Confused about DVD+RW on Mountain Lion

I have never messed with DVDs, but am finally to the point where I want to try and transfer my old VHS tapes (family stuff & church sermons - not commercial) to DVD. I have access to borrow someone's DVD recorder and was going to try and record these with DVD+RW just so I could get these into a digital format on my computer hard drive to save. But I am confused as I see the computer came with iDVD but the application doesn't launch as it says its no longer supported for Power PCs, then the next time I tried to launch it to type the message here it says I can't use this version (iDVD 6.0.4) with this version of the OS (why did it come with the computer? LOL)
I still have my older iMac running Snow Leopard which I think can run DVDs on it (it could when it ran Tiger I have never tried it with the upgrade.) I'm assuming if all else fails I can use this older computer.
I am confused though as Mac are usually known for people being able to do extensive film editing etc on them with their videos etc. How is this possible if you have no software? Or can I do this with iMovie?
As you can see I'm clueless about this...

iDVD is not longer offered by Apple. However, it's still the best video DVD authoring application for the Mac there is. If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Did Apple Break HD-DVD Playback with Mountain Lion using Apple DVD Player?

First of all, kindly spare me the commentary about Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD. Agreed and not the question. I have perfectly good reasons for using HD-DVD and it works very well for my purposes.
I authored an HD-DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2. as I have done many times before on Snow Leopard, but this time on Mountain Lion. When I try to play the HD-DVD, either from the physical disk from a disk image, the menu appears, but when the play button is pressed, the menu stays on screen, but the player shows the timecode of the movie playing, but with no sound or picture.
Thinking that perhaps the menu got corrupted, I put the same HD-DVD into a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and it played perfectly! Conclusion: Not a DVD Studio Pro problem.
Thinking that it might be DVD Player, I copied DVD Player 5.4 from the Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (which was running DVD Player 5.6), and the HD-DVD still had the same issue on the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, under either of the DVD Player versions. Conclusion: Not a DVD Player issue.
The HD-DVD does mount and initialize, so it's not a hardware issue with the optical drive.
Conclusion: It would appear to me that it's an OS issue with Mountain Lion breaking (either intentionally or unintentionally), HD-DVD playback. Anyone know anything more about this issue? Anyone else saddened to see Apple turn into Microsoft circa 2005, and the MacOS turn into Vista? I haven't seen much of anything about it in the forums, which is why I'm posting it here.

I just spent the better part of 3 days transcoding and authoring this HD-DVD, only to have you screw it up for me 2 days before my film festival (the perfectly good reason for using HD-DVD). Kindly spare me the, "Why don't you encode a ProRes blah blah blah quicktime movie." Heard it all before.
I knew I would regret upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I do more and more each and every day as I continually find more things that it broke. Yet another reason to add to my list for downgrading to Snow Leopard. I'm up to about 30 of them. Or to abandon Final Cut for Adobe products.

Update: The Apple Store in Nashua, New Hampshire replicated the issue on their own hardware, so yes, Apple did break HD-DVD playback with Mountain Lion (it does still work in Lion, they discovered). The Apple Store reported the issue to engineering, but the more people that report the issue, the more likely Apple will do something about it. Thanks Apple.

There is no purchase link on the OSX page. Only an update link. I want to purchase a retail install DVD and start from a fresh formatted drive.

Apple has taken Mac OS X out of the on-line store with the release of Mountain Lion. Prior to the release you could find/buy the DVD copy of Snow Leopard for $30...now you have to call the Apple telephone order number to buy SL.
The versions of Lion have always only been available through the Mac App Store, whether the download or the flash drive form. Mountain Lion is currently only available in download format, no flash drive format has been released and nothing has been said about doing so.
As Niel pointed out, if you call Customer Service, see http://www.apple.com/contact for the number, with the serial number of your computer Apple will send you the original machine-specific installer disk...there is a fee that I think is around $16 or so for the disk.

About hardware test on Mountain Lion

I tried to hardware test few different way, as using (Hoding d, option+d and also same thing with usb).
But nothing work.
Anyone know about how to try hardware test on Mac Pro with Mountain Lion?

try using Application Isntall DVD disc which came with your Mac Pro.
(as usual, to use AHT, hold down the D key when you start up your Mac Pro.)

I understand you're looking to print CD/DVD labels to your Officejet 6500 Wireless, from your Mac.
There are normally third party software programs you can download to print out whichever brand of labels you are trying to print on. If you wish to let me know which type of labels you are using, I will see if I can find their support forums for you.

DVD backup on Mountain Lion?

Previously used Handbrake to back up my DVDs... my kids scratch them up like crazy, so backups are a must! Handbrake no longer seems to work with Mountain Lion... unexpectedly quits. Any suggestions?

If they're homemade movies, please post back with a little more info (format of video, etc).
If not, it is most likely because there would be copyright/DRM issues involved if these are commercial DVDs. The law currently states that you are not allowed to copy commercial content even though you paid for the DVD; consequently, we are not allowed to discuss methods to bypass such laws.

Need to know about charges if reinstalling Mountain Lion.

Hi! I bought a secondhand Macbook and it has mountain lion installed, I erased the hard drive and reinstalled ML twice. Will I be charged even if I already have a mountain lion installed on an iMac? I'm just worried that my credit card will be charged.

If you purchased ML from the App Store, you are allowed to install ML on any computer you own or control without paying anything extra.

No. You misunderstood. Upgrading to Mountain Lion is not connected to upgrading your other software nor your iDevices. If you need to upgrade third-party software you need to do that in addition to upgrading OS X. Mountain Lion has nothing to do with upgrading your iDevices. You upgrade their firmware with iTunes.

External DVD Drive Problems - Mountain Lion

I am having problems using external DVD Drives on my 2012 Mac Mini.
I have tried using 2 plug and play devices that are stared to work with Macs.
The drive powers up but it does not appear anywhere on the mac. essentially it wont mount.
the lasest drive I have tried is the Samsung SE - 208
Please Help!!!

Connect the drives, launch Disk Utility, and see if they show up. If so, pop in a disc and see if that solves your issue. AFAIK, they won't mount unless there/s a disc inside. If still no go,Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

Using DVD-RAM in Mountain Lion

I was lucky enough to pick up some DVD-RAM discs at a bargain price, brand-new in wrappers and box. Frankly, though, I haven't got the slightest idea how to make the best use of them. I have a suitable DVD drive, that's not the issue. My primary use for these will be offline storage of important documents and files.
The first thing that's caught my attention is that I have to format them for use. Some reading around suggests UDF would be the best format to use, but this isn't available in Disk Utility. All I have are various versions of HFS, ExFAT and FAT. I own Toast Titanium 9, and I'm comfortable with the Terminal, which may open up my options. So:
1) Which format should I use to get the best speed and longevity out of these discs? How would I apply it?
2) Could I use an encrypted filesystem (eg. HFS Encryption) at all, and if so, without reducing the lifespan, or severely crippling the speed?
After that, I'm assuming I just write to the discs as though they were hard drives - adding, deleting, renaming, moving etc. at will - though mindful of the fact that the discs have limited re-writes available (these are 2-3x discs, though, which Wikipedia describes as having 100,000 re-writes in them, which is ample).
3) Have I got that right?

Reinstalling Mountain Lion on brand new MPB Retina??

I bought my first MBP retina literally 2 days ago. Anyways, last night I saw that I had an update in the iTunes store. The update was for iOS7. Without much thought, I downloaded the update. When it was finished downloading, I clicked "restart now". A few minutes went by and nothing happned. The cursor was gone and everything seemed frozen. So I manually restart the computer.
When the computer rebooted I kept getting some kind of kernel panic on the boot screen. Nothing would happen. So I rebooted and held command + r. I then proceeded to reinstall a new copy of mountain lion because that was the only thing I could think to do.
Everything appears to be fine now but I have a few questions.
1) I didn't run disk utility and erase the disk before reinstalling a new copy of mountain lion. Is that a problem? Do I have two versions of the OS saved on my hard drive or did the new download just overwrite the previous version?
2) Why was an update for iOS7 showing up in my itunes store?
3) Should I worry about having to reinstall mountain lion after literally using the macbook for only a few hours.

No it is not a problem and the new installation simply overwrote the previous one
The iOS 7 upgrade is ONLY for iPhones and iPads and should have had no effect on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I am not sure what you actually did because the normal process for installing iOS 7, or any iOS update or upgrade including iPhone and iPad apps downloads to a folder in the iTunes folder. In fact the iTunes store is the only place to get new or updated software for the iPhone and iPad. Do not confuse the iTunes Store with App Store which is a separate application for downloading and installing Mac OS X updates and software. There is an update to iTunes 11.1 that must be downloaded before attempting to download and install iOS 7. I suspect that is what you actually installed, but I have no idea why it could or would mess up Mountain Lion. For the last couple of days the Apple download servers have been completely swamped by all the iOS 7 downloads and reports of the downloads taking two and three hours are common. The problem may have been related to that, but that is purely a guess.
No you should not be concerned about the reinstallation. As I said I do not know what happened, but you should not have been able to install anything to do with iOS 7 on your new Mac.

Safari Bookmarks were automatically restored after Disk Reformat and OS X Mountain Lion re-installation

I was just wondering how my Safari Bookmarks were auto restored after I performed a Disk Erase/Reformat, and re-installed from scratch my OS X Mountain Lion. After my login into the new reformatted OS X Mountain Lion Disk, I noticed my old Bookmarks were there as before on the Safari Bookmarks Bar.
I know this is not a priority support question But I was just wondering how this was done, so I may continue to learn about Mac OS X Mountain Lion and its features like Safari, iCloud, and so forth
