Conforming 720x480 for HD timeline

Hi,
I want to use 720x480 footage in a 1920x1080 hd timeline.
My original 480 footage was shot on a Sony TRV900, 720x480, interlaced,29.97, DV/DVC-Pro, non-square pixels, etc.
The timeline I want to edit into will be 1920x10880, progresive, 23.98, Apple ProRes 422, square pixels, etc.
Now I need my sd footage to be fully windowboxed and keep the 4:3 aspect ratio. But, I need it to be bigger than 720x480. But, not all the way up to 1440x1080, which would give me pillarboxes.
So, should I use Compressor to convert all the footage to 1440x1080 and then just scale it down in FCP with the motion tab to a size I like, or should I choose the size I want (say 1280x960, which I know is some weird frame size) and convert to that in Compressor?
Thanks,
Bleakley

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Why would I want to go all the way to 1920x1080? When I've done this process before and wanted to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio I'd go to 1440x1080. This time I know that will be too big of a frame size for me since I want the image to be windowboxes with black on all sides. So would scaling down in FCP (I know scaling up is always crap) be ok in this instance or should I pick the exact frame size I want (likely near 1280x960) and just use compressor to convert all the footage to that size?

  • Why is the preview window for my timeline so pixilated?

why is the image in my preview window for my timeline so pixilated? im using a mac pro 16gb ram/ 6 core / firepro d300

thanks for your feedback!  This is my first week with premiere and its been a lot of fun, but im still learning my way around and the terminology, so i appreciate all feedback and correction.
What I'm seeing in the program monitor is a sharp image when it's paused and a pixilated image when it's playing.  I'm not sure how, or where i would make the adjustments.  Also,  I have been using lots of educational videos on youtube to learn my way around, but is there like a book or something that will teach me the basics?  I don't want to be asking basic stuff on here.  Thanks again

  • How do you change the view for the timeline in a movie

not sure in new version how to do it

Not sure what you mean by the "view" for the timeline.
You can choose View>Wrapping Timeline to wrap the timeline.
Double cliccking a clip in the timeline will open the Clip Trimmer for precise work.

  • IBooks Author v. Keynote for digital timeline--URGENT

I have been working on a digital timeline project that will be viewed on an ipad in a museum that a visitor can scroll through and also see on a large screen above the kiosk. I have gone back and forth on the best application to use for this project and had decided on Keynote. However, there are some limitations that I'm concerned about and am now wondering if iBooks Author would be the better choice.
    General design elements of timeline:
background image on each page (created in PS)
text boxes for each event, some with images
The basic requirements for this timeline:
being able to scroll forward and backward through five historical periods (used the "push" animation in Keynote)
a navigation bar at the bottom of each page where a viewer can jump to any of the five periods
being able to select an event for a "pop-up" screen with a larger version of the image and extended text description
I have been able to accomplish most of this with Keynote. However, here are the problems I've encountered:
Using animation effects for the "pop-up" screen won't allow a viewer to skip this option since as you click through, it triggers the action
My work-around solution (going to a new slide to "fake a pop-up window") yields a pretty obvious powerpoint--looking transition
When you scroll backwards, the slide "push" transition doesn't work. The basic way you scroll through pages in ibooks is actually preferable to slide transitions
I really have to resolve this as soon as possible so that I can complete the entire timeline. So far, I have worked on one section to figure out a method. Any advice about which software to use would be very very appreciated. At the moment, I am leaning toward switching to iBooks Author but I want to make sure it can do what I need it to do.
    Thanks so much

    Hi,
i have produced something similar in the past.
whilst my answer is not to use either application you have mentioned, i must urge you to look at "Easy Timeline 3D"
this really does give an awesome professional looking product that is simple to create.  search the app store or look at their website for more info:
    http://www.beedocs.com
i do not work for them in anyway, but was really impressed with thier product ( it was this product, and its non availability on anything other than MAC that pushed me to ditch teh PC...!)
    hope this  helps

  • MOST OPTIMUM RT SETTINGS for sequence/timeline when cutting HD

i cutting 720/24p HD on a MBP and am wondering what are the optimum settings?
here's what i'm using as of now:
    http://f.imagehost.org/0132/FCPtimelinesettings.png
i'm getting random dropped frames, have to render clips often, etc etc...
just want to see what people are setting for their timeline.
    thanks!!

720p24...wha? HDV? DVCPRO HD? ProRes? Optimal settings are those that match your codec. Look in the Easy Setups and choose the one that matches the codec you shot, then make a new sequence and use that sequence.
#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

  • Choosing subtitle for all timelines

I am using Adobe Encore DVD 2.0
I've managed to get subtitles on the timelines I want now, after a lot of workarounds. Reading through the help file, though, I can only find the option to make a subtitle button that links to a specific timeline and chapter, with the desired subtitle track.
What I want to have is a button that says "Hear ye, hear ye! All timelines shalt now use the specified subtitle track until further notice!", like they have on pretty much all DVD's made since forever.
Please tell me this is possible in this program, and please tell me how. Thanks!

Thanks for your replies, Jeff. Yes, I will definately post results there when I found out if it works or not =)
What you're describing seemed to work at first. The subtitle stayed the same for that timeline when accessing it from the main menu "play" button, after having once chosen to start it from "play timeline with subtitle" button first.
For whatever reason though, when tried playing another timeline, the other subtitle track was chosen and played English subtitles were there should be Swedish (and yepper, you bet I've made sure to use the same ST track for the same language in all timelines).
I hope I'm making myself clear enough =P
What I would really really want is just the subtitle button to make all timelines play a certain ST track. Why do Encore feel the need to make such a different type of subtitle choosing? Or am I just missing something.

After effects warning: Audio conforming failed for thefollowing file:___________.cfa. Perhaps due to disk space.
I am working on a project for an internship and I am editing a video I had the video files working and then I started doing some editing and animations for the video  and now for some reason when I open the file into AE I get this message so I tried starting over same message when I import the video files.

I had this problem after converting some MPG's to avi's... the resulting filenames were 'foo.MPG.avi' ... the error message only seemed to indicate it was foo.MPG, so AE thought it was a MPG container type by parsing wrong, when it wasnt. i renamed all my files to just the avi, like 'foo.avi' and then imported into AE and it worked, no errors.

  • Looking for simple timeline/calendar screenlet/widget.

    Good day gentlemen,
I'm looking for a simple screenlet or widget for linux that is a calendar, but designed to be more of a timeline of past events than a reminder of future events. For my specific purpose in this case I'm trying to lose weight. So I'm seeking an application to record my previous weight and other notes about what i ate, and how much and what kind of nutrients i had that day. I would like to keep it in a calendar or timeline like format. Something easy to the point where if my buddy asked me how much i weighed last week or what i did last week, i can simply click on the date and all my notes appear about my weight, and what i ate, etc. Also simple to input data like clicking on the date and entering a note about that day. Something easy to use and sort of integrated into the desktop such as a screenlet or widget, so I don't have to open up a separate window to view these records. I did a little research and was able to find a few things, Rainlendar being one of them. But I feel most of what i found are way more complicated for my purpose. Would any of you happen to have any suggestions on what application would most suit my purpose in its most simplistic form? thanks in advance for your kind and prompt response
    Sincerely,
    Sicariuxs

There are, apparently, quite a variety of tools just for this purpose.  here's one.  That was just the first one up from a search, I don't actually know anything about it.  But overall, I'd suggest you actually narrow your search as there are tools targetted specifically for such goals.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 for Mac timeline encoder application options

What options (Procoder-like) do I have for Mac Premiere Pro CS3 timeline encoding? Appreciate any application suggestions.

I understand that you get more options on the Win Platform. If your
looking for a specific option that you intend to use alot, then you will
certainly want to factor that in when you make your OS choice.
But just having lots of options in itself is not, in itself, a good
reason to base your choice on. The Mac platforms tend to be more
quicktime based, but your encoding options are varied allowing you to
create delivery formats for a range of end users, from tiny Ipod size
video to lossless formats that most any other platform will handle with
no difficulty. Of course you have the standard DVD export routines, and
you also have flash video export routines.
For import concerns, I have found a program called Visual Hub to be
quite useful in conversions. I've found it to be able to quickly convert
most everything I throw it at, specifically those xvid and divx file
that tend to be problematic for NLE's on both platforms.

  • An on | off subtitles button for several timelines

    hello.
let me apologize in advance for my english... it is not that good.
    I work with encore cs4.
now... I would like to know how to create a subtitles on | off button in the main menu that will affect
all of the features in my dvd. I ot the idea from a dvd of the "doctor who" series that i bought and thought how to mix it with my project.
i need a button in the main menu that if i click on, the subtitles will be automaticly applied to
all of the timelines in my project and another button wich will disable all of the subtitles.
NOTIFICATION : I have only one track of subtitles for each video.
how can I create that kind of a bottun?
    thanks

These images are CS6, but I think all this is the same in CS4.
You can make a new menu, or use one you have and add the two buttons.
Add two buttons; one labeled "Subtitles ON" and the other "Subtitles OFF."
Select the "On" button and use "specify link." Select the menu you are in, and set the subtitle to "1" (your subtitle track will be #1, since you only have 1, right?
For "off," do the same thing.
For the target for the "on" button, just make it to the "play" button on that same menu, or the "play" button on your other menu.
    So...
Make an on and off button:
Select the "on" button and go to set its link and select "specify link."
For its target, use a menu button, not your timeline. And for the "on" button you will pick subtitle track 1; for the "off" button  you will pick "off."
    Just that easy!

  • Lock sync for whole timeline?

I'm working in a large timeline with 14 tracks of audio (has to be done that way because we're far along on the movie). I'm having a problem of losing sync when I make changes. Only problem is, I can't tell if I'm losing sync because the audio clips aren't linked to the video clips. I know how to link them, but I can't be linking 14 tracks to one little clip.
Is there a way to lock sync in the timeline while still allowing movement of the audio tracks?
And I know the technique of applying the ripple tool to multiple tracks. That's not going to help me hear, because sometimes maybe tracks 5+6 won't have audio until much later, and I don't want to go searching for the heads of them and apple+click them to add them to the rest of the clips I'm editing.

There is no one keystoke method. You can't lock the position on the timeline.
You can lock the audio keyframes/fade handles. Make a new audio role that is specific named for locking. change the clip's role that you want locked to the new "locked role". Go to the roles window in the timeline index and select minimize on the locked roles. This will minimize any clip that has the spacific role assignment. and you will not be able to access the keyframing/fade handles but you will also lose the graphical representaion of audio waveforms for the locked roles.

  • Conforming 720x480 offline media to 2k online media... possible?

I have ProRes LT footage at 720x480, Client just gave me ProRes 4444 media at 2k (2048x1080). Is there any way to conform the edit made in FCPX to the new media in or out of FCPX. (I mean, of course, without and exhaustive, and manual workaround).

    No, there isn't.
