"Conforming HDV" instead of "Writing Video" while rendering anything

I am having a serious issue with FCP. I am getting the "Conforming HDV" dialog instead of "Writing Video" while rendering anything
Short Project shot @ 720p 30 with a JVC GY-HD100U
1) This gradually started happening more and more.
2) Whenever I try to render anything, even a small crossfade, FCP shows the "Conforming HDV" dialog and proceeds to trash my video. Pieces of the video are repeated or frames are dropped and shots become jerky.
Undo fixes the issue. Replacing the video with the original fixes the issue. But I connot RENDER ANYTHING!
What would you all suggest?

Welcome to HDV. I've never had much better luck than this. The way the GOP structure of the mpeg-2 HDV stream works, the I-frames in your media almost never match up with the default GOP structure of the sequence, and you must wait for it to conform everytime you even think about touching it. Changing the render settings might help. If you are still runnning FCP 4.5, you will be plagued with scrambled render files - even if you can get it to show the correct rendered material in the timeline, if you export or encode or output to tape, you'll wind up with different (wrong) renders in the resulting files.
You might consider batch exporting all your media to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC), an all I-frame codec that helps to get around some of the GOP structure issues that make HDV so impossible to work with. Also, more RAM, or a better video card will take some of the load off of the processor as it tries valiantly to decode the HDV stream. Upgrading FCP to the latest version will also help with some of the render-scrambling etc.
Hope this helps -

  • "Conforming HDV footage"

I have a 90 min HDV video documentary that i am finalizing.
I'm a bit concerned about putputting it as i have little experience outputting HDV. The one time i did do it, it was more involved than putputting DV.
The entire video is treatd with effects and is currently rendered (mostly).
i remember that when I outputted my first HDV project, although it was fully rendered, there was a step (another render?) called "conforming HDV" which took quite a while. With a 90 minute project I figured it could take a week.
The premiere is in a month, and I'm still working on the credits -- so it's not done.
FINALLY THE QUESTION: is there anything i can be doing now that can make the outputting phase faster?
Is there anything else i should know abotu outputting HDV??
    thanks so much

  • Writing video vs conforming to mpeg 2 when rendering?

Just when it seems I understand what the heck I am doing, another issue crops up. I have been happily editing along for the last few weeks in the XDCAM HD timeline and rendering when needed ( a lot ) but the renders seem somewhat fast so things are good. All of a sudden when I render, it is conforming and not writing to video. Which takes much longer. Checked all my settings and they are the same as the last few weeks. Where have I gone wrong?
    Best,
    Tom

It sounds like the GOP structure is needing to be rebuilt...(that's what "conforming" is) just like HDV has GOP, so does every format from Sony contain this structure... except HDCAM, DVCAM, and DV. Only fix is not to edit with GOP structured MPEG based media. You can transcode it to ProRes (an all i frame format) and get around this... It's what I do when receiving HDV source material.
Might try rendering to ProRes to speed this up... That setting is found in the sequence's render setting's tab when you select that sequence and type cmd+zero.

  • *** Turning off "conforming HDV video" when renderring?

Based on a previous post, and in the interest of speeding up my print to video time, in the sequence menu in the nav bar in FCP I changed "something" that means that whenever I render my HDV video now, it says "conforming HDV video". This is now slowing down my editing time because I don't want to conform the video every time I render a clip. Any idea how to turn this "off" for the time being? Is this even possible?

When you select Sequence > Render All, that will Conform everything that gets rendered. If, instead, you first click to highlight the clips in the Timeline you want to render, and then select Sequence > Render Selection, FCP will only render, and will not conform.
However, this will mean that when you Print to Video, Final Cut will have to conform the entire sequence, which will take a very long time.
It's like the old Fram commercials - "you can pay me now, or you can pay me later." At some point, Final Cut will have to conform.

  • Hi, I can't figure out why I can't render on my timeline. I highlight the segment hit "Apple-R" and it gives me a weird message about "conforming HDV video...." and the bar goes as far as 60-66% and holds there forever. It never renders even partially.

Yes, I know. I have been working with HDV for some time. I am wondering why it doesn't render when it needs to.. the red and bright-green lines are above, and I've set the render settings such that ANYTHING I highlight and hit apple-R will render. But its not rendering at all.

  • Conforming HDV Video

    Hi All,
I have composed around 3 dvds from Final Cut pro over the last couple of months. I am having problem with rendering. Before it was not taking long, I must have changed something in the settings as now when rendering it is coming up with conforming hdv video... can anyone help how I can get back to rendering quicker?? thanks

    100% wrong.
What you changed is the following:
Sequence>Render All> Full. Uncheck it and when you render, you'll no longer get that Conforming HDV Video message.
While DUCKY64 might have turned that setting on accidently, you do understand that this kind of guidance is of limited value for those who output to DVD, right?
As mentioned in the Final Cut Pro 6: Working With High Definition and Broadcast Formats manual, an HDV timeline must be conformed prior to output. That includes export to QT Movie, the most common way folks get HDV media to Compressor (or any other encoder) in order to create .m2v files.
Beside that, for all types of codecs, not just HDV, the (Dark Green) Full RT media must be rendered in order to be exported via the QT movie route. If you don't render it prior to export, of course, FCP performs the render during export. So, not a whole lot to be gained for folks making DVDs.
It wasn't fair to say that Andy was 100% wrong. And resurrecting what is, considering the traffic on this forum, essentially a dead thread to make that statement wasn't cool.

  • *** Turning the "conforming HDV video" render OFF

I had to print some HDV projects back to tape, so on the advice of another person here, changed some settings so that the "conforming HDV video" stage was done before deciding to print the sequence to tape.
I'm finished printing my projects to tape now, and when I'm not editing a new HDV project, each time I press option-R to render, it says "conforming HDV video". How do I turn this "off" so that it will just render out like it normally did in the past?
    Thanks in advance..........

Hi, can you tell me how you got the printing to video to work. I´ve tried now for few days to output HD material from my project back to my tape. I have a Sony HVR Z1U Camcorder. The sequence plays well on my computer and my camcorder even starts to record but there is no picture transmitted to the tape.
    Where is the problem?
    Thanks in advance

  • "Writing Video" though Sequence already rendered

Hello. This happens occassionally though not sure why... I'm editing to tape, an assemble edit to a digi...something that we've done many times...the sequence is fully rendered..but when I edit to tape, FCP starts "writing video" which currently is taking over an hour...the other downside is that EVERY time I edit to tape when this happens, I have to go through the "writing video" process...why is this happening and how do I get it to stop? Usually if the sequence is rendered, I don't have to write video, or it's very quick so I don't mind, but I can never tell when or why this happens. THanks!
    R

Sorry, I was thinking "writing audio" when you were saying "writing video"
I've had this happen occasionally as well and not sure why, but, a way around it is to export your sequence to a self contained QT movie using current settings and reimport that file for PTT.
Takes some drive space, but I find it's also a more stable method for getting to tape than running a complex timeline using PPT. And it also serves as file copy of my final sequence.

  • Writing Video when laying back to tape, despite timeline been rendered...

    Hi
    I have a 97 minute timeline fully rendered @ Uncompressed 10bit 24sf video.
I'm trying to play out to a HDCAM SR deck via SDI output on a KONA 3 card through edit to tape. The timeline is fully rendered and plays back real time when I hit space bar and if I just want to crash record to the deck. However when I use edit to tape and try to do an assemble edit a message bar pops up saying writing video and gives me a write time of 7 hours. Does anyone know why this might be...?
My sequence settings match all my set up and deck control settings. I've double and triple checked the video format the KONA is outputting using the AJA utility... any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Check the settings playback settings in the Timeline window to make sure they are all set to be high quality... sounds like the playback/render quality doesn't match the recording quality so when you ask to edit to tape, it is attempting a total re render.

  • Conforming HDV video takes ages!

i shot some footage in hd 50i on my sony Z1 captured it all seems great - did the editing all fine (its a 3 min sequence), but now when i render it within the FCP timeline it seems to taking ages to "conforming HDV video" is this normal?
I use a macpro 2x3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with graphics card

I hadn't seen that Michael so I appreciate the heads up.
This HD-Connect MP2 unit looks to be a far more cost effective solution than the previous contender... up to now, for bi-directional conversion, I think the Canopus ADVCHDM1 has been pretty much our only option, though I had conveniently overlooked that when making my last post !
consider my stance amended ... you only "have" to accept the conform if you don't have access to third party convertors ( and the necessary IO gear for your FCP workstation )

  • Conforming HDV message

I am completing a project originated in HDV, shot at 23.98. Sequence setting is 1080p24. Did a Command-R and rendered the sequence to view with the client. Then I did an Option-R and the dialog box came up with Conforming HDV Video. I searched here in the forum and in the users manual and did not see this anywhere. Can someone tell me what FCP is doing when it Conforms HDV Video?
    Many thanks!
    Van

Native hdv is a long gop structure. Whenever you make an edit in hdv you are destroying the gop structure of that clip and every other clip in the timeline that follows it. On a fast machine, this is corrected enough for playback, but sooner or later the sequence has got to be conformed back to long gop structure from front to back. This can take a while.
This is why it is much preferable to convert hdv to one of the prores codecs. That way you have actual instead of virtual frames in your media. Everything works better with real frames.

  • Conforming HDV --twice?

    I have an 80min HDV (720) project.
I thought it was all conformed -- I've been "rendering all" in pieces for the last two weeks.
When I hit "Print to video" It said "conforming" again. -- it took about an hour (not bad for 80min as it was already rendered) After an hour it took about 5 mins to render the audio.
After that was done, instead of going to the "Print" window - it's "conforming HDV video" again.
Looks like another hour. Why is this happening again??

In no way is this an "I told you so". It's just never as simple as it should be, which is why I recommended printing ASAP. I'm not sure about the second conformation, is there a preference or setup option (there may not be) that automatically conforms the video prior to printing? If so, disable it.
edit... I just saw your opening line which says your project is 720p. I believe Sony's HDV is only 1080i. With which camera did you shoot? Are you printing to a camera or a deck?

  • New Mac Pro (late 2013) crashes / freezes while rendering or editing in Premiere Pro CC

We recently purchased a new Mac Pro desktop (Late 2013, 16GB memory, D700 Graphic Card, 2.7 GHz -12 Core, OSX 10.9.3) and we are running Adobe CC on it. When using Premiere Pro CC (7.2.2) I am having major issues while rendering and editing. About 50% of the time when I try to render it starts off real fast then just freezes. This happens in Premiere and Media Encoder. Sometimes I can just Force Quit Premiere or Media Encoder and other times I have to do a hard restart on the entire computer because the entire computer freezes. The computer will also occasionally freeze whenever doing simple editing or stacking layers. The  computer will also just decide to suddenly stop and restart when editing or doing simple tasks like browsing the web. Additionally there has been several times if the render does finish, the final video will have digital glitches throughout the video. I have to redo the render once or twice and it will finally be fine. This all is happening several times a day. This never happened on our previous Mac Pro, but we were not running Mavericks. I used Migration Assistant to transfer from old computer to new computer. So I don't know if this is an a problem with the actual Mac Pro, Mavericks, graphic card or Adobe? But right now I am very frustrated as you can imaging spending all this money for a computer that has been giving us more issues than our previous computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • FinalCut Studio crashing while rendering

On 2 different machines, a 2007 MacPro (6gb ram) and a 2008 Macbookpro (2gb ram) I am converting Go2meeting wmv files into h264 files for posting to brightcove.
While rendering the movies, at completely random intervals, I'll get an error message as below:
"Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
This will happen while it is in the middle of rendering one of the WMV files. (no cmyk files in the wmv file)
On the Macpro desktop, I'll be able to save before Fincalcut completely crashes, on the Macbook Pro, the program will crash as soon as I hit the 'ok' button.
It takes a huge amount of time to render these sequences, and is irritating when I lose an entire night to one of these crashes. Any idea what may be causing them?
Addition info: running 10.6.4 on the desktop, 10.5.8 on the laptop, Flip4Mac, perian on both.

.. I spoke with the IT guy, and he thought that is was just a simple thing of not having the video in NTSC H.246 and instead having it in PAL in DV.
you get a specific error-message, naming perian as source of error? never heard of that!
what do you try to accomplish, I assume Exporting with QT-conversion.. what settings?
perian adds a few codecs to the QT-engine, which are 'Mac-exotic', mostly divx ..
when you install other, addiional divx-plugins, e.g. for Flip-camcorders or the 'free' XviD, you get a conflict => errors.
your 'ITguy' should quit his job ... - in video editing, you don't switch standards & codecs 'like the wind'.
example: a 30fps/h264 is by many factors smaller than a 25fps/dv .. aside, you have (dramatic) losses of pic quality, by scaling the framerate ..
tell your 'ITguy', in which standard you're working, and for sure you want to export with corresponding settings.. it is HIS job, to make things done flawless .. he should 'clean' the QT-plugins to the few needed ones, not all he could get from the internet.
... The usual Admin-from-****-behavior to tell the user, s/he should change settings, not him..
your Mac/FCE DOES export in many standards.. just to mention that..
what are your sequence' settings, by the way... ?
