Confused about Bandwidth Profiler - what's it telling me?

Hi All,
I'm confused about the bandwidth profiler. I have two
different SWF
files, both are profiled for 56K modem. One file is 253K, 150
x 260 px,
599 frames @ 10fr/sec showing a preload of 96 frames (9.6 s),
frame 1 is
45K. The other is 197K, 800 x 150 px, 1009 frames @ 12fr/sec
showing a
preload of 484 frames (40.3 s), frame 1 is 189K. Why does the
preload
for the smaller file take 40.3 sec. while the larger file is
only 9.6
sec.? And what does preload mean? It appears to indicate how
long it
will take to download frame 1, is that correct? Why is the
Frame 1 size
so different between the two? And why does the smaller file
size have a
much larger frame 1 size. I just don't see why a smaller file
should
take longer to load than a larger file.
Any help would be appreciated.

preloaders preload all frames - usually a percentage -
unfortunately most developers make you wait
until 100% of the movie (all frames/content) is loaded when,
if built correctly, only a much smaller
percentage needs to be loaded before playing. Sounds like one
of your movies has embedded fonts or
objects set for export on frame 1 (like components) and they
all have to loaded first (before frame
1 actually) because flash doesn't know where in your movie
they are located.

  • Confused about color profile support in PNG

    NOTE -- you have to hover over the image to see the real images.  The images embedded in the webpage have their profiles stripped -- just like photoshop does!  Interesting.
    I ask a similar question on this before, but couldn't give a satisfactory demonstration of how photoshop doesn't support color profiles in png's.
    But now I have a great one.
    Picture A: this is with the correct color profile and displays correctly in firefox and probably other browsers -- also displays correctly on windows desktop and in large-icon view.
    Ok, anyone who doesn't believe me, grab that image and try to read it into photoshop...
    I do, and get no warning on profile mismatch like I do on jpg's or tiff's:
    photoshop strips the existing profile and adds sRGB which isn't the correct profile.
    This is how photoshop transforms good colors into bad:
    Completly screwed up.
    I have had multiple people notice how my png saved images from photoshop had "off" or bad colors -- usually washed out in comparison w/my monitor profile.
    I can get 'ok' results if I flatten the image and *convert* my existing profile to sRGB -- and I usually get
    something that looks 'acceptable'...though the jpg's render in accurate color.
    Basically, photoshop can't read or write png web images. and maintain color fidelity unless they have no profile.  Even if they have an sRGB profile, I usually get washed out looking pics if I don't strip it but let adobe convert it.
    In googling for my own problem, I found references to this problem in Adobe Photoshop going back to 2002.
    Why does adobe refuse to fix this?  It's horrible.
    They could fix it with a file plugin for existing CS5-6 users, but it really needs to get fixed and Adobe needs to stop ignoring this problem.
    :-(  I find this extra depressing because I prefer to distribute my pictures losslessly in png,  but with photoshop, I'm left with lossy jpegs to get accurate color reproduction.

    How did the SFW thing even come up??  When I embed profiles in jpg and tiff, I do it as part of the File Save or File Save As dialog.  I can choose what profile to save it with -- and I usually save it with my currently calibrated monitor profile -- as that color profile is what was used to create the picture.  Why would I want to convert them to some other profile??  Only thing I have needed to convert have been PNG's because it doesn't embed my monitor profile in the PNG the same way jpg and tiff do.
    If it did, png's would look the same as jpgs and tiffs... but the jpgs and tiffs have the full depth of color and look the same as they do in PS.  png's look washed out because -- it's been my belief that PS is not storing my profile in the png, but setting a bit in the file to use the sRGB profile.
    AFAIK, PNG provided for a sRGB profile-compat bit -- so images that were compat w/that profile could just set a bit rather than including a profile.  I see no evidence that PS is saving my monitor profile with the PNG.
    My 'settings' for RGB are to convert to working RGB profile which is my monitor profile.
    I do have it set to ask me abou profile mismatches on opening or pasting.
    Since I don't get a 'this document has a different color profile than the working space'
    message when I edit most png's, I assume it has none.  Thus from my settings
    it should autoconvert it to my monitor profile and save that on save -- which seems to be what happens when I save as jpg or tiff (or I can check off the box to save profile...but I usually don't).

  • HT4858 Confused about uploads vs. what gets saved in Photo Stream

    According to this article, you can upload 10,000 photos/day to Photo Stream, but apparently (not mentioned in this article) you can only keep 1,000 photos in your photo stream? Is that right? Then what is the point of being able to upload 10,000 per day, if only 1,000 of those will get saved? I'm confused.

    You're welcome.  Since photo stream is completely free, and doesn't use your iCloud storage plan, Apple has to put some limits on it.  It's really desiged to sync photos across your devices temporarily (30 days), giving you time to save the photos you want to keep.  If you have a Mac, you can also set iPhoto to automatically save photo stream photos to your iPhoto library for permanent archieval; don't know if there is a similare option on the Windows side.
    If you're on vacation, you might want to use an alternative cloud storage option like Dropbox.  You could use then use the Dropbox app to upload all the photos you want, provided you purchase sufficient storage, and they would be kept permanently until removed.

    Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro.  If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook.  Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad.  Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

    A profile is used on iOS device to add specific settings and similar things to an iOS device.  Tryically, they are added when the iOS devices is controlled by a company or school.
    However, some apps install a profile. If your iPod is not controlled by a company or school then it seems an app added the profile. You can good the title if the profile and see if that gives any info.

  • I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please!

    I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please! Also, I still don't understand exactly what the benefits are. At the moment it seems a lot of hassle to change a system that's been working perfectly well and that I'm very happy with. I'm not at all sure whether the mac mini (1.66 GHz INtel Core Duo) can be brought up to the relevant spec to run ICloud.  Any thoughts?

    There are two aspects to iCloud.  One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud.  The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
    First to get an iCloud account:
    If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration).  If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
    Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
    To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7).  Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
    The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html  You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
    So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address.  You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
    If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account.

  • About extra "Profile" info...

    ...continued from the discussion in the "Spam" thread after John C added the "URL", "Bio" and "Products/SysInfo" fields, here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1930765#1930765
    "Edit Profile should now show places for a URL, a brief (1 line or so) bio, and a list of products you use."
    I know what follows is merely an academic observation, but it's still kind of indicative of the attention to detail paid by the Jive programmers. Thi post is meant to act as a heads-up for users editing their profiles, and as something that should be passed along to our good pals on the Jive team.
    I was concerned about the "...brief (1 line or so)..." limit for the "Bio" field. I wanted to test the character limit. I entered the following string, but WITHOUT the spaces (for a total of 521 characters):
    a123456789 b1234567890 c123456789 d123456789 e123456789 f123456789 g123456789 h123456789 i123456789 j123456789 k123456789 l123456789 m123456789 n123456789 o123456789 p123456789 q123456789 r123456789 s123456789 t123456789 u123456789 v123456789 w123456789 x123456789 y123456789 z123456789 A123456789 B123456789 C123456789 D123456789 E123456789 F123456789 G123456789 H123456789 I123456789 J123456789 K123456789 L123456789 M123456789 N123456789 O123456789 P123456789 Q123456789 R123456789 S123456789 T123456789 U123456789 V123456789 W123456789 X123456789 Y123456789 Z123456789
    This is what appeared when after I saved my profiles prefs. All characters were present, but they extended far beyond the area meant to contain the Bio:
    Then, I replaced the non-breaking string with the set of characters pasted in bold, above. This is a total of 572 characters. This is how it appears after saving my Profile preferences:
    It's good to know that Bio information doesn't need to be limited to "...1 line or so...". I haven't tested to see what the upper-character limit is for the "Bio" field (I'm sure there is one), but it seems to me that 572+ should suffice, at least for most people.

    Of course! And it's stuff like this that keeps leaving my to scratch my head in confusion and disbelief.
    What I can't figure (this time around) is this:
    In what world of UI design does it make sense to provide a text-input field only 1 line high (and, what, maybe 30 characters wide?) when...(a) The info displayed will possibly cover more than 1 line height's worth of text, and ...(b) There's plenty of room in the Profile Prefs editing area to make that text-input field larger?
    I don't know who is responsible for it, so I won't (and don't want to...) point any fingers and make fun of poor design decisions (for the 20th time).And I kind of hope whoever IS responsible won't embarrass themselves by claiming responsibility.
    But, COME ON! WTF ARE YOU THINKING!?!?

  • Artist asks about bandwidth constraints and blogging options

    I converted to Mac two months ago and am loving what I can do. I am creating two websites using iWeb '09 (not published yet). It occurred to me that knowing a few things about bandwidth and blogs would help me create better web sites.
    I am a professional artist working in a variety of media. For the last three years I have had a professionally created web site that is "hosted" by the web designer. I would like to replace that website with one that I am creating in iWeb. I am considering getting a hosting package with 1 & 1 (although from the answers I am reading on the forum, that may not be necessary). I purchased my domain name through 1 & 1 years ago and will continue to use it. (I have been reading how to do that in the forum).
    My artist website will have many pages and many images. When I add the second website, I plan to have an active blog where I encourage people to include pictures in their comments. This would mean even more traffic, downloads, and uploads of images per month. Obviously I am looking in increase traffic to both sites. I am concerned about potentially exceeding the bandwidth permitted.
    The Mobile Me package I purchased when I bought the computer has 20 GB of iDisk storage and 200 GB data transfer per month. (I understand that that is expandable to up to 60 GB/600GB. *Do you recommend I increase my package when I publish or can I purchase the additional bandwidth as I get close to capacity?)*
    *By the way, if my site were hosted by 1 & 1, for instance, do I still need to stay in the Mobile Me permitted monthly data transfer bandwidth in the package?.*
    Because I will now have the ability to update the content of my artist website as of often as needed, I will no longer need the Blogger hosted blog I am currently using (which is under a domain name I purchased through 1 & 1) . I am considering converting that Blogger account (or creating another) to the blog host for my second website (through an external link to my second web site). *However, it is my understanding that if I did that I would not be able to receive comments. Is that correct?*
    I like the idea of linking to the Blogger account because of it's bandwidth. I could of course decide not create a second website and just use a Blogger account for the blog I want to create. However Blogger's layout does not allow as much room or flexibility of layout for telling the story of the project effectively.
    Alternately I could dump the Blogger blog altogether and use my blog pages within my second Mobile Me website. But again it is the bandwidth issue because I want to encourage uploads of images from people commenting.
    Alternately I have looked into creating a whole new Blog using Wordpress and have it completely freestanding and not related to my Mobile me account. However, if possible I would prefer to use a less complicated solution. I still have so much I am having fun learning about the things I can do with my iMac.
    Any suggestions?

    By the way, if my site were hosted by 1 & 1, for instance, do I still need to stay in the Mobile Me permitted monthly data transfer bandwidth in the package?.
    The bandwidth you use, ie the amount of data transferred by you and your vistors, is calculated where you host your pages.
    If you have no pages/images hosted at MobileMe than nothing is counted. If you host your pages/images at 1and1, then they do the counting.
    And before you buy more space, first check what you actually use. At MobileMe : your user account.
    20GB is 20.000.000.000 bytes. (to keep it simple)
    Use a calculator to do the math.
    I want to encourage uploads of images from people commenting.
    The blog at MobileMe allows comments with attachments. That means that any visitor can upload anything. Also garbage.

  • Confused about color vs. b/w photos for printing...and more

    I reading confusing things about exporting a PDF for printing with both color and black and white images used in the same document.
    If I export to PDF and do a soft-proof and it looks okay, is that sufficient? If so, what's confusing about that, since this is my first print project, which Simulation Profile do I use? Is there a chart somewhere that compares U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 to let's say 80 lb Gloss book with Aqueous coating (C2S)?
    I don't know what any of this means. So, is there a good article on this site, elsewhere, or an online printer who can help a rookie like me ensure I end up with a decent product?
    UPrinting.com advertises a "Free Project Review" that includes the following:
    Our team will run your file through a 30-point inspection, covering technical issues including:
    Artwork dimensions
    Bleed setup
    Low resolution images
    Elements that are not within the safe zone
    Image clipping
    Font sizes
    Un-embedded fonts
    Folding setup
    Page scaling
    Line weights
    Proper text spacing (compressed/expanded)
    Narrow borders that are at risk of being cut
    Compliance with USPS Mailing Guidelines
    Bindery setup for multi-page artwork
    What should I do? Is this trustworthy as long as I get a contract proof? Is there a "Go To" online printer that everyone loves (not sure you can recommend that here) or should I seek out a local printer?
    I'm using CS4 and have a file that's (maybe) ready to go but am looking at a learning curve of days if not weeks if I have to figure it all out myself.
    Thanks everyone.
    Paul

    InDesign puts grayscale and B&W (bitmap mode) art on the Black plate, where it belongs, so if you soft proof using the CMYK profile for your expected output conditions your preview will be accurate for the grayscale and B&W images as they will appear in print. presuming your monitor is calibrated and profiled so that you can trust what you see.
    Aqueous coating is applied AFTER the printing to protect, and possible enhance the glossiness of, the page (but not all coatings are glossy). This is not the same thing as printing on coated paper, which has a glossy surface and high ink holdout (and improves detail reproduction and usually will geive better color). You should be using whatever profile the printer has specified.

  • Bandwidth Profiler/Simulate Download deprecated in CC ? lame

    I've been using CS6 because the Object Level Undo was deprecated in CC. Now its back in CC 2014...thanks
    I just noticed that the Bandwidth Profiler/Simulate Download/Download Settings - Options are deprecated as well.
    Really? This was necessary? These tools are quite useful and don't function the same way in Scout at all.
    I was building a timeline banner recently and noticed it was gone.
    I build all sorts of things with Flash (banners, desktop apps, iOS/Android) and when I need to do timeline animation and check my frames K size quickly, these options are awesome and handy.
    Especially the Download Settings. I use Scout for my larger more demanding applications, debugging and optimizing. Plus Scout doesn't allow you to what the bandwidth profiler settings do. Firing up Scout to check where the data peaks are for a 15 sec banner is overkill to me. Especially when the Bandwidth Profiler did its job just fine. Especially being able to go frame by frame. Its not the same at all.
    I don't know where you get your info from but removing stuff like that seems like a odd choice. These options have been in Flash as far back as I can remember. Maybe 10 years at least.
    How about allowing it to be added as an extension to Flash? Release the code in MXP/ZXP format? Then you can keep the same CC 2014 core build and let people add what they need.
    I'm sure there are lots of people that feel the same way about some of the other deprecated options.
    Is this an option?
    For now I will use Flash CS6 and Flash CC for different things.
    I love Flash but you guys really know how to annoy me.

    We all tried Scout and found it lacking the feature we want.
    What is the deal with Adobe removing useful things? I need to simulate how my file behaves under various download conditions. Why would Adobe take that away? Who treats their customers like this?

    I bourght "E O Wilson's Life on Earth" and backed it up to my iMac. Now it won't sync back to my iPad because it says I don't have permission on this computer. I don't want to download it from iTunes again because it took up a lot of bandwidth. What's the deal?
    I also made the big mistake of downloading a free book about the making of the movie "Frankenweenie." Mega-memory eater. Now it wants to download additions and started to do so---now says paused. I can't delete the bloody thing. Seems like nothing I've downloaded, including free books, can be deleted. How can I get rid of this garbage?
    Is there any way to just transfer my music from my iMac to my iPad and not affect anything else on my iPad? The whole iBooks thing is just a mess as far as I'm concerned. Is there any way to just drag and drop?

    "I have logged in to my itunes account on a different computer and none of my purchased music is showing up."
    Correct.  it does not magially appear in other places.  It will only be where you put it.
    "I also have plugged my iphone in to get updates but it says I will lose all media and apps if I don't update on the computer where  I sync everything. "
    Correct as well.  Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.
    You need to copy everything ( itunes library/contacts/pics/calendars/files/docs) from the old computer, or your backup copy of the old one, to the new one.

  • Confused about logical table source

    Hi,
    I'm confused about logical table source(LTS), there are 'General', 'Column Mapping', 'Content' tabs in
    LTS, in General tab ,there are some information,like 'Map to there tables' and 'joins',
    just here, we have created relationships in physical layer and BMM layer, so I would like to ask what's the use of the 'joins' here?

    Hi Alpha,
    Valid query, when you establish a complex join it is always between a logical fact and dimension table.Consider a scenario,
    Example:w_person_dx is an extension table not directly joined to a fact but joins to a dimension w_person_d.
    When you model the person_d tables in BMM, you ll have a single logical table with w_person_d as source.If you have to pull columns from both w_person_d and w_person_dx tables in a report, you add dx table as inner join to persond table in the general tab.Now when you check your physical query, you can see the inner join fired between the two dimensions.

  • Confused about extending the Sprite class

    Howdy --
    I'm learning object oriented programming with ActionScript and am confused about the Sprite class and OO in general.
    My understanding is that the Sprite class allows you to group a set of objects together so that you can manipulate all of the objects simultaneously.
    I've been exploring the Open Flash Chart code and notice that the main class extends the Sprite class:
    public class Base extends Sprite {
    What does this enable you to do?
    Also, on a related note, how do I draw, say, a line once I've extended it?
    Without extending Sprite I could write:
    var graphContainer:Sprite = new Sprite();
    var newLine:Graphics = graphContainer.graphics;
    And it would work fine. Once I extend the Sprite class, I'm lost. How do I modify that code so that it still draws a line? I tried:
    var newLine:Graphics = this.graphics;
    My understanding is that since I'm extending the Sprite class, I should still be able to call its graphics method (or property? I have no idea). But, it yells at me, saying "1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Graphics.

    Thanks -- that helped get rid of the error, I really appreciate it.
    Alas, I am still confused about the extended Sprite class.
    Here's my code so far. I want to draw an x-axis:
    package charts {
        import flash.display.Sprite;
        import flash.display.Graphics;
        public class Chart extends Sprite {
            // Attributes
            public var chartName:String;
            // Constructor
            public function Chart(width:Number, height:Number) {
                this.width = width;
                this.height = height;
            // Methods
            public function render() {
                drawAxis();
            public function drawAxis() {
                var newLine:Graphics = this.graphics;
                newLine.lineStyle(1, 0x000000);
                newLine.moveTo(0, 100);
                newLine.lineTo(100, 100);
    I instantiate Chart by saying var myChart:Chart = new Chart(); then I say myChart.render(); hoping that it will draw the axis, but nothing happens.
    I know I need the addChild method somewhere in here but I can't figure out where or what the parameter is, which goes back to my confusion regarding the extended Sprite class.
    I'll get this eventually =)

    Hi all,
