Conflicts with Drive Genius 3 and Mac Pro Tower?

I have been having problems with my MAC for about 7 months. Becomes unresponsive and I get HD disk errors when I run Disk Utility. The only way to repair is to use the Disk utility on my Snow Leopard Install disk. I have been trying to figure out what is going on, and the only thing I can come up with is that there may be a conflict with the Program Drive Genius 3. Has anybody had any similar issues?

your first course of action is to back up any and all data that you have, especially from the affected drive
then, its to ascertain wether the drive is failing or if the system is corrupted. (follow the advice in the other posts)
if the system is corrupted, you just need to reinstall the system (fresh)
if the drive is failing, you can keep the system, by cloning it to another drive. Drive genius does this with the duplicate function. (if you hear about superduper or CCCloner, they do this too)
in any and all cases, when all this is settled, you should have a cloned copy of a working system on another drive (or two). Every month (or few), reclone (backup) your system. When you are about to install a system update, say from 10.6.6 to 6.7, clone before, then update.
you can have multiple systems installed. Each one on its hard drive, or even ten systems on the same hard drive, each one in its own partition, (though if the drive fails, those multiples wont help, on the same drive. Plus, in order to clone, you need different drive. Im just saying its possible.) I use an old 300GB drive partitioned 6 ways, with different cloned instances of various systems. You can choose which system to boot from in the 'startup' pane in system preferences.
for example, when 10.7 Lion comes out, the worse thing you can do is to outright install on top of the existing system. A new system might not work in the beginning for various reasons, hardware or software conflicts, unupdated drivers, etc Before the kinks are worked out, a person might have to go back to a previous copy. Boy, am i sure glad i had that up to the minute clone . . .

  • Sony hard drive camcorder and mac pro

i have a sony hard drive style camcorder that uses a usb to download to a computer.will the mac pro support this if i use windows on it or is the usb still going to be a hang up?no editing needed, just want to get the movies on my mac instead of a pc.are there any programs that will let me use the usb port?

.would i be able to make it work if i install the program that came with it on the windows side of the mac pro?
you mean, you have bootcamp/parallels/etc on your Mac and want to use a Windows app to handle your camera?.. well, no hands on with Windows nor Bootcamp here...
Windows is a system of many (too many for me... ) options...- which usually needs 'drivers' for any connection to the real world outside the computer.. I mostly doubt, that the usb2 port is supported by a video-edit-app in a Windows app... as mentioned above, the 'computer' has to recognize your device as a harddrive, incl. all the 'protocols' which are needed to 'speak with each other'.. (= all that is implemented in firewire... usb = no standards for that = 'individual drivers'...)
but, why no givin' it a try...?
next problem: you're using Windows to import from your device.. and then? Windows asks for a fat32 formatted drive.. which iM doesn't support ...
besides, there's a 3rd party app for Mac, which supports mpeg2 editing:

  • Can I use Lion Server to sync files from my MBP and Mac Pro tower?

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro I'd like to sync files between. I also have a Mac Mini that I'm considering for an OS X Lion Server install if it could help sync all my files across computers. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

There is a simple way for unmanaged clients.
To point an unmanaged client to your update server, enter the following command in terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://<your_server>:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
(replace <your_server> with the dns name of your update server.  If the unmanaged client runs snowleopard or leopard, adjust the url accordingly. For snowleopard clients, remove the "lion-" part. For leopard clients, remove the "lion-snowleopard-" part

  • Wireless connection to internet with mac pro tower and airport extreme base station?

Hi, I have an airport extreme base station and a mac pro tower without a airport card. My internet wireless router is a great distance from my computer so I can't connect the base station directly to the router. I've attached the airport extreme base station to the tower via an ethernet cable, the base station seems to be wirelessly connected to the home network but the browser is showing "not connected".
    Please help.
    Thanks

Shouldn't the Airport base station be able to connect to it wirelessly?
It might be possible, but the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme would not be enabled, even if it did connect to the Thompson' WiFi signal.
As Tesserax notes, among the Apple routers, only the 802.11n versions of the AirPort Express have the capability to "join" a wireless network with the Ethernet port being enabled.

  • Can I download and use final cut pro 7 on new mac pro tower?,or I must work with the new final cut pro x only?

can I download and use final cut pro 7 on new mac pro tower?,or I must work with the new final cut pro x only?

Disclaimer: This response assumes that a "new mac pro tower" is the new cylindrical model.
    1. You cannot download Final Cut Pro 7. FCP7 is part of Final Cut Studio (2009) a.k.a "FCS3" and it was only released on a DVD set. It can still be purchased online (maybe even from Apple) for prices ranging from a few hundred to $1K and it is 5 years old and unsupported.
    2. Although there are reports of systems running FCS3 on Mavericks, there are also a host of problems associated with this OS/software combination.
    3. A new version of iMovie Pro Final Cut Pro X has been released which is reportedly very fast and is supported.
It's all a matter of what kind of movies you make...

  • Monitor goes dark on 2008 Mac Pro Tower with ATI Radeon 5870 Card

I have a 2008 Quad Core Intel Mac Pro Tower running 10.6.8.
The original graphics card had trouble with HD movies of any kind and eventually my screen would sometimes not turn on (stayed black) when the computer was turned on.
So I replaced the graphics card for both reasons to a ATI Radeon 5870 PCIe with a GB rather than the 256 that came with the machine.
The problem was solved. I got a new monitor, one that is like the latest ones and all has been working great for a few years.
Then recently the monitor started going dark while the computer was on. (no screen saver or anything like that, I can be in the middle of work on a photo or video).
    Trouble shooting I have tried.
A forum said drag the mouse to the hot corner for a while and then back. Well, I tried, assuming I was dragging the mouse to the corner. Didn't work.
I tried using the keyboard commands to shut down the computer. It didn't work.
I tried plugging the keyboard into other USB ports and tried to shut down the computer. No luck.
The only thing that works is shutting down the computer with the power button.
on start up the monitor is back on.
Sometimes it works for days like this, other times the monitor stays on only minutes.
The monitor is fine. Tested my old monitor on the computer to make sure it wasn't my new monitor.
    So the questions are:
    Can it be over heating?
is it worn out, toast, done and or dead and dieing?
Should I buy a replacement graphics card VS finally upgrading and getting a new computer (lots of $$$$ but then I do work in HD Video so....)
    any help is appreciated
    thanks
    john

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

  • I have a Mac Pro tower with two internal Hard Discs, each one 2TB. I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But it does not allow me to back up because it says there is not enough back up space available. Between the two HDs there are 3.3TBs. Can I daisy chain TC?

I have a Mac Pro tower (OSX version 10.6.3) with two internal Hard Drives, each one 2TB.
I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But cannot back up because it tells me there is not enough space.
I have more than 3Tbs to store to the new TC.
Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?

Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
No, you cannot link to produce a single large partition.
But you can have two separate backup jobs.. and use each partition. That is hard on TM but you can easily get a different backup software for it.
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
In TM you do a different setup and exclude the other drive.
But it is better to use an alternative software IMHO.
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
You would need to use a network drive of more than 4TB .. it would also take forever. This is just wrong way to do it. Although you can buy a NAS that will work with Time Machine and load it with disks 16TB is possible.. if you can get a second mortgage.. the fragile nature of TM on 3rd party devices.. would leave me in cold sweat if anything went wrong.
TM is excellent at keeping incremental backups of files that keep changing.. as such you should use TM to backup your OS disk and main user directory.. exclude all files and directories that never change. Back them up separately.
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?
Yes, that is a much better idea. You want to store photos safely and you want to store them in multiple places. If you have multiple TB of photos, dedicate a couple of disks to the backup. ie have at least two copies.. not in backup format.. in straight copy format if possible.. so you can keep one of the disks offsite.
I would be using your MacPro internal disk access, to place the disk onto sata bus and do the copy disk to disk direct. Or even buy esata card.. or sata to esata converter cable so you can use esata box. That will beat any other transfer speed except thunderbolt for which you would need third mortgage. (The MORT in mortgage is significant).
The great jurist Sir Edward Coke, who lived from 1552 to 1634, has explained why the term mortgage comes from the Old French words mort, "dead," and gage, "pledge." It seemed to him that it had to do with the doubtfulness of whether or not the mortgagor will pay the debt.

  • Logic 9 "disc too slow"  2 TB drive for recording audio on Mac pro tower, lots of system HD space 6 gigs ram?????

I purchased a Mac pro tower in 2008 it has a 320 GB system drive with lots of room left I have 2 500 GB drives and just purchased a new 2 TB 7200 RPM drive just to record from Logic onto it. I have 6 GB of Ram. I have been having this problem for years and I'm getting quite sick of it!.. I just set up a new 24 track project and I'm recording into logic via firewire with my Presonus firestudio and 2 digimax FS units at 44.1k and cant even record a few songs without it stopping in the middle of recording. This is sooo frustrating. Imagine when the band comes up with something cool and asks me to play it back and walk up to my $4,000 mac with my $500 worth of Logic to see it say Disc too slow!. I have seen this problem on many forums. Mac needs to fix this!. It makes me want to make a youtube vid of me burning my Mac with lighter fluid in the yard!. I purchased the "best of the best" at the time and Logic wont even work on a brand new Mac pro properly!?.. Cmon Apple help me out here???

Now that I've had time to stew over your comments. I do appreciate what you are saying however there should be another way to remedy this problem without having to purchase anything (ie in the software or an update, new version from apple). I ran a recording studio for Several years. I also did put a lot of thought and research into purchasing my Setup and had many compliments on the sound quality. What I'm saying is that Logic 9 should have no problem functioning on my computer. I think mac has made a poor product. I bet if I purchased the Pro Tools equivalent to Logic 9 that i could record 24 channels till the cows come home and get no errors. What I need to know is if there is something that I havent tried in my settings or software that can fix this. I think 6 gigs of Ram should be more than enough to work with. Here is what Apple has to say:
    Minimum System Requirements
    2GB of RAM (4GB recommended).
Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher.
    OS X v10.6.8 or later.
Minimum 3.4GB of disk space. (19GB of optional content available via in-app download).
So why should I have to purchase any Ram when it's supposed to work on only 3.4 gigs?... That's why your answer frustrated me. I meant no personal insult. I just think there has to be a better answer out there. I do appreciate your input though .

  • I have a brand new Mac Pro Tower that continually kicks me off the internet and sometimes starts up not connecting to the internet?

My brand new Mac Pro Tower that I spent a small fortune on sometimes boots up and does not connect to the internet when every other computer in my office does and other times it just kicks me straight off. My question is, is there a problem with the wi fi on these machines?

Brand new nMP Mac Pro 6,1 Late 2013.... and it is defective - the older silver tower might be easier to find parts but at least it is not 65 lbs and is something that can be taken in - which I think you really need to do.
When you run etrecheck from www.etresoft.com it can show what is installed, drivers and might help point to something on software side.
Grant is the go-to person here I think among others for networking issues.
Airport Express and signal strength, channel it is trying to use, whether the Network control panel settings are "correct" or need to be changed (even the order, what it is trying to look for and use).
If you move it to another spot or put another computer over in that general vicinity...? behaves the same.
I recall reading where the MacBook Pro model in 2012? and switched to a new chipset and some very long (huge) threads in their forum - which means also there was no real solution given.
No, should not be. And other than network tests would be booting into Apple DiagnosticsTest mode - pulls down from Apple servers.

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • How do I overcome error 150:30 with a replacement system hard drive on a Mac Pro?

I have replaced my system hard disk drive on a Mac Pro and used Mac 'Restore' to restore the complete system from a Time Machine backup. Everything else works correctly, except my current Adobe products (InDesign CS4 and Photoshop CS4) both give a licensing error code 150:30 and each suggest contacting Adobe technical support.
    Can you help?

Thanks for your reply. Is it necessary to uninstal the existing CS4

  • Using Mac Pro tower as a Time Machine backup drive

Has anyone here ever done this? My roommate and I both just got new MBPs, and rather than buying the Time Capsule, I thought I might be able to use my Mac Pro tower as the destination drive for our backups wirelessly, but I can't find any information on the topic anywhere online. If anyone has some light they can shed on this, I'd be very much appreciative.
Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Start File Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences and specify it from the Time Machine pane of System Preferences on the other computer.

  • Using an external microphone with a Mac Pro Tower

I have a Mac Pro tower with OS 10.4.11 and I have a question regarding recording sound through an external microphone.
I own a microphone with a 1/4" jack and when I plug it into the designated input on the back of my tower, I'm not getting any sound. I've troubleshooted with a couple different microphones and none seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some sort of configuration that I have to do when using a mic?
    Please help!

I'm sorry, but that's not really my area of expertise. If you are planning to use this for simple voice-recording you could try the Griffin iMic device which helps provide both pre-amplification and impedance matching between a mini-plug mic and a USB port for sound input. I've used it recording music from a boom-box to a MacBook.
The tech specs state that the audio line-level in port is:
Input impedance greater than 20,000 ohms
Input level: Max 2 V rms (+8.2 dbµ)
I would look for a mic that meets those specifications. MacSpeech.com has several microphone/headset recommendations for use with their Dictate and iListen voice recognition software. I would think that their suggestions would be useful.
