swatch color and its value

    Hi
    i want to get the swatch color of active document
    i use 3 to 4 colors both cmyk and pantone which is in swatches
    now i want to get their values using script
    any one please help me
    Thank you
    Appu

    Download the script "Render Swatch Legend" from the following site: http://www.wundes.com/JS4AI/
    This script generates a legend of rectangles for every swatch in the main swatches palette. You should be able to grab the code you need from this.

  • How to get swatch color changes to update in gradients?

    When I drop a swatch color on a gradient, it doesn't link to the swatch color like in a solid fill.
    Nevermind the UI inconsistency with this behavior, since Adobe probably doesn't care, but how do I get around this?
    Creating a Swatch from the gradient is not a solution for me, as I use the same base color in different gradients.
    Thank you!

    Thank you!
    For some reason now, however, the gradient display in the document has disappeared so I can't move it or create an ellipse... but maybe I should post that as a separate question.

  • Setting fillcorlor to one of my swatch colors

    Is it possible to script the following. I would like to change my fillcolor to one of my swatch colors. I already know how to read the swatch names but i can asign them to my fillcolor.... please help...

    Do you want to set the fillColor of say, a path item to the color of a swatch

    aPathItem.fillColor = swatchToUse.color;
    Is that what you are trying to do?

  • Changing Swatch color in a doc with no effect on other docs

    I have a book containing multiple docs. I am using a color swatch, that I called "Chapter color". I used this swatch to distinguish the color of each doc (chapter). However, once I synchronize the book, all the docs retain the swatch color of the main doc (chapter 1), though I have deselected "Swatches" from >Synchronize Options. Pls HELP.

    Lets go back for a moment. I don't mean to insult you at all, I just want to make sure we are all understanding each other correctly, and understanding what should be happening, and what is actually happening.
    During synchronization, IF the option to include swatches IS checked, all document should wind up with the following: Any swatches with the same name as a swatch in the source document should be redefined to match the source. In addition, any other swatches from the source document, which are not already present in other documents, should be added to those documents. Additional swatches in other documents which don't appear in the source document should be unaffected.
    From your description it sounds to me as if the option to synchronize swatches is really checked, not blank, so you should go back to verify that you have cleared the checkbox. As I mentioned above, if swatches are synchronizing should be able to bypass the problem by using a unique name in each document. As long as that name does not also appear in the source document it should remain unaffected. I'm suggesting that each document have its own swatch, uniquely named and not shared, for that element. You can accomplish this by just renaming the swatch.
    If there is still a problem, my only conclusion is there is something wrong with your InDesign installation. What build, and what localized version of ID are you using? You can find the build number by opening the Help menu, then holding the CTRL key while you select About InDesign. The build will be in parentheses after the version number in the upper left corner of the dialog that should open.

  • Gradients with only selected swatch colors...

    I have a Swatch preset with special colors that has a purpos in a game. In order to create game graphics I need to be able to do gradients with only a group of selected swatch colors, without photoshop creating "new" colors in between these.
    Is this possible? If not is there a workaround?

    You could use the Gradient Editor to construct special gradients that would have two stops for each color, with one being at almost the same location as the one to the left, and the other, almost the same location as the one to the right. There will still be a tiny gradient, but you can get rid of that with Posterize.

  • Is there a way to change a swatch color globally in the psd document?

    Hi there,
    I often use a photoshop template to create work and was wondering id there was a way to select all items that use a particular swatch color and change them to another swatch color? Right now, I have to find each instance I use that particular color and change them one by one to the new color and was trying to find a better way to do this.
    Thanks!

    There's a slim chance that Image > Mode > Indexed Color may help you but the mode has many limitations which will probably make it unsuitable for your work. When doc is indexed colour, use Image > Mode > Color Table to change colours throughout doc.

  • How Apply Paper Swatch color on page

    Hi Experts
    I want to apply Paper Swatch color on page.
    I try this to set Paper Swatch color but not sucess.
    #target indesign
    var myDocument = app.documents.add();
    var myPages = myDocument.pages;
    var myPage = myPages.item(0);
    var swatchclr=app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName("Paper").properties = {space:ColorSpace.RGB, model:ColorModel.PROCESS};
    swatchclr.colorValue=[255,150,0];
    There is no change in Paper Swatch color value.
    How apply this color on page ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Watch this line ("=" repeated):
    swatchclr       =       app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName("Paper").properties      =     {space:ColorSpace.RGB, model:ColorModel.PROCESS};
    swatchclr.colorValue=[255,150,0];
    So swatchclr is a swatch.properties not a swatch.
    Make it:
    swatchclr       =       app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName("Paper");
    swatchclr.properties      =     {space:ColorSpace.RGB, model:ColorModel.PROCESS, colorValue:[255,150,0]};

  • Change swatch color inside swatch dialog box

    In other words, say you have a PMS 485 swatch loaded in your palette and you want to change that swatch to PMS 286, it would be nice if you could double click on the 485 swatch and change the color from a drop-down menu, etc.

    I've always done this with a Pantone colour guide at hand.
    So if you've got a swatch of Pantone 485 (CMYK=0.97.100.0), just double-click on the swatch to get the CMYK reading Alter the name to Pantone 286 and alter the CMYK values to 100.66.0.2. Then everything that was red 485 will change to blue 286.
    It's best not to import a new swatch of 286 while you have 485 running - if you do you will have to use Select Same Fill and Select Same Stroke and alter the colours from one swatch to the other with the accompanying danger of missing something.

  • Swatch color playing 'follow my leader'

    Hi.  I'm fairly new to Illustrator and am using it to design clothing. I'm using CS4 on a mac. I have a cd full of eps patterns which I want to incorporate into my designs, eg a flowery pattern on the collar and a stripe on the main body of the garment. I opened the eps file, selected all then hit 'define pattern'. Then I dragged the pattern window into the swatches panel. Because it had opened in a different document to my garment sketch, my pattern swatch wasn't showing up in the swatch panel on my garment sketch document, so I went back to the pattern document and hit 'save swatches' from the bottom of the swatch panel. Then, back in the garment document I hit 'open swatch library' and found my swatch in 'user defined'. I then used the swatch to live paint the relevant section of the garment. So far so good (except illustrator 'unexpectedly quit' several times while trying to save the swatch - how do I stop that happening?). Then I repeat the process to bring in the next pattern swatch, but the colors of the second pattern swatch go all wrong when I live paint fill the next section of the garment. They seem to be following the proportions of the first pattern swatch. Can anyone help - it's driving me crazy!
    Thanks

    Repair Permissions on a Mac I can tell you someone like Jacob or Mylenium or James Talmage would have to tell you about the Windows platform.
    On the Mac go to Applications?Utilities/Disk Utility and select your hard drive or start up disk the partition or disk you have your system installed on if you have more than one hard drive.
    then select first Aid in the dialog and select Verify Permissions and the n after that select Repair Permissions
    To check the scratch disk go to Illustrator in the Menu Bar and select Preferences and choose Scratch Disk. If you have more than one Hard drive  change the disk to anything other than the startup disk, if yiu only have one hard drive I suggest you get another drive you can use as a scratch disk or partition to make a scratch disk.
    I have several Hard drives and a RAID configuration internally. I crossed the names of the hard drives away.
    Scratch Disk selection (after you select a new scratch disk you have to quit and relaunch Illustrator in order for it to take effect.

  • How to change a swatch color without losing the "global" status

    Hiya Forum! AppleScripting-Newbie talking.
    For an automated EPS-export using AppleScript and Illustrator CS4 on a G5 Mac running Mac OS X I need to change a global swatch's color. It needs to go form black:75 to black:55 and remain global, thereby changing the color of all the path items in the document. It works very well with a doubleclick on the swatch.
    While changing the color seems to be quite trivial with "set properties of swatch to {color:{black:55}}", it then loses the global.
    All my beatiful boxes remain dark grey, looking awful and depressed.
    Please tell me there's a way to help me!
    Thank you very much!
    I hope I gave you all the information you may need. If I didn't please tell me so my next questions will be more accurate.

    Hi,
    I've had the same issue and I finally figured it out!
    I use Javascript.
    Global swatches are kept inside the active document as spot colors, so instead of swatches[i] you need to address spots[i].
    And then it works.

  • My Swatch colors disappears - how to always have them accessible?

    Hi! This is something basic I don't understand (I'm from the FreeHand world). Sometimes when doing artwork, when picking a color I just have None and Registration. The basic set of colors is gone and I can't figure out why. Is there a way to always be able to access them in every document?
    Another Q: In FreeHand I used to build a custom set of colors just for that document. From that central set I could drag and drop to my artwork and if I was to change all the pink rabbits that use my special made pink I just changed it in my color palett and all the rabbits was changed too. Is this possible in Illustrator?.
    I'm using Illustrator CS4.
    Regards / Jimmy

    Is there a way to always be able to access them in every document?
    Swatches are tied to the document template. Simply edit/ modify/ create your own new document templates and save them to the right location so they are readily available.

    Alt+drag the new swatch on the old swatch or use the Recolor Artwork tool in the Edit menu.

  • Any way to batch redefine named swatch colors in several AI documents?

    Greetings —
    I have a large number of book illustrations that all include two named swatches, Light Shadow and Dark Shadow, that need to be redefined to a new CMYK formula.
    I'm not looking forward to doing this by hand for all these files. Can this be done via actions or scripting?
    Thanks for any help you-all can provide!

    Hmmm... Well I wanted to mark both of your answers as correct, because they both work great, but it appears that the system will not allow you to do that...
    I tried both methods and they work like a charm! Thanks guys! I was actually trying something similar to what Steve suggested on my own, but I was trying it with the wrong pallete.. I was trying to drag colors and stops from the gradient pallette instead of the color palette. Either method will work great depending on what I want to do, one allows me to cherry pick certain colors and the other gets me everything fast. Thanks again guys for the thorough and effective answers!

  • Swatch colors from AI to ID

    I'm working on a project in IDCS3 and I need to use PMS colors specified in some AICS3 files. When I select load swatches in ID all the Illustrator files are grayed out! I can import from other ID files, but so what. I need the swatches from the AI files. I know I must be doing something wrong as this would be such a basic function for a "suite" of applications. Can anyone give me any advice?
